Differential passivity of a nonlinear system has been introduced as passivity of its variational system. Applying standard passivity-based control techniques to differentially passive systems leads to controllers for the corresponding variational systems. However, it is challenging to construct controllers for the original nonlinear systems if the differential passive outputs are non-exact differential one-forms. In this letter, our objective is to provide a systematic procedure to address this issue when differential passive outputs are integrable, i.e., when non-exact differential passive outputs can be made exact by multiplying them by suitable integrating factors. In particular, under suitable detectability assumptions, we propose one static and two dynamic state feedback stabilizing controllers, where each dynamic controller has a form of input-and output-shaping, respectively. We illustrate their effectiveness by stabilization of counter-current heat exchangers.

Photovoltaic systems (PV) are exposed to various weather conditions during the day and getting the maximum power of a PV system is one of its major challenges. While the conventional methods take time to track the maximum power accompanying the fluctuation around the maximum power. Consequently, several metaheuristic algorithms have been presented to overcome the fluctuating around the maximum power. On the other hand optimization methods will search into entire the PV curve to extract the maximum power. This leads to unnecessary search points during the uniform shading conditions which decrease the convergence speed towards the maximum power. In overcoming the tracking time issues as well as the capacity to distinguish between uniform and partial shading conditions, a quick and efficient tracking technique connected to the grid system was presented in this paper. The proposed system, has been tested using MATLAB/SIMULINK, which includes a boost converter to track the maximum power with a sampling time of 0.05 seconds, While a voltage source converter (VSC) is used to transfer the power generated by solar panels to the grid. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed method was successfully implemented, with an average tracking time of 0.412 s for different weather conditions. Moreover, the comparison with the conventional method of perturb and observe (P& O) has been presented to evaluate the proposed method’s efficiency.

This work presents a memetic Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm(SFLA)based tuning approach of an Integral Sliding Mode controller(ISMC)for a quadrotor type of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAV).Based on the Newton–Euler formalism,a nonlinear dynamic model of the studied quadrotor is firstly established for control design *** the main parameters of the ISMC design are the gains of the sliding surfaces and signum functions of the switching control law,which are usually selected by repetitive and time-consuming trials-errors based procedures,a constrained optimization problem is formulated for the systematically tuning of these unknown *** time-domain operating constraints,such an optimization-based tuning problem is effectively solved using the proposed SFLA metaheuristic with an empirical comparison to other evolutionary computation-and swarm intelligence-based algorithms such as the Crow Search Algorithm(CSA),Fractional Particle Swarm Optimization Memetic Algorithm(FPSOMA),Ant Bee Colony(ABC)and Harmony Search Algorithm(HSA).Numerical experiments are carried out for various sets of algorithms’parameters to achieve optimal gains of the sliding mode controllers for the altitude and attitude dynamics *** studies revealed that the SFLA is a competitive and easily implemented algorithm with high performance in terms of robustness and non-premature *** results verified that the proposed metaheuristicsbased approach is a promising alternative for the systematic tuning of the effective design parameters in the integral sliding mode control framework.

Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents the design of supervisory model predictive control for HVAC systems with consideration of peak demand shaving and thermal comfort. In this work, we analyze the operating points with the thermal comfort requirement. Afterwards, we linearize the nonlinear dynamic model to a linear time-varying model. In particular, we specify that the operating point of the open-loop HVAC system satisfies the thermal comfort condition. This makes the predicted mean vote (PMV) equal to zero or nearly to zero. Subsequently, we calculate the zone temperature, the zone humidity ratio, and the volumetric flow rate. When considering the time-varying disturbance profiles, it appears that the operating points are time-varying. We observe that the coefficient of performance (COP) and the operating points are time-varying which lead to time-varying model. Moreover, we design supervisory control (SC) and model predictive control (MPC) for linear time-varying model. In the SC design, we aim to find the optimal reference zone temperature which is used as the reference signal for MPC. In the MPC design, the objectives are twofold. First, the zone temperature tracks the reference signal. Second, both electrical energy cost and deviation of desired thermal comfort are minimized. The computer simulation shows that MPC of time-varying HVAC system yields the best reference tracking. In addition, it reduces total electrical energy cost the most. We conclude that the optimal temperature reference can be effectively applied to the building HVAC systems while the occupants feel comfortable and the total electrical energy cost is the lowest.

Water is a crucial resource that has been experiencing a continuous decline in quality over the years. Therefore, treating water has become a top priority, and the need to respect it has been recognized since ancient times. UV-c technology is an excellent solution that addresses both of these requirements effectively. The concept of UV bactericidal treatment involves the generation of ultraviolet rays inside a treatment chamber containing water. To ensure the effectiveness of UV-c disinfection, it is crucial to provide a reliable power supply to the low-pressure mercury-argon discharge lamps. In this research, the main objective is to determine the most optimal power source. To achieve this goal, the discharge lamp-electronic ballast system will be powered by three different types of converters. The first power supply utilizes a conventional converter, consisting of a half-bridge rectifier and inverter with PWM control. The second power supply employs a 4-cell serial multicell converter, which adopts a control strategy that modulates duty cycles. The third power supply is based on a single-phase matrix converter. In order to achieve the desired amplitude and frequency, a linear adjustment of the current is applied using a PI regulator. This approach aims to improve the quality of the current waveform and reduce total harmonic distortion (THD). The simulations for these power supply configurations were conducted using Matlab/Simpower system.

In this research, we investigate Net-Zero Energy Houses (ZEH), which harness regionally produced electricity from photovoltaic (PV) panels and fuel cells, integrating them into a local power system in pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality. This paper examines the impact of electricity sharing among users who are working towards attaining ZEH status through the integration of PV panels and battery storage devices. We propose two potential scenarios: the first assumes that all users individually invest in storage devices, hence minimizing their costs on a local level without energy sharing;the second envisions cost minimization through the collective use of a shared storage device, managed by a central manager. These two scenarios are formulated as a stochastic convex optimization and a cooperative game, respectively. To tackle the stochastic challenges posed by multiple random variables, we apply the Monte Carlo sample average approximation (SAA) to the problems. To demonstrate the practical applicability of these models, we implement the proposed scenarios in the Jono neighborhood in Kitakyushu, Japan. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

During the COVID19 epidemic, people of all ages from all walks of life around the world have become inevitably familiar with and almost dependent on the digital tools of the age and the opportunities they offer. A change had to take place very quickly that was unprecedented. This process has also affected education. During the time of the reading lock-in, there was a proliferation of digital curricular content. The second time around, online education came to the fore, thanks to less or well-functioning online platforms, and has since become part of everyday teaching. What is the effectiveness and usefulness of sharing knowledge in this way? Is literacy still needed at all? Can online and hybrid (a controlled mix of face-to-face and online) education replace the well-established contact and face-to-face education? The study show that the respondents believe that online education has had an impact on literacy and that it is perceived to have a positive impact. The results indicate that online education has a positive impact on the literacy levels of students, as it facilitates knowledge acquisition and enhances digital literacy skills.

We present the outcomes of cycle aging tests performed on 16 lithium-ion battery cells of different types, both commercially available: INR21700M50LT produced by LG Energy Solution and INR18650M35A produced by Molicel. These cells exhibit differences in silicon content within the anode, coupled with the utilization of two different cathode materials. Throughout the testing process, the cells underwent cycling with different state of charge (SOC) windows: 0-90%, 0-30%, 30-60% and 60-90% as well as routine checkup phases, which include a measurement of the residual capacity and of the quasi-open circuit voltage (qOCV) curve. After 260 equivalent full cycles, we found substantial differences in the aging of the two cell types, evident in both their state of health and in the variations of the qOCV curve. The LG M50LT displayed a notably slower capacity fade up to 3x less with respect to the Molicel M35A under identical testing conditions. We also found out that cycling in the SOC window 0-90% produced the least pronounced variations in the qOCV curve of the LG M50LT, while the opposite is true for the Molicel M35A. This discrepancy cannot be explained only in terms of a different silicon content, therefore the reasons have to be searched in the complex interactions between the two anode materials, as well as in cathode material degradation.

In the last three years, a new partner has emerged for teachers and educators in the field of education. The mushrooming of applications based on large language models has greatly shaped the educational development fields of the present era. The use of various AI applications has become commonplace among students and teachers alike. Many questions are being raised by researchers in this field. What does the rapid development of AI applications bring to the field of pedagogy? Should the products of such applications be compared with human performance? The form presented in this thesis seeks to answer similar questions. What is the impact of frequent use of these applications on the literacy level of individuals? In which areas do students tend to use these applications? The results indicate that half of the students believe their literacy levels will decrease with the mass emergence of AI applications, while 36% feel it will not change. However, 88 % of students have already dealt with AI-based applications, with 64 % using them several times or more, suggesting a high level of integration into their educational processes.
