Understanding soil shrinkage and retaining water is essential for learning more about the possibility of cracking of liner. Moreover, the factors that influence it are also important to know to improve the material tested as hazardous waste liners. The vapour equilibrium technique is widely used to control suction of compacted soils experiencing drying-wetting phenomena. It is considered to be inexpensive, simple, and has the ability to adequately control the suction applied to soil samples. This paper, therefore, describes its application in studying the shrinkage and water retention in compacted claystone-bentonite mixtures. This involved using five saturated salt solutions including potassium sulphate (K2SO4), potassium chloride (KCl), sodium chloride (NaCl), potassium carbonate (K2CO3), and magnesium chloride (MgCl2.6H2O). The sample was allowed to be in equilibrium with the relative humidity salt solution and a calliper was used to measure the dimensions every day up to when this was achieved. The results showed the bentonite in the mixture affects the amount of shrinkage and water retention while the sample's initial moisture content was also found to be very influential on the magnitude of the primary and residual shrinkage. Moreover, the sample's ability to hold water was almost the same without differentiating the initial water content at a total suction of more than 41084.91 kPa.

The framework of the peanut shelling machine functions as a supporting structure for the components of the peanut shelling machine, namely the top funnel, funnel retaining frame, the lid on the peeler shaft, pulley, sieve shaft, sieve, engine body. Frame material is mild steel equal leg angles size 45 x 45 x 5, yield strength is 3,002E + 04 psi and tensile strength is 5.004E + 04 psi. Skeletal strength analysis was carried out using the autodesk inventor professional 2015 software. The engine frame was given axial loading of 500 N, 600 N, 700 N, 800 N, 900 N, and 1000 N. The analysis results of the maximum stress occur at 1000 N loading, amount to 16.85 Mpy, and the maximum deformation occurs at 1000 N loading, amounting to 0.07727 mm. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Pagar Alam city is one of districts in South Sumatera province that has an area of ± 63,366 hectares (Monograph of the city of Pagaralam, 2013). So far, the people of Pagar Alam city, especially the north Pagar Alam district, have no reference to determine the soil type of its area; therefore this study carried out an analysis of the soil characteristics and conducted a mapping of its types of characteristics and the soil water content in the north Pagar Alam district.A geomap is a map that depicts existing image of the earth's surface which is represented on a flat surface in a certain projection. Geomapping is a process of measuring, calculating and depicting the earth's surface using certain methods. Soil is the surface layer of the earth that comes from parent material that has undergone an advanced process, due to natural changes under the influence of water, air, and various kinds of organisms, both living and dead (Dokuchaev 1870).After conducting 20 soil sample tests, it can be seen from the interpolated and overlayed sub-district map that the land in North Pagar Alam district has sandy silt soil where 19.69 km2 of the area has good grades of the soil and the other23.90 km2 of the area consists of poorly graded sand.

Analysis of multimedia filter effectiveness to improve the quality of rainwater runoff in fulfilling urban raw water supply

Rainwater is recommended as a clean water supply through several water treatment methods. Based on preliminary data test results, several parameters exceed the sanitary hygiene water standard. This research aimed to improve the quality of rainwater runoff using the multimedia filter, which combined filtering and physical adsorption process. The combination of silica sand, activated carbon, and zeolite media was simulated into a pilot-scale of 1:2 reactor. Based on the first experimental results, the use of proposed media has a significant effect (p-value≅0) on several parameters. The best improvement in effluent quality reaches 100% in nitrites removal, 29% in nitrates removal, and 94.4% in total coliform removal. However, the media thickness variation factor has an insignificant effect (p-value 0.616) to effluent quality. Based on the second experiment results, hydraulic loading rate (HLR) variation shown a significant effect (p-value 0.01) on several parameters. Effluent quality improvement reaches 71.4% in nitrites removal, 100% in nitrates removal, and 91.9% in total coliform removal. However, variation in HLR gave an insignificant effect (p-value 0.769) on improving effluent quality.

Adaptation to the concept of sustainability is a problem in developing countries, especially in terms of the level of knowledge, economic capability, environmental conditions, and regional policies. These four aspects become exogenous variables in this study to examine the role of green building concepts in sustainable concepts in building construction. Qualitative and quantitative methods become a way to prove the hypothesis of this study by using SEM-PLS as an analysis tool. The sample in this study limits the building developers and owners to assess aspects that affect the sustainability of the green building concept and obtain an overview of the incentive models they expect. The results of this study indicate the level of knowledge of building developers and building owners affects the ability of building management to achieve a sustainable concept. Besides, the aspect of sustainability has an impact on the acquisition of both internal and external incentives for developers and building owners. Specific incentive models that developers and owners expect are accelerating licensing and building certification and reducing property tax. The government also supports the provision of property tax compared to value-added tax because it is a controlling tool in implementing green building concepts. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Impacts of zeolite activation temperature and grain size toward bioretention system efficiency in removing Pb and Zn pollutant in stormwater runoff

Stormwater runoff can be utilized as a clean water supply through a simple treatment technology such as a bioretention system. However, this water treatment efficiency is influenced by various factors. Previous research showed that although the bioretention system had combined with a plant and media composition, effluent concentration still exceeds the quality standard. This research aimed to improve the bioretention efficiency in removing heavy metal Pb and Zn in stormwater runoff. Three variations of bioretention were prepared, with the same combination of 2 types of plants (Chrysopogon zizanioides and Iris pseudacorus) and media composition (zeolite: quartz: compost: soil = 6:2:1:1). The zeolite activation temperatures and grain sizes simulated with three discharges variation of initial Pb and Zn concentration of synthetic stormwater runoff. The results showed that modified bioretention produced higher Pb removal efficiency (99.95% on average) and Zn (98.89% on average). Besides, the effluent concentrations have met the water quality standard following Government regulation No. 82/2001. In conclusion, the higher temperature of activated zeolite combined with smaller grain size significantly enhance the removal efficiency of Pb and Zn in stormwater runoff.

A low number in green building development cause the building construction will have an immense direct and indirect impact on future generations. This paper identified the optimum incentive model driving the building efficiency achievement in green building operation and maintenance. Critical factors that influence building consultant and contractor decision in green building design and construction toward the operation and maintenance achievement planned were analysed using partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) methods. Precisely, the study modelled the regional policy affecting building efficiency achievement in the developing country. This research already identified the way of green building stakeholders' operations and maintenance in the capital city of Indonesia. Quantitative method using case study analysis already validated for the questionnaire data. The PLS-SEM indicated that sustainable in green building implementation and sustainability has significant causal effects on the regional policy of building the life cycle. Among these factors, tax exemption, expedited permit, and floor to area ratio were significant. The regional policy indicators in green building implementation have the most significant effect on building efficiency achievement. © 2020 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Purnama Beach is located along the village of Gelumpang Sukawati Village as the part of Sukawati District, Gianyar Regency. The majority of the population of Sukawati Village are Hindus who have many religious events especially related to the beach. The most frequently held ceremony at Purnama Beach is Tawur Agung Kesanga or Melasti ceremony, where Purnama Beach is used as the destination for a Melasti ceremony held by several areas around Sukawati District. The purpose of this study is (1) to identify the typology of spatial utilization in Purnama Beach area, (2) to formulate the various interests (actors) involved in Purnama Beach area, (3) to formulate the various functional changes that occur in the utilization of Purnama Beach area, (4) to identify the territories or zoning in Er Jeruk Temple, and (5) to formulate the various impacts that occur due to changes in the function of Purnama Beach area. So that this study can provide recommendations to mediate dualism conflicts in the use of sacred areas in Bali. It is expected to be useful in supporting regional spatial policies and sustainable tourism development. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Pedestrian path is an important element for outdoor activities in urban environment, as well as in campus area. Yogyakarta State University (YSU) is a campus which is still in progress to develop its physical environment, includes pedestrian areas. The research aims to study student's perceptions in using pedestrian path in campus area, especially in comfort aspects (direct route, line safety, and line clarity). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method by giving questionnaires using google form application to students. As a result, it is concluded three comfort indicators of student's perception on their campus pedestrian. First, the degree of achievement for experience indicators is 70.61%;it means that the experience indicators giving a good influence on the perceptions of YSU students. Second, the indicator of attraction is 80.85%, shows a very good influence on the perception of the students. Meanwhile, indicator of expectation is 76.86%, it means that the expectation indicator giving a pretty good influence on the perception of YSU students on the comfort of pedestrian. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The California bearing ratio and unconfined compressive strength of clay–palm kernel shell mixtures

Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is a by-product of the palm oil processing industry that is typically located in areas with very soft soil, particularly in South Kalimantan. It has been extensively studied as a replacement for concrete granular material. Hence, research into the potential use of PKS as a supplement to stabilize soft clay is required. This study aimed to investigate the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of compacted soft clay mixed with PKS. The clay was taken from a location around Banjarmasin. The sizes of PKS were 4.75mm (i.e. sieve No. 4) and 2mm (i.e. sieve No. 10) for CBR and UCS tests, respectively. Based on the dry mass, the clays was mixed with a PKS content of 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. The CBR and UCS tests were performed to the compacted specimens. The presence of PKS resulted made it easy in compacting the soft soil and increasing the CBR and UCS of the mixtures. The maximum CBR and UCS were obtained at the highest density (i.e. a PKS content of 2.5%). The values increased 1.5 and 3 times higher for CBR and UCS, respectively, as compared to the soil without PKS.
