Spatio-temporal tendencies of urban land surface temperature on the Andean piedmont under climate change: A case study of Metropolitan Lima, Peru (1986-2024)

The increase in land surface temperature (LST) in megacities has contributed to global warming due to poor urban planning and high population concentration. This study analyzes spatiotemporal trend patterns of LST in the city of Metropolitan Lima, Peru, during the summers of 1986-2024. The Mann-Kendall tests and the Theil-Sen Slope method were used to analyze the spatio-temporal trends of LST, relating R-2 and the Mann-Kendall p-value of the annual average LST in each district. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to group districts according to their average yearly LST. Urban heat islands were identified based on basin configuration and distance to the sea at 1 km intervals. The results reveal a significant increase in LST (p < 0.001) related to El Nino-Southern Oscillation phenomena, in addition to urban growth and land cover change. The significant positive trend of LST showed a heterogeneous distribution in all districts. The districts were grouped into three clusters with statistically significant differences in LST (p < 0.001), spatially configured radially from the sea to the foot of the Andes, up to 1179 m a.s.l. Urban heat islands did not correlate with significant positive trends in basins. Still, they showed a considerable increase in LST in areas of high economic activity, including dense commercial, industrial, and residential areas. This information is crucial to managing climate change adaptation and mitigation measures and contributing to sustainable urban planning focused on the population's well-being.

Controlling particulate matter (PM) emissions to the atmosphere in industrial processes is critical for a safe and healthy environment. Because of its high strength and thermal stability, silicon carbide (SiC) is among the best materials for producing hot gas filters to be coupled to sugarcane bagasse-fired boilers in Brazil and India. In this study, we evaluated the performance of asymmetric SiC-based filters of different features for removing fine PM with particle sizes ranging from 90 to 3000 nm. The collection efficiency of the asymmetric filter made of SiC/ mullite support with no pore former, porosity of 31-33 %, and permeability of (0.17-0.30) x 10-11 m2 with a coating thickness of 109-138 mu m, effective pore size of 19-26 mu m, and effective collector diameter of 64-86 mu m was higher than 99 % for PM with size greater than 0.60 mu m. The SiC formulation with mullite and pore former also presented promising performance. The resulting pressure drop remained within the range reported for commercial hot gas filters. Over 99 % of the mass of soot and fly ash particles generated during sugarcane bagasse combustion exceeds the MPPS range found for filters, which was between 0.16 and 0.36 mu m. Therefore, the SiC asymmetric filters presenting mullite in their formulation are anticipated to meet current international emission standards.

A pilot-scale wastewater reclamation system based on direct descending filtration and chlorine disinfection

The development of cost-effective technologies for treating and disinfecting wastewater to a level that makes it economically valuable, environmentally sustainable, and health-safe for reuse is of utmost importance. In this study, a direct descending filtration pilot unit was designed, assembled, and tested within a municipal wastewater treatment plant to produce nonpotable reclaimed wastewater. Bench-scale tests were performed to define the optimum coagulant type and dosage (Poly aluminium chloride, 15 mg L-1). The pilot plant performed best at a filtration rate of 15 m h-1 in a bed of commercial building silica sand with an average particle size of 0.93 mm, resulting in a net production of 0.103 m3 h-1 of treated water. The removal efficiencies for apparent color, E. coli, turbidity and total suspended solids were 86.8 +/- 2.3%, 86.8 +/- 3.6%, 76.9 +/- 6.9% and 68.7%, respectively. After a final stage of chlorine disinfection, the E. coli removal was higher than 99.7%. All the resulting parameters were within the recommended standards for nonpotable uses, such as landscape irrigation, dust and fire control, soil compaction, and street cleaning.

Combining anaerobic digestion slurry and different biochars to develop a biochar-based slow-release NPK fertilizer

In this research, we developed a biochar-based fertilizer using biogas slurry and biochar derived from lignocellulosic agro-residues. Biogas slurry was obtained through the anaerobic digestion of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (fresh vegetable biomass and/or prepared food), while biochars were derived from residues from quinoa, maize, rice, and sugarcane. The biochar-based fertilizers were prepared using an impregnation process, where the biogas slurry was mixed with each of the raw biochars. Subsequently, we characterized the N, P and K concentrations of the obtained biochar-based fertilizers. Additionally, we analyzed their surface properties using SEM/EDS and FTIR and conducted a slow-release test on these biochar-based fertilizers to assess their capability to gradually release nutrients. Lastly, a bioassay using cucumber plants was conducted to determine the N, P, and K bioavailability. Our findings revealed a significant correlation (r > 0.67) between the atomic O/C ratio, H/C ratio, cation exchange capacity, surface area, and the base cations concentration with N, P, and/or K adsorption on biochar. These properties, in turn, were linked to the capability of the biochar-based fertilizer to release nutrients in a controlled manner. The biochar-based fertilizer derived from corn residues showed <15 % release of N, P and K at 24 h. Utilization of these biochar-based fertilizers had a positive impact on the mineral nutrition of cucumber plants, resulting in an average increase of 61 % in N, 32 % in P, and 19 % in K concentrations. Our results underscore the potential of biochar-based fertilizers in controlled nutrient release and enhanced plant nutrition. Integration of biochar and biogas slurry offers a promising and sustainable approach for NPK recovery and fertilizer production in agriculture. Trichoderma strains have several biotic and abiotic functions important for agriculture. However, their efficiency varies depending on different aspects. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of a Trichoderma asperelloides-based inoculant (FT10), to verify its ability to promote soybean growth (Glycine max). The experiments were conducted at field level in four distinct edaphoclimatic zones in Brazil. The statistical design used was in randomized blocks, with six treatments and four replications. The treatments applied were: (1) Control;(2) Positive control (Co-Mo Platinum);(3) Standard product (ICB Nutrisolo Trichoderma);(4, 5 and 6) FT10 Inoculant (2, 5 and 10 g ha-1, respectively). The parameters evaluated were: plant stand, number and mass of nodules, shoot and root biomass, mass of one thousand grains and soybean yield. The doses of 5.0 and 10.0 g ha-1 of FT10 contributed to the increase in germination and final plant stand, as well as to the increase of shoot and root biomass. In this study, 5.0 g ha-1 of FT10 presented the highest number and mass of nodules in relation to the control. The gains in these parameters resulted in higher yields that were statistically different from some control trials, with an increase in grain yield between 8.9 and 15.1% compared to the control. Therefore, Trichoderma asperelloides can be used as a soybean growth promoter, and its application via the sowing furrow of 5.0 g ha-1 of FT10 is the most promising treatment.

Industrial activities generate considerable volumes of wastewater containing organic and inorganic contaminants. Adsorption is an efficient method for wastewater treatment due to its ease of operation, convenience, and efficiency. However, finding suitable adsorbent materials that are abundant, cheap, and efficient remains a challenge. Gelatin is considered a promising adsorbent due to its abundant surface of active groups, water solubility, non-toxicity, and biodegradability. Also, gelatin allows the addition of other compounds in the gel network, overcoming some disadvantages such as low mechanical resistance to temperature and humidity. Here we review the production of gelatin-based composites including beads/spheres, hydrogels, aerogels, and films, and their use to remove toxic metals, dyes, nitrate, phosphate, and oily contaminants from aqueous matrices. Considerations Economic, environmental, and real applications aspects are also discussed.

Here, hybrid stimuli-responsive (exhibiting pyroelectricity and piezoelectricity) porous cryogels are engineered by embedding tourmaline nanoparticles (TNs) in a cellulose nanofiber (CNF) skeleton to generate high-performance CNF-TN-based airborne particulate matter (PM) filters. First, single-layer hybrid cryogels with varying TN contents (0-5% w v(-1)) are assembled, and the design principles for multilayered filters are established based on a novel sequential pre-freezing and freeze-drying technique. As observed, the embedded TNs transformed the CNF network into a more homogeneous, isotropic, and firm structure, thus improving the structural integrity and thermal stability of the assembled cryogels while maintaining their ultrahigh porosity and low density. The TN induced piezoelectric voltage in the cryogels during filtration significantly enhanced the filtration performance. Furthermore, the patterned surface texture of the cryogels notably improved quality factor (Q(f)) and the reusability of the layered filters overall. The explored hybrid cryogels, particularly those exhibiting multilayered configurations, can be deployed for high-performance airborne particulates filtration owing to the synergistic effect of their mechanical robustness, stability, and high filtration efficiency. As far as it is known that, the Q(f) values (>0.04) obtained by the three-layered cryogels are similar to or even higher than those of the reported best aerosol filters.

Elevated temperature performance of cementitious mortars containing pumice, barite, and basalt powder

In this study, mortar samples were produced by substituting pumice, barite, and basalt powder instead of cement at 7.5% and 15% ratios. Produced 90-day samples were exposed to tempera-tures of 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 degrees C. After the effect of high temperature, two different cooling processes were applied: air and water. The unit weight, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and compressive strength of the produced samples were measured before the effect of high temper-ature. Compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and mass loss values were also investigated after high temperature. In addition, TGA, XRD and SEM analyses of selected samples were made. The results showed that basalt-containing samples were less affected by the high-temperature effect among the additive-containing samples. In contrast, barite-containing samples were more affected than the other samples. However, it was observed that the compressive strength loss of the air-cooled samples was higher, while the mass loss was higher in the water-cooled samples. In addition, increases in compressive strength and ultrasonic sound transmission values were observed up to a certain temperature value.

Laboratory evaluation of heavy metal removal from stormwater runoff by pervious concrete pavement containing seashell and oil palm kernel shell

One of the major issues related with impermeable surfaces such as impervious concrete pavement in urban area is the collecting of rain as stormwater runoff, which then moves harmful natural and man-made pollutant into the natural water bodies such as lakes, streams, rivers, etc. This study investigated the effect of pervious concrete containing palm oil kernel shell and seashell on removing dissolved heavy metals contaminants from stormwater runoff. Therefore, mixtures were made, which replaced 6.3-9.5 mm limestone with 25 and 50% of 6.3-9.5 mm and 4.75-6.3 mm of both shells. The specimens were cured in a fog room and void content were tested. Specimens with same void content (23%) are selected to reduce experimental variability from differing void content. Pervious concrete cylinders were loaded in the laboratory with collected stormwater runoff, and concentrations, volumes of influent and effluent evaluated. Ten consecutive storm events of 200 mL in 20 min of rain are simulated to test heavy metal removal performance. The range of heavy metal removal for pervious concrete mixture containing seashell was 37 and 93% which was higher than that of control mixture (39-73%). However, the rate of heavy metal removal for specimens incorporating kernel shell was between 14 and 63% which was lower than that of control mixture. The results showed that the waste materials can be considered as one of the sustainable runoff purification methods, respecting their effective heavy metal removal rate in runoff, as well as the reasonably low cost and consumption when used on the pervious concrete pavement.
