A series of 2,5-bis(phenylsilyl)-substituted 3,4-diphenylsiloles were synthesized by one pot reaction in moderate yields (47–66%) and characterized by NMR, Mass and elemental analysis . Their crystals were grown from THF/methanol mixtures and analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures and energy levels were calculated by B3LYP/6-31G(d) basis set. The results show that these new siloles possess a flexible conformation with novel σ–π* conjugation. The absorption and fluorescence spectra were measured in the solution and aggregate states. Whereas they are weakly fluorescent in solutions, they are induced to emit strong deep blue light in solid films and crystals, demonstrating an aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic.

In this study, novel surfactant-coated magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and evaluated for enrichment performance towards the sensitive detection of disease biomarkers. Surfactants with phosphate ester groups (RD35A and RD66) were used as a coating to reduce aggregation and to enhance the nanoparticle dispersion. Importantly, sensitive enrichment of the target proteins using the antibody-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Ab@MNP) was obtained, with a five-fold increase in recovery compared to uncoated magnetic nanoparticles. Similarly, phosphopeptide enrichment using the NTA@MNP in standard samples showed that the nanoparticles could selectively enrich phosphorylated peptides.

We combined single-molecule force spectroscopy with nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and molecular mechanics simulations to examine overstretching transitions in single-stranded nucleic acids. In single-stranded DNA and single-stranded RNA there is a low-force transition that involves unwinding of the helical structure, along with base unstacking. We determined that the high-force transition that occurs in polydeoxyadenylic acid single-stranded DNA is caused by the cooperative forced flipping of the dihedral angle formed between four atoms, O5’-C5’-C4’-C3’ (γ torsion), in the nucleic acid backbone within the canonical B-type helix. The γ torsion also flips under force in A-type helices, where the helix is shorter and wider as compared to the B-type helix, but this transition is less cooperative than in the B type and does not generate a high-force plateau in the force spectrums of A-type helices. We find that a similar high-force transition can be induced in polyadenylic acid single-stranded RNA by urea, presumably due to disrupting the intramolecular hydrogen bonding in the backbone. We hypothesize that a pronounced high-force transition observed for B-type helices of double stranded DNA also involves a cooperative flip of the γ torsion. These observations suggest new fundamental relationships between the canonical structures of single-and double-stranded DNA and the mechanism of their molecular elasticity.

We examine the general problem of light transport initiated by oblique illumination of a turbid medium with a collimated beam. This situation has direct relevance to the analysis of cloudy atmospheres, terrestrial surfaces, soft condensed matter, and biological tissues. We introduce a solution approach to the equation of radiative transfer that governs this problem, and develop a comprehensive spherical harmonics expansion method utilizing Fourier decomposition (SHEFN). The SHEFN approach enables the solution of problems lacking azimuthal symmetry and provides both the spatial and directional dependence of the radiance. We also introduce the method of sequential-order smoothing that enables the calculation of accurate solutions from the results of two sequential low-order approximations. We apply the SHEFN approach to determine the spatial and angular dependence of both internal and boundary radiances from strongly and weakly scattering turbid media. These solutions are validated using more costly Monte Carlo simulations and reveal important insights regarding the evolution of the radiant field generated by oblique collimated beams spanning ballistic and diffusely scattering regimes.
