Multi-objective optimization based on surrogate models for sustainable building design: A systematic literature review

Surrogate models can overcome the building performance simulation complexity and replace time-consuming simulation engines within multi-objective optimization studies. Although this approach can leverage the development of sustainable building design, just a few studies integrate these concepts collectively. Therefore, this paper explores simulation studies that combine these techniques through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Specifically, this study illustrates the state-of-the-art literature, main challenges, and opportunities regarding multi-objective optimization based on surrogate models. The three significant contributions resulting from this study are: 1) a list of research gaps with issues partially addressed, 2) a framework for future evaluations, and finally, 3) directions for future research in the field. Based on 54 documents analyzed, there are research areas that demand further attention and present opportunities for significant contributions. For instance, there has been limited exploration of data mining and transfer learning techniques, a lack of optimizations considering uncertainty parameters that could enhance the resilience of the projects, and a deficiency in building decarbonization discussions. Furthermore, developing user-friendly tools or web applications could streamline the replication of the optimization approach, thus promoting more sustainable building design. Simultaneously, ethical standards could support a research environment that is transparent, accountable, and trustworthy. Finally, this SLR consolidates previous scientific achievements, acting as a valuable resource to facilitate the adoption of multi-objective optimization based on surrogate models for future researchers, thereby serving as a functional and reference guide and allowing the design of more sustainable buildings.

More than a billion people globally lack affordable and safe housing, with the majority located in the Global South (GS). In these regions, climate change will persistently impact living conditions, reducing thermal comfort and escalating energy consumption. Within this context, this investigation conducts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the use of building performance simulation (BPS) tools for climate adaptation and mitigation through future weather file predictions. By analyzing 47 documents, the study offers suggestions for policymakers and highlights areas that require further research. From policymakers' perspective, standardized metrics can promote better industry understanding and be key indicators for investment funds support climate-resilient developments. Public policies should mitigate overheating risks by moving beyond one-size-fits-all social housing approaches and implement nationwide tools for robust building design. Moreover, real progress in resilience relies on integrating enhanced building design standards with occupant behavior. From an academic perspective, future research should conduct national-level assessments of diverse urban architectural typologies, incorporating new resilience metrics and combining Global and Regional Climate Models to develop ensemble future weather files. New studies should adopt optimization, machine learning, and transfer learning techniques while effectively exploring trade-off procedures. Additionally, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) are indispensable tools for advancing decarbonization efforts and evaluating technology feasibility in the built environment. Lastly, this SLR synthesizes past scientific achievements and current research gaps, providing an understanding of resilience modeling for climate adaptation and mitigation while offering a practical guide for sustainable residential buildings in the GS.

In this study, we investigated morphological changes including the formation of beach scarp behind the breakwaters based on field surveys and numerical simulations at Aoyama beach in Niigata coasts, Japan. The morphological changes on the land area were analyzed by using digital elevation models (DEMs) constructed by UAV photogrammetry. The changes beneath sea level were analyzed by echo sounders. As a result, the land area showed a trend of erosion with beach scarp, and the beneath the sea water a salient was formed toward the breakwaters, which was consistent with the result of numerical simulation by using XBeach. The numerical analysis implied that the formation mechanism of beach scarp was a result of avalanching on steep slope mainly because of erosion effect amplified by water level rise behind the breakwaters. It can be identified that the formation of beach scarp was caused by high wave event and initial steep slope.

High-resolution land use and land cover change analysis using GEOBIA and landscape metrics: A case of Istanbul, Turkey

Determination of the spatio-temporal distribution of Land use and Land cover (LU/LC) is important to understand the dynamics of urbanization, agricultural abandonment, and industrialization. This study aims to create multi-temporal high-resolution LU/LC maps and analyze thematically extensive LU/LC changes using Geographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) and Landscape Metrics for the selected study region in the Istanbul metropolitan city of Turkey. HR SPOT 6/7 images acquired in 2009, 2013, and 2019 were used as main Earth Observation data to create LU/LC maps. Open-source geospatial data were also integrated into classification to better identify some LU/LC classes to increase total classification accuracy. Overall classification accuracy of 2009, 2013, and 2019 dated LU/LC maps are 87.45%, 88.16%, 90.74% respectively. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation were used to selecting the landscape metrics and evaluate the results. PCA resulted in three principal components and the total variance was found as 87.3%.

Estimation of the addition of fly ash and its environmental impact in the manufacture of cement pastes

The cement industry is one of those that consumes the most energy, due to the high temperatures required to produce this material, and it is also one of the most that generates high CO2 emissions. In this work, the addition of sugarcane ash, bituminous coal and hazardous residues in cement pastes were evaluated. For this, cement pastes were produced in accordance with ASTM C305, from which the test specimens were prepared to analyze compressive strength and parallel to this, metal leaching tests were performed using the SPLP procedure. Following this, the reactivity of the fly ash in the cement pastes was evaluated by means of thermogravimetric tests. The different analyzes were carried out at the ages of 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, 90 and 180 days. The ashes were characterized by XRF, XRD, and laser grain size, where the SiO2 and Al2O3 contents in the cane and bituminous coal ash were relatively high, contrary to what was obtained in the treated and untreated hazardous waste ash. These results are quite innovative because there are few works using HW in the literature. Cements with CAN, BIT, and THW5 were found to show equivalent and even superior compressive strength performance when compared to control. This work can be used as a guide and an inspiration for policymakers who want to apply this kind of material in the cement sector and promote evidence-based decisions and regulations.

Rockfall Hazard Analysis Based on the Concept of Functional Safety with Application to the Highway Network in South Korea

Numerous rockfall incidents involving infrastructure damage and loss of life have been reported along roads in mountainous terrain. Previous studies have used quantitative risk assessment approaches to identify the level of rockfall risk. However, appropriate quantitative indicators that are able to describe time-varying risk have not yet been developed. This study aims to develop a rockfall risk mitigation method based on reliability concepts, to classify rockfall data, to model the probability of rockfall occurrence, and to estimate the magnitude of risk reduction through mitigation measures. A synthetic measure of rockfall risk is proposed, which allows to compare directly and quantitatively the rockfall risk for different cut slopes under unmitigated and mitigated conditions. The proposed methodology can estimate the risk reduction obtained using mitigation measures, such as introducing protections barriers, their periodic maintenance, and horizontal coverage ratio. This methodology was applied to 20 years of rockfall data collected by the Korea Expressway Corporation from 1215 artificial cut slopes along the highway network in South Korea. The rockfall frequency was analyzed based on the inventory data, and a rockfall hazard mitigation strategy was demonstrated using the suggested methodology for the case study. It was shown that appropriate mitigation strategies, based on number of protection barriers, interval of periodic maintenance, and horizontal coverage ratio, can be devised to reduce the risk of different artificial slopes below a target failure probability. The approach shown in this study can provide insights into ways of improving overall risk management to prevent losses by rockfall.

Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Mugla, Turkey

Mugla Province, which has been selected as the study area, is located in the Aegean Extension Region (AER), where seismic motions are widely observed. Moreover, the AER is the most active part of the Eastern Mediterranean Region in terms of seismic activity, and this seismicity has been continuing increasingly. This study aims to determine the seismic hazard of Mugla Province and its surroundings by using the probabilistic seismic hazard method. The earthquake dataset including 19,824 seismic records that were used in the research was obtained from the national and international earthquake catalogs. The data about the active fault zones in the study area were acquired from the General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration. The seismic source zones were generated as homogeneous areas as possible taking into account the active fault zones. The earthquakes in seismic source zones were eliminated based on the time and distance frames. The annual recurrence relationships of the source zones were determined using the least-squares method taking into account the earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 or above. The peak acceleration values on the bedrock were calculated using the attenuation relationships of the selected local and global ground motion prediction models. The calculations were performed using the SEISRISK III software package utilizing the homogeneous Poisson Process Model according to the exceedance probability of 10% for 50 years (corresponding to the return period of 475 years). The peak acceleration values on bedrock were found to range between 0.11 and 0.42. The study revealed that the Gokova fault zone (Zone 4) was the most active source in terms of the seismic hazard in the region and that the seismic hazard of the southwestern part of the region was greater compared to other parts.

The increasing global water consumption, especially due to industrial growth, results in a proportional generation of wastewater that must be treated before reuse or return to nature. Effective solutions are especially needed for treating oily wastewater, a common industrial effluent with serious environmental and public health consequences when discharged untreated. Membrane separation processes have emerged as a promising technology to replace conventional methods for oil-water separation due to their selectivity and environmental benefits. While polymeric membranes currently dominate industrial oily wastewater treatment, challenges such as fouling susceptibility and poor stability against chemicals hinder their long-term sustainability. In response, highly hydrophilic ceramic membranes, especially silicon carbide (SiC), have gained significant attention owing to their remarkable attributes, including high durability, chemical resistance, and mechanical stability. SiC membranes enable the treatment of oil solutions with high concentrations, bypassing the need for additional pretreatment steps. Notably, SiC membrane separation is considered an environmentally friendly method for reducing oil, dissolved organic matter, and salt in the crude oil-water-rich phase, enhancing the industrial viability of oily wastewater separation in various processes, including wastewater treatment plants, petroleum, food, and pharmaceuticals. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in SiC membranes for efficient oily wastewater treatment, encompassing processing methods, membrane properties, and performance evaluation. Moreover, it delves into the challenges and future directions of SiC membranes, including fouling mitigation, cost-effectiveness, and scalability. By shedding light on the untapped potential of SiC membranes, this review aims to contribute to the advancement of sustainable oily wastewater treatment technologies.

This study aimed to develop exposure-response relationships (ERRs) between road, rail, and air traffic noise and high noise annoyance (HNA) and to assess the HNA disease burden. In 2023, 4640 adults were cross-sectionally sampled from the five largest cities in Bulgaria. Participants' road, rail/tram, and air traffic HNA was defined as the top two categories (60% cut-off point) of a 5-point scale. A 72% cut-off approximation was also used. European Noise Directive maps were used to assign day-evening-night equivalent sound levels (Lden) to residences. ERRs were derived and used, together with the new WHO disability weight for HNA, to calculate disabilityadjusted life years (DALYs). DALYs were monetised based on Bulgaria's gross domestic product (GDP) per capita and the value of a life year (VOLY). In fully adjusted models, Lden was non-linearly associated with HNA. Road traffic Lden [range 42.5-77.5 dB] was positively associated with HNA only above 62.5 dB, whereas the upward trend for rail [range 37.5-72.5 dB] and air traffic Lden [range 37.5-57.5 dB] started at 40-45 dB. Using this study's ERRs, the burden among people exposed to >= 40 dB was 3476 (1896-5056) DALYs, $ 39 138 953 (21 348 520-56 929 386) based on GDP, and 243 310 984 (94 796 487-505 581 266) based on VOLY. Using the WHO's curves, the burden was 4312 (2352-6273) DALYs, $ 48 559 330 (26 486 907-70 631 753), and 301 873 648 (117 613 110-627 269 918). In conclusion, we could only derive a plausible ERR for railway noise annoyance. Until better ERRs are derived for the Bulgarian population, we recommend using the WHO curves for road traffic and aircraft noise annoyance.

The P-y Response of Laterally Loaded Flexible Piles in Residual Soil

This paper describes the main features related to lateral displacements with depth after successive lateral loading-unloading cycles applied to the top of reinforced-concrete flexible bored piles embedded in naturally bonded residual soil. The bored piles under study have a cylindrical shape, with 0.40-m in diameter and 8.0-m in length. Both bored piles types (P1 and P2) include an embedded steel pipe section in their center as longitudinal steel reinforcements: pile type P1 has another 16 steel rods as steel reinforcement to concrete while pile type P2 has no further steel reinforcement. Pile type P1 has three times as much stiffness (EI) and four and a half times the plastic moment (M-y) than pile type P2. A similar load-displacement performance was observed at initial loads as for small displacements of both piles. At this initial loading stage, the response of the reinforced concrete piles is a function of the soil characteristics and of a linear elastic pile deformation. During this stage, piles can even be understood as probes for evaluating soil reactions. For larger horizontal displacements, after the concrete section starts undergoing large deformations, approaching the ultimate bending moment, pile behavior and consequently the load-displacement relation starts to diverge for both piles. For pile P1 the values of relevant lateral displacements are extended to about 2.5-m in depth, while for pile P2 lateral displacements are mostly constrained to about 2.0-m in depth. Measurements of horizontal displacements of pile P1 against depth recorded with a slope indicator show that, after unloading, lateral loads at distinct stages (small and near failure loads), exhibits a much higher elastic phase of the system response. An analytical fitting model of soil reaction is proposed based on the measured displacements from slope indicator.
