Ultrafine grinding is a key size reduction (1, Peroxy radical and substitutional Ge center) were affected by the mechanical severity inherent to each mill. Peroxy radical was directly associated with the surface abrasion caused by prolonged impact and attrition inherent to planetary milling. This effect was not observed in jet mill products. In turn, the bulk [GeO4/Li]0 center was more sensitive to the high-energy particle–particle collision related to jet milling. The EPR results were discussed in relation to particle size and morphology and X-ray diffraction data. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Diagnosis of pathological manifestations in popular housing of COHAB in Caruaru, Pernambuco: a forensic approach

The construction of Social Interest Housing through housing programs is a crucial government investment aimed at reducing housing deficits and ensuring housing rights for low-income populations. However, despite driving the growth of the construction industry, historically these constructions have faced pathological manifestations. The term "pathology" in this context refers to defects, non-conformities, and failures in constructions. Thus, this study is aimed at examining the pathological manifestations in social interest housing provided by the Popular Housing Company (COHAB-PE), focusing on popular residences built with subsidies targeted at housing programs in Caruaru, in the rural area of Pernambuco. The study, classified as exploratory and documentary following technical procedures, aims to analyze and identify recurring patterns of structural problems in popular housing. This was carried out through the analysis of 36 residences located in Caruaru, all of residential nature. The results underscore the need to investigate such issues, highlighting anomalies mostly related to construction errors, such as the lack of appropriate structural elements and waterproofing in foundations. The proposed technical solutions aim to ensure residents' safety. The lack of compliance with standards and the recurrence of the same problems over time and across different construction companies indicate a systemic failure in construction methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In recent decades, the world has experienced a surge in extreme environmental events, exacerbated by the ongoing impacts of climate change. Substantial research underscores the role of anthropogenic CO2 emissions as the primary driver behind climate change and global warming. Cement production, constituting roughly 7% of global anthropogenic CO2 emissions, stands as a significant contributor to this issue. Consequently, there has been a growing focus on mitigation strategies within the cement industry, particularly emphasizing the utilization of mineral admixtures. An innovative yet underexplored material for partial cement replacement is iron mining waste rock, a by-product of open-pit mining operations used to extract iron ore deposits. Unlike underground mining, open-pit methods generate larger volumes of waste rock, typically stored in substantial geotechnical structures like piles, pits, or dams. This study conducted physical–chemical, mineralogical, and morphological characterizations on iron mine waste rock. Subsequently, four mortar mixtures were formulated, integrating iron mine waste as a partial substitute for cement (up to 30% by mass), and compared against a reference mortar. The performance assessment encompassed evaluations of fresh mortar properties, compressive strength, and elastic modulus. Findings revealed that the waste rock demonstrates limited pozzolanic activity, primarily functioning as a filler, and its inclusion in mortar enhances the workability of the mixes. However, a marginal reduction in compressive strength (up to 15%) was observed in mortar mixtures where 30% of the cement was replaced by waste rock. © The Author(s) 2025.

Structural performance of direct foundations of onshore wind turbine towers considering SSI: A literature review

The exponential increase in the construction of energy generation systems using wind turbines has driven the need for taller towers in search of stronger winds, resulting in challenges for the development of structural solutions. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review on advancements in the modeling and design of direct foundations for wind turbine towers, emphasizing the importance of soil–structure interaction (SSI). The review covers three-dimensional models developed to analyze the impact of SSI, as well as the optimization of designs considering deflections and structural requirements. The main goal of the paper is to provide detailed insights to serve as a starting point for further research on direct foundations for wind turbine towers. Structural model analysis and the use of methods such as Finite Element Analysis (FEA) have revealed significant variations in the effectiveness of foundations, depending on geometry and soil characteristics. The results highlight the importance of considering SSI for an accurate representation of the overall structural response. In the design and enhancement of wind structures, critical factors such as displacements and stresses must be considered when evaluating the interactions between the structure and the soil. Integrating these design considerations into the improvement of foundations is essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of these structures, meeting the growing demands of the industry and promoting sustainability in wind energy generation. Thus, this research makes a significant contribution to the understanding and advancement of engineering practices for wind turbine tower foundations, establishing an important starting point for future investigations. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Partitioning Uncertainty from Climate Change Inputs on Streamflow Projections in the Bicol River Basin, Philippines

Increasing threats to global water resources from climate change emphasize the importance of comprehending its impacts on hydrology for effective water management. This article quantifies climate input uncertainty in streamflow projections for the Libmanan-Pulantuna Watershed (LPW) in the Bicol River Basin, Philippines. Using the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model, we simulated streamflow based on future climate projections (FCPs) from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) greenhouse-gas emission scenarios, utilizing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phases 5 (CMIP5) and 6 (CMIP6) datasets. Four Global Circulation Models (GCMs) and three bias correction techniques (Linear Scaling, Quantile Mapping, and Detrended Quantile Mapping) were applied. Results showed significant differences between the CMIP datasets, with raw CMIP6 better capturing historical climate patterns. Bias correction methods reduced projection biases in precipitation and air temperatures. Projections revealed increasing low flows and decreasing high flows, especially under high-emission scenarios, worsening water shortages during critical periods. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) showed that climate models were a major source of uncertainty in hydrological projections. Combined FCPs and GCMs contributed to 50%-75% of total uncertainty across flow percentiles and future periods (near-future, mid-future, far-future). These findings underscore the importance of careful model selection and effective bias correction for reliable hydrological projections, crucial for water management strategies in areas like the Bicol River Basin, where water resources are essential for communities and ecosystems. © 2025, The Authors. Design optimization of a composite typology based on RC columns and THVS girders to reduce economic cost, emissions, and embodied energy of frame building construction

The construction industry significantly contributes to global energy consumption and emissions, necessitating sustainable alternatives to conventional practices. In this context, this study introduces a novel composite structural typology that combines reinforced concrete (RC) columns with transversely hybrid variable section (THVS) steel girders as beam-type elements. The proposed building frame leverages the high horizontal stiffness of RC columns and the reduced weight of steel girders to lower material consumption. The THVS variant has proven to be one of the most sustainable steel I-girder configurations. Two arrangements are analyzed: one with fixed beam-column connections and another with pinned joints. Structural design optimization problems are formulated, targeting three objectives: economic cost, CO2(e) emissions, and embodied energy. These indicators are evaluated using a "cradle-to-site" approach. Results demonstrate that the fixed connection typology is optimal for buildings with shorter spans (4 m), achieving reductions in economic cost (6 %), emissions (16 %), and embodied energy (11 %) compared to traditional RC structures. The pinned variant is more suitable for longer span buildings (8 m), resulting in economic gains of around 5 % and a 6 % reduction in emissions despite higher energy requirements. Optimal THVS configurations indeed employ higher-grade steels in flanges than in the web, with tapered geometries varying by span length and connection type. The study also highlights that the THVS girders’ lighter weight significantly lowers axial loads on columns and foundations, further reducing construction costs and environmental impacts of the structural assembly. These findings underscore the potential of composite designs to enhance sustainability in building construction. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

The fate of antibiotics during phosphate recovery processes - A critical review

The principles of circular economy encourage the recovery of phosphorus from nutrient-rich waste streams such as animal manure, domestic wastewater, and urine to supplement existing sources of raw phosphorus. However, these waste streams also contain a wide variety of contaminants of emerging concern including antibiotics, and the recovery of phosphorus from these waste streams results in the co-occurrence of antibiotics with the recovered phosphorus products. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the fate of environmentally relevant antibiotics in three major existing and upcoming phosphorus recovery processes: precipitation-, membrane-, and adsorption-based treatment. In general, the co-occurrence of antibiotics in recovered phosphorus increases with the presence of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and cations due to π-π interaction and cationic bridge formation, respectively. Additionally, antibiotics display pH-based speciation resulting in electrostatic interactions with recovered phosphorus at pH > 7.0. Furthermore, this critical review establishes a new metric, the relative antibiotic-to‑phosphorus (RAP), defined as the ratio of the concentration of antibiotics to phosphorus in recovered phosphorus to that of the phosphorus-rich waste. Precipitation-based methods, particularly struvite, demonstrated the lowest RAP, while the RAP in carbon-based adsorbents was 1.8 × 108 times higher than in membrane-based processes. In reviewing literature on the fate of antibiotics in phosphorus recovery processes, several research needs are also highlighted: the fate of non-tetracycline antibiotics, simultaneous investigation of phosphorus and antibiotic fate in membrane- and adsorption-based methods, treatment methods to mitigate the co-occurrence of antibiotics in recovered phosphorus product, and the release of antibiotics from recovered phosphate products. © 2024

Operational strategies have been applied in constructed wetlands to optimize the removal of nutrients and hormones that are still a concern in wastewater treatment. The strategy of intensifying intermittent aeration was investigated in two microcosm-scale vertical-flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) planted with Eichhornia crassipes onto autoclaved aerated concrete (AC) in the removal of nutrients, estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). CW-1 (2.4 LO2 min−1) and CW-2 (1.4 LO2 min−1) were fed with synthetic wastewater in sequencing-batch mode (cycles 48-48-72 h) and intermittently aerated for 1 h, followed by 7 h without aeration for 377 days. Combined with the intensification strategy, the use of planted free-floating macrophytes and concrete-based material (emergent) as filtering media stand out as the innovation and originality aspects of this study. Despite the hormone addition, intensifying aeration enhanced the efficiencies since CW-1 achieved the highest removals with 91% COD, 77% TN, 74% TAN, 60% nitrate, and 97% TP in Stage I (no hormone addition) and 90% COD, 80% TN, 93% TAN, 63% nitrate, and 82% TP in Stage II (with hormone addition). CW-1 achieved the highest removal efficiencies of E1 (84%), E2 (95%), and EE2 (73%). Conversely, the efficiencies decreased under the lower aeration rate (in CW-2) for all parameters. Macrophyte uptake and adsorption stood out for TN (>60.25%) and TP (>27.6%) removal as the main mechanisms in the VFCWs. The characteristics of AC favored ion exchange and precipitation, reinforcing the potential of this material as filtering media in VFCWs. Intensification of intermittent aeration combined with hormone addition diverse and riched the microbial community with the presence of Thauera, Lentimicrobium (denitrification), Candidatus Accumulibacter (phosphorus removal), Pseudomonas, Fusibacter, and Azoarcus (EE2 degradation). In Central Vietnam, the aggregate typically originates from highly acidic rocks containing a significant amount of silicon dioxide (SiO2), leading to poor adhesion quality with virgin asphalt binder. Hence, the asphalt mixture production usually needs to utilize adhesion promoters. Based on the chemical compositions of the sample aggregate (up to 72.3% SiO2), research has been conducted to introduce an adhesive agent called rubber modified compound (RMC-160), which is composed of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) with petroleum hydrocarbon resin, treated clay and mineral oil. This article presents the research findings regarding the adhesion effectiveness of RMC-160-modified asphalt binder to high acid-based aggregate through laboratory and field tests, along with the mixture performance under both short-term oven aging (STOA) and long-term oven aging (LTOA). The test results exhibited remarkable effects, whereby the asphalt binder modified with RMC-160 additive significantly increased the adhesion level from Grade 2 to Grade 4, and the asphalt mixtures containing RMC-160 had lower rutting and higher cracking tolerance (CTIndex) under both the STOA and LTOA conditions. © 2025 American Society of civil Engineers.

Two classifiers implemented as Data Mining Providers are considered. These providers runs as a stand-alone servers or aggregated with Microsoft(R) SQL Server. One of these classifiers is the Microsoft(R) Decision Trees algorithm. The other is the Simple Naive Bayes incremental classifier, that supports continuous input attributes, multiple discrete predictable attributes and incremental updating of the training data set. The performance study carried out to verify the scalability of the classifiers includes factors of cardinality (number of training cases), number of input attributes, number of states of the input attributes and number of predictable attributes.
