In this paper, we discuss the threshold based stochastic resonance behavior of binary input, binary output discrete memoryless channels. We follow the basic model of Chapeau-Blondeau where he showed how the addition of external Gaussian noise could enhance channel capacity, thus providing an optimum channel capacity depending on both the threshold level and noise power of the system. In order to easily approximate channel capacity behavior, we use capacity bounds and approximations. © 2012 IEEE.

OFDM communication through warm shallow water acoustic channel (WSWA) is affected by snapping shrimp noise. Due to its impulsive broadband nature, the snapping shrimp noise is able to affect a large number of OFDM sub-carriers at once. The effect on the sub-carriers can be modeled as a symmetric α-stable (SαS) noise vector with dependent components. Although the performance of the conventional LDPC soft decoder is poorer in non-Gaussian SαS noise than in Gaussian noise, the performance can be improved by employing the dependency between the noise components while decoding. The multivariate probability densities and marginals are required in the computation of symbol a posteriori probabilities. For binary codes, the complexity of the algorithm using marginals is O(2 d N), where d is the number of dependent components and N is the length of the code. Practical implementation of a decoder employing dependency through marginals is infeasible for high number of dependent components. In order to address this problem we develop a lower complexity algorithm using the sub-Gaussian model of SαS vectors.

We present a novel approach for the fabrication of hierarchical electrodes that integrates bottom-up nanostructure self-assembly and top-down microfabrication processes. The electrodes consist of virus-templated nanostructures self-assembled on three-dimensional micropillars. Active battery material (V2O5) is conformally deposited using atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the hierarchical micro/nano network. Electrochemical testing of these electrodes indicates a 3-fold increase in energy density compared to nanostructures alone, while maintaining the high power characteristics. Investigation of capacity scaling for varying active material thickness reveals underlying limitations and highlights the importance of our method in controlling both energy and power density with structural hierarchy. © 2012 TRF.

The IEEE RAS Ontologies for Robotics and Automation Working Group is dedicated to developing a methodology for knowledge representation and reasoning in robotics and automation. As part of this working group, the Autonomous Robots sub-group is tasked with developing ontology modules for autonomous robots. This paper describes the work in progress on the development of ontologies for autonomous systems. For autonomous systems, the focus is on the cooperation, coordination, and communication of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The ontologies serve as a framework for working out concepts of employment with multiple vehicles for a variety of operational scenarios with emphasis on collaborative and cooperative missions. © 2012 IEEE.

MatchMaker is an automated collaborative filtering system that recommends friends to people on Facebook by analyzing and matching people's online profile with the profiles of TV characters. The goal of MatchMaker is to produce friend recommendations with rich contextual information through collaborative filtering in the existing social network. Using relationships in TV programs as a parallel comparison matrix, MatchMaker projects these relationships into reality to help people find friends whose personality and characteristics have been voted to suit them well by their social network. MatchMaker also encourages more TV content viewing by using the social network context and connections to provoke people's curiosity of TV characters whom they have been matched with in their social network.

The use of plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) as a novel method for the treatment of polymer surfaces is investigated. The effect of PIII treatment on the coefficient of friction, contact angle modification, and surface energy of silicone and EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) rubber are investigated as a function of pulse voltage, treatment time, and gas species. Low energy (0 - 8 keV) and high dose (∼1017 - 1018 ions/cm2) implantation of N2, Ar, and CF4 is performed using an inductively coupled plasma source (ICP) at low pressure (0.2 mTorr). PIII treatment reduces the coefficient of friction (μ) of silicone rubber from μ = 0.464 to the range μ = 0.176 - 0.274, and μ of EPDM rubber decreases from 0.9 to the range μ = 0.27 - 0.416 depending on processing conditions. The contact angle of water and diiodomethylene decreases after implantation and increases at higher doses for both silicone and EPDM rubber.

In this paper we propose a general active audition framework for auditory-driven Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). The proposed framework simultaneously processes speech and music on-the-fly, integrates perceptual models for robot audition, and supports verbal and non-verbal interactive communication by means of (pro)active behaviors. To ensure a reliable interaction, on top of the framework a behavior decision mechanism based on active audition policies the robot's actions according to the reliability of the acoustic signals for auditory processing. To validate the framework's application. to general auditory-driven HRI, we propose the implementation of an interactive robot dancing system. This system integrates three preprocessing robot audition modules: sound source localization, sound source separation, and ego noise suppression;two modules for auditory perception: live audio beat tracking and automatic speech recognition;and multi-modal behaviors for verbal and nonverbal interaction: music-driven dancing and speech-driven dialoguing. To fully assess the system, we set up experimental and interactive real-world scenarios with highly dynamic acoustic conditions, and defined a set of evaluation criteria. The experimental tests revealed accurate and robust beat tracking and speech recognition, and convincing dance beat-synchrony. The interactive sessions confirmed the fundamental role of the behavior decision mechanism for actively maintaining a robust and natural human-robot interaction.

The dynamics of multi-agent in nature have been largely studied for a long time to investigate how the aggregation of agents can move smoothly in complex environments without collision. The main insights can be summarized such that the aggregated dynamics of animals and particles can be explained by an individual's simple rules. In a similar vein, we conjecture that such simple rules for vehicle maneuvering can accommodate the fluid flow of traffic and reduce car accidents in highway and urban areas. In this paper, we first show the Reynolds' three rules are applicable to autonomous driving on a single lane. Moreover, we provide additional requirements and algorithms for multiple lanes. Based on these results, we show that the proposed nature-inspired driving maneuver can increase traffic flow by 1) mitigating shockwave at bottlenecks and 2) extending the perception range for better path planning, which requires the support of the vehicle autonomy and wireless communication, respectively. Finally, we prove the feasibility of our work with experiments using multiple UAVs.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted a great deal of research due to their wide-range of potential applications. Sensor deployment and coverage problems are their important issues. This article briefly introduces the principle of swarm intelligence (SI). A novel SI algorithm based on information sharing of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and diversity maintenance mechanism of Artificial Immune System (AIS) is designed and the model of coverage problems is given. Its applications in solving different deterministic and random coverage problems are given. The algorithm used in obtaining maximum coverage probability with given number of sensor nodes and minimum number of sensor nodes with required coverage probability of WSNs deterministic coverage, and determining the selected sensor nodes with coverage probability and connectivity requirement of WSNs random coverage, are analyzed in detail. The simulation results show the algorithm is practical. The applications of SI on K- coverage and connectivity problems in the future are also projected in the article. © 2012 ACADEMY PUBLISHER.

High-order harmonic generation in Xe, Kr, and Ar driven by a 2.1-μm source: High-order harmonic spectroscopy under macroscopic effects

We experimentally and numerically study the atomic response and pulse propagation effects of high-order harmonics generated in Xe, Kr, and Ar driven by a 2.1-μm infrared femtosecond light source. The light source is an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplifier, and a modified strong-field approximation and three-dimensional pulse propagation code are used for the numerical simulations. The extended cutoff in the long-wavelength-driven high-order harmonic generation has revealed the spectral shaping of high-order harmonics due to the atomic structure (or photorecombination cross section) and the macroscopic effects, which are the main factors of determining the conversion efficiency besides the driving wavelength. Using precise numerical simulations to determine the macroscopic electron wave packet, we are able to extract the photorecombination cross sections from experimental high-order harmonic spectra in the presence of macroscopic effects. We have experimentally observed that the macroscopic effects shift the observed Cooper minimum of Kr from 80 eV to 60–70 eV and wash out the Cooper minimum of Ar. Measured high-harmonic conversion efficiencies per harmonic near the cutoff are ∼10−9 for all three gases.
