An adaptive data-driven soft sensor is derived based on systematic dynamic key variables selection of a process system. The key variables are captured using statistical approaches. The on-line plant measurements can be directly selected as key features to estimate the tardily-detected quality variables. The statistical method adopted is the standard stepwise linear regression. The linear model is adapted as the on-line/off-line quality data becomes available. The adaptation of the model is implemented by standard Kalman filtering theory. The key variables are re-selected in case of new scenarios arrive and are detected by the soft senor. The real time data from an industrial O-xylene purification column is implemented to demonstrate the validity of the approach. Many different scenarios are simulated through an industrial standard dynamic simulator. The simulation results also showed the approach is adequate for the industrial applications.

Batch tests were performed to investigate the nitrite effect on the P-uptake of biomass grown in pilot-scale SBR and MBR systems. The results showed that the nitrite has an inhibitory effect on the aerobic P-uptake of the SBR and the MBR biomasses. The degree of inhibition was observed to be 65 % and 37 % at 10 mg NO2-N/l for the SBR and the MBR respectively. Both biomasses were found capable of using nitrite as electron acceptor as effectively as nitrate. Moreover, for the SBR biomass the anoxic P-uptake rate using nitrite was found even higher (60%) than the P-uptake rate with nitrate. From a modelling point of view, the current models require appropriate extensions to describe these various effects of nitrite. Hence, an extension of the ASM2d model has been provided. Prevention of nitrite build-up in full-scale EBPRs will eliminate the nitrite inhibition problem. Alternatively one can adopt a proactive approach in which the aerobic P-uptake phase is replaced with an anoxic P-uptake phase using only nitrite as electron acceptor. Such an approach offers considerable cost savings and enhanced nitrogen and phosphorus removal. This, however, requires further research for experimental validation and testing.

Bucky gel actuator is a novel electro-active polymer (EAP), which is a low-voltage driven dry soft actuator. In addition, the bucky gel device generates electromotive force when bending, and then it also can be used as a sensor. Its device has a bimorph structure with polymer-supported bucky gel electrodes and a polymer-supported ionic gel electrolyte. It can be fabricated by layer-by-layer casting, to form any shape easily. In this paper, we demonstrate an automatic fabrication method of the bucky gel devices based on a printing method. By using a dispensing machine, we construct the printing system, and manual forming process is replaced with automatic printing. We investigate the printing of complicated shapes and 3D electrode pattern through experiments.

Parameter selection for the criterion weighting matrix is concerned based on the information of both modifying the past estimation residuals and renewing the present estimation residual error. After minimizing the system estimation error, an optimal recursive algorithm is given. In this method the system data record can be used efficiently. The consistency of the new recursive algorithm is analyzed. Finally, some simulation examples are included to demonstrate the new method's reliability.

Cyclic processes can be characterized by two time variables, viz, the time within a cycle and the cycle index, each carrying a distinct connotation of time. Conventional optimal control theory does not explicitly account for these two dimensions (2D) of time that characterize cyclic systems. In this paper, we study the control of cyclic process using Model Predictive control (MPC). The proposed approach uses a 2D Lyapunov function and the stability requirements are established along each time dimension of the system. The resulting controller synthesis problem is expressed in convex form using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). The approach allows incorporation of input/output constraints in the proposed 2D MPC framework. An example of a cyclic process is presented to establish the applicability of the proposed approach.

Globalization is making both developed and developing countries think about effective and efficient strategies that will advance their economies and social development. Throughout the history of civilization, engineering has played a critical role in economic development. Engineers are key not only in solving local problems but also in knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. Thus, it is imperative that technical know-how be supplemented with professional skills to develop an 'adaptive leader' who is capable of addressing the multiple challenges of an ever changing world. The key-question posed by the 21st century global economy to engineering educators and stake-holders is this: "How can education in science and technology help to reduce poverty, boost socio-economic development, and take the right decisions for sustainable and environmental compatible development?" To answer these questions, a global approach is needed: and this can only be accomplished by a "team" which has its roots in all regions of the world, i.e. which is enabled to think globally and then act locally. There's a need to establish effective engineering education processes of high quality around the world to assure a global supply of well-prepared engineering graduates. This paper describes the reasons for the creation in October 2006 of IFEES - the International Federation of engineering Education Societies. It will describe the vision, mission, and key strategies of IFEES. It will also describe some of the initiatives currently underway and how the various engineering education stakeholders can leverage and benefit from engaging with IFEES, thus strengthening the organizational capacity of engineering education societies throughout the world. The paper will share plans to help members learn from each other's best practices and even failures and how those organizations that have been in existence for quite some time (ASEE was founded in the late 19th century) can contribute to the institutio

This paper proposes a recursive method of constructing weak-control-Lyapunov functions for nonlinear systems. Lyapunov function is one of effective tools to study stability and stabilization in nonlinear system control design. However, a general way of finding Lyapunov functions has not been known yet. Our method is introduced by an explicit topological-geometric assumption for a state space manifold, called a Morse-Smale. The assumption indicates that there exists a sequence of inclusions of the manifold and its singular structures, called a weak-Lyapunov filtration. From this structure, we can construct a finite number of iterations to define weak-control-Lyapunov functions. As a result, the existence of the weak-control-Lyapunov functions can be specified by the investigation of property of manifolds.

This paper shows that one of soft actuators, Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) can be modeled in terms of distributed port-Hamiltonian systems with multi-scale. The physical structure of IPMC consists of three parts. The first part is an electric double layer at the interface between the polymer and the metal electrodes. The frequency response of the polymer-metal interface shows a fractal degree of gain slope. Then we adopt a black-box circuit model to this part and give considerations for distributed impedance parameters. The second part is an electrostress diffusion coupling model with bending and relaxation dynamics. This part is represented by an electro-osmosis, which is a water transport by an electric field, and a streaming potential, which is an electric field created by a water transport. We discuss the relationship of stress and bending moment induced by swelling. The third part is a mechanical system modeled as a flexible beam with large deformations. The representation has the capability extracting the control structure based on passivity from distributed parameter systems possessing a complex behavior.

We study the problem of multivariable anti-windup controller synthesis that incorporates trade-offs between unconstrained linear performance and constrained anti- windup performance. In our previous work [13], we presented a framework for simultaneous design of a linear output feedback controller and a static anti-windup compensator using Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs). This framework deviated from the conventional two step paradigm of anti-windup by proposing a one-step synthesis while still maintaining the anti-windup structure. However, the work in [13] did not provide conclusive demonstration of the efficacy of this formulation through realistic practical examples. In this paper, we further study the framework in [13] and explicitly demonstrate its capability in providing effective constrained anti-windup controller performance for two benchmark problems, viz. a vibration isolation table and a multivariable model for the longitudinal dynamics of an F8 aircraft.

A system to display velocity profiles of the flow of a slurry through a pipe online and in real-time has been developed. The system uses an electrical resistance tomography instrument developed by the University of Cape Town to generate resisitivity profiles through two cross sections of the flow which are cross correlated on a pixel wise basis to produce a velocity profile. The software developed employs a highly modular structure that allows different image reconstruction and cross correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without substantial changes to the rest of the application. Using an 2.67GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500MB RAM, the system can calculate a velocity profile in significantly less time than taken to capture the data used in the calculation, indicating the system is capable of real-time performance. By overlapping correlation windows, a velocity profile frame update rate of one frame every two seconds can be achieved. Typical velocity flow profiles generated by the system are presented based on data captured using the Flow process research center at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's pipe flow test rig. Results for a sliding bed flow regime of a 5% kaolin, 10% sand slurry are shown. © 2007, International Society for Industrial process Tomography. All rights reserved.
