Bibliometric approach to the perspectives and challenges of membrane separation processes to remove emerging contaminants from water

The presence of contaminants in water is concerning due to the potential impacts on human health and the environment, and ingested contaminants cause harm in various ways. The conventional water treatment systems are not efficient to remove these contaminants. Therefore, novel techniques and materials for the removal of contaminants are increasingly being developed. The separation process using modified membranes can remove these micropollutants;therefore, they have attracted significant research attention. Among the materials used for manufacturing of these membranes, composites based on graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide are preferred owing to their promising properties, such as mechanical resistance, thermal and chemical stability, antifouling capacity, water permeability, high thermal and electrical conductivity, high optical transmittance and high surface area. Membrane separation processes (MSP) can be used as secondary or tertiary treatment during the supply of wastewater. However, the efficient and accessible applications of these technologies are challenging. This study aims to demonstrate the main concepts of membrane separation processes and their application in the removal of emerging contaminants. This study reports bibliometric mapping, relevant data on studies using membranes as water treatment processes, and their viability in industrial applications. The main challenges and perspectives of these technologies are discussed in detail as well.

Empirical analysis of a steam explosion in a slag yard based on a field investigation and 3D explosion damage simulation

Many types of explosions often occur in industrial settings, and research is being conducted to identify the causes and establish preventive measures. The aim of this study is to investigate slag yards, where metal residues are cooled in the steel industry, often causing steam explosions. The cause of accidents and explosion simulation analyses were used to investigate the sources of steam explosions in a slag yard. The explosion intensity of 4 kg of TNT was measured for the purpose of predicting the intensity of a steam explosion. This was compared with a simulation of explosion damage that occurred in 2017. These results could not be produced from small-scale experiments, and they indicate that damage resulting from actual explosions poses a potential risk to pipes that cannot be directly observed. We conclude that this damage can lead to a domino accident, and this study provides results for estimating the possibility of future damage. (C) 2020 Institution of Chemical Engineers. Experimental investigation of composite floor system with thin-walled steel trussed beams and partially prefabricated concrete slab

The present investigation addresses the structural behavior of steel and concrete composite floor systems, composed of thin-walled trussed members, usually adopted in the steel frame constructional technology. The floor systems of typical light-weight frame constructions are generally constituted by thin-walled beams (or open web joist), wood-based panels (Oriented Strand Boards - OSB) and self-drilling screws connecting both materials (steel and wood). In some situations, concrete slabs are cast over the OSB panels and no shear connectors are adopted to ensure the composite action between the steel members and the concrete. In this context, one of the objectives of this work aims at presenting three new innovative solutions for shear connectors, composed of thin-walled members and attached to the top chord of the trusses by means of self-drilling screws (4.2 mm diameter). A series of experimental tests were performed in the Structures Laboratory of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE/UFRJ), in order to provide reliable information in terms of shear strength, deformation capacity and mechanisms of collapse associated with eight push-out test specimens, according to recommendations established by Eurocode 4. Also, the performance of the referred connectors was investigated with the help of three full-scale bending tests, which revealed important characteristics regarding the structural behavior of the composite floor systems in terms of bending capacity, flexural stiffness, degree of interaction between the steel trusses and the concrete slabs, as well as strain distribution at mid-section. Demand-driven biogas production from Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactors to balance the power grid

Future energy systems necessitate dispatchable renewable energy to balance electrical grids with high shares of intermittent renewables. Biogas from anaerobic digestion (AD) can generate electricity on-demand. High-rate methanogenic reactors, such as the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB), can react quicker to variations in feeding as compared to traditional AD systems. In this study, experimental trials validated the feasibility of operating the UASB in a demand-driven manner. The UASB was operated with leachate produced from a hydrolysis reactor treating grass silage. The UASB demonstrated a high degree of flexibility in responding to variable feeding regimes. The intra-day biogas production rate could be increased by up to 123% under 4 hours in demand-driven operation, without significant deterioration in performance. A model based on kinetic analysis was developed to help align demand-driven operation with the grid. The findings suggest significant opportunities for UASBs to provide positive and negative balance to the power grid.

This study focuses on developing an electrically heated concrete panel system incorporating carbon fiber (CF) and carbon nanotube (CNT) as electrical media. Properties of 8 different electrically conductive concrete mixtures, such as workability, air content, compressive strength, and electrical resistivity, were experimentally evaluated to find optimum mixture proportions. Subsequently, three laboratory specimens with different geo-metric designs were fabricated using a two-lift concrete placement scheme: a normal concrete (NC) layer at the bottom and a conductive concrete (CC) layer at the top. Conventional ribbed rebars were embedded as electrodes to supply electrical power. The electrical heating performance of the specimens was evaluated based on the temperature rise and thermal strain changes during the imposed heating cycles. The findings demonstrated the potential use of the developed electrical HPS for sustainable winter maintenance, which will contribute to advancing heated pavement technologies and minimize the environmental impact caused by traditional snow removal practices.

Space and form play an important role in the current geometry of recreational space and cognition of sound field. Therefore, there is different objective physical quantity information of sound energy. These concerned sounds are related to urban development and historical and cultural characteristics and will be highly recognizable sounds. It can be seen from the above that in urban recreational streets, through the objective physical characteristics of the street sound field sorted out, the positive evaluation can be predictably given, and the correspondence between the subjective feelings of the people will be explored. If the physical quantity of sound energy discusses the homogeneity of normalization of the soundscape and comprehensive physical quantity information, it is afraid to ignore the characteristics of spatial qualitative and internal variability. The currently research results propose the urban soundscape acoustic environment factors of waterfront recreation spaces, confirm and draw distinctive sound energy distribution maps and sound field perception. The efficiency of radiation shielding is crucial across industries having radioactive activities, from medical facilities to nuclear power stations. Radiation-Shielding Concrete (RSC) emerges as the preferred material for its cost-effectiveness, robust mechanical performance, ease of production, and excellent radiation attenuation properties against ionizing radiations such as gamma rays, Xrays, and neutrons. This comprehensive review delves into the evolution of SCI indexed research on concrete materials for radiation protection, focusing primarily on studies published in the last decade. It meticulously analyze the latest literature to understand how RSC materials enhance radiation attenuation. The review provides valuable insights into the influence of irradiation on both macro- and micro-properties, enriching the knowledge base for material efficiency and effectiveness concerning different types of radiation and shielding requirements. Additionally, this review with a set of recommendations for future research to advance progress in modern construction, encouraging further examination and innovation in the selection of RSC materials.

The so-called "Corona Blue" decline in mental health after the COVID-19 outbreak. This study examines how COVID-19 risk perception affects mental health via urban space usage in Seoul, Korea, and Shanghai, China. It uniquely explores direct PR-MH and OS-MH effects, along with indirect effects mediated by pandemic-driven changes in urban space utilization. Results reveal that visits to urban destinations and open spaces mediate the relationship between perceived risk and MH, with differing significance levels between the two cities. In Seoul, disruptions in daily life negatively affected mental health through decreased interactions with urban destinations and outdoor spaces, with a statistically significant impact on stress through urban destinations. This suggests that maintaining access to and engagement with these spaces is crucial for mental health during crises. Conversely, Shanghai showed indirect effects predominantly through perceptions of safety, which significantly influenced anxiety levels through urban destinations, but did not manifest similarly through interactions with outdoor spaces. Caution in interpretation is necessary for better generation, but the outcomes of this study underscore the importance of considering cultural, historical, and political contexts in understanding the varying impacts of future pandemic policies on mental health.

Viral Transfer and Inactivation through Zooplankton Trophic Interactions

Waterborne viruses are responsible for numerous diseases and are abundant in aquatic systems. Understanding the fate of viruses in natural systems has important implications for human health. This research quantifies the uptake of the bacteriophage T4 and the enteric virus echovirus 11 when exposed to the filter feeders Tetrahymena pyriformis and Daphnia magna, and also examines the potential of viral transfer due to trophic interactions. Experiments co-incubating each species with the viruses over 72-96 h showed up to a 4 log virus removal for T. pyriformis, while direct viral uptake by D. magna was not observed. However, viral uptake by D. magna occurred indirectly by viral transfer from prey to predator, through D. magna feeding on virus-loaded T. pyriformis. This prey-predator interaction resulted in a 1 log additional virus removal compared to removal by T. pyriformis alone. Incomplete viral inactivation by D. magna was observed through recovery of infective viruses from the daphnid tissue. This research furthers our understanding of the impacts of zooplankton filter feeding on viral inactivation and shows the potential for viral transfer through the food chain. The viral-zooplankton interactions observed in these studies indicate that zooplankton may improve water quality through viral uptake or may serve as vectors for infection by accumulating viruses.

Effect of Carbon Nanotubes on Chloride Diffusion, Strength, and Microstructure of Ultra-High Performance Lightweight Concrete

The study delved into the integration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in Ultra-High Performance Lightweight Concrete (UHPLC), exploring aspects such as mechanical properties, microstructure analysis, accelerated chloride penetration, and life service prediction. A dispersed CNT solution (0.025 to 0.075 wt%) was employed, along with a superplasticizer, to ensure high flowability in the UHPC slurry. Experimental findings unveiled that an increased concentration of CNT in CNT1 (0.025%) and CNT2 (0.05%) blends led to a marginal improvement in compressive strength compared to the control mix. Conversely, the CNT3 (0.075%) mixture exhibited a reduction in compressive strength with a rising CNT content as an admixture. SEM analysis depicted that the heightened concentration of CNTs as an admixture induced the formation of nanoscale bridges within the concrete matrix. Ponding test results indicated that, for all samples, the effective chloride transport coefficient remained below the standard limitation of 1.00 * E-12 m2/s, signifying acceptable performance in the ponding test for all samples. The life service prediction outcomes affirmed that, across various environmental scenarios, CNT1 and CNT2 mixtures consistently demonstrated superior performance compared to all other mixtures. © 2024, The Authors.
