In many robotic systems, the holding state consumes power, limits operating time, and increases operating costs. Electrostatic clutches have the potential to improve robotic performance by generating holding torques with low power consumption. A key limitation of electrostatic clutches has been their low specific shear stresses which restrict generated holding torque, limiting many applications. Here we show how combining the Johnsen-Rahbek (JR) effect with the exponential tension scaling capstan effect can produce clutches with the highest specific shear stress in the literature. Our system generated 31.3 N/cm

sheer stress and a total holding torque of 7.1 N•m while consuming only 2.5 mW/cm

at 500 V. We demonstrate a theoretical model of an electrostatic adhesive capstan clutch and demonstrate how large angle (θ > 2π) designs increase efficiency over planar or small angle (θ < π) clutch designs. We also report the first unfilled polymeric material, polybenzimidazole (PBI), to exhibit the JR-effect.

This paper introduces a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access (GF-NOMA) scheme. To ensure the power reception disparity required by the power domain NOMA (PD-NOMA), we propose a joint user clustering and RIS assignment/alignment approach that maximizes the network sum rate by judiciously pairing user equipments (UEs) with distinct channel gains, assigning RISs to proper clusters, and aligning RIS phase shifts to the cluster members yielding the highest cluster sum rate. Once UEs are acknowledged with the cluster index, they are allowed to access their resource blocks (RBs) at any time requiring neither further grant acquisitions from the base station (BS) nor power control as all UEs are requested to transmit at the same power. In this way, the proposed approach performs an implicit over-the-air power control with minimal control signaling between the BS and UEs, which has shown to deliver up to 20% higher network sum rate than benchmark GF-NOMA and grant-based optimal (OPT) PD-NOMA schemes depending on the network parameters. The given numerical results also investigate the impact of UE density, RIS deployment, and RIS hardware specifications on the overall performance of the proposed RIS-aided GF-NOMA scheme.

In the age of AI, mobile architectures such as smartphones are still "cold machines"; machines do not feel. If the architecture is able to feel users' feelings and runtime user experience (UX), it will accordingly adapt performance/energy to find the optimal system-operating state that consumes the least energy to satisfy users. In this paper, we will utilize users' facial expressions (FEs) to learn their runtime UX. We know that FEs are the natural and direct way for humans to convey their emotions and feelings. Our study reveals that FEs also reflect UX. Our research for the first time quantifies the link between FEs and UX. Leveraging this link, the architecture will be able to use the front camera to see FEs and feel users' UX. Based on UX, the architecture can appropriately provision computing resources. We propose Vi-energy system to realize the above idea. Our evaluation shows that Vi-energy reduces energy consumption by 52.9% at maximum and secures UX.

With the high integration of power electronic technologies in microgrids,the reliability assessment considering power electronic devices has become a hot ***,so far no research has considered the impact of the operation failure probability of power electronic equipment on the overall reliability of the *** paper aims to construct a holistic operation failure rate model of power electronic systems based on the overall reliability assessment of islanded microgrid with high penetration of renewable energy sources(RESs).In addition,to improve the reliability of islanded microgrid,the conventional battery energy storage system(BESS)is replaced by the hybrid energy storage system(HESS).Based on the proposed model,the operation failure models for the power electronic modules in microgrid are built and tested,and then the sensitivity analysis is performed for exploring the influence of various factors on the reliability of the microgrid.
