Modern large-scale cloud platforms require live migration technique on Docker containers with stateful workload to support load balancing, host maintenance, and Quality of Service (QoS) improvement. Efficient and scalable Docker live migration is expected to guarantee the component-integrity (image, runtime, and management context) with negligible downtime. In this paper, we present a highly efficient live migration system called Sledge, which ensures the component-integrity by integrating both images and management context during runtime migration. The key insight is that the layered image can be leveraged to reduce the migration overhead, and appropriately selective migration of management context will effectively improve QoS with negligible downtime. To achieve good scalability, a lightweight container registry mechanism for end-to-end image migration is designed to avoid the redundant layers transmission. In addition, a dynamic context loading scheme is proposed to precisely load the management context into the running daemon, which can significantly reduce downtime. Experiments show that, compared with the state-of-the-art, Sledge reduces 57% of total migration time, 55% of image migration time, and 70% downtime.

Streaming Graph Pattern Mining (GPM) has been widely used in many application fields. However, the existing streaming GPM solution suffers from many unnecessary explorations and isomorphism tests, while the existing static GPM ones require many repetitive operations to compute the full graph. In this paper, we propose a pattern-aware incremental execution approach and design the first streaming GPM accelerator called PSMiner, which integrates multiple optimizations to reduce redundant computation and improve computing efficiency. We have conducted extensive experiments. The results show that compared with the state-of-the-art software and hardware solutions, PSMiner achieves the average speedups of 770.9× and 60.4×, respectively.

Automated Data Visualization from Natural Language via Large Language Models: An Exploratory Study

The Natural Language to Visualization (NL2Vis) task aims to transform natural-language descriptions into visual representations for a grounded table, enabling users to gain insights from vast amounts of data. Recently, many deep learning-based approaches have been developed for NL2Vis. Despite the considerable efforts made by these approaches, challenges persist in visualizing data sourced from unseen databases or spanning multiple tables. Taking inspiration from the remarkable generation capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs), this paper conducts an empirical study to evaluate their potential in generating visualizations, and explore the effectiveness of in-context learning prompts for enhancing this task. In particular, we first explore the ways of transforming structured tabular data into sequential text prompts, as to feed them into LLMs and analyze which table content contributes most to the NL2Vis. Our findings suggest that transforming structured tabular data into programs is effective, and it is essential to consider the table schema when formulating prompts. Furthermore, we evaluate two types of LLMs: finetuned models (e.g., T5-Small) and inference-only models (e.g., GPT-3.5), against state-of-the-art methods, using the NL2Vis benchmarks (i.e., nvBench). The experimental results reveal that LLMs outperform baselines, with inference-only models consistently exhibiting performance improvements, at times even surpassing fine-tuned models when provided with certain few-shot demonstrations through in-context learning. Finally, we analyze when the LLMs fail in NL2Vis, and propose to iteratively update the results using strategies such as chain-of-thought, role-playing, and code-interpreter. The phenomenon of unbalanced regional medical resources has led to large differences in the implementation experience of clinical pathways in hospitals with different medical levels. However, due to the fear of privacy leakage and the lack of sharing motivation, there is a lack of effective collaborative communication channels for clinical pathways among medical institutions. In response to these problems, we propose a blockchain-based sharing incentive scheme for clinical pathway experience, which uses the clinical pathway implementation effect evaluation system to evaluate the quality of clinical pathway experience data. Specifically, we designe a two-phase cross-domain shared transaction model for the transaction of clinical pathway experience data. Moreover, we introduce the shared transaction alliance committee to verify and review the transaction, and solve the problems in the transaction in the arbitration phase. Finally, the functional test results show that the system meets the experience sharing incentive requirements, and the performance test results show that the TPS of sharing clinical pathway experience read and writed can reach around 600 and 1000, and the transaction latency of each phase is within 3 s.

Medical data sharing can improve the quality of medical care and promote progress in the field of public health. However, medical data has high confidentiality and complexity. Taking the clinical diagnosis and treatment data of Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 (T2DM) in medical treatment as an example, T2DM data often has the phenomenon of "multi-disease coexistence" and is insecure and inaccurate in the process of sharing. Based on Blockchain and Attribute- Encryption (ABE), we propose a T2DM data sharing system to solve the above problems. An Attribute-Encryption algorithm T2DM-CP-ABE is proposed to solve the problem of excessive sharing granularity. T2DM-CP-ABE, combined with the medical data contribution module, takes the contribution factor as an important consideration, to stimulate the power of T2DM data sharing and promote the development of national diabetes prevention. Based on the Blockchain, a medical data attribute authorization model is proposed, which provides a credible solution for multiple hospitals to realize medical data attribute authorization, and realizes the clinical diagnosis and treatment data sharing of T2DM among doctors. Based on Blockchain and ABE technology, a data sharing system for T2DM has been implemented on the Fabric platform. The result shows that the average time for the system to complete a single sharing is less than 1 second.

Multi-tenant service-based systems (SBSs) have become a major paradigm in software engineering in the cloud environment. Instead of serving a single end-user, a multitenant SBS provides multiple tenants with similar and yet customised functionalities with potentially different quality-of service (QoS) values. Thus, existing approaches to service selection for single-tenant SBSs are no longer suitable. Furthermore, the target multi-tenancy maturity level also needs to be considered in the service selection approach for an SBS. In this paper, we propose three novel QoS-aware service selection approaches for composing multi-tenant SBSs that achieve three different multi-tenancy maturity levels. Extensive and comprehensive experiments are conducted and the experimental results show that our approaches outperform the existing approach in both effectiveness and efficiency.

To overcome the scaling and performance limitations, the Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) is utilized as the underlying storage model of blockchain systems, which enables concurrent transaction processing and confirmation. However, accompanied by high performance, DAG-based blockchains still suffer from the severe challenge of constrained storage scalability, i.e., expensive storage overhead. Based on an in-depth analysis of the data, we discover that the root cause of storage overhead stems from the considerable data redundancy in the DAG-based blockchains. In this paper, we propose GeckoDAG, a lightweight DAG-based blockchain, whose design consists of two steps. First, we abstract a storage model named Basic from the existing DAG-based blockchain systems, which offers both high performance and security. On top of Basic, we then devise GeckoDAG, which merges previous transactions into Transaction Union (TU) and reduces the data redundancy in TU, thus lowering the storage overhead. To evaluate our design, we implement a prototype of GeckoDAG and conduct various experiments on it. The experimental results demonstrate that GeckoDAG can offer storage scalability while maintaining the security and efficiency of DAG-based blockchains.

Due to the convenience and popularity of Web applications, they have become a prime target for attackers. As the main programming language for Web applications, many methods have been proposed for detecting malicious JavaScript, among which static analysis-based methods play an important role because of their high effectiveness and efficiency. However, obfuscation techniques are commonly used in JavaScript, which makes the features extracted by static analysis contain many useless and disguised features, leading to many false positives and false negatives in detection results. In this paper, we propose a novel method to find out the essential features related to the semantics of JavaScript code. Specifically, we develop JS-Revealer, a robust, effective, scalable, and interpretable detector for malicious JavaScript. To test the capabilities of JSRevealer, we conduct comparative experiments with four other state-of-the-art malicious JavaScript detection tools. The experimental results show that JSRevealer has an average F1 of 84.8% on the data obfuscated by different obfuscators, which is 21.6%, 22.3%, 18.7%, and 22.9% higher than the tools CUJO, ZOZZLE, JAST, and JSTAP, respectively. Moreover, the detection results of JSRevealer can be interpreted, which can provide meaningful insights for further security research.

The ability for cloud data centres and edge data centres to collaborate unleashes the potential of the edge-cloud system. However, its sophistication causes unexpected issues in request scheduling, such as Insufficient intelligence, complicated hierarchy and limited cooperation. Traditional resource optimization methods for the edge-cloud system struggle to accommodate such intricate situations. In this paper, inspired by the behaviors and regulations in human society, we propose a socialized learning-based scheduling approach for the edge-cloud system, namely SocialEdge. In order to adapt to time-varying requests and dynamic service prevalence, we propose a learning-based approach, multi-agent advantage actor-critic (MAA2C) and graph convolutional networks-based MAA2C for two phases, respectively, which can improve individual intelligence to achieve optimal dispatch and orchestration decisions. Then, to make use of hierarchy correlation, we develop the socialized refining inter the layers, where inference results from one layer guide the training process of the other layer so that optimization-critical knowledge can be abstracted. Besides, we apply socialized cooperation to each layer, where federated averaging with MAA2C is implemented to ensure cooperation over private data for achieving optimal global solutions. Experimental evaluations on a proof-of-concept testbed along with two real traces demonstrate that baselines have 105% more delay than SocialEdge while being 76.6% less time efficiency and 21.6% less throughput.

Log creation, maintenance, and its persist ordering are known to be performance bottlenecks for durable transactions on persistent memory. Existing hardware persistent memory transactions overlook an important opportunity for improving performance: some persistent data is algorithmically redundant such that it can be recovered from other data, removing the need for logging such data. The paper presents an ISA extension that enables selective logging for hardware persistent memory transactions for the first time. The ISA extension features two novel components: fine-grain logging and lazy persistency. Fine-grain logging allows hardware to log updates on data in the granularity of words without lengthening the critical path of data accesses. Lazy persistency allows updated data to remain in the cache after the transaction commits. Together, the new hardware persistent memory transaction outperforms the state-of-the-art hardware counterpart by 1.8× on average.
