In this paper, control of parallel single-phase inverters in direct-quadrature(DQ) rotating frame based on droop method is proposed. For each inverter, a secondary orthogonal imaginary circuit is created to provide the second phase required for the transformation; thus a DQ model of the inverter is obtained. The DQ transformation provides a time-invariant model of the inverter which makes the control design similar to that of dc-dc converters. The recognition of this analogy is important in that all of advanced dc-dc converters control techniques that have been previously developed can be applied to the control parallel inverters. The controller then is designed in DQ frame. Theoretically, infinite loop gain can be achieved in DQ rotating frame resulting in the elimination of the steady state error at the fundamental frequency of the inverter. The output impedance of the inverters is also considered, to ensure the decoupling between active and reactive power control using droop method. Simulation results are provided to prove the concept.

IVUS-derived virtual histology (VH) permits the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque morphology by using radiofrequency analysis of ultrasound signals. However, it requires the acquisition to be ECG-gated, which is a major limitation of VH. Indeed, its computation can only be performed once per cardiac cycle, which significantly decreases the longitudinal resolution of VH. To overcome this limitation, the introduction of an image-based plaque characterization is of great importance. Current IVUS image processing techniques do not allow adequate identification of the coronary artery plaques. This can be improved by defining appropriate features for the different kinds of plaques. In this paper, a novel feature extraction method based on Run-length algorithm is presented and used for improving the automated characterization of the plaques within the IVUS images. The proposed feature extraction method is applied to 200 IVUS images obtained from five patients. As a result an accuracy rate of 77% was achieved. Comparing this to the accuracy rates of 75% and 71% obtained using co-occurrence and local binary pattern methods respectively indicates the superior performance of the proposed feature extraction method.

This paper deals with the concept of (integer-order) memristive systems, which are generalized to non-integer order case using fractional calculus. We consider the memory effect of the fractional inductor (fractductor), fractional capacitor and fractional memristor. We also show that the memory effect of such devices can be also used for an analogue implementation of the fractional-order operator, namely fractional-order integral and fractional-order derivatives. This kind of operator is useful for realization of the fractional-order controllers. We present theoretical description of such implementation and we proposed the practical realization and did some simulations and experimental measurements as well.

The aim of the paper is the use of modelling within development of safety-related communication systems presented in the areas where guaranty of a safety integrity level is required. The basic principles and standards used in the process of safety evaluation in closed transmission systems are summarised in the paper. Dangerous states of the system are mainly caused by systematic failures within a specification of the system, electromagnetic disturbance and random failures the HW effects. The main part of the paper describes the safety analysis process on the example of the end to end closed transmission system with the use of the fault tree and Markov's chain.

With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.

Design of an effective ventilation system for the road tunnel is usually a challenging task whose solution is less or more tending to optimum. Predictive control seems to be a promising approach that can help to improve properties of existing ventilation systems applied in road tunnels. Advantages of predictive control result mainly from its ability to solve both SISO and MIMO tasks, to have regard for dynamics of process changes in a broad extent, to compensate effect of measurable and non-measurable failures and to formulate the task as an "optimization control task" considering limiting conditions of control actions, changes of control actions and output variables. Data characterising the existing ventilation system can be used to analyse and identify the system and create Its stochastic model. Thereafter the predictive control of ventilation can be designed enabling to predict concentrations of pollutants and optimize system operation.

Many real dynamic systems are better characterized using a non-integer order dynamic model based on fractional calculus or, differentiation or integration of non-integer order. Traditional calculus is based on integer order differentiation and integration. The concept of fractional calculus has tremendous potential to change the way we see, model, and control the nature around us. Denying fractional derivatives is like saying that zero, fractional, or irrational numbers do not exist. In this paper, we offer a tutorial on fractional calculus in controls. Basic definitions of fractional calculus, fractional order dynamic systems and controls are presented first. Then, fractional order PID controllers are introduced which may make fractional order controllers ubiquitous in industry. Additionally, several typical known fractional order controllers are introduced and commented. Numerical methods for simulating fractional order systems are given in detail so that a beginner can get started quickly. Discretization techniques for fractional order operators are introduced in some details too. Both digital and analog realization methods of fractional order operators are introduced. Finally, remarks on future research efforts in fractional order control are given.

Data for human sleep study may be affected by internal and external influences. The recorded sleep data contains complex and stochastic factors, which increase the difficulties for the computerized sleep stage determination techniques to be applied for clinical practice. The aim of this study is to develop an automatic sleep stage determination system which is optimized for variable sleep data. The main methodology includes two modules: expert knowledge database construction and automatic sleep stage determination. Visual inspection by a qualified clinician is utilized to obtain the probability density function of parameters during the learning process of expert knowledge database construction. Parameter selection is introduced in order to make the algorithm flexible. Automatic sleep stage determination is manipulated based on conditional probability. The result showed close agreement comparing with the visual inspection by clinician. The developed system can meet the customized requirements in hospitals and institutions.

In this paper, we propose a decentralized control scheme for combined motion/force control of nonredundant multi-manipulator robotic systems, cooperatively grasping a rigid body in a prespecified position/force trajectory. The proposed control scheme uses the impedance method for modeling the internal force exerted by the end effectors to the object. The precise mathematical analysis of the overall dynamical system and the proposed controller are presented and the stability of the overall system is studied. The proposed controller, then, is applied to a cooperative system composed of two PUMA560 manipulators and the simulation results are presented to verify the proposed control scheme.

Material or fluid transportation is a commonly encountered phenomenon in industrial applications, generating variable time delay that makes the design of feedback control loops more difficult. This paper investigates the applicability of MPC (Model Predictive control) strategies to this type of processes. The experimental setup consists of a heated tank, of which the outlet temperature (measured at a certain distance from the tank) is controlled by manipulating the outlet flow. The nonlinear EPSAC (Extended Prediction Self-Adaptive control) approach is used, which reduces the complexity of nonlinear optimization to iterative quadratic programming. It is shown that developing a process model in which dynamics are decoupled from the variable time delay leads to a Smith predictor-like control structure, that allows the proper operation of the control loop with fixed control parameters. The performance of the predictive controller is compared on the pilot plant to the performance of classic control approaches for systems with time delay.
