Decentralized stochastic gradient algorithms efficiently solve large-scale finite-sum optimization problems when all agents in the network are reliable. However, most of these algorithms are not resilient to adverse conditions, such as malfunctioning agents, software bugs, and cyber attacks. This paper aims to handle a class of general composite optimization problems over multi-agent systems (MASs) in the presence of an unknown number of Byzantine agents. Building on a resilient model-aggregation mechanism and the proximal-gradient mapping method, a Byzantine-resilient decentralized stochastic proximal-gradient algorithmic framework is proposed, dubbed ProxDBRO-VR, which achieves an optimization and control goal using only local computations and communications. To asymptotically reduce the noise variance arising from local gradient estimation and accelerate the convergence, we incorporate two localized variance-reduced (VR) techniques (SAGA and LSVRG) into ProxDBRO-VR to design Prox-DBRO-SAGA and Prox-DBRO-LSVRG. By analyzing the contraction relationships among the gradient-learning error, resilient consensus condition, and convergence error in a unified theoretical framework, it is proved that both Prox-DBRO-SAGA and Prox-DBRO-LSVRG, with a well-designed constant (resp., decaying) step-size, converge linearly (resp., sub-linearly) inside an error ball around the optimal solution to the original problem under standard assumptions. A trade-off between convergence accuracy and Byzantine resilience in both linear and sub-linear cases is also characterized. In numerical experiments, the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed algorithms are manifested via resolving a decentralized sparse machine-learning problem under various Byzantine attacks. Distributed design of deterministic discrete-time privacy preserving average consensus for multi-agent systems through network augmentation

Average consensus protocols emerge with a central role in distributed systems and decision-making such as distributed information fusion, distributed optimization, distributed estimation, and control. A key advantage of these protocols is that agents exchange and reveal their state information only to their neighbors. Yet, it can raise privacy concerns in situations where the agents' states contain sensitive information. In this paper, we propose a novel (noiseless) privacy preserving distributed algorithms for multi-agent systems to reach an average consensus. The main idea of the algorithms is that each agent runs a (small) network with a crafted structure and dynamics to form a network of networks (i.e., the connection between the newly created networks and their interconnections respecting the initial network connections). Together with a re-weighting of the dynamic parameters dictating the inter-agent dynamics and the initial states, we show that it is possible to ensure that the value of each node converges to the consensus value of the original network. Furthermore, we show that, under mild assumptions, it is possible to craft the dynamics such that the design can be achieved in a distributed fashion. Iris segmentation and localization in unconstrained environments is challenging due to long distances, illumination variations, limited user cooperation, and moving subjects. Some existing methods in the literature, each of which has somehow mitigated some of the mentioned issues. In this paper, motivated by these weaknesses, we propose a framework that employs a deep neural network-based approach to iris segmentation and localization. The proposed framework is based on a U-Net architecture that has been initialized with a pre-trained MobileNetV2 model. In addition, we have collected 1000 images to study the detectors in iris recognition scenarios better. The provided dataset (KartalOl) is available free for the research community. In the proposed framework, to better generalizability, we fine-tune the MobileNetV2 model on the provided data for NIR-ISL 2021 from the CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, and CASIA-Iris-Africa and our dataset. Also, data augmentation technics are applied on images. We chose the binarization threshold for the binary masks by iterating over the images in the provided dataset. The proposed framework is trained and tested in CASIA-Iris-Asia, CASIA-Iris-M1, CASIA-Iris-Africa, along the KartalOl dataset. The experimental results highlight that our method surpasses state-of-the-art methods on mobile-based benchmarks. This paper investigates a distributed formation tracking control law for large-scale networks of mechanical systems. In particular, the formation network is represented by a directed communication graph with leaders and followers, where each agent is described as a port-Hamiltonian system with a constant mass matrix. Moreover, we adopt a distributed parameter approach to prove the scalable asymptotic stability of the network formation, i.e., the scalability with respect to the network size and the specific formation preservation. The utilization of solar energy in grid-connected photovoltaic installations has become increasingly significant. This article introduces a photovoltaic system seamlessly integrated with a three-phase network. The system employing a five-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) voltage source inverter is designed for a single-step connection to enhance power quality in the distribution network. The control technique employed for the efficient functioning of the photovoltaic system is based on the notion of instantaneous reactive power. Notably, this strategy is straightforward, operates the system throughout the day, and eliminates the need for Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) usage. The Pulse-Width Modulated (PWM) Current controller sends switching signals to the NPC multilevel inverter, which does a great job of dynamic performance under steady-state and transient situations. The proportional-integral controller regulates the voltage of the Uninterruptible Power Supply DC bus capacitors. The proposed system undergoes comprehensive simulation validation under various irradiation levels.

Spatio-temporal decomposition of sum-of-squares programs for the region of attraction and reachability

This paper presents a method for calculating Region of Attraction of a target set (not necessarily an equilibrium) for controlled polynomial dynamical systems, using a hierarchy of semidefinite programming problems (SDPs). Our approach builds on previous work and addresses its main issue, the fast-growing memory demands for solving large-scale SDPs. The main idea in this work is in dissecting the original resource-demanding problem into multiple smaller, interconnected, and easier to solve problems. This is achieved by spatio-temporal splitting akin to methods based on partial differential equations. We show that the splitting procedure retains the convergence and outer-approximation guarantees of the previous work, while achieving higher precision in less time and with smaller memory footprint. © 2021, CC BY.

A scalable distributed dynamical systems approach to compute the strongly connected components and diameter of networks

Finding strongly connected components (SCCs) and the diameter of a directed network play a key role in a variety of discrete optimization problems, and subsequently, machine learning and control theory problems. On the one hand, SCCs are used in solving the 2-satisfiability problem, which has applications in clustering, scheduling, and visualization. On the other hand, the diameter has applications in network learning and discovery problems enabling efficient internet routing and searches, as well as identifying faults in the power grid. In this paper, we leverage consensus-based principles to find the SCCs in a scalable and distributed fashion with a computational complexity of O (Ddmax in-degree ) , where D is the (finite) diameter of the network and dmax in-degree is the maximum in-degree of the network. Additionally, we prove that our algorithm terminates in D + 1 iterations, which allows us to retrieve the diameter of the network. We illustrate the performance of our algorithm on several random networks, including Erdos-Rényi, Barabási- Albert, and Watts-Strogatz networks. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

LPV modeling of nonlinear systems: A multi-path feedback linearization approach

This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are described by input affine state-space (SS) representations. The conversion approach results in LPV-SS representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept, first the SS description of a given NL representation is transformed to a normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded into one NL function, which is factorized, based on a proposed algorithm, to construct an LPV representation of the original NL system. The overall procedure yields an LPV model in which the scheduling variable depends on the inputs and outputs of the system and their derivatives, achieving a practically applicable transformation of the model in case of low order derivatives. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then a modified procedure is proposed to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. High throughput event filtering: The interpolation-based DIF algorithm hardware architecture

In recent years, there has been rapid development in the field of event vision. It manifests itself both on the technical side, as better and better event sensors are available, and on the algorithmic side, as more and more applications of this technology are proposed and scientific papers are published. However, the data stream from these sensors typically contains a significant amount of noise, which varies depending on factors such as the degree of illumination in the observed scene or the temperature of the sensor. We propose a hardware architecture of the Distance-based Interpolation with Frequency Weights(DIF) filter and implement it on an FPGA chip. To evaluate the algorithm and compare it with other solutions, we have prepared a new high-resolution event dataset, which we are also releasing to the community. Our architecture achieved a throughput of 403.39 million events per second (MEPS) for a sensor resolution of 1280 × 720 and 428.45 MEPS for a resolution of 640 × 480. The averagevalues of the Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) index ranged from 0.844 to 0.999, depending on the dataset, which is comparable to the state-of-the-art filtering solutions, but with much higher throughput and better operation over a wide range of noise levels.

This paper points out the possibilities of using MATLAB in processing a large amount of measured data. An application created calculates and then graphically displays changes in individual statistical parameters of the measured mains voltage. Although the application works with voltage values, it can also be used for similar evaluation of changes in statistical parameters of other measured technical quantities, where the measured data are collected, which will be subsequently evaluated. © 2020 IEEE.
