In this paper we present a new method for the decomposition of musical sounds into causal and anticausal contributions. The algorithm is based on a particular separation of zeros of the Z-Transform (ZZT) of signal frames, currently used in speech processing for glottal source parameters estimation. Acoustics of two particular continuous interaction instruments (CII) - trumpet and violin - is discussed and the use of a mixed-phase model for synthesis is proposed. First results are presented and relevance of extracted causal and anticausal contributions is evaluated.

Five expressions are commonly considered to characterize human emotional states: Happiness, Surprise, Anger, Sadness and Neutral. Different measures can be extracted from speech signals to characterize these expressions, for example the pitch, the energy, the SPI and the speech rate. Automatic classification of the five expressions based on these features shows a great confusion between Anger, Surprise and Happiness on the one hand and Neutral and Sadness on the other hand. Such a confusion is also observed when humans make the same classification. We propose to define two classes of expression: Active gathering Happiness, Surprise and Anger versus Passive gathering Neutral and Sadness. Such a partition is also better suited for the integration of speech information in a multimodal classification system based on speech and video, which is the long term aim of our work. In this paper, we test several classification methods, namely a Bayesian classifier, a Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), the K Nearest Neighbours (KNN) and a Support Vector Machine with gaussian radial basis function kernel (SVM). For the considered two classes, the best performances are achieved with the SVM classifier with a recognition rate of 89.74% for Active state and of 86.54 % for Passive state.

In this contribution we propose two new designs of transmit and receive processing for multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems that employ filter bank based multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM). Our goal is to overcome the limits on the channel frequency selectivity and/or the allowed number of receive antennas per user terminal that are imposed on the state-of-the-art solutions. In the first method the design of precoders and equalizers is iterative and minimum mean square error (MMSE) based. The second is a closed-form design based on the signal-to-leakage ratio (SLR). Via numerical simulations we evaluate the performance of both methods and demonstrate their superiority over two other approaches in the literature. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper provides solutions for per-user multistream transmissions in FBMC/OQAM based multi-user MIMO downlink systems under highly frequency selective propagation conditions. A signal-to-leakage-plus-noise-ratio (SLNR) based metric is proposed, and it is tailored for the downlink of FBMC/OQAM-based multi-user MIMO settings. Then at the base station, per-subcarrier fractionally spaced multi-tap precoders are computed based on this metric to mitigate the multi-user interference (MUI), the inter-symbol interference (ISI), as well as the inter-carrier interference (ICI) and to map the multiple data streams of each user to the transmit antennas. With the base station carrying most of the computational load, each user terminal only employs a zero-forcing (ZF) based one-tap spatial equalizer to recover the desired streams. Simulation results show that the proposed SLNR based precoding scheme achieves satisfactory performances in various multi-user MIMO downlink scenarios. The problem of pitch tracking has been extensively studied in the speech research community. The goal of this paper is to investigate how these techniques should be adapted to singing voice analysis, and to provide a comparative evaluation of the most representative state-of-the-art approaches. This study is carried out on a large database of annotated singing sounds with aligned EGG recordings, comprising a variety of singer categories and singing exercises. The algorithmic performance is assessed according to the ability to detect voicing boundaries and to accurately estimate pitch contour. First, we evaluate the usefulness of adapting existing methods to singing voice analysis. Then we compare the accuracy of several pitch-extraction algorithms, depending on singer category and laryngeal mechanism. Finally, we analyze their robustness to reverberation.

Multicarrier communication technologies are promising candidates for 4G wireless access systems. In this paper, we focus on the downlink of multicellular networks and we investigate the influence of the inter-cell interference in an unsynchronized frequency division duplex (FDD) context with a frequency resuse of 1. We compare the conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with cyclic prefix modulation (CP-OFDM) and the filter bank based multi-carrier modulation (FBMC). Two tables modeling the mean interference power are given and show that, in FBMC case, the interference is more localized than in OFDM case. Finally, these tables are used to evaluate performance in terms of average capacity in FBMC multi-cell networks compared to CP-OFDM ones.

In this paper, we present the first step of a project that is able to perform both speech and singing synthesis controlled in real-time. Our aim is to develop a flexible application allowing performers to produce complex and versatile singing - as well as speech - articulations. Thus, we have adapted an existing speech synthesizer, the MBROLA software, to real-time singing constraints. The work presented in this paper concerns the integration of the MBROLA speech synthesizer into the Max/MSP real-time environment through the development of an external object. We present real-time control functions of the object and discuss its limitations. We further discuss about perspectives in the development of MBROLA-based computer music applications.
