We address the problem of safely coordinating a network of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) in conflict areas of a traffic network. Such problems can be solved through a combination of tractable optimal control problems and Control Barrier Functions (CBFs) that guarantee the satisfaction of all constraints. These solutions can be reduced to a sequence of Quadratic Programs (QPs) which are efficiently solved online over discrete time steps. However, guaranteeing the feasibility of the CBF-based QP method within each discretized time interval requires the careful selection of time steps which need to be sufficiently small. This creates computational requirements and communication rates between agents which may limit the controller's application to real CAVs. We tackle this limitation by adopting an event-triggered control approach for CAVs such that the next QP is triggered by properly defined events with a safety guarantee. We present a laboratory-scale test bed developed to emulate merging roadways using mobile robots as CAVs. We present results to demonstrate how the event-triggered scheme is computationally efficient and can handle measurement uncertainties and noise compared to time-driven control while guaranteeing safety. © 2023 IEEE.

This study addresses linear attacks on remote state estimation within the context of a constrained alarm rate. Smart sensors, which are equipped with local Kalman filters, transmit innovations instead of raw measurements through a wireless communication network. This transmission is vulnerable to malicious data interception and manipulation by attackers. The aim of this research is to identify the optimal attack strategy that degrades the system performance while adhering to stealthiness constraints. A notable innovation of this paper is the direct association of the attack's stealthiness with the alarm rate, diverging from traditional approaches that rely on the covariance of the innovation or the Kullback-Leibler divergence, which are conventional metrics that have been extensively explored in previous studies. Our findings reveal that the optimal attack strategy exhibits some structural characteristics in systems of low dimensions. The performance of the proposed attack strategy is demonstrated through numerical examples. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed Nash equilibrium for pursuit-evasion game with one evader and multiple pursuers

This paper investigates the pursuit-evasion problem involving one evader and multiple pursuers with limited sensing capability, where the evader tries to maximize the distance with the pursuers, while the pursuers have different objectives based on whether they can receive the information of the evader. The subgroup of pursuers who can observe the evader(called leaders) tries to be close to the evader, and the other subgroup of pursuers(called followers) tries to synchronize with their neighbors. When the subgraph formed by all leaders is complete, sufficient conditions are given to guarantee that the pursuers capture the evader and the pursuit-evasion game composed of the evader and leaders reaches Nash equilibrium. Furthermore, for the incomplete subgraph case, the distributed observers are proposed to estimate the relative positions between the evader and all leaders. It is shown that the distributed control strategy based on the observers converges exponentially to the Nash equilibrium solution, and makes the pursuers capture the evader. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.

The popularity of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)stems from their simple propulsion systems and structural ***,their complex and nonlinear dynamic behavior presents a significant challenge for control,necessitating sophisticated algorithms to ensure stability and accuracy in *** strategies have been explored by researchers and control engineers,with learning-based methods like reinforcement learning,deep learning,and neural networks showing promise in enhancing the robustness and adaptability of quadrotor control *** paper investigates a Reinforcement Learning(RL)approach for both high and low-level quadrotor control systems,focusing on attitude stabilization and position tracking tasks.A novel reward function and actor-critic network structures are designed to stimulate high-order observable states,improving the agent’s understanding of the quadrotor’s dynamics and environmental *** address the challenge of RL hyper-parameter tuning,a new framework is introduced that combines Simulated Annealing(SA)with a reinforcement learning algorithm,specifically Simulated Annealing-Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient(SA-TD3).This approach is evaluated for path-following and stabilization tasks through comparative assessments with two commonly used control methods:Backstepping and Sliding Mode Control(SMC).While the implementation of the well-trained agents exhibited unexpected behavior during real-world testing,a reduced neural network used for altitude control was successfully implemented on a Parrot Mambo mini *** results showcase the potential of the proposed SA-TD3 framework for real-world applications,demonstrating improved stability and precision across various test scenarios and highlighting its feasibility for practical deployment.

Natural disasters (NDs) have always been a major threat to human lives and infrastructure, causing immense damage and loss. In recent years, the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters have highlighted the need for more effective and efficient disaster management strategies. In this context, the use of technology has emerged as a promising solution. In this survey paper, we explore the employment of recent technologies in order to relieve the impacts of various natural disasters. We provide an overview of how different technologies such as Remote Sensing, Radars and Satellite Imaging, internet-of-things (IoT), Smartphones, and Social Media can be utilized in the management of NDs. By utilizing these technologies, we can predict, respond, and recover from NDs more effectively, potentially saving human lives and minimizing infrastructure damage. The paper also highlights the potential benefits, limitations, and challenges associated with the implementation of these technologies for natural disaster management purposes. While the use of technology can significantly improve NDM, there are also various challenges that need to be addressed, such as the cost of implementation and the need for specialized knowledge and skills. Overall, this survey paper provides a comprehensive overview of the use of technology in managing NDs and sheds light on the important role such technologies can play in NDM. By exploring the potential applications of different technologies, this paper aims to contribute to the development of more effective and sustainable disaster management strategies. © 2023 The Authors

Nanophotonic structures, such as photonic crystals, plasmonic nanostructures, and metamaterials, present transformative potential in advancing optical devices through innovative design capabilities. Among these, metamaterials—specifically metal–insulator–metal (MIM)-based absorbers—stand out for their ability to achieve high electromagnetic wave absorption across designated frequencies, proving valuable in applications ranging from solar cells to sensors. This study focuses on designing a high-efficiency MXene–SiO2–silver MIM metasurface absorber, leveraging deep learning techniques to streamline and enhance the simulation process traditionally reliant on finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) or finite-element methods (FEMs). By utilizing a deformable convolutional neural network (CNN), the proposed model predicts absorption spectra from metasurface geometries with superior accuracy and reduced computational demand while achieving dynamic spatial transformation handling. The model’s accuracy is further elucidated through Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM), which provides insights into the absorber’s most influential regions, supporting targeted optimization for specific applications. This deep learning approach demonstrates significant advantages over conventional methods in efficiency and adaptability, advancing the development of high-performance nanophotonic devices. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group. In several Machine Learning (ML) clustering and dimensionality reduction approaches, such as nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), RESCAL, and K-Means clustering, users must select a hyper-parameter k to define the number of clusters or components that yield an ideal separation of samples or clean clusters. This selection, while difficult, is crucial to avoid overfitting or underfitting the data. Several ML applications use scoring methods (e.g., Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores) to evaluate the cluster pattern stability for a specific k. The score is calculated for different trials over a range of k, and the ideal k is heuristically selected as the value before the model starts overfitting, indicated by a drop or increase in the score resembling an elbow curve plot. While the grid-search method can be used to accurately find a good k value, visiting a range of k can become time-consuming and computationally resource-intensive. In this paper, we introduce the Binary Bleed method based on binary search, which significantly reduces the k search space for these grid-search ML algorithms by truncating the target k values from the search space using a heuristic with thresholding over the scores. Binary Bleed is designed to work with single-node serial, single-node multi-processing, and distributed computing resources. In our experiments, we demonstrate the reduced search space gain over a naive sequential search of the ideal k and the accuracy of the Binary Bleed in identifying the correct k for NMFk, K-Means pyDNMFk, and pyDRESCALk with Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores. We make our implementation of Binary Bleed for the NMF algorithm available on GitHub. © 2024 IEEE.

Much of human knowledge in cybersecurity is encapsulated within the ever-growing volume of scientific papers. As this textual data continues to expand, the importance of document organization methods becomes increasingly crucial for extracting actionable insights hidden within large text datasets. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) serve as a means to store factual information in a structured manner, providing explicit, interpretable knowledge that includes domain-specific information from the cybersecurity scientific literature. One of the challenges in constructing a KG from scientific literature is the extraction of ontology from unstructured text. In this paper, we address this topic and introduce a method for building a multi-modal KG by extracting structured ontology from scientific papers. We demonstrate this concept in the cybersecurity domain. One modality of the KG represents observable information from the papers, such as the categories in which they were published or the authors. The second modality uncovers latent (hidden) patterns of text extracted through hierarchical and semantic non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), such as named entities, topics or clusters, and keywords. We illustrate this concept by consolidating more than two million scientific papers uploaded to arXiv into the cyber-domain, using hierarchical and semantic NMF, and by building a cyber-domain-specific KG. © 2024 IEEE.

Furthermore, the survey navigates through the latest technological trends and advancements in cryptoprocessor design. This includes discussions on post-quantum cryptography, secure enclaves, and mitigating side-channel attacks, all of which are shaping the future of cryptoprocessors. Real-world use cases and applications in domains such as secure communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and data centers are presented, showcasing the practical significance of cryptoprocessors. However, the paper also highlights the persistent challenges faced by cryptoprocessor designers and provides insights into future research directions aimed at addressing emerging security and performance issues.
