A control-theoretic study of complex systems such as closed-loop neural prostheses exhibits several challenges, from the design of an optimal feedback control problem to its solution. In this paper we study one such system, a closed-loop voluntary movement of a prosthetic finger using electrophysio-logical activities of a single cortical motor neuron. We develop an optimal feedback control problem in the nonlinear receding horizon based terminal set constraint framework. We analyze the feasibility and stability of the control problem. Further, we solve the control problem numerically by implementing a local optimum based nonconvex nonlinear programming algorithm. Finally, we study effects of visual and proprioceptive feedback pathways on the closed-loop system. Our results elucidate the importance of multiple feedback paths in designing a closed-loop neural prosthetic system.

We propose to use the Izhikevich single neuron model to represent a motor cortex neuron for studying a control-theoretic perspective of a neuroprosthetic system. The problem of estimating model parameters is addressed when the only available data from intracortical recordings of a neuron are the Inter-Spike Intervals (ISIs). Non-linear constrained and unconstrained optimization problems are formulated to estimate model parameters as well as synaptic inputs using ISIs data. The primal-dual interior-point method is implemented to solve the constrained optimization problem. Reasonable model parameters are estimated by solving these optimization problems which may serve as a template for studying and developing a model of ensemble cortical neurons for neuroprosthesis applications.

In continuous annealing processes, strip tension is an important factor which indicates whether the annealing line works steadily. The strip tension detection in the continuous annealing process, therefore, is essential for the reliable and stable operation of the units, and will help to improve the quality of strip products. However, in real annealing processes, only a limited number of strip tensions can be measured. Since installing tension sensors everywhere will be unrealistic and expensive, in this paper a cascade reduced-order observer method with principal component analysis (PCA) and neural networks (NN) compensation is proposed to estimate the unknown tensions between each two neighboring rolls so as to monitor the tension profile for the whole line. When the main observer model is established, the influences of strip inertia and roll eccentricity on tensions are taken into account for better estimation. Moreover, when the error compensation is designed, PCA scores are used as the inputs to the NN. The application results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, with the estimated tensions used for the analysis of the strip-breaks fault.

Transgenic plant investigations focus on fine-regulation of the recombinant protein expression and purification strategies. In this article, preliminary experiments were done at analytical-scale to decide the best plantibody HB-01 purification strategy. Once it was assumed, the purification efficiency was assessed at different scales (10-600 kg of biomass). The plantibody purity measured by SDS-PAGE and LC-GF was over 90%, yielding 9.9 +/- A 6.2-18.6 +/- A 0.9 mg plantibody kg(-1) of biomass and 39.9 +/- A 7.9-48.7 +/- A 2.1% of recovery. Significant differences were not observed among these parameters at these scales. Plant DNA contents were < 3.3 ng mg(-1) of plantibody, which is considered very low for the plantibody HB-01 application in the hepatitis B vaccine production.

The objective of this paper is to propose a universal methodology for performance assessment of run-to-run control in semiconductor manufacturing. The slope of the linear semiconductor process model is assumed to be known or subjected to mild plant/model mismatch. Based on an internal model control framework, analytical expressions of minimum variance performance (MVP) and best achievable performance (BAP) for a series of run-to-run control schemes are derived. In the methodology, closed-loop identification is utilised as the first step to estimate the noise dynamics via routine operating data, and numerical optimisation is employed as a second step to calculate the best achievable performance bounds of the run-to-run control loops. The validity of the methodology is justified by examples of performance assessment for EWMA control, double EWMA control and RLS-LT control, even under circumstances where the processes encounter model mismatch, metrology delay and more sophisticated noises. Several essential characteristics of run-to-run control are discovered by performance assessment, and valuable advice is offered to process engineers for improving the run-to-run control performance. Furthermore, a useful application example for online performance monitoring and optimal tuning of run-to-run controller demonstrates the advantage of the methodology.
