This poster introduces SynMotion, a novel mmWave-based human motion sensing system addressing the scarcity of training datasets. By synthesizing mmWave signals using existing vision-based human motion datasets, this system overcomes the challenge of collecting and labeling mmWave data, facilitating wider adoption of mmWave technology for applications like activity recognition, skeleton tracking and radar placement recommendation.

Anomaly detection is essential to ensure the safety of industrial processes. This paper presents an anomaly detection approach based on the probability density estimation and principle of justifiable granularity. First, time series data are transformed into a two-dimensional information granule by the principle of justifiable granularity. Then, the test statistic is constructed, and the probability density and cumulative distribution functions of the test statistic are calculated. Next, the confidence level determines the test threshold. Finally, the time series data of a key parameter in the sintering process is used as a case study. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed approach can detect abnormal time series data effectively, providing an accurate and effective solution for detecting time series anomalies in industrial processes. © 2023 IEEE.

Recent advances in optical coherence tomography such as the development of high speed ultrahigh resolution scanners and corresponding signal processing techniques may reveal new potential biomarkers in retinal diseases. Newly visible features are, for example, small hyperreflective specks in age-related macular degeneration. Identifying these new markers is crucial to investigate potential association with disease progression and treatment outcomes. Therefore, it is necessary to reliably detect these features in 3D volumetric scans. Because manual labeling of entire volumes is infeasible a need for automatic detection arises. Labeled datasets are often not publicly available and there are usually large variations in scan protocols and scanner types. SHEATH: Defending Horizontal Collaboration for Distributed CNNs against Adversarial Noise

As edge computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) expand, horizontal collaboration (HC) emerges as a distributed data processing solution for resource-constrained devices. In particular, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model can be deployed on multiple IoT devices, allowing distributed inference execution for image recognition while ensuring model and data privacy. Yet, this distributed architecture remains vulnerable to adversaries who want to make subtle alterations that impact the model, even if they lack access to the entire model. Such vulnerabilities can have severe implications for various sectors, including healthcare, military, and autonomous systems. However, security solutions for these vulnerabilities have not been explored. This paper presents a novel framework for Secure Horizontal Edge with Adversarial Threat Handling (SHEATH) to detect adversarial noise and eliminate its effect on CNN inference by recovering the original feature maps. Specifically, SHEATH aims to address vulnerabilities without requiring complete knowledge of the CNN model in HC edge architectures based on sequential partitioning. It ensures data and model integrity, offering security against adversarial attacks in diverse HC environments. Our evaluations demonstrate SHEATH’s adaptability and effectiveness across diverse CNN configurations. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Agriculture is under constant pressure to increase the production rate and to provide more food or resources for other industries. Without precision agriculture it is not possible to fulfil these requirements. Medium and large-size farms already adopted this technology, but small farms are far from precision agriculture due to the high initial costs. In this paper we present a bespoke and affordable multispectral camera for precision farming and illustrate its application in the detection of Flavescence dorée. This is a grapevine disease that makes a great concern to grapevine producers in the whole Mediterranean region. Flavescence dorée is the only quarantine disease in the European region. The related mandatory control procedures include uprooting every infected plant, with the obligation to uproot the vineyard when the infection exceed the 20% of threshold infection, hence resulting in a high economical loss. Thus, it is highly important to detect even a single infected plant over an entire vineyard plot, preventing the spreading of Flavescence dorée at earliest stages. We used the in-house developed multispectral camera together with a hyperspectral camera to acquire data from two vineyards near Riva del Garda, Trentino, Italy, during the summer of 2022. These data are the starting point for selecting the optimal spectral bands for the detection of Flavescence dorée using affordable multispectral approaches and developing an appropriate classification algorithm. © 2022 IEEE.

The pansharpening of high-resolution panchromatic (Pan) image and low-resolution multispectral (MS) images represents an important task in the remote sensing field. It allows the joint exploitation of the information derived from both types of images. However, this may cause a distortion of spectral information or a lack in details and structures. The multiresolution analysis using wavelet transforms has proved its efficiency in the pansharpening domain, due to the representation of the image content over different resolution levels. In image fusion applications, we always need more detail information to be incorporated in the pansharpening procedure in order to produce enhanced results. However, the limitation of the wavelet transform to three types of oriented detail coefficients prevents this need from being met. To overcome this limitation, we propose to use the redundant contourlet transform (RCT) which extracts a richer multiscale directional information from the image. For this purpose, two RCT-based pansharpening methods are introduced and suitable data fusion procedures are described. We conducted several experiments on two different datasets acquired respectively by ALSAT-2A and IKONOS satellites. The visual results as well as quantitative results from evaluation metrics demonstrate the performance of the proposed methods. © 2023 IEEE.

Contactless fingerprint authentication has gained popularity as a field of research in biometrics in recent years. Unlike traditional fingerprint recognition systems that require direct contact of the person’s finger with the sensor, contactless fingerprint systems offer several advantages, among them ease of capture and cost-effectiveness. Despite the progress made in this field, poor contrast, background noise, and limited image information continue to pose difficulties for fingerprint recognition in contactless environments. Furthermore, the number of images in published fingerprint biometric datasets for each person is restricted, and there is insufficient data for efficient training. Nevertheless, Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures have been widely used, necessitating large databases. To address these issues, this paper introduces a Siamese network designed for the purpose of identity Verification, using the contactless thumb fingerprint modality to enhance recognition results. The Siamese network is able to extract pertinent features from noisy images with low contrast and limited information, even if they have limited information and low contrast. Additionally, this work proposes the use of the contactless thumb fingerprint modality instead of the contactless index fingerprint modality, which is more commonly used in related works. Consequently, the Mobile FingerPrint (MFP) dataset is introduced and constructed for evaluation. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method, achieving an accuracy of 98.68% for thumb fingerprint Verification.

On Radically Expanding the Landscape of Potential Applications for Automated-Proof Methods

In this paper, we examine the potential of optimization-based computer-assisted proof methods to be applied much more widely than commonly recognized by engineers and computer scientists. More specifically, we contend that there are vast opportunities to derive valuable mathematical results and properties that may be narrow in scope, such as in highly specialized engineering control applications, that are presently overlooked, because they have characteristics atypical of those that are conventionally studied in the areas of pure and applied mathematics. As a concrete example, we demonstrate use of sum-of-squares (SOS) optimization for certifying polynomial nonnegativity as a part of a proposed dimension-pinning strategy to prove that the inverse of the relative gain array (RGA) of a d-dimensional positive-definite matrix is doubly stochastic for d≤ 4. However, it is not specifically this result and solution method that are of principal interest in this paper but rather how they illustrate the relevance of optimization-based proof techniques to engineering system design more broadly. We believe that our paper is the first to explicitly emphasize the fundamental distinction between methods that can be applied to prove results/properties over a fixed number of dimensions versus those that hold generally. The latter class of problems is the conventional domain of mathematicians, but the former is what we propose to be a fertile and largely unrecognized class of problems that are amenable to automated-proof technologies, e.g., as we demonstrate using our novel dimension-pinning approach. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper explores a random access service for satellites capable of adapting to unintentional or intentional interference. Previous work does not address large bandwidth-delay product systems. This paper combines the challenges of each, developing a construct for stabilizing the protocol, accommodating long delays, mitigating interference and maximizing throughput.
