Spatial analysis and predictive modeling framework of truck parking and idling impacts on environmental justice communities

This study introduces a comprehensive modeling framework to analyze truck idling and parking activities, illustrated through a case study in environmental justice communities in Kern County, California. It includes 1) exploratory spatial and cluster analysis to identify hotspots of those truck activities and their influencing factors, and 2) advanced predictive models, particularly the Cross-Validated Random Forests model, to predict and investigate critical factors influencing truck idling time, parking search time, and inferred truck parking demand. The results reveal that the percentage of heavy-duty trucks and the specific land use influence truck idling time. For parking search time, key predictors include distance to major roads and employment in certain industries. The inferred truck parking demand model underscores the impact of commercial land use areas, proximity to major roads, and socioeconomic factors. These findings enable the identification of hotspots for truck idling and parking searches, facilitating targeted interventions such as optimizing land use planning, improving infrastructure around major roads, and enhancing parking facilities in commercial zones. Integrating spatial, socioeconomic, and GPS aggregate data, the methodology provides a scalable framework applicable to other regions facing similar challenges through data-driven planning and policy initiatives. © 2024

Anticancer drugs alter active nitrogen-cycling communities with effects on the nitrogen removal efficiency of a continuous-flow aerobic granular sludge system

There is increasing awareness of the presence of anticancer drugs (ACDs) in wastewater. Nonetheless, how ACDs affect the performance of wastewater treatment systems and their microbial populations remains largely unclear. This study investigated the effects of three common ACDs (cyclophosphamide, tamoxifen, and methotrexate) at varying concentrations on physicochemical parameters and drug removal efficiency in an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system operated in a continuous-flow reactor. Additionally, it examined the abundance of active microbial communities, including nitrifiers (amoA gene from ammonia-oxidizing bacteria and archaea) and denitrifiers (napA, narG, nirK, nirS, nosZ genes), as well as the biodiversity of active prokaryotic communities. The concentration level of ACDs determines variations in biomass density, granule integrity, and removal efficiencies of organic matter (OM) and total nitrogen. Both medium and high ACD concentrations negatively impact these physicochemical parameters. The findings revealed that AGS functioning within a continuous system could help remove ACDs, but removal efficiencies depended on the specific drug and concentration applied. At medium and high ACD concentrations a marked reduction in the abundance of active bacterial and archaeal communities, including nitrifiers and denitrifiers, was observed, alongside a decline in microbial diversity and a transformation in community composition. Specific bacterial genera, which are crucial for OM degradation, nitrification and denitrification were identified as particularly sensitive to anticancer drugs. Our findings highlight the need for monitoring and managing anticancer drugs in wastewater systems, as they can substantially alter treatment performance, nitrogen-cycling communities, and bacterial community composition. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The use of activated carbon (AC) for the adsorption of organic pollutants has proven to be an effective technology for treating industrial wastewater. However, existing electrochemical advanced oxidation technologies (E-AOT) employed for the regeneration of activated carbon exhibit certain limitations, including the reabsorption of intermediate substances and the degradation of the carbon structure. In this study, we employed electro-permanganate (E-PM) technology to regenerate phenol-saturated activated carbon fiber (ACF). Unlike the existing E-AOT regeneration system, such as those utilizing electro-peroxydisulfate and electro-persulfate, the Mn(III) and Mn(V) produced in the E-PM system induce the least structural damage on the ACF. In addition, during the E-PM process, the generation of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) at the anode poses a low risk of damage to the cathode structure due to mass transfer limitations. During the E-PM process, Mn(III), Mn(V), Mn(VI), and •OH interact with MnO₂, leading to secondary adsorption of intermediate products, which constitute approximately 4.32 % of the total adsorption. When compared to our previous research (regeneration efficiency of 75.69 %, phenol removal rate of 93.31 %), the efficiency of multiple regenerations using the E-PM system has markedly improved (regeneration efficiency of 91.22 %, phenol removal rate of 94.89 %). These findings indicate that the E-PM system offers a promising regeneration strategy for activated carbon, characterized by a 93.11 % reduction in energy consumption compared to electrochemical regeneration systems, a high regeneration efficiency, preservation of pore structure, and a minimized risk of secondary pollution. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

This study investigated the evolution of water content and carbonation in OPC cement paste under low, intermediate, and high relative humidity (RH) conditions, emphasizing the role of water in accelerated carbonation and microstructural modifications. Under high RH, the carbonation suppressed after 28 days owing to calcium ion accumulation at the surface, precipitating as calcite. This calcite formation leads to a dense calcium carbonate layer, reducing the gas–liquid interfacial area for CO₂ dissolution and blocking further water evaporation and carbonation process. Low RH conditions cause the agglomeration of calcium silicate aluminate hydrate (C–(A)–S–H), increasing empty space in the microstructure. This facilitates CO₂ penetration but limits CH carbonation due to insufficient water availability. These findings highlight the significance of water distribution and microstructural evolution in CO₂ sequestration, revealing that RH critically influences the progress of carbonation by altering the pore structure and subsequent water availability in cementitious materials. © 2025 The Authors

Shallow groundwater is commonly used for daily needs in Indonesia, and the water quality is affected by surrounding land uses with anthropogenic activities. The study aimed to evaluate shallow groundwater quality and public health risks. 51 groundwater samples located <150 m from the river were collected from agriculture, industrial, and domestic areas along the Upper Citarum River, supporting millions of people's activities. Physicochemical, heavy metals and microbiological parameters were measured. Water quality was compared to the government standards, and the statistical correlation and Principal Component Analysis were used to analyze the potential sources. The health risk was estimated using the Hazard Quotient, Hazard Index, and Excess Cancer Risks approach. The results showed that some heavy metals contaminated shallow groundwater were the dominant source of health risk. Pb concentration has statistically inversely correlated with distance from the river. Non-carcinogenic risk of children is higher than that in adults, with the rank of agriculture > industrial > domestic regions, and only suitable for dermal exposure. Meanwhile, the carcinogenic risk is unacceptable for both dermal and oral intakes and risk in agriculture > industrial > domestic areas. Higher distance from the river shows decreasing risk values, and the estimated safe distance from the river follows the sequences of industrial > agriculture > domestic area affected by the hydrogeological condition and flooding prone in industrial areas. These findings underscore the potential impact on public health and the urgency of addressing this issue through pollution source prevention, buffer-safe distance management, and education for the public. © 2025 The Authors

Evaluating particulate matter mass and count concentrations in a vehicle cabin: Insights from Kuwait City

Inhaling quality air is crucial for good health. Therefore, investigating air quality in various microenvironments, especially indoors where people spend most of their time, is essential. This study examines particulate matter (PM) concentrations in a vehicle cabin over one week in September, representing late summertime conditions. It focuses on measuring PM mass and count across various size ranges (0.3–0.5, 0.5–1.0, 1.0–2.5, 2.5–5.0, 5.0–10.0, 10.0–25.0 μm) under different ventilation settings in a private vehicle on one of Kuwait's busiest highways. Thirty-five runs were conducted across five ventilation settings over seven days. These settings included combinations of AC fan speeds, recirculation status, window positions (open and closed), and smoking activities. No significant trends were observed between weekends and weekdays due to minimal traffic differences. However, distinct PM mass and count concentration variations were noted across ventilation settings. Setting 5 (AC at medium fan speed, vent and windows closed, smoking allowed) had the highest PM mass and count concentrations in smaller sizes (diameter ≤2.5 μm) due to active smoking. Setting 1 (AC off, vent and windows open, no smoking) recorded the second-highest PM mass (diameter ≥2.5 μm) and count (diameter ≤2.5 μm) concentrations due to outdoor pollution. PM mass and count concentrations were lowest under settings 2–4, with negligible differences between them, attributed to the relative restriction of air intake. The highest exposure levels were observed in setting 1, where windows were open, and the lowest in settings with closed windows and AC in recirculation mode. Exposure levels at hotspots were up to 200 % higher. Proximity to construction activities further increased exposure. © 2025 The Authors

Reuse of sludge from photo-Fenton process and further application as a catalyst in electrochemical processes for the treatment of landfill leachate

To evaluate the potential of sludge from solar photo-Fenton to be transformed into a catalyst for the heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) process, some parameters were investigated, including (i) the impact of heat treatment on catalytic activity through structural and compositional analysis of the iron species (100, 600 and 750 °C);(ii) analysis of the effect of pH and current density (j) on the decolorization and decarbonization efficiency;and (iii) the generation of high-value organic acids. The calcination of sludge to 600 and 750 °C presents changes in the multiferroic structures but does not enhance its catalytic activity, given the similarity of the treatment results of landfill leachate with the catalyst with and without calcination. The treatment of leachate via heterogeneous EF using sludge dried at 100 °C and under pH 3 achieves better results than the treatment without pH adjustment. At the evaluated j values (30, 60 and 90 mA/cm2), Chemical Oxygen Demand removal efficiencies of 47 %, 48 % and 50 % were respectively found, and Total Organic Carbon abatements of 36 %, 36 % and 42 % were reached. Despite the low effluent mineralization, high value-added products (carboxylic acids) are formed during 240 min of EF, with the possibility of selective electroconversion into acetic and formic acid. Regarding decolorization, a successful result was found with the j of 90 mA/cm2, which achieved almost 90 % color removal. Finally, a final treatment strategy is proposed using the sludge only dried to 100 °C, followed by heterogenous EF with acidification to pH 3 and j of 60 mA/cm2. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Increasing risk of oppressive heatwaves over India in the future warming

The frequency of heatwave events has been increasing with climate change across the globe, causing devastating impacts on human and natural systems. Particularly, the co-occurrence of high temperature with high humidity has the potential of worse impacts on human health than extreme temperature alone. We use observations to examine the characteristics of extreme (high temperature and low humidity) and oppressive (high temperature and high humidity) heatwaves and their impacts on human mortality. We also use climate model simulations to understand the likelihood of heatwaves under varied warming conditions in future climates. We find an increasing trend in the number of days of extreme and oppressive heatwaves, with surprisingly a higher rate of increase in oppressive heatwaves. We also observe a higher correlation between oppressive heatwaves and historical heat-stress-related human deaths than extreme heatwaves, indicating more substantial impacts of oppressive heatwaves on the human population than extreme heatwaves. Further, our results show a five-fold increase in the number of days of oppressive heatwaves under 1.5°warming in both mid (2035-2065) and end (2070- 2100) of the 21st century, relative to the historical period (1975 to 2005) whereas the number of extreme heatwave days remains relatively constant in mid and end of this century. Remarkably, 2°warming results in an eight-fold and almost two-fold increase in the number of days of oppressive heatwaves by the end of the century relative to the historical period and 1.5°warming conditions. These results suggest that limiting the mean global warming to 1.5°can reduce the likelihood of oppressive and extreme heatwaves by 44% and 25% by the end of the century relative to the 2°warming world. Moreover, the remarkable increase in oppressive heatwave days highlights the elevated risk of heatwaves over densely populated countries and indicates an imminent need for adaptation measures. © 2025, CC BY.
