Graywater treatment of emerging pollutant linear alkylbenzene sulfonate by adsorption with leather shave waste activated carbon

The purpose of this research is to evaluate the use of leather shave waste activated carbon (ACLW) as an alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS). Batch adsorption tests were carried out (pH effect, isotherms, kinetics). The activated carbon was tested for its life cycle by desorption with solvent and it was further evaluated as real wastewater treatment for bath graywater. Under the optimum pH of 2.5, kinetic studies showed a better correlation with the pseudo-second order model, with an activation energy of 27.5 kJ mol(-1). Equilibrium isotherms correlated better with the double layer model, indicating hemi-micelle formation and performing a high-affinity isotherm. Adsorption was shown to be endothermic (Delta H-0 = + 73.89 kJ mol(-1)), entropy driven (Delta S-0 = + 0.46 kJ mol(-1) K-1), and occurring spontaneously. The use of ethanol solution was effective for the regeneration of the adsorbent. Adsorption was applied in real wastewater, removing contaminants from bath graywater, especially anionic surfactants with up to 95% removal efficiency.

Accurate and precise values of hydrodynamic parameters are needed for groundwater modeling and management. Pumping test in the aquifer is the standard method to estimate the transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and storage coefficient as the key hydrodynamic parameters. Analytical solutions with curve matching and numerical modeling are two methods to estimate these parameters in the aquifer. Graphical analyses are commonly applied to time-drawdown/water table data which are time-consuming and approximate. Graphical type-curve methods as promising tools are used extensively in water resources studies, while applying these methods is still new in pumping test analysis. In the current study, the first effort based on our knowledge, we have reviewed the literature type-curve graphical methods in pumping test analysis. To achieve this goal, we reviewed and compared the journal articles regarding the characteristics and capabilities of the modeling process from 2000 to 2022. We have clustered the reviewed papers into graphical, modeling, and hybrid categories. Then, a comprehensive review of the selected papers was presented to delineate the highlight of every paper. This review could guide researchers in pumping test analysis. Also, we have presented various recommendations for future research to improve the quality of hydrodynamic parameter estimation.

The powerful data mapping capability of computational deep learning methods has been recently explored in academic works to develop strategies for structural health monitoring through appropriate characterization of dynamic responses. In many cases, these studies concern laboratory prototypes and finite element models to validate the proposed methodologies. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate the capability of a deep learning algorithm called Sparse Autoencoder (SAE) specifically focused on detecting structural alterations in real-case studies. The idea is to characterize the dynamic responses via SAE models and, subsequently, to detect the onset of abnormal behavior through the Shewhart T control chart, calculated with SAE extracted features. The anomaly detection approach is exemplified using data from the Z24 bridge, a classical benchmark, and data from the continuous monitoring of the San Vittore bell-tower, Italy. In both cases, the influence of temperature is also evaluated. The proposed approach achieved good performance, detecting structural changes even under temperature variations.

Soil tillage effect on the control of invasive Spartina anglica in a coastal wetland

Spartina anglica, an invasive marsh grass, was designated as a harmful marine organism in 2016 due to its ability to stabilize mudflats and reduce macrobenthic diversity. To control such invasive species, physical, chemical, or biological methods can be applied while chemical methods are prohibited by law due to ecological disruption. However, the preferred methods of soil tillage, cutting, and native plant restoration for managing S. anglica have rarely been analyzed. To compare the methods, we performed 9 treatments with four replicates, comprising control, different frequencies of clipping (once and twice) and tilling (once and twice), and different densities (50 and 100 seedling) of restoration of the native plants Suaeda japonica and Phragmites australis. To evaluate the severity of disturbance, we measured coverage, stem density, average plant height, and above-ground biomass for 2 years. We found P. australis and S. japonica did not successfully establish or survive due to niche differences and the inherent biological features of Spartina. However, physical removal had a stronger effect than interspecific interaction. Two cutting treatments in the early and the late growing season reduced plant height and biomass of S. anglica by 6 and 34%, respectively, compared with the control treatment at the rapid vegetative growth stage in the following year. We also found that two tillage treatments reduced biomass, plant cover, and stem density by 32%, 38%, and 83%, respectively, in the following year. In the study site, managing invasive species such as S. anglica is best achieved by physically destroying the plant using soil tillage while attempting to restore native species had marginal control effects.

Numerous studies have explored the cooling and energy-saving effects of vegetation and reflective materials under extreme heat conditions in urban residential areas. However, few have explored the synergistic effects of vegetation and albedo, particularly in low-rise, high-density residential areas. Therefore, this study selected six typical low-rise, high-density residential areas in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, based on the neighborhood characteristics. This study investigated the cooling effects and energy-saving potential of vegetation and cooling materials through the development of five simulation scenarios. These included original conditions, the application of highly reflective cooling materials, increased vegetation cover, the removal of vegetation cover, and a comprehensive strategy combining cooling materials with enhanced vegetation. These scenarios were analyzed using ENVI-met and DesignBuilder to evaluate their impact on the microclimate and building energy consumption. The results reveal the following: (1) Cooling materials can lower air temperatures by 1.9 degrees C, saving 10.37% in energy consumption during the summer, demonstrating a greater efficiency in reducing air temperature and energy use. (2) Vegetation slightly reduces daytime air temperatures but hampers nighttime cooling in dense low-rise areas, increasing energy demand. Shrubs or grass are preferable to tall trees. (3) Cooling materials had a stronger correlation with energy consumption reduction compared to vegetation. Hence, combining cooling materials with strategically placed vegetation and controlling vegetation size maximized cooling and energy-saving benefits. This study provides valuable insights for urban planners and designers, offering guidance for improving urban microclimates, reducing building energy use, and achieving carbon neutrality goals.

Influence of wet foam incorporation on the pore structure and properties of metakaolin-based porous geopolymers

Lightweight geopolymers are well-suited for construction applications, including thermal and acoustic insulation panels and fire-resistant barriers. Their porous microstructure can be tailored by incorporating gas bubbles into the fresh ceramic mixture. Several factors-such as geopolymer composition, mixing and curing conditions, and the setting behavior of the paste-play a crucial role in bubble retention within the consolidated specimens. This study investigated the processing of porous metakaolin-based geopolymers prepared with the addition of 5, 7.5, and 10 wt.% of a preformed liquid foam stabilized with xanthan gum. The addition of 0.45 wt.% xanthan gum improved foam stability, ensuring uniform pore distribution and minimizing bubble collapse during processing. This approach enabled the fabrication of specimens with low densities (0.87-1.46 g/cm(3)) and high porosity (39.49%-64.78%), significant air permeability, and well-controlled microstructural characteristics, with average pore sizes varying from 99 to 137 mu m. Based on the findings, the geopolymeric binder containing 7.5 wt.% foam demonstrated a balance of strength, low density, reduced water absorption, and engineered porosity, making it a promising candidate for sealing components or thermal insulation materials. The direct foaming method and processing conditions effectively enhanced the properties of porous geopolymers, highlighting their potential for advanced construction applications.

As a village that later developed into an area that resembled a colonial city at that time, Depok Lama had a concept of residential space that was different from the colonial settlements that existed during the Dutch colonial period. In other colonial settlements, the concept of settlement was the result of a design from the Dutch government, in the Depok Lama settlement the concept of residential space was formed from the activities of citizens directed by a will. This method is used to find a detailed picture based on facts about the beginning of the formation of Depok lama settlement through collecting Depok Lama maps, Chastelein's will, and observing city artifacts. The results of this study note that the concept of space that was applied at the beginning of the formation of the Depok Lama settlement was an unplanned concept of sustainability, prioritizing easy access to various main facilities in the Depok Lama settlement, forming a comfortable environment for the residents of Depok Lama in building their lives and improving they socio-economic quality. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Nonlinear vibration analysis of fluid-conveying cantilever graphene platelet reinforced pipe

This paper is motivated by the lack of studies relating to vibration and nonlinear resonance of fluid -conveying cantilever porous GPLR pipes with fractional viscoelastic model resting on nonlinear foundations. A dynamical model of cantilever porous Graphene Platelet Reinforced (GPLR) pipes conveying fluid and resting on nonlinear foundation is proposed, and the vibration, natural frequencies and primary resonant of such system are explored. The pipe body is considered to be composed of GPLR viscoelastic polymeric pipe with porosity in which Halpin -Tsai scheme in conjunction with fractional viscoelastic model is used to govern the construction relation of the nanocomposite pipe. Three different porosity distributions through the pipe thickness are introduced. The harmonic concentrated force is also applied on pipe and excitation frequency is close to the first natural frequency. The governing equation for transverse motion of the pipe is derived by the Hamilton principle and then discretized by the Galerkin procedure. In order to obtain the frequency -response equation, the differential equation is solved with the assumption of small displacement, damping coefficient, and excitation amplitude by the multiple scale method. A parametric sensitivity analysis is carried out to reveal the influence of different parameters, such as nanocomposite pipe properties, fluid velocity and nonlinear viscoelastic foundation coefficients, on the primary resonance and linear natural frequency. Results indicate that the GPLs weight fraction porosity coefficient, fractional derivative order and the retardation time have substantial influences on the dynamic response of the system.

Research has shown that driving-related stress plays a significant role in causing traffic accidents, either directly or indirectly. Motorcyclists often engage in risky driving behaviors due to elevated stress levels. This study investigates the influence of socioeconomic factors on driving stress among motorcyclists. Data were gathered from 50 participants, with heart rate (HR) recorded using the Polar Vantage V2 device. Heart rate variability (HRV) was analyzed in both time and frequency domains using Kubios HRV software. The study employed the Multiple Indicators Multiple Causes (MIMIC) model to explore the associations between socioeconomic factors and driving stress. The results indicate that variables such as age, gender, education level, occupation, income, driving experience, and travel purpose significantly affect stress levels across both HRV domains. These findings highlight the importance of addressing motorcyclist stress through targeted interventions, including educational programs and policy measures that regulate driving duration. Such strategies are particularly vital in developing countries to reduce stress and improve road safety. This research provides a foundation for developing practical solutions aimed at minimizing driving stress and enhancing the well-being of motorcyclists in high-risk environments. center dot A MIMIC model was applied to analyze the relationship between stress variables in the time and frequency domains based on HRV data. center dot The model identified significant causal relationships, emphasizing the pivotal role of socioeconomic factors in influencing motorcyclists' driving stress. center dot The model demonstrated strong statistical performance with key indicators: chisquare = 38.749, GFI = 0.958, CFI = 0.982, AGFI = 0.893, TLI = 0.961, and RMSEA = 0.057, confirming its robustness and reliability.

Exploring the network structure of coupled green-grey infrastructure to enhance urban pluvial flood resilience: A scenario-based approach focusing on 'centralized' and 'decentralized' structures

Urban pluvial floods pose a significant risk to cities, occurring when precipitation exceeds the carrying capacity of the urban drainage network. Coupled green-grey infrastructure has emerged as a sustainable solution for mitigating urban pluvial floods. This study aims to explore best practices in the network configuration of urban drainage systems coupled with low-impact development (LID) to enhance flow distribution and stormwater infiltration. To do so, we focused on two competing key concepts in network analysis: (1) Centralization and (2) Decentralization. We integrated a one-dimensional stormwater model with a rapid flood spreading model to assess the flood mitigation performance of various centralized and decentralized network configurations in the Gangnam region of Seoul, South Korea. To further assess the combined effects of green and grey infrastructure, we compared the performance of each drainage network configuration with and without identical mixed LID practices. Here we show that the centralized drainage network scenario performed best in reducing flood volume by 40.3%, the decentralized drainage network scenario performed best in shortening flood duration by 47.8%, and the LID practices scenario performed best in mitigating peak flooding rates by 4.2%, each as independent scenarios. When all three scenarios were coupled together, flood volume could be reduced by 73.5%, flood duration by 54.7%, and peak flooding rates by 19.8% in the study area. This exploratory study underscores the potential of network analysis in urban flood research, particularly the effectiveness of loosely-connected network topology. Our findings contribute to the development of best practices for coupled green-grey infrastructure, facilitating sustainable stormwater management and urban flood resilience.
