Maximizing total fuel utilization is the key to improving the electrical efficiency of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems. The cascade system can achieve this effectively, but there are fewer studies on hydrogen-fueled cascade systems, and the determination of suitable rated power ratios needs a basis. Because of the characteristics of cascade systems, a fast model that can predict performance at low flow rates and low hydrogen partial pressures is required. Using multiple sets of experimental data, this study developed and validated an improved semi-empirical model, which accurately predicted the industrial-sized cell performance at different flow rates and hydrogen partial pressures. On this basis, the basic parallel and cascade system models were established. The effects of fuel flow rate, rated power ratio, split ratio, and constraints on the system performance were studied and analyzed, and the appropriate design and operation parameters of the cascade system were determined. The results indicated that the cascade system can significantly improve electrical efficiency compared to the parallel system by selecting suitable design parameters. In the example of a 10-kW rated power system design, the cascade system improved the electrical efficiency by over 9% at rated power compared to the parallel system. The results obtained provide valuable reference for related research and offer guidance for system design. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Physical Passivation of Deep-Level Defect states in Polymer Dielectrics for Outstanding Dielectric Properties

The limited dielectric strength of polymer dielectrics hampers their reliable use in highly integrated electrical systems and high-energy storage film capacitors. This constraint is closely associated with the presence of deep-level defect states in polymer dielectrics. Here, we present an efficient and stable approach for the physical passivation of deep-level defect states aimed at enhancing the dielectric properties of polymer dielectrics. Employing inductively coupled plasma technology with argon as the carrier gas, the polymer undergoes substantial decreased deep-level defect states, as evidenced by nano-micro-region defect measurements. Consequently, the localized charge accumulation in the treated polymer dielectric is significantly reduced, resulting in a remarkable 62% increase in flashover voltage. The breakdown strength is also enhanced, and the treated material exhibits long-term stability. Moreover, materials featuring passivated deep-level defect states can boost discharge energy density without compromising efficiency. For instance, PTFE with passivated deep-level defect states maintains a discharge energy density of 1.18 J/cm3 and a charge-discharge efficiency of 95.06% at 200 °C and 300 MV/m. By focusing on deep-level defect states passivation, we introduce a strategy for receiving polymers with exceptional performance and stability. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Along with the power fluctuation and other problems caused by large-scale grid connection of renewable energy, electrochemical energy storage has been widely concerned by researchers. Firstly, the technical characteristics and application scenarios of important electrochemical energy storage are summarized in this paper. Then the analysis focus on the evaluation indexes of the economic and social benefits of electrochemical energy storage on the generation side, grid side and user side. Finally, in order to adapt to the landing of carbon peaking and carbon neutral targets, and combined with the implementation of time-sharing tariffs, energy storage planning problems that need further in-depth research are proposed in view of the shortcomings in existing energy storage planning studies, which are of great significance for improving the adaptability of subsequent energy storage planning studies.

In recent years, with the development of smart grid technologies, wind turbines, photovoltaics and other renewable energy sources as well as demand-side loads have participated in grid dispatching, resulting in increased complexity of energy flows in the grid. Distributed energy resources (DERs) differ in many dimensions, such as technical attributes, operating modes, and business objectives, and its management authority also belongs to different entities, making it more difficult for grids to manage DERs. A management mode, virtual power plant (VPP), being enabled by information and communication technology, could effectively overcome the challenges with decentralized DERs and help realize the aggregation of DERs. In this paper, the interaction between customers and VPP is modeled, where VPP divides the owners of DERs into three categories according to the willingness and responsiveness of customers and balances budget costs and risks based on the modern portfolio theory. simulation with the CIGRE 20kV distribution network benchmark demonstrates that VPP could greatly meet the power consumption demand of multiple participants during operation. In order to improve the power output stability and frequency stability when large-scale new energy is integrated into the grid, large-scale new energy base must consider the configuration of energy storage systems with a certain capacity. Facing the demand under the background of new energy development, this paper analyzes the positive impact of energy storage to new energy base. The configuration method of energy storage capacity is proposed, and furthermore, the proposed method is used to calculate the capacity of the energy storage system required to be configured in a typical new energy base, and the power suppression and stability improvement effects brought by the energy storage are evaluated. The case analysis results show that the required energy storage capacity of a new energy base is about 10% of its total wind power and photovoltaic capacity. This configuration ratio can basically achieve the stability of the new energy output fluctuation, and at the same time provides the same frequency regulation capability with conventional generator set of equal capacity.

Improving Surface Performance of Composite Insulators by Multifunctional Nano-Coating

Insulator is an important component of outdoor insulation systems. It works in complex environments and faces a series of problems such as surface contamination, loss of hydrophobicity, accumulation of surface charges, which may eventually lead to flashover. Aiming to solve these problems in a simple and scalable method, we propose a multifunctional nano-coating based on SiO 2 /PDMS/EP. By the combination of multiscale structure and low surface energy modification, this coating shows excellent water-repellency performance, a large contact angle greater than 160° and a small rolling angle near 0° are achieved on coated silicone rubber, which enables the surface with excellent self-cleaning performance. Benefiting from the multiscale roughness, the heat transfer is inhibited by the reduced contact area, which further slows down the icing process on coated silicone rubber. The de-icing force on coated silicone rubber is also smaller than that on pristine silicone rubber. This coating also introduces many shallow traps to the surface, which is beneficial to the fast surface charge dissipation in a short time. Besides, the high water-repelling ability can promote the droplet to roll away under the action of electrical field force, which alleviates the electrical distortion caused by the droplets. As a result, the wet flashover voltage of coated silicone rubber is 60% higher than that of pristine silicone rubber. This multifunctional coating is a facile, scalable, and effective approach to improving the comprehensive surface performance of insulators. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With effective properties, a resistive-type superconducting fault current limit (R-SFCL) has become an effective device to restrain DC-side bipolar short fault currents in multilevel modular converter multiterminal DC systems (MMC-MTDCs). However, due to the resistance-energy accumulation-dependent characteristics of the R-SFCL device, the fault durations and different fault current values will produce various output resistances at each fault stage, and the related coordinated protection and control strategy needs to be adjusted accordingly. Therefore, in the first part of this paper, we analysed the DC side short circuit current mechanism and the fault current restraint characteristics of R-SFCLs. Subsequently, to verify the above analysis, the R-SFCL-based four-terminal MMC-MTDC with DC bipolar short fault modelling and simulation are presented in the next section. Finally, based on the above analysis and research, the advanced DC bipolar fault control and protection strategies of the R-SFCL-based MMC-MTDC system are discussed to promote further study of coordinated and protection control and the application of R-SFCLs in subsequent engineering applications.

As a new type of mechanical energy storage, compressed air energy storage (CAES) has attracted wide attention in recent years. This paper studies the optimal sizing problem of CAES in power distribution network (PDN). CAES plays a role in shaving the peak and filling the valley at demand side and thus reduces the operation cost of PDN to purchase electricity from the main grid. A multi-parametric linear programming (MP-LP) model is formulated where the power and energy capacities of CAES are regarded as parameters;the parameterized optimal value function (OVF) provides a graphical tool to describe the impact on operation cost of CAES configuration, which helps determine the planning strategy in a visual manner. The visualized results reveal not only the optimal solution, but also some useful information, like the sensitivity of operation cost to parameters. Case studies conducted on the IEEE 33-bus distribution system verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

With the continuous advancement of the construction of new power systems, the data information of the power system is increasing exponentially, and the spatiotemporal distribution of the use of smart terminals and electrical equipment is more scattered. Data collection and analysis of traditional power systems will be a huge challenge. In order to meet the actual needs of multi-scenario, multi-service, and changeable measurement and control objects of intelligent distribution network, this paper firstly studies the design of general terminal open architecture for distribution network multi-measurement and control scenarios, proposes a data service architecture based on open architecture, and establishes a self-description-based open architecture design. The unified information model of the Internet of Things protocol, research and development of intelligent measurement, and the controlling of universal terminals meet multiple communication methods, and realize the deployment verification of intelligent measurement.

The development of DC transmission technique is prompting the development of AC/DC hybrid grid. As a new form of the grid, AC/DC hybrid grid faces many challenges one of which is the effect of DC blocking on AC lines. This paper analyses the influence of DC blocking on AC lines. Based on the analysis, a control strategy using wide area information is proposed to avoid the severe overload of AC line after blocking a DC line. The proposed strategy increases the transmission power of normally operating DC line aiming to afford part or all of the transmission task of the blocked DC line. The test result obtained from simulation indicates that the proposed strategy can reduce the overload of AC line after blocking a DC line. © 2020 IET Conference Publications.
