The high level of erosion that occur in Musi river basin has improved a tremendous impact on sedimentation in downstream areas and has resulted in many infrastructure of water is disturbed, such as silting of irrigation channels, siltation of rivers which disrupt the flow of transport stream and increasing the risk of flooding, high sedimentation in the port basin, low quality of water and the rising costs of water treatment. This study utilizes techniques terrain models Digital (Digital Elevation Model/DEM) to analysis the spatial distribution of the potential for erosion and sources of sedimentation, as well as the direction of the flow of sediment into channels as well as its relationship with outlet in branching river as the supplies to be sediment to the river flow. The method used in this study using a spatial model analysis with the help of GIS in analysing and presenting the level of erosion and deposition by utilizing modelling slope and kinetic energy of rainfall to estimate the index erosivity and distribution pattern of sediment into the river channel. This research was conducted at the upper Lematang river sub basin with area 412,638 Ha, which are classified into 11 sub-chatments with the highest altitude is 3.159 m above sea level (Dempo Valley) and the lowest is 126 m above sea level (Talang tinggi Valley). Analytical results have been tested by taking a fine sediment sampling in each sub-watershed in the analysis and is taken along the channel network and compare the observed patterns with the results predicted by the model analysis of soil erosion. Overall, erosion by high intensity tends to occur in the relationship between the different vegetation coverage, the barren land and open land used for farms and land used for mining. Approximately 45-65.5% slope bad condition because the vegetation has been open, so it can be seen the amount of erosion in the area is 2.139 ton/ha/year, at the sloping is 1.8239 ton/ha/year. © 2019 Published under licence

Relative importance of pathologies in the severity of facade degradation

The facade is the main protective barrier against the atmospheric agents acting in a building. Many times, as a result of these agents, the facade manifests pathologies that lead to the loss of performance of the external wall claddings. This article aims to establish and score the importance of the pathologies involved in the cement mortars rendering. The probable causes and the influence on the performance decrease over time are analyzed. The methodology is based on the survey and mapping of the pathologies observed in field survey, correlating these pathologies with probable causes and implications for the system performance. Among the active pathologies, cracks had both a higher intensity of occurrence and a greater gravity compared to the others. Some pathologies, such as detachment and efflorescence, although of great importance in the degradation, are little observed in the studied buildings. As a result, is presented a scale of importance of pathologies, which has great application for the development of facade degradation models. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

GIS-Based Methodology for Crash Prediction on Single-Lane Rural Highways

Due to the need to update the current guidelines for highway design to focus on safety, this study sought to build an accident prediction model using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for single-lane rural highways, with a minimum of statistically significant variables, adequate to the Brazilian reality, and improve accident prediction for places with similar characteristics. A database was created to associate the accident records with the geometric parameters of the highway and to fill in the gaps left by the absence of geometric highway plans through geometric reconstitution or semi-automatic extraction of highways using satellite images. The Generalized Estimating Equation (GEE) method was applied to estimate the coefficients of the model, assuming negative distribution of the binomial error for the count of observed accidents. The accident frequency and annual average daily traffic (AADT) were analyzed, along with the spatial and geometric characteristics of 215 km of federal single-lane rural highways between 2007 and 2016. The GEE procedure was applied to two models having three variations of distinct homogeneous segmentation, two based on segments and one based on the kernel density estimator. To assess the effect of constant traffic, two more variations of the models using AADT as an offset variable were considered. The predominant correlation structure in the models was the exchangeable. The principal contributing factors for the occurrence of collisions were the radius of the horizontal curve, the grade, segment length, and the AADT. The study produced clear indicators for the design parameters of roadways that influence the safety performance of rural highways.

Energy pile is an innovative technology which combined foundation pile with heat pumps. Through this integration, foundation pile can then serve as cooling and heating system, in summer and winter, respectively. During energy pile operation, the pile is subjected to heating and cooling cycles. The thermal cycles induce thermal-induced settlement, and predicting this settlement is a major challenge. As the thermal loading of energy pile is cyclic in nature, constitutive model capable of modelling cyclic hysteresis is necessary. In this paper, a model energy pile embedded in saturated sand and subjected to 5 thermal cycles are back-analyzed using hardening soil with small strain stiffness model. To highlight the importance of modelling cyclic hysteresis, two constitutive models which cannot model the cyclic hysteresis, i.e. hardening soil model and Mohr Coulomb model are used to back analyse the same test. Results show that hardening soil with small strain stiffness model can model the test reasonably well, while hardening soil and Mohr coulomb model severely underestimate the thermal-induced settlement. This paper aims selects sensitive features for damage identification in a railway bridge. For this purpose, a damage identification methodology based on a genetic algorithm and its application to the numerical model of a railway bridge is proposed. The identification method is based on an iterative process that in each iteration compares the values of the dynamic responses of a bridge for a test damage scenario with the response values for a reference damage scenario. The introduction of damage in the test numerical model is based on the modification of preselected numerical parameters values. The genetic algorithm allows the identification of damage by minimizing the residue of an objective function constructed from the responses of the test and reference model, and based on damage indicators. In this study damage indicators, based on the deck accelerations of the bridge subject to the action of the Alfa Pendular train defined as a set of moving loads, are defined and tested. The proposed methodology for identifying damage has been tested using a two-dimensional numerical finite element model of a railway bridge including the railway track. The results enabled the evaluation of the efficiency and reliability of the methodology and of the damage indicators which, in most situations, showed potential for the detection, location and quantification of the severity of the damage. © civil-Comp Press, 2016.

Vibrocompaction is one of the suitable methods to improve liquefiable sand layer. Due to the relatively young age of this technology in Asia, not many engineers are familiar with vibrocompaction design techniques. This paper aims to provide design guidelines for practicing engineers on vibrocompaction. The paper covers the vibrocompaction working principles, its different types, its applicability to soil types, as well as its design and execution methods. Two case studies are presented. The first case study was the application of vibroflotation to compact reclaimed sand up to 17 m thick in Batam, an island nearby Singapore. The reclamation process caused the upper 3 m of sand above the seawater level reached dense condition inducing difficulty for the vibroflot to penetrate and densifying the loose sand below it. The solution to overcome this difficulty is discussed in this paper. The second case study was the densification of 12m thick loose silty fine sand in East Borneo to prevent differential settlement of a 44 m diameter oil tank to be constructed on the site. On this site, a problem was encountered during backfilling, the backfill material could not flow out of the probe. The solution to this problem, and other problems encountered during execution of the project are presented. Conclusions and recommendations drawn from the case studies are presented. Extensive work has been performed to address the technological and design issues of tubular joints in the last decades. Several international design codes and recommendations explicitly cover the design of tubular joints such as Eurocode 3, ISO14346 and NBR16239. Experimental results on the influence of the chord stresses over the brace load capacity have been published in the literature. These results showed that compressive chord stresses considerably reduce the joint resistance. However, very few studies indicated the same reduction in load carrying capacity for joints under the action of chord tensile forces. To investigate this influence, an experimental program comprising thirteen tests was carried out, i.e. tests without chord axial forces;tests with compressive chord forces;and other ones with tensile chord forces. The obtained results were compared to the design provisions. This assessment indicated that the results obtained for chords without axial forces and with compressive forces, in experiments were safe when compared to the values predicted by all the investigated standards. On the other hand, the results associated with cases with chord tension forces proved to be conservative. Copyright © 2018 by The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction.

Purnama Beach is located along the village of Gelumpang Sukawati Village as the part of Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency. The majority of the population of Sukawati Village are Hindus who have many religious events especially related to the beach. The most frequently held ceremony at Purnama Beach is Tawur Agung Kesanga or Melasti ceremony, where Purnama Beach is used as the destination for a Melasti ceremony held by several areas around Sukawati District. The purpose of this study is (1) to identify the typology of spatial utilization in Purnama Beach area, (2) to formulate the various interests (actors) involved in Purnama Beach area, (3) to formulate the various functional changes that occur in the utilization of Purnama Beach area, (4) to identify the territories or zoning in Er Jeruk Temple, and (5) to formulate the various impacts that occur due to changes in the function of Purnama Beach area. So that this study can provide recommendations to mediate dualism conflicts in the use of sacred areas in Bali. Pedestrian path is an important element for outdoor activities in urban environment, as well as in campus area. Yogyakarta State University (YSU) is a campus which is still in progress to develop its physical environment, includes pedestrian areas. The research aims to study student's perceptions in using pedestrian path in campus area, especially in comfort aspects (direct route, line safety, and line clarity). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by giving questionnaires using google form application to students. As a result, it is concluded three comfort indicators of student's perception on their campus pedestrian. First, the degree of achievement for experience indicators is 70.61%;it means that the experience indicators giving a good influence on the perceptions of YSU students. Second, the indicator of attraction is 80.85%, shows a very good influence on the perception of the students. Meanwhile, indicator of expectation is 76.86%, it means that the expectation indicator giving a pretty good influence on the perception of YSU students on the comfort of pedestrian. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Ammonia and urea contained in fertilizer plant wastewater are pollutants to the environment. High concentration of ammonium and urea in wastewater can affects algae blooms in ecosystem which will generate various diseases in aquatic biota. It is known that there are many methods for degradation of ammonium and urea contained in fertilizer plant wastewater. One of potential method is ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation. Ozonation is oxidation with O3 that generates hydroxyl radicals which subsequently react with organic contaminants, while UV irradiation can break down O3 molecules and produce radical ions OH. The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of the utilization of the ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation method in degradation of various initial ammonium (100-300 ppm) and urea concentration (100-300 ppm) in inlet feed of ozonation-UV irradiation combination system. Some important variables such as contact time (0-120 minutes) and ozone feed rate of 0.2, 0.6, and 1.21 g/h were evaluated. Degradation process was carried out in two steps;ozonation and UV irradiation. Ozonation process was carried out in a contacting tank at constant feed flow rate of 1.5 l/min and at room temperature, while UV irradiation process was conducted in pipeline equipped with UV lamp at various contact time. The ultraviolet-enhanced ozonation could degraded ammonium and urea nitrogen up to 83.6% and 63.8%, respectively, at ozone feed rate 1,21 g/h, contacting time 60 and 120 min, initial feed concentration of ammonia (100 ppm) and urea (40 ppm). © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
