Excessive gestational weight gain (GWG) represents a major public health concern. In this paper, we present a dynamical systems model that describes how a behavioral intervention can influence weight gain during pregnancy. The model relies on the integration of a mechanistic energy balance with a dynamical behavioral model. The behavioral model incorporates some well-accepted concepts from psychology: the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the principle of self-regulation which describes how internal processes within the individual can serve to reinforce the positive outcomes of an intervention. A hypothetical case study is presented to illustrate the basic workings of the model and demonstrate how the proper design of the intervention can counteract natural trends towards declines in healthy eating and reduced physical activity during the course of pregnancy. The model can be used by behavioral scientists to evaluate decision rules for adaptive time-varying behavioral interventions, or as the open-loop model for hybrid model predictive control algorithms acting as decision frameworks for such interventions.

Healthcare Interchange Exchange (HIE) is set of healthcare entities that link regions and nations around the world to share healthcare information about patients. HIE provides a unified interface to various stakeholders to access patient data. For example, individuals want to access personal data, practitioners want to import their patient data from Personal Health Records (PHR) and researchers want to access anonymized patient data for research purposes with ensured individual privacy. Keeping in view requirements of various stakeholders it is challenging to design an HIE system that ensures the security and privacy of patient information, such that the health records remain interoperable and scalable. This paper proposes, an HIE framework that will provide secure access to patient data and adhere to the interoperability rules. Implementation of l-diversity algorithm ensures individual privacy especially when the data is made available publicly for statistical analysis.

A significant design parameter for secure embedded systems is the performance of the cryptographic algorithms implementation. We present a performance analysis on the same hardware of the cryptographic libraries available on the Google Android 2.2 and Microsoft Windows Phone 7 smartphone platforms and show that they exhibit quite different characteristics. This is an important consideration for designing multi-platform, security-aware applications. The use of cryptography requires mechanisms for handling the cryptographic keys. This is a hard-to-address and error-prone procedure, especially in systems with intermittent connectivity. The previously proposed Control Randomness Protocol (CRP) reduces the need for frequent key refreshing and extends the useful lifetime of a given set of keys. We present SCRP, an adaptation of the CRP for the smartphone environment. We show that SCRP achieves an adjustable security level in a fraction of computation and communication overhead.
