In 2023, La Niña conditions that generally prevailed in the eastern Pacific Ocean from mid-2020 into early 2023 gave way to a strong El Niño by October. Atmospheric concentrations of Earth’s major greenhouse gases—carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide—all increased to record-high levels. The annual global average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere rose to 419.3±0.1 ppm, which is 50% greater than the pre-industrial level. The growth from 2022 to 2023 was 2.8 ppm, the fourth highest in the record since the 1960s. The combined short-term effects of El Niño and the long-term effects of increasing levels of heat-trapping gases in the atmosphere contributed to new records for many essential climate variables reported here. The annual global temperature across land and oceans was the highest in records dating as far back as 1850, with the last seven months (June–December) having each been record warm. Over land, the globally averaged temperature was also record high. Dozens of countries reported record or near-record warmth for the year, including China and continental Europe as a whole (warmest on record), India and Russia (second warmest), and Canada (third warmest). Intense and widespread heatwaves were reported around the world. In Vietnam, an all-time national maximum temperature record of 44.2°C was observed at Tuong Duong on 7 May, surpassing the previous record of 43.4°C at Huong Khe on 20 April 2019. In Brazil, the air temperature reached 44.8°C in Araçuaí in Minas Gerais on 20 November, potentially a new national record and 12.8°C above normal. The effect of rising temperatures was apparent in the cryosphere, where snow cover extent by June 2023 was the smallest in the 56-year record for North America and seventh smallest for the Northern Hemisphere overall. Numerical model of shoreline change by GENESIS (Generalized Model for Simulating Shoreline Change) and some field surveys were performed in the Pondok-bali Subang Distric of Indonesia. The objective of this investigation is to learn the cause of shoreline retreat that happen in Pondok-bali and its surrounding area in ten years nowadays. Based on field observation and the study result, we found that the waves occurred in East-wind monsoon, rip current and inundation due to water level raised have the significant contribution on an impact to shoreline retreat in Pondok -Bali.

Internet penetration in developing countries depend on a variety of factors, including the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the density of telephone connections, and the density of personal computer users. Internet kiosks have been deployed in 21 rural ditrict areas of Garut Regency to facilitate internet access for local/district government as well as for the community who have no access to internet. Each district was equiped with 10 PCs, a printer, a scanner, and an internet connection either using DSL or cellular access technology. The program was government sponsored through the Ministry of Communications and Information of the Republic of Indonesia. This program was also designed to provide education and training for the district internet kiosks operator as well as for the staffs of information technology at Garut Regency, on understanding, efficient use, management, maintenance, as well as the ethical/professional use of information to upgrade their skills. This study was then conducted to evaluate factors affecting internet penetration in rural areas of Garut Regency, West Java of Indonesia. © 2015 IEEE.

Bioremediation of Aged Petroleum Oil Contaminated Soil: From Laboratory Scale to Full Scale Application

Large quantity of aged petroleum oil contamination such as dehydrated oil sludge, generated in the disposal process of oil-containing sewage in Indonesia. This study aims to investigate the OSCS removal by mean of bioremediation technique. Results found that petrofilic consortia and biosurfactants addition increased the removal efficiency up to 46% and 85%, respectively. At full scale application, this technique succeed in removing of 46 g TPH per kg soil from 4 883 m 3 of OSCS during 16 mo of treatment. These results suggest that petrofilic consortia and biosurfactants addition stimulate the biodegradation and overcome the limitation of OSCS degradation process.

Different shapes and dimensions of test specimens are used for the determination of the uniaxial compressive strength of concrete. In order to compare strength results conversion formulas are needed. Those formulas are well-known for vibrated concrete (VC), whereas this is not the case for self-compacting concrete (SCC). In the paper, strength ratios of SCC are compared to those for VC as suggested by different standards. In total 24 powder-type SCC mixtures and 2 VC mixtures have been prepared and studied in order to analyze the effect on the strength ratio of several parameters, including the type of cement. The influence of the water-to-cement ratio (W/C), the cement-to-powder ratio (C/P) and the powder content (P) is investigated as well. The same mix procedure is applied in the three laboratories. In the mixtures SCC P520, SCC P560, SCC ref and SCC P640, the powder content varies, while C/P and W/C are kept constant. The effect is studied by replacing gravel by crushed limestone or crushed porphyry. The influence of the water-to-cement ratio, the cement-to-powder ratio, the powder content, the type of cement, the filler, the superplasticizer and the aggregate, on the compressive strength conversion factors seems to be insignificant or too scattered to be considered.

In this paper the coverage and capacity of CDMA system is evaluated using admission and power control to serve for low to medium speed internet services, such as digital TV or film/video streaming in rural areas. One of the unique characteristics of CDMA system is that it is possible to trade off between capacity and its coverage, called the cell-breathing. Open loop and closed loop power control can be used to increase the capacity of CDMA system; while admission control can be applied to trade-off between its capacity and the coverage. Computer simulation was conducted to evaluate the power control performance in Rayleigh fading channel. Then semi-analytical evaluation was performed to obtain the coverage-capacity trade-off. The result shows that the capacity of CDMA systems increases when power control was employed. Numerical and semi analytical evaluation show that CDMA coverage and capacity can be traded-off to meet various demand of traffic capacity and cell coverage in rural environments.

Summary Background Across low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), one in ten deaths in children younger than 5 years is attributable to diarrhoea. The substantial between-country variation in both diarrhoea incidence and mortality is attributable to interventions that protect children, prevent infection, and treat disease. Identifying subnational regions with the highest burden and mapping associated risk factors can aid in reducing preventable childhood *** We used Bayesian model-based geostatistics and a geolocated dataset comprising 15 072 746 children younger than 5 years from 466 surveys in 94 LMICs, in combination with findings of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors study (GBD) 2017, to estimate posterior distributions of diarrhoea prevalence, incidence, and mortality from 2000 to 2017. From these data, we estimated the burden of diarrhoea at varying subnational levels (termed units) by spatially aggregating draws, and we investigated the drivers of subnational patterns by creating aggregated risk factor *** The greatest declines in diarrhoeal mortality were seen in south and southeast Asia and South America, where 54·0% (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 38·1-65·8), 17·4% (7·7-28·4), and 59·5% (34·2-86·9) of units, respectively, recorded decreases in deaths from diarrhoea greater than 10%. Although children in much of Africa remain at high risk of death due to diarrhoea, regions with the most deaths were outside Africa, with the highest mortality units located in Pakistan. Indonesia showed the greatest within-country geographical inequality; some regions had mortality rates nearly four times the average country rate. Reductions in mortality were correlated to improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) or reductions in child growth failure (CGF). Pulp and paper industry generates large quantity of sludge, up to 1 m 3 /ton paper produced. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a potential treatment to stabilize sludge and produce biogas for renewable energy. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of AD of paper sludge (PS) generated from primary and secondary wastewater treatment and to compare the effect of cow manure to paper sludge. For the reactor with PS only, biogas production was observed starting on the 5 th day with 6.3% of methane with a steady increase. The cumulative methane yield attained to 14.7 ml/g volatile solid (VS) until day 28. The second reactor containing PS and cow manure produced methane 269 ml/g VS until day 28. This study shows a more optimal AD process of paper sludge mixed with cow manure due to a more optimum C/N ratio and also higher VS.
