Anonymous wireless networks use covert relays to prevent unauthorized entities from determining communicating parties through traffic timing analysis. In a multipath anonymous network, the choice of which relay nodes should be covert, as well as the route selection by the network nodes, affect both the anonymity and network performance. Although assigning relays as covert and selecting routes composed of covert relays can provide higher anonymity, the selection of these two parameters will increase the packet dropping rate of the network. In this paper, we introduce an analytical framework for joint relay assignment and route selection in multi-path anonymous wireless networks. The main contributions of this work are two-fold. First, we show that joint relay assignment and route selection can be formulated as a convex optimization problem which guarantees global optimum solution. Second, as special cases of our formulation, we derive solutions for the problem of route selection to maximize anonymity when the relay configuration is given, as well as the problem of relay configuration for a given route selection.

A magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ)-based microwave detector is proposed and investigated. When the MTJ is excited by microwave magnetic fields, the relative angle between the free layer and pinned layer alternates, giving rise to an average resistance change. By measuring the average resistance change, the MTJ can be utilized as a microwave power sensor. Due to the nature of ferromagnetic resonance, the frequency of an incident microwave is directly determined. In addition, by integrating a mixer circuit, the MTJ-based microwave detector can also determine the relative phase between two microwave signals. Thus, the MTJ-based microwave detector can be used as an on-chip microwave phase and spectrum analyzer.

Recombination-amplitude calculations of noble gases, in both length and acceleration forms, beyond the strong-field approximation

Transition of an electron from a free to a bound state is critical in determining the qualitative shape of the spectrum in high-order-harmonic generation (HHG), and in tomographic imaging of orbitals. We calculate and compare the recombination amplitude, from a continuum state described by a plane wave and an outgoing scattering eigenstate, to the bound state for the noble gases that are commonly used in HHG. These calculations are based on the single active electron model and the Hartree-Fock-Slater method, using both the length form and the acceleration form of the dipole matrix element. We confirm that the recombination amplitude versus emitted photon energy strongly depends upon the wave function used to describe the free electron. Depending on the choice of the wave function and the dipole form, the square of the absolute value of the recombination amplitude can differ by almost two orders of magnitude near the experimentally measured Cooper minima. Moreover, only the outgoing scattering eigenstates with the length form roughly predict the experimentally observed Cooper minimum for Ar (∼50eV) and Kr (∼85eV). We provide a detailed derivation of the photorecombination cross sections from photoionization cross sections (PICSs) calculated by the relativistic random phase approximation (RRPA). For Ar, Kr, and Xe, we compare the total PICSs calculated using our recombination amplitudes with that obtained from RRPA. We find that PICS calculated using the outgoing scattering eigenstates with the length form is in better agreement with the RRPA calculations than the acceleration form.

Providing end-to-end reliability for data transmission is still an intractable challenge for delay-sensitive wireless multimedia networks. This paper deals with an unequal error protection (UEP) scheme for scalable video delivery over packet-lossy networks using forward error correction (FEC). The proposed cross-layer approach allows the wireless multimedia networks to jointly optimize the application layer and the error protection strategies available at the lower layers. The redundancy is tuned in accordance with both the wireless channel condition (as indicated by symbol error rate) and the time limit (as indicated by parity budget). Simulations demonstrate that the proposed cross-layer grouping scheme can significantly improve video transmission quality by allocating more correction bits to the vital frames, while the time constraint is satisfied and the complexity associated with performing this group allocation algorithm is reduced.

Period selection based techniques for resource distribution among concurrent control tasks have gained significant research interest in the last decade. The application of these techniques in the networked control environment may give rise to an asynchronous data communication between the sensor and the controller and may result in a variable delay in the loop. This work investigates the degrading effects of such variable delay on the control performance and presents novel delay compensation methods to effectively reduce the performance degradation. A linear estimation based approach is presented first where the time-stamp information of network messages is used to estimate the sensor value at the control task execution instants. Further, a periodic pattern in the successive delay values has been identified and a delay compensation scheme by online learning of the delay pattern is proposed. The application of the proposed schemes on an automotive wheel slip control system is shown to achieves significant performance improvement.

At Crypto'07, Goyal introduced the notion of accountable authority identity-based encryption (A-IBE) in order to mitigate the inherent key escrow problem in identity-based encryption, and proposed two concrete constructions. In an A-IBE system, if the private key generator (PKG) distributes a decryption key or produces an unauthorized decryption box for a user maliciously, it runs the risk of being caught and sued in the court of law with the help of a tracing algorithm. Subsequent efforts focused on constructions of A-IBE schemes with enhanced security. In these A-IBE constructions, the tracing algorithm needs to take a user's decryption key as input. If the user lost his key or is deliberately uncooperative in court, then we cannot implicate the PKG or the user. An interesting open problem left by Goyal et al. at CCS'08 is to consider the possibility of tracing a decryption box using only a public tracing key, or with the assistance of a tracing authority. In this paper, we address this problem positively. We first extend the original model of A-IBE to accommodate public traceability, and then propose an A-IBE scheme in the new model. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed scheme is the first A-IBE with public traceability. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The direct evaluation method was originally introduced in computational electromagnetics as a semi-analytical method for high precision computation of singular Galerkin inner products arising in surface integral equation formulations over planar triangular tessellations. Recently, the basic philosophy of the direct evaluation method was utilized for the development of fully numerical schemes. Here, we describe how these novel algorithms could lead to a general framework for accommodating, without significant retooling, a considerably wider repertoire of applications including weakly singular and strongly singular integrals with high-order basis/testing functions over curved surfaces and possibly with Greens functions expressed in spectral integral form, as well as singular integrals arising in shape derivatives of sensitivity analysis. The complete set of codes used in this work is available as free, open-source software.

Chromosomal aberrations and somatic mutations constitute key elements of the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), a clonal hematologic malignancy characterized by cytopenias, a dysplastic bone marrow and propensity to clonal evolution. Next generation sequencing (NGS) enables definition of somatic mutational patterns and clonal architecture as a discovery platform, and for clinical applications. We systematically applied NGS to 707 cases of MDS and MDS-related disorders. 205 cases (low-risk MDS: N=78, high-risk MDS: N=42, MDS/MPN: N=48 and sAML: N=37) were tested by whole exome sequencing (WES). For validation in an additional 502 patients (low-risk MDS: N=192, high-risk MDS: N=104, MDS/MPN: N=111 and sAML: N=95), targeted deep NGS was applied for 60 index genes which were most commonly affected in the cohort analyzed by WES. For NGS data analysis a statistical pipeline was developed to focus on: i) identification of the most relevant somatic mutations, and ii) minimization of false positive results. We studied serial samples from 21 exemplary informative patients. We also compared somatic mutational patterns to those seen in primary AML TCGA cohort (N=201). Given the size of the cohort, there was, for example, a 87% chance of seeing mutations at a frequency of 1% and a 98% of seeing those with a frequency of 2%. While focusing on the most common events, we observed 1117 somatic mutations in 199 genes. The 88 genes mutated mutated in >1% of cases with MDS carried 388 mutations in MDS+sAML (2.5/case), 128 in MDS/MPN (2.7/case) and 398 in pAML (2.0/case). The average number of mutations per case increased during progression (2.2 in lower-risk, 2.8 in higher-risk MDS, 3.4 in sAML). In MDS, the 30 most frequently affected genes were present at least once in 70% of patients. The 30 most frequently mutated genes in MDS/MPN were mutated in 82% of patients. This paper presents a new active overcurrent protection scheme for IGBT modules based on the evaluation of fault current level by measuring the induced voltage across the stray inductance between the Kelvin emitter and power emitter of IGBT modules. Compared with the commonly used desaturation protection, it provides a fast and reliable detection of fault current without any blanking time. Once a short circuit is detected, a current limiting and clamping function is activated to dynamically suppress the transient peak current, thus reducing the considerable energetic and thermal stresses induced upon the power device. Subsequently, a soft turn-off mechanism is employed aiming to reduce surge voltages induced by stray inductance under high current falling rate. Moreover, the proposed method provides flexible protection modes, which overcome the interruption of converter operation in the event of momentary short circuits. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach have been validated by simulation results with real component models in Saber. A Double Pulse Tester (DPT) based experimental test setup further verifies the proposed protection scheme.

In this paper, we propose a novel state estimation algorithm for linear discrete time systems with modeling errors characterized by stochastic parameter variation. We extend the moving horizon estimation method to deal with a system with stochastic parameters and provide the optimal solution to a stochastic finite horizon state estimation problem. Furthermore, a numerical simulation shows the effectiveness of the proposed method.
