Diagnosis of unbalanced bearing fault samples based on cycle generative adversarial networks

The robust feature extraction capability of deep learning (DL) has rendered it a popular choice for fault diagnosis in various industries. However, the accuracy of fault diagnosis models is often compromised due to an imbalance between normal and faulty data during the production process. To address this issue, this study proposes an unbalanced bearing fault sample diagnostic method based on a cycle generative adversarial network, using vibration fault diagnosis of rotating machinery rolling bearings as an illustrative example for validation purposes. The method utilizes continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to convert the original vibration signal into time–frequency maps, which are then utilized as input for the cycle generative adversarial network. To address issues related to unstable training and timely convergence of the model, spectral normalization and weight decay techniques are introduced, thereby enhancing the performance of the improved cycle generative adversarial network in generating additional fault samples. Finally, the Swin Transformer model is employed for fault diagnosis and compared with other methods such as Random Forest (RF), Sparse Autoencoder (SAE), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The diagnostic experiment encompasses sample expansion, imbalanced proportion between normal and faulty samples, as well as scenarios involving limited sample sizes. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can generate higher quality synthetic samples when training data is scarce;moreover, utilizing the Swin Transformer for diagnosis yields superior accuracy compared to alternative approaches such as RF, SAE, SVM, or CNN models—thus showcasing significant potential in addressing imbalanced data within fault diagnosis. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

Instantaneous frequency (IF) serves multiple critical functions in the prognostic and health management of rotating machinery. Current IF estimation methodologies primarily concentrate on enhancing estimation accuracy at the algorithmic level. However, in practical industrial applications, the target signal component is often influenced by varying operating conditions, structural resonances, and background noise, causing it to become submerged or even disappear, ultimately resulting in the failure of conventional IF estimation techniques. To address these challenges, a novel IF estimation approach incorporating signal quality enhancement is developed. First, the complementary multi-source vibration signal is processed by the proposed segmented cepstrum lifting method to overcome the submersion of the resonant frequency band on the target component. Then, processed segmented signals are fused using coherent averaging technology to enhance the amplitude of the target component. Finally, leveraging the first-order approximation capability of the short-time fractional Fourier transform (STFrFT) for nonlinear frequency modulation modes, precise IF estimation is achieved. Verified by field data, the proposed method outperforms mainstream methods in both accuracy and applicability, highlighting its industrial application prospects. © 2025 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel hierarchical controller for connected truck platoons. To this end, the predecessor following topology is used to characterize the communication connectivity between connected trucks. Then, a longitudinal efficient controller consisting of upper-level and lower-level controllers is proposed. In particular, the upper-level controller is designed based on the kinematic model to handle the car-following interactions between connected trucks and delays in communication and input. The lower-level controller comprises a feedforward and a feedback control law. The feedforward control law converts the desired acceleration from the upper-level controller into the vehicle throttle or braking pressure using the inverse dynamic model, while the feedback control law compensates for the control error caused by unknown vehicle parameters. In addition, in the linear region, the internal stability is analyzed based on the second-order kinematic model using s-domain analysis and linearization method, respectively. Then, the string stability is proved. The influence of parameters on the stability performance is extensively discussed using the stability diagram. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed controller is verified via co-simulations in PreScan and TruckSim, in terms of acceleration, velocity, and spacing error profiles. © 2025 IEEE.

Fast trace ratio-based feature selection

The quality of features has a great impact on machine learning tasks. Feature selection obtains a high-quality feature subset from data, which has been widely studied because of high interpretability. In this paper, we propose a novel feature selection algorithm called trace Ratio-Based Feature Selection (RBFS), which first defines the distance of different classes and the same classes for a given sample and then projects these distances into the subspace. The margin is defined by the trace ratio of these two distances. The objective function is formulated by maximising the margin. To avoid a trivial solution, the orthogonal subspace and the L2, 1 norm are incorporated into the objective function. Then, theoretically, the rewritten objective function can obtain the optimal solution through alternating iterations. In addition, power iteration is introduced to reduce the computational cost. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with six other state-of-the-art ones. Copyright © 2022 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Steady-state harmonic response analysis of a stranded wire helical spring-mass system using an iterative harmonic balance method

As a cylindrical spring wound by a wire strand, the stranded wire helical spring has been widely used as key repositioning components for high-end devices. Most of these devices can be simplified as single degree-of-freedom (DOF) stranded wire helical spring-mass systems. The steady-state harmonic response analysis method is an important tool for designing a system with the nonlinear spring. The present work proposes an iterative harmonic balance method to solve for the steady-state harmonic response of the single DOF stranded wire helical spring-mass system. Taking into account the nonlinearity of the stranded wire helical spring, a nonlinear model comprising a modified Bouc-Wen equation was proposed for describing the dynamic nature of the spring-mass system. Based on the harmonic balance method and nonlinear iterative methods, the seeking for the response solution was transformed into a nonlinear optimization issue for the nonlinear spring-mass system. The present method was examined using both simulations and experiments. The results show that the proposed approach is simple yet accurate, and thus being very practical for engineering applications. © The Author(s) 2014.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Nanoparticle-Aggregated Ag–AgX(X=Cl, Br)@TiO_2 Microspheres Under Visible Light

Ag–AgX(X = Cl, Br)@TiO_2 nanoparticle-aggregated spheres with different mass ratio of R = TiO2/Ag(X) from 35:1 to 5:1 were synthesized by a facile sol–gel technique with post-photoreduction. The photocatalytic activities of both Ag–Ag Cl@TiO_2 and Ag–Ag Br@TiO_2 under visible light are effectively improved by ~3 times relative to TiO_2 NPAS under the simulated sunlight for the decomposition of methyl orange(MO). Ag–AgBr@TiO_2 showed 30% improvement and less stable in photocatalytic activity than that of AgCl@TiO_2. The role of Ag and Ag X nanoparticles on the surface of Ag–Ag X(X = Cl,Br)@TiO_2 was discussed. Ag on these samples not onlycan efficiently harvest visible light especially for Ag Cl, but also efficiently separate excited electrons and holes via the fast electron transfer from Ag X(X = Cl, Br) to metal Ag nanoparticles and then to TiO_2-aggregated spheres on the surface of heterostructure. On the basis of their efficient and stable photocatalytic activities under visible-light irradiation, these photocatalysts could be widely used for degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution.

Multi-hop Knowledge Graph Question Answering (KGQA) requires reasoning about multi-hop inference relations between topic entities and answers on the knowledge graph(KG) and returning correct answers. The difficulty of obtaining the implied inference relations in multi-hop questions described in natural language and the sparse knowledge graph bring challenges to the multi-hop KGQA. In this paper, we propose an embedded knowledge graph multi-hop Q&A model based on relational paths, which exploits the relational chains in the knowledge graph and the semantic similarity of multiple questions to improve the accuracy of multi-hop KGQA task. The comparative experiments prove that our method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art counterparts. Comprehensive ablation experiments also validate the effectiveness of our approach on multi-hop KGQA tasks. © 2022 SPIE.

Simulation about multi-frequency modulator of light impulse used in LAPS array

Two kind of frequency modulator to produce multi-frequency light impulse array and a kind of measurement system for light addressable potentiometric sensor (LAPS) array are introduced based on micro-lens and frequency modulator disk. Simulation of FFT is used to analyze the available photocurrent signals of LAPS array with MATLAB. According the simulation spectrum, the corresponding photocurrent signals of light impulse with different frequencies are able to resolve. When the duty ratio is larger than or equal to 30%,the construction of the frequency modulator can be simplified, which further prove that LAPS array with multi-frequency light impulses is provided with reliable *** of above provides enough theoretical foundation for preparation and signal processing of LAPS array device. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Multi-objective optimization of vehicle passive suspension with a two-terminal mass using Chebyshev goal programming

To improve the dynamics response of the vehicle passive suspension, a two-terminal mass is suggested to connect in parallel with the suspension strut. Three performance criteria, tire grip, ride comfort and suspension deflection, are taken into consideration to optimize the suspension parameters. However, the three criteria are conflicting and non-commensurable. For this reason, the Chebyshev goal programming method is applied to find the best tradeoff among the three objectives. A simulation case is presented to describe the multi-objective optimization procedure. For comparison, the Chebyshev method is also employed to optimize the design of a conventional passive suspension. The effectiveness of the proposed design method has been clearly demonstrated by the result. It is also shown that the suspension with a two-terminal mass in parallel has better performance in terms of the three objectives.

Palm-vein recognition has received increasing researchers’ attention in recent years. However, palm-vein recognition faces various challenges in practical applications, one of which is the lack of robustness against image quality degradation, resulting in reduction of the verification accuracy. To address this problem, this paper proposes an end-to-end convolutional neural network to automatically extract vein network features, thus without resorting to any hand-crafted features. Firstly, we label the palm-vein pixels based on several handcraft-based segmentation methods and reconstruct a training set accordingly. Secondly, an end-to-end vein segmentation model is proposed based on a generative adversarial network. After training, this model outputs a map where each value is the probability that the corresponding pixel belongs to a vein pattern. The resulting map is then subject to binarization by thresholding and stored in a binary image, used subsequently for verification matching. The experimental results on the public CASIA palm-vein dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
