ELCD-NSC2: a novel early lung cancer detection and non-small cell classification framework

The survival rate of lung cancer relies significantly on how far the disease has spread when it is detected, how it reacts to the treatment, the patient’s overall health, and other factors. Therefore, the earlier the lung cancer diagnosis, the higher the survival rate. For radiologists, recognizing malignant lung nodules from computed tomography (CT) scans is a challenging and time-consuming process. As a result, computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been suggested to alleviate these burdens. Deep-learning approaches have demonstrated remarkable results in recent years, surpassing traditional methods in different fields. Researchers are currently experimenting with several deep-learning strategies to increase the effectiveness of CAD systems in lung cancer detection with CT. This work proposes a deep-learning framework for detecting and diagnosing lung cancer. The proposed framework used recent deep-learning techniques in all its layers. The autoencoder technique structure is tuned and used in the preprocessing stage to denoise and reconstruct the medical lung cancer dataset. Besides, it depends on the transfer learning pre-trained models to make multi-classification among different lung cancer cases such as benign, adenocarcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. The proposed model provides high performance while recognizing and differentiating between two types of datasets, including biopsy and CT scans. The Cancer Imaging Archive and Kaggle datasets are utilized to train and test the proposed model. The empirical results show that the proposed framework performs well according to various performance metrics. According to accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and AUC metrics, it achieves 99.60, 99.61, 99.62, 99.70, and 99.75%, respectively. Also, it depicts 0.0028, 0.0026, and 0.0507 in mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root mean square error metrics. Faults on distribution networks due to abnormal weather events can lead to disruption and can cause high socio-economic losses. In line with the rising frequency of such events, the paper proposes an algorithm for the optimal deployment of mobile battery units to restore sections of the network. The considered battery units are rated at 1MVA to keep them realistic for the mobile application. The placement algorithm is formulated as a mixed integer mathematical optimisation problem. Sectionalising/tie switches are assumed on each branch of the network in order to increase the restoration configuration flexibility. Photovoltaic systems, distributed along the network, are allowed to contribute to the restored network sections. A number of critical loads are defined and these are prioritised in the restoration process. The objective function also considers the reduction of the overall renewable energy curtailment. The performance of the algorithm is tested on the IEEE 33 bus network with four tie lines. Scenarios with increasing levels of PV power are considered and the effect of incorporating the PV power is studied. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

The nonlinear transformation used in reservoir computing can be effectively replaced by nonlinear vector autoregression (NVAR) for data prediction. In such a method, also known as next generation reservoir computing (NGRC), the input signal consists of a linear part, including several previous data points, and their nonlinear combinations. Here we show that the application of this method to a network with memristive weights (memristors) can be used to predict signals, depending on the nature of the nonlinear functions and the number of memristors. The network allows an accurate prediction of chaotic time series of Mackey-Glass and Duffing oscillators. © 2024 IEEE.

The paper deals with the design and implementation of safety functions for a CNC milling machine. It is a relatively small CNC milling machine that does not pose a great danger to trained persons. Because it is used in areas where even untrained persons can come into contact with it, it was necessary to implement a safety system that implements safety functions preventing accidents when entering the dangerous zone of the CNC milling machine. The safety system is implemented based on a safety PLC and the sensors are designed using a two-channel architecture to meet the required SIL (safety integrity level). © 2024 IEEE.

The article deals with the integration of Lo(ng) Ra(nge) Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) sensors with generic manufacturing applications and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) use-cases. The focus is on creating a suitable Edge device model that enables the integration of specific Long Range (LoRa) sensors together with the other generic Internet of Things (IoT/IIoT). The model is based on the Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture (OPC UA) standard, which is the most suitable integration platform for various control systems and manufacturing applications. The model was implemented in Node-RED software and subsequently validated to confirm the required integration of LoRaWAN sensors within OPC UA models. In contrast to other approaches based on integration gateway or LoRaWAN/OPC UA protocol convertors, the proposed model utilizes extended capabilities of Edge computing. It enables Edge processing and data transformation of LoRaWAN sensors data transferred by Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol from the network server, based on requirements of manufacturing applications for cloud solutions. © 2023 IEEE.

The development of a dynamic model for a popular implemented solar power plant is a critical task for power engineers aiming to enhance the plant’s performance and reliability. In this study, we utilized the prediction error method (PEM), a robust algorithm for system identification, to capture the plant’s operational characteristics with precision. Additionally, we employed both recursive and hierarchical algorithms to identify the system parameters effectively. The results from each identification method are rigorously quantified and analyzed, allowing for a detailed comparison of their performance. This comprehensive evaluation not only highlights the strengths and weaknesses of each approach, but also provides valuable insights into their practical applications in the context of solar power systems. © The Author(s) 2024.

One of the most important goals of theoretical ecologists is to find a strategy for controlling the chaos in ecological models to maintain healthy ecosystems. We investigate the influence of fear and the supply of additional food to predators in a delayed tri-trophic food chain model, where interference among the species is determined by Holling type-II functional response. The proposed model incorporates the fact that the growth rates of prey and middle predators are decreased due to the fear of middle and special predators, respectively. The additional food is supplied to both predators by either nature or external agencies. Furthermore, the poisoned prey in the predator's environment is taken into account. In the proposed model, we use two time delays: one for the growth term of the middle predator and another for the gestation delay of the special predator. We determine the conditions for the existence of ecologically feasible equilibrium points and their local and global stability. In addition, we establish the conditions for the existence of Hopf bifurcation around interior equilibrium to seek periodic behavior in nondelayed and delayed models. Numerical investigations are performed to justify the proposed theoretical findings through phase portraits, time series of solutions, and bifurcation diagrams. We observe that the chaotic dynamics of a tri-trophic food chain model can be controlled by the proper choice of the fear effect and by supplying additional food parameters. As a result, our findings provide more ecological insights into the dynamics of the delayed tri-trophic food chain model with the fear effect and additional food supply. © 2023 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper we focus on the target capturing problem for a swarm of agents modelled as double integrators in any finite space *** agent knows the relative position of the target and has only an estimation of its velocity and *** that the estimation errors are bounded by some known values,it is possible to design a control law that ensures that agents enter a user-defined ellipsoidal ring around the moving *** know the relative position of the other members whose distance is smaller than a common detection ***,in the case of no uncertainty about target data and homogeneous agents,we show how the swarm can reach a static configuration around the moving *** simulations are reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.

This research looks into electrical grids that will soon likely become more intelligent. In light of this, there is a growing need for intelligent, adaptable microgrids that can function both independently and in conjunction with the grid. Black start operation, frequency and voltage stability, active and reactive power flow regulation, active power filtering capabilities, and storage energy management are the features that these small grids are expected to have. Energy can be produced and stored in this way near its points of consumption, improving reliability and lowering losses from big power lines. The key ideas about intelligent microgrid configuration, control, and energy management are reviewed in this study. Attributes-wise, the microgrid can function by utilizing the following three primary hierarchical control levels, just like the main grid.: Primary control on the converter level, Secondary control to adjust the frequency and voltage of the AC grid, and Third-level control over additional global duties determine whether energy is imported or exported for the microgrid. when connected to the main utilities. Advancing one of the above-mentioned control levels or redesigning the microgrid can enhance the stand-alone ac microgrid inertia. © 2024 IEEE.

Pneumatic muscle actuators (PMAs) are efficient and versatile, mimicking natural muscle-Tendon systems. They are widely used in manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace industries due to their lightweight design, high force-To-weight ratio, and flexibility, making them suitable for delicate tasks and powerful exertions. Their application in industrial and biomechatronic systems highlights their potential to revolutionize automation and human-machine interaction. This research aimed to develop a PMA regulator using the Model Predictive control (MPC) framework. Researchers identified key PMA characteristics and defined attributes for the regulator, ensuring accurate signal tracking, effective uncertainty handling, and real-Time operation. The initial stages involved implementing a proportional-integral-derived (PID) controller, and by integrating a PID block with a linear MPC block, a tube MPC controller was developed to enhance performance. The controllers' responses were tested in noisy environments using a low-pass filter for evaluation. The tube MPC controller demonstrated optimal control, robustness, and expertise in managing uncertainties, making it a reliable choice for system control. © 2024 IEEE.
