Previous studies reported that the strength reduction in fly ash concrete (FAC) can be improved by internal curing with roof-tile waste aggregate (RWA). However, how much the internal curing by RWA improved the compressive strength of FAC was different, and there was no clear explanation on it. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effect of the internal curing in the FAC by examining the range of the internal curing effect with RWA in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) around coarse aggregate. Paste and concrete specimens in which part of cement was replaced with fly ash were prepared. For paste specimens, one aggregate particle was placed in the center of the specimen. Vickers hardness around the aggregate in the paste specimen and the compressive strength of the concrete specimen were investigated. As a result, the range of Vickers hardness improvement around RWA changed depending on the replacement ratio of fly ash. This indicates that the internal curing effect differs depending on the mixture proportion of paste matrix such as the replacement ratio of fly ash. Furthermore, it was observed that the compressive strength of concrete increased as the thickness of ITZ around RWA decreased. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

From 2018 to 2022, on average, 70% of the Brazilian effective electric generation was produced by hydropower, 10% by wind power, and 20% by thermal power plants. Over the last five years, Brazil suffered from a series of severe droughts. As a result, hydropower generation was reduced, but demand growth was also declined as results of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recession. From 2012 to 2022, the Brazilian reservoir system operated with, on average, only 40% of the active storage, but storage recovered to normal levels in the first three months of 2022. Despite large capacity of storage reservoirs, high volatility of the marginal cost of energy was observed in recent years. In this paper, we used two optimization models, NEWAVE and HIDROTERM for our study. These two models were previously developed for mid-range planning of the operation of the Brazilian interconnected power system. We used these two models to optimize the operation and compared the results with observed operational records for the period of 2018-2022. NEWAVE is a stochastic dual dynamic programming model which aggregates the system into four subsystems and 12 equivalent reservoirs. HIDROTERM is a nonlinear programming model that considers each of the 167 individual hydropower plants of the system. The main purposes of the comparison are to assess cooperation opportunities with the use of both models and better understand the impacts of increasing uncertainties, seasonality of inflows and winds, demand forecasts, decisions about storage in reservoirs, and thermal production on energy prices. © World Environmental and Water Resources Congress *** rights reserved

During COVID-19 pandemic several countries have implemented quarantines in response to the virus’ spread, which was considered an emergency. Thailand was under a state of emergency from January to December 2020, which has had an impact on the state of environment. Based on real-time data from the Pollution Control Department, the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on PM2.5 pollution in Thailand was examined. Inverse Distance Weighted interpolation was used to generate a more accurate visual representation of the PM2.5 pollution through a spatial distribution of atmospheric pollutants across the provinces of Thailand. PM2.5 levels in all considered areas reduced considerably between 2017 and 2020, with the most significant decrease occurring during the lockdown period of April-July in 2020. As the pre-COVID-19 period occurred during late winter in Thailand, the monthly average PM2.5 concentrations in all selected provinces were gradually increased from December 2019 to March 2020. During the lockdown period, the concentration of PM2.5 was reduced in Pathum Thani (48.9%), Samut Sakhon (35.6%) Samut Prakarn (33.6%), and Bangkok (31.7%) The spatial–temporal distribution of the PM2.5 levels in Samut Sakhon and Samut Prakarn provinces were analyzed for October 2020, during the new normal period. The results showed a significant decrease in concentration of up to 31% compared to previous years where industrial operations were situated. This study showed that the government enforced lockdown during COVID-19 pandemic was beneficial in understanding the impact of reduced human activities on anthropogenic air pollutants’ concentrations. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Indonesia’s high Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and İnfant Mortality Rate (IMR) are major health concerns. In Indonesia’s 2020, MMR was 199/100,000 live births, exceeding the 2015–2030 global target of 70/100,000. Geographic Information Systems (GISs) maternal and infant health are useful in mapping and evaluating pregnant women’s locations to determine health facility access. This study aimed to describe the use of GIS to map pregnant women, risky pregnant women, and the distance to the nearest health facility in a remote rural Indonesian area. The study used descriptive quantitative surveying. This study focused on rural pregnant women in Bulukumba, South Sulawesi. The sampling method used the total population. This study uses ArcGIS to find coordinates points using latitude and longitude points. Descriptive analysis to be used maps pregnant women’s risk of accessing health facilities. Results this research, using GIS to map pregnant women, especially high-risk ones, to shelters and health facilities found 47.7% have a risk of pregnancy, 34.9% get to the hospital in 50–60 min, and 1.1% above 60 min. GIS mapping in rural pregnant women can monitor high-risk pregnancies, but it must be enhanced continuously. GIS in health, especially for mothers and children, can help the government present health equality policies by estimating distance and time to access health facilities, especially in specific geographic locations, with decreased MMR and improving maternal and child health. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Exploration of the effects of different S/N ratios on the accumulation of NO2-N in the autotrophic denitrification process is crucial due to no need for an external organic carbon supply. Herein, thiosulfate-driven autotrophic denitrification (SADN) was established in a sequencing batch reactor treating nitrate-containing wastewater. The long-term and batch tests observed that when sufficient thiosulfate was present, the branched thiosulfate oxidation (BTO) reaction occured. Therefore, the sulfur-to-nitrogen (S/N) molar ratio had to be maintained over 2.19 to provide enough electron donors for complete denitrification with SNaRR of 13.13 mg NO3-N/g ***. If the S/N molar ratio declined to 1.75, some nitrite accumulation would utilize the stored elemental sulfur. SNiRR increased from 0.4 – 20.1 mg NO2-N/g *** when the S/N ratio rose from 1.46 to 4.38. Under a sufficient S/N ratio, the change in nitrogen concentration followed a zero order reaction. The microbial analysis identified Desulfobacterota as key microbes, with autotrophic denitrifying bacteria accounting for more than 70%. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Nowadays, in order to decrease environmental impacts such as exhaustion of natural resources and CO2 discharge, the partial replacement of cement by fly ash and coarse aggregate by crushed fine aggregate in concrete have been attracted many researchers. This study concentrated on an experimental examination of the mechanical properties of fine-grained concrete using fine-red sand placement for crushed sand. Experimental tests were performed to investigate compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength. The results reveal that the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength increased with curing time for all mixtures. The increase in the amount of fine-red sand replacement caused a decrease in all mixtures. It was also found that there is a strong correlation between compressive and splitting tensile strength with a high coefficient of determination. Besides, the results of compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength satisfied the requirement of concrete used for pavement. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The stock market is one of the investment options that offer the best potential returns. However, investors are aware of the risk associated with their investments, which is why stock portfolios are established to diversify investments or distribute investments. Managing a portfolio may be challenging because there are so many different stocks. One of the challenges is deciding how much money to invest and how to allocate it for the best results. This paper used the K-means Algorithm for cluster analysis in identifying Decision Making Unit (DMU), the stocks will be grouped according to their characteristics considering their risk and return. Asset allocation per clustered portfolio was performed and the Mean-Variance Model was used to optimize clustered portfolios. This paper aims to use Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to evaluate the efficiency of these clustered portfolios/DMUs. In addition, this paper introduces subjective choice in decision-making using the criterion's level of importance to help investors decide which among these efficient DMUs is a better option. The results show 4 Efficient DMUs for 2019 Data, and 3 Efficient DMUs in 2020 Data. All simulations were carried out using the MATLAB environment platform. © 2023 IEEE.

The milling of asphalt pavements has been extensively applied as a restoration technique, however, a large quantity of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) waste is generated during this process. Numerous applications have been developed for the reutilization RAP, yet, these approaches are still not based on a rational criterion methodology for cemented soils, especially for fiber-reinforced ones. The goal of this research was to analyze the effect of fiber reinforcement on the mechanical behavior of reclaimed asphalt pavement–powdered rock–Portland cement mixtures, while proposing a rational dosage methodology through the porosity/cement content index (η/Civ). Resilient modulus, split tensile strength, and durability tests were conducted in non-reinforced and fiber-reinforced mixtures. Results have shown that non-reinforced mixtures depicted higher resilient modulus, split tensile strength, and durability when compared to fiber-reinforced ones, implying that fiber addition only hindered the mechanical properties of the specimens. This was associated with the length and diameter of the fiber along with the grain size and particle shape of the reclaimed asphalt pavement. Finally, the η/Civ index was shown to be an appropriate dosage methodology to predict the mechanical behavior of both non-reinforced and fiber-reinforced mixtures. © 2022

Materials optimization is an aspect of continuous endeavor for civil engineering in many applications, especially in construction where the materials’ durability and mechanical performance are crucial for structural integrity. Structures such as aerogenerators, both towers and foundations, are highly exposed to cyclic loads with a broad range of frequencies and levels. The improvement of the stiffness behavior can significantly enhance their fatigue resistance and consequently durability. This paper aims to evaluate the impact of a high-performance binder optimization, using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to improve the mechanical behavior of mortars and concretes, by improving stiffness response under cyclic loadings, which is related to durability and fatigue life-service. Static tests (axial compressive and splitting tensile strengths) were conducted as well as cyclic stiffness tests that were proposed as a new methodology for these kinds of materials, which may better relate the mechanical behavior in field applications. The proposition consists of complex modulus tests, under sinusoidal loading, either in pure compression and pure tension, adopting low (0.1–1 Hz) and mid-range (1–25 Hz) loading frequencies. The results show that the optimized binder resulted in a superior material with up to 23% stiffer loading response and 13.8% more energy storage elastically, with also inferences on improved durability, which is expected to delay pathological manifestations, and extended fatigue-life. The proposed testing protocol obtained results compatible with the literature and seems applicable for evaluating the dynamic behavior of cementitious materials. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
