Chimera states are dynamical states where regions of synchronous trajectories coexist with incoherent ones. A significant amount of research has been devoted to study chimera states in systems of identical oscillators, non-locally coupled through pairwise interactions. Nevertheless, there is an increasing evidence, also supported by available data, that complex systems are composed by multiple units experiencing many-body interactions, that can be modeled by using higher-order structures beyond the paradigm of classic pairwise networks. In this work we investigate whether phase chimera states appear in this framework, by focusing on a novel topology solely involving many-body, non-local and non-regular interactions, hereby named non-local d-hyperring, being (d + 1) the order of the interactions. We present the theory by using the paradigmatic Stuart-Landau oscillators as node dynamics, and show that phase chimera states emerge in a variety of structures and with different coupling functions. For comparison, we show that, when higher-order interactions are"flattened" to pairwise ones, the chimera behavior is weaker and more elusive. © 2023, CC BY.

Fractional cyber-neural systems - a brief survey

Neurotechnology has made great strides in the last 20 years. However, we still have a long way to go to commercialize many of these technologies as we lack a unified framework to study cyber-neural systems (CNS) that bring the hardware, software, and the neural system together. Dynamical systems play a key role in developing these technologies as they capture different aspects of the brain and provide insight into their function. Converging evidence suggests that fractional-order dynamical systems are advantageous in modeling neural systems because of their compact representation and accuracy in capturing the long-range memory exhibited in neural behavior. In this brief survey, we provide an overview of fractional CNS that entails fractional-order systems in the context of CNS. In particular, we introduce basic definitions required for the analysis and synthesis of fractional CNS, encompassing system identification, state estimation, and closed-loop control. Additionally, we provide an illustration of some applications in the context of CNS and draw some possible future research directions. Ultimately, advancements in these three areas will be critical in developing the next generation of CNS, which will, ultimately, improve people’s quality of life. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Discrete-time fractional-order dynamical networks minimum-energy state estimation

Fractional-order dynamical networks are increasingly being used to model and describe processes demonstrating long-term memory or complex interlaced dependencies amongst the spatial and temporal components of a wide variety of dynamical networks. Notable examples include networked control systems or neurophysiological networks which are created using electroencephalographic (EEG) or blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) data. As a result, the estimation of the states of fractional-order dynamical networks poses an important problem. To this effect, this paper addresses the problem of minimum-energy state estimation for discrete-time fractional-order dynamical networks (DT-FODN), where the state and output equations are affected by an additive noise that is considered to be deterministic, bounded, and unknown. Specifically, we derive the corresponding estimator and show that the resulting estimation error is exponentially input-to-state stable with respect to the disturbances and to a signal that is decreasing with the increase of the accuracy of the adopted approximation model. An illustrative example shows the effectiveness of the proposed method on real-world neurophysiological networks. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a fast, effective and robust features extraction system has been developed. To successfully design this hardware architecture, a conversion from RGB to HSV was applied. Likewise, hardware architecture of Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) method was proposed. Vivado System Generator (VSG) tool was used to design architectures. To validate the performance of the proposed system, Benchmarks was applied. Moreover, execution time and resources utilization demonstrated a promising quality of such proposed system.

This paper studies the dynamics of a new fractional-order discrete system based on the Caputo-like difference *** is the first study to explore a three-dimensional fractional-order discrete chaotic system without *** phase portrait,bifurcation diagrams,and largest Lyapunov exponents,it is shown that the proposed fractional-order discrete system exhibits a range of different dynamical ***,different tests are used to confirm the existence of chaos,such as 0-1 test and C0 *** addition,the quantification of the level of chaos in the new fractional-order discrete system is measured by the approximate entropy ***,based on the fractional linearization method,a one-dimensional controller to stabilize the new system is *** results are presented to validate the findings of the paper.

This work proposes a method to compute the maximum value obtained by a state function along trajectories of a Delay Differential Equation (DDE). An example of this task is finding the maximum number of infected people in an epidemic model with a nonzero incubation period. The variables of this peak estimation problem include the stopping time and the original history (restricted to a class of admissible histories). The original nonconvex DDE peak estimation problem is approximated by an infinite-dimensional Linear Program (LP) in occupation measures, inspired by existing measure-based methods in peak estimation and optimal control. This LP is approximated from above by a sequence of Semidefinite Programs (SDPs) through the moment-Sum of Squares (SOS) hierarchy. Effectiveness of this scheme in providing peak estimates for DDEs is demonstrated with provided examples.

Predictive direct speed control (PDSC) of electric motors makes the control of both electrical and mechanical systems possible over a single control law by eliminating the cascade control structure. Speed-sensorless control also reduces the cost of electric drive while increasing system reliability. In this paper, a speed-sensorless PDSC-based permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive is proposed, which combines the advantages of speed-sensorless control and the PDSC strategy. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is designed to estimate stator currents, speed, position, and load torque. By using estimated stator currents in the prediction models of the PDSC, a reduction in current/torque ripples is achieved. Additionally, EKF uses a PMSM model defined in the stator stationary reference frame to eliminate the adverse effect of the initial position estimation errors. The proposed drive system is tested in different operating conditions, and finally, satisfactory control performance is achieved overall.

Predictive direct speed control (PDSC) of electric drives eliminates the cascade control structure and provides faster speed and current/torque response, but suffers from the selection of weighting factors (WFs). This paper proposes a PDSC strategy without WFs for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The proposed method evaluates each control objective separately and decides on the optimum voltage vector using normalized Euclidean distances in $n$ -dimensional space generated by the objective functions. Simulation results show that it provides good control performance in different operating conditions with its inherent overcurrent protection feature while simplifying the design process. Finally, the proposed method overcomes the difficulty of WF selection in the traditional PDSC strategy with a slight additional computational load and also improves the overall control performance.

Consciousness has been historically a heavily debated topic in engineering, science, and philosophy. On the contrary, awareness had less success in raising the interest of scholars in the past. However, things are changing as more and more researchers are getting interested in answering questions concerning what awareness is and how it can be artificially generated. The landscape is rapidly evolving, with multiple voices and interpretations of the concept being conceived and techniques being developed. The goal of this paper is to summarize and discuss the ones among these voices that are connected with projects funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge called "Awareness Inside", a nonrecurring call for proposals within Horizon Europe that was designed specifically for fostering research on natural and synthetic awareness. In this perspective, we dedicate special attention to challenges and promises of applying synthetic awareness in robotics, as the development of mature techniques in this new field is expected to have a special impact on generating more capable and trustworthy embodied systems. © 2024, CC BY.

Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants.
