Aqueous tape casting was used to produce yttria-stabilized zirconia films for electrolyte-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Tape casting slurries were prepared varying the binder content between 20 and 25 wt%. A commercial acrylic emulsion served as binder. Rheological measurements of the two slurries were performed. Both slurries showed a shear-thinning behavior. Tapes with 25 wt% binder exhibited adequate flexibility and a smooth and homogeneous surface, free of cracks and other defects. Suitable conditions of lamination were found and a theoretical density of 54% in the laminates was achieved. Laminated tapes showed higher tensile strength compared to single sheets. Tape orientation has a significant influence on the mechanical properties. Tensile strength, elongation to strain, and Young’s modulus measured in samples produced in the direction of casting showed higher property values.

Phase equilibrium of the Mg-Zn-Sm ternary system at the Mg-rich region at 400°C was investigated. One ternary phase Z was confirmed, with a composition formula of Mg3Zn10Sm and crystal structure of P63/mmc. Zn was found to have large solubility in both Mg 3Sm (∼35.6 wt.%) and Mg41Sm5 (∼4 wt.%) phases. An isothermal section of 400°C in the Mg-rich corner was constructed, which provides important understanding of phase relationships in the Mg-Zn-Sm system.

self-oscillating polymer gel has become a distinguished class of smart soft materials. Here we fabricated and demonstrated a self-oscillating structural gel network with the incorporation of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. The structural polymer gel oscillates at a macroscopic level with remarkably faster kinetics compared to a normal gel of similar chemical compositions. The structural polymer gel also displays larger oscillating amplitude compared to the normal gel because of the increased diffusion of fluids surrounding the gel particles. This type of structural polymer gels can be harnessed to provide novel and feasible applications in a wide variety of fields, such as drug delivery, nanopatterning, chemical and biosensing, and photonic crystals.

The development of an earth‐abundant, first‐row water oxidation catalyst that operates at neutral pH and low overpotential remains a fundamental chemical challenge. Herein, we report the first nickel‐based robust homogeneous water oxidation catalyst, which can electrocatalyze water oxidation at neutral pH and low overpotential in phosphate buffer. The results of DFT calculations verify that the O O bond formation in catalytic water oxidation prefers a HO OH coupling mechanism from a cis ‐isomer of the catalyst.
