This paper studies the fault current frequency spectrum characteristics of single phase ground fault in ungrounded distribution networks, and the fault location method based on it. Firstly, it analyzes the production mechanism of 2nd major frequency component, and the relationship between the 2nd major frequency component and series resonance frequency of the faulted line. Secondly, from the perspectives of lumped-parameter circuit, the relationship between 2nd major frequency component and fault location is deduced. simulation cases are used to confirm the relationship. Last, the impact of load and initial fault phase angle on the 2nd major frequency component are researched. simulation research proves the feasibility of the fault detection and location method based on frequency domain characteristics. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper analyzes the general process of power flow transferring and divides it into four parts: 1) the process of first phase selection after fault occurs;2) the process of selective action at the first time;3) the process of second phase selection and status confirmation;4) the process after status confirmation. It points out that the issue of asymmetrical flow transferring is a critical process which must be put emphasis on. Then it proposes a method to identify this process, and discuss different solution methods. © 2011 IEEE.

Fault locator for power distribution system with neutral non-effectively grounded should locate phase-to-phase fault and single-phase-to-ground fault respectively. For phase-to-phase fault, the point can be located by power-frequency impedance. However, for single-phase-to-ground fault with limited power-frequency current not more than load current, a novel fault location technology should be developed. The paper will present a practical single-phase-to-ground fault location based on fault generated traveling waves acquired from one phase current transducer and zero sequence current transducer at first. Then implementation of the novel fault locator is proposed including hardware design and software flowchart. At last field tests will be made to verify the feasibility of the fault locator. © 2011 IEEE.

Estimating low-frequency oscillation modes and the corresponding mode shapes based on ambient data from WAMS measurements has a promising prospect of application in power system analysis and control. The present approaches estimate the modes and mode shapes respectively, which greatly reduce the computational efficiency. Besides, there is no good solution for the problem of discriminating real modes from the spurious ones caused by numerical error. A method based on stochastic subspace method was proposed in this paper. By choosing the angle measurements of all buses as input signals for the method, the modes and simultaneously the corresponding mode shapes of any bus can be estimated conveniently. By introducing the idea of reference channels, the computation complexity was substantially reduced without decreasing the accuracy. Stabilization diagrams technique was introduced to discriminate the real modes from the spurious ones. The test case based on the IEEE-118 system indicated that the method proposed is satisfying in respect of both computational efficiency and accuracy of results. © 2011 IEEE.

Under the skin effect caused by the alternating electromagnetic field, the transmission line parameters changes with frequency, and different line resistivity, surge impedance, wave speed are presented in one line under the different frequency bands of signal. This phenomenon is usually called Frequency transmission characteristic, which is mainly discussed in this paper. This paper first studied the line resistivity, wave speed and surge impedance of zero-mode component and line-mode component in different frequency bands. Then, the line structure and its effection on Frequency transmission characteristic are presented. Last, the frequency transmission characteristic on a certain line fault is discussed based on a typical distribution system model. The research in this paper is meaningful for future study on the fault feeder selection and fault location technology based on traveling wave in the distribution system. © 2011 IEEE.

Traditional operation rules depend on human experience, which are relatively fixed and difficult to fulfill the new demand of the modern power grid. In order to formulate suitable and quickly refreshed operation rules, a method of linear decision tree based on support samples is proposed for rule extraction in this paper. The operation rules extracted by this method have advantages of refinement and intelligence, which helps the dispatching center meet the requirement of smart grid construction.

On the basis of analyzing the composition of losses in high-efficient high-voltage asynchronous motors, the approaches of increasing the efficiency of the motors is investigated in this paper. The approaches concern with the improvement of material, winding, fan, magnetic groove and so on. By taking the economy and efficiency into account synthetically, the design of the YKK series induction motors is carried on, and it is realized by software simulation. © 2011 IEEE.

With parallel gap, by controlling the motion path of the electric arc, effectively avoid burning and damaging the insulator during lightning strike so that the effect to reduce the accident rate of line is obvious. Because of simple structure, convenient installation and good economical efficiency, its importance in measures of lightning protection for transmitting line is continually improved. Electric field characteristics on the surface of parallel gap electrode have obvious influence on corona generation and the gap breakdown position and are the key parameters that must be considered in the design. Based on the finite element method, this paper sets up the analysis model of electric field of parallel gap including the tower, the conductor and the insulator, uses ANSOFT software for simulation, studies the surface electric field characteristics of parallel gap electrode, compares the electric field of four types of parallel gap put forward in the paper and analyzes the law of influence of parallel gap electrode parameters on the electric field characteristics. The results show that, when the short circuit distance is increased, the maximum values of electric field of ball end and snap ring body are obviously increased;the opening angle of snap ring is larger and the maximum value of electric field of ball end is higher;when the pipe diameter is increased, the maximum value of electric field of snap ring body is reduced considerably;the ball end is bigger and the maximum value of electric field of ball end is less;the ring pipe diameter is the structure parameter having the largest influence on the surface electric field;for the ball end at the end of ring electrode, the structure parameter having the largest influence on the electric field is the diameter of ball end. Reducing the distance that the ball end stands out of the ring plane can decrease the maximum value of electric field of ball end. © 2011 IEEE.

Initial discharge position is key consideration during design of parallel gap and depends on discharge characteristics of parallel gap under the action of lightning surge when the lightning strikes the tower or line. This paper gives three types of parallel gap used to protect the composite insulator, sets up the impulse discharge test and observation platform including high-speed camera, studies the impulse discharge characteristics of parallel gap and analyzes the influence of structural parameters on the discharge characteristics. This study showed that there is randomness for discharge path of parallel gap;three types of parallel gap given in this paper can achieve 100% discharge rate of parallel gap;the determinant of discharge rate in the presupposition discharge area (PDA) is the distance that the presupposition discharge area stands out of the whole electrode plane. When this distance exceeds 20mm or more, it can ensure that most of the discharge occurs in the PDA;the parallel gap can reduce the insulation distance of 4000mm insulator about 40mm, U50 about 1%, which may approximately consider that the parallel gap has no influence on the insulating property of the insulator. © 2011 IEEE.

Effects of nonlinear gradient index on radiative heat transfer in a one-dimensional medium by the DRESOR method

The DRESOR (Distribution of Ratios of Energy Scattered by the medium Or Reflected by the boundary surface) method is applied for radiative heat transfer in a one-dimensional medium with a nonlinear gradient index and gray boundary surfaces. In this proposed method, the DRESOR values calculated by the Monte Carlo method express quantitatively the impact of scattering on radiative transfer and the radiative intensity with high directional resolution of high precision can be easily obtained. With given media characteristics and boundary conditions, the temperature and radiative flux distributions inside the medium are calculated under the condition of radiative equilibrium. It is shown, in the cases studied, that the DRESOR method has a good accuracy. The temperature distributions have a node with different kinds of sine changed gradient index distributions under the same boundary emissivity. The impact of the gradient index on the radiative heat transfer is considerable, and the same as that of the ratios of its amplitude and average index. Besides, the effects of optical thickness, boundary emissivity and scattering phase function on radiative transfer also should be paid adequate attention.
