In this study, a reactive distillation column in which chemical reaction and separation occur simultaneously is applied for the synthesis of tert-amyl ethyl ether (TAEE) from ethanol (EtOH) and tert-amyl alcohol (TAA). Pervaporation, an efficient membrane separation technique, is integrated with the reactive distillation for enhancing the efficiency of TAEE production. A user-defined Fortran subroutine of a pervaporation unit is developed, allowing the design and simulation of the hybrid process of reactive distillation and pervaporation in Aspen Plus simulator. The performance of such a hybrid process is analyzed and the results indicate that the integration of the reactive distillation with the pervaporation increases the conversion of TAA and the purity of TAEE product, compared with the conventional reactive distillation.

This paper explores the possibilities of using the combination of the state of the art nonlinear programming problem solver IPOPT and the initial value problem solver CVODES (incorporated in SUNDIALS) for the solution of dynamic optimization problems, also regarded as open loop optimal control problems (OCP). Recent works confirm the potential of IPOPT in solving large scale optimization problems and particularly in solving optimal control problems in the framework of the complete parameterization approach [12]. Here the OCP problems are solved using the control vector parameterization scheme and the advantages and disadvantages of the combination CVP + IPOPT + CVODES are evaluated through several examples.

Advances made in the research of IPMC (ionic polymer metal composite) actuators have shown that this technology is highly suitable for both minituarization, and use in environments that may prohibit the use of conventional actuation devices, such as submerged in a fluid. These characteristics indicate the compositepsilas suitability for implementation by small-scale aquatic vessels, such as those that operate within blood-streams to record and transmit biological data or interact with the blood to treat a medical condition. In order to develop such a robot, a suitable control system must be developed that allows for optimization of the IPMC motion to maximise thrust, given constantly changing conditions of the surrounding environment and parameters of the robot itself. This paper seeks to develop such a control system, first by developing a propulsion model for the robot, and then uses Extremum-seeking feedback control to optimise the swimming mode, with the results verified experimentally.
