Construction industry considerably contributes to the economy of a country;however, it is also a major polluter. Numerous researches have been done regarding pollution from construction activities, which are broadly classified as air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, and solid waste. However, those are often country specific and their degree and nature may vary according to the type of construction project as well, e.g. low-rise building, high-rise building, and infrastructure projects. Moreover, it appears to have no research conducted before regarding pollution from construction in Brunei Darussalam. The present research intends to fill this gap;as such this paper summarizes the sources of different kinds of pollution originating from construction activities and their potential mitigating strategies. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Developed and developing countries are observing increasing rate of road traffic accident (RTA) and they are investing in efforts trying to reduce the frequency and severity of RTA. Extensive research has been going on to develop methods to analyse historical RTA data using GIS tools to identify and rank RTA hotspots. This helps in prioritising expenditure distribution on road maintenance at road sections identified as RTA hotspots. The aim of this paper is to critically review some of the planar and network spatial analyses in RTA hotspot identification. The planar spatial analyses reviewed in this paper are one global statistical approach - Global Moran’s I and three local statistical approaches - Local Anselin Moran’s I, planar Kernel Density Estimation and Getis-Ord GI*. These geostatistical approaches are embedded in ESRI ArcMAP analyst extension tools. The network spatial analyses reviewed in this paper are two tools based on network Kernel Density Estimation - SANET and KDE+. A new addition is a network-based approach that accounts for RTA frequency, severity and socioeconomic costs - Spatial Traffic Accident Analysis (STAA). After review, it is found that network spatial analyses are more preferred to planar spatial analyses for RTA hotspot analysis (HSA) on or along a road network. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Organisations operate in dynamic environment and strive to survive and succeed in long run through structured act of management. This is usually approached through strategic management, focusing on continuous improvements in operational arrangements. However, the priority is on project management for organisational success in construction industry. It is therefore important to examine if, and how, strategic management is practiced in construction industry. Overall methodology of this research includes literature review, questionnaire survey and interviews. However, this paper is based on initial but structured review of literature to examine the commonalities and/or differences between the two management approaches and their contributions to organisational success. This paper then proposes a conceptual framework which combines both approaches based on their commonalities, to achieve organisational success. It is suggested that the collaboration between the two management approaches is critical for organisations to accomplish success. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. The practice of group assignments in Higher Education Institutions is argued to save time to teaching staffs and allow students to develop a range of skill-sets. However, assessing group works and consequent allocation of marks to individual students in a group is challenging. This paper presents an overview of available techniques for mark allocation to individual group members, presents an effort-based mark allocation scheme, and summarises the observations from implementing the scheme. It was observed that students have mixed opinion on differential treatment of individual marks on the basis of their contribution to delivering the group assignment. However, students were found to be appreciative of the scheme when they were engaged in the decision making process of how to assess their works and consequent apportionment of marks to individual members of the group. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Implementing the concept of green building is suitable in new buildings, but there exist a huge number of old buildings, which are crafted with modern, sustainable and energy efficient features to improve energy efficiency and environmental performance of old buildings. Thus, greening existing buildings significantly reduces energy consumption, and improves environmental and other performance levels. Overall methodology used for this research includes literature review, questionnaire survey and interviews. However, this paper summarises the outcomes from the structured literature review only. A total of 19 commonly used green features were identified. It is observed that those green features target improvement of efficiency in four different areas, namely energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor air quality and materials use. This will form the basis for further study of exploring the degree of benefits of certain green features and its consequent selection / used in specific building types. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Brunei continues to be inflicted by rainfall-induced floods that have been identified to be contributed by global climate change, increased population, developments, country’s geography and her relative location in the Asia-Pacific region. By and large, floods cause detrimental effects on the country’s social and economic health as well as damage to infrastructure and assets. Thus, it is becoming more imperative that a systematic study be conducted to identify the vulnerable locations (blue spots) in the flood-prone areas to help manage and mitigate the frequency and severity of floods respectively through engineering interventions. Using ArcMAP, the first goal of this paper is to determine the blue spots using planar spatial methods - Getis-Ord GI* statistics using aggregated data from 2010 to 2018 for Brunei River. The second goal is to use HEC-RAS two-dimensional unsteady flow analysis will be performed to model a flood event of 50-year return period to predict the flood depths and extents. Ultimately, the blue spot mapping helps many relevant departments to steer towards preparedness, protection and prevention strategies. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology. Power quality monitoring has an increasing role in the deregulated electricity supply market. Industrial and commercial customers are increasingly getting affected by poor power quality problems. A web based, near real time power quality monitoring system is necessary to provide such information, both locally and on Nationwide basis to customers. This paper aims to dive into the development of a web-based power quality monitoring system for commercial building. The power quality web-based system implemented using Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface (RESTful API) method as a web application. It also coordinates with a K-Nearest Neighbours machine learning model for classifying the power quality. In this project, the machine learning model managed to achieve an accuracy of 0.8125 over 1 which defines a good performance of the algorithm

Removal of pollutants from wastewater using tropical constructed wetland

A constructed wetland is considered as a cheap and sustainable alternative for wastewater treatment. The aim of this study is to find the most suitable plants or combination of plants along with the substrate for a horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetland in Brunei Darussalam. The plants performance regarding removal efficiency of E. coli (EC), Total Coliform (TC), Total Nitrogen (TN), Total Oil and Grease (TOG) and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) were determined during this study. Twelve units of cell A (A1, A3, and A4) made of pixel glass and four units of cell B made of concrete are filled with 0.4 m depth of substrate. Each of cell of A1, A3 and A4 is planted with any of these local plants such as Pandan (Pandanus amaryllifolius)/Nipah (Nypa fruticans) or Lalang (Imperata Cylindrica). The cells in B are planted with all three plants but with different ratio of plant density. Each cell's performance was analysed based on removal efficiency of EC and TC, TN, TOG and TPH. The study concluded that using sand as substrate was found to be most efficient for removing EC and TC consistently and effectively when planted with Nipah, Pandan and Lalang at a ratio of 1:1:1.

Impact of Indian almond leaves on aquarium water quality

There are very few studies done to understand the impact of Indian almond leaves (IAL) on aquarium water quality. Therefore, in this study, Indian almond leaves (IAL) were used to investigate the impacts on water quality in an aquarium with Betta fish as they are hardy fish, tolerant to changes in water quality, comparatively cheaper and more readily available in tropical countries. For this study, the powdered form of IAL was used for faster dilution or mixing. As for the aquarium tank, smaller tanks with a capacity of 4.5 litres are used since Betta fish is small in size and it is easy to be accommodated in the aquarium. The various dosage of IAL in power form (0-200 mg/L) was used to determine physical, chemical and biological parameters of aquarium water quality in the presence of Betta fish. The parameters were Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), Dissolved Oxygen (DO), turbidity, pH, chlorine and survivability test and tests were conducted on day 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28. All experiments had an increasing value of DO until Day 21 and gradually decreased, while BOD5 increased with increased IAL dosage. Ammonia concentration increased between day 5-10 and then started to decline at day 21 and pH values were decreasing with increased IAL dosage. The total coliform test has the highest total coliform count on day 28 for IAL dosage. The study revealed that Betta fish could survive for 28 days without any application of de-chlorinator. The optimum dosage of 50 mg/L of IAL can eliminate any requirement for de-chlorination for Betta fish.

Solid waste management has always been a global concern and continuous development of Brunei Darussalam’s consumption patterns will change causing more complicated waste streams. This study investigates the waste stream in Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) to identify the challenges and opportunities of solid waste management. This study is based on mixed research method approach integrating both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Qualitative information was obtained from in-depth interviews with municipal authorities and relevant departments and stakeholders with varying roles in the solid waste management system. Quantitative data gathered by questionnaire survey were conducted on the household and individual level within the project study area. The results from the survey indicates that 56.7% of the respondents have waste collection services provided by the Government and/or the private sector whilst the remaining 43.3% of respondents do not have such services. Out of the 56.7% of respondents with waste collection services, 92.2% are only provided with a single bin to store their waste whilst the remaining 7.8% are provided with segregated bins. In order for successful waste reduction strategies to be implemented in BSB, there must be an existing market for recyclable materials. © 2018 Institution of engineering and Technology.
