Distribution mapping of Open Defecation (OD) houses in East Surabaya based on Geographic Information System (GIS)

The purpose of this study is to know and locate the distribution of open defecation houses in East Surabaya of Surabaya City, Indonesia. Both of secondary and primary data are required for this research, the secondary data consist of the number of OD houses in East Surabaya and basic map of Surabaya City. Primary data consist of field survey OD houses of legal and illegal status. Mapping is conducted with mapping software based on geographical information system. The result of this research proves that there are 1.083 OD houses in East Surabaya and it is equally distributed throughout East Surabaya. The most OD sub-district (Kelurahan) is Gubeng with approximately 319 houses while the least is Kelurahan Tambaksari with 23 houses.

The effect of adding microalgae Spirulina platensis in making antibacterial soap

The infection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has increased to 8% in 2017 in Indonesia. This infection commonly occurs in hospital thus, individuals must maintain personal hygiene such as using antibacterial soap. Several commercial antibacterial soap in Indonesia still use triclosan and triclocarban as antibacterial agent. This is a problem because they have been banned by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2017. The use of them can disturb human reproduction system which lead to infertility and destroy algal growth. This study utilized Spirulina platensis and virgin coconut oil (VCO) as fatty acid source which reacted with sodium hydroxide to make soap. Furthermore, VCO also acted as antibacterial agent which can kill bacteria. Film-formed soap is expected to lessen soap and water waste. This soap was made by the hot process method at a temperature of 65°C. The examination done were free alkali, free fatty acid values, pH values, water content and antibacterial activity toward S. aureus. The result showed that all sample met the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) of hard soap. The use of VCO can substitute chemical-based antibacterial agent in soap because it has same ability in killing S. aureus in soap (at 25% dilution) which resulted in safer and environmentally friendly soap. The optimum composition in soap making were found in the use of 1 g S. platensis.

Whether climate change is real or not, the daily basis phenomena and its evidences should be our concern nowadays. Yogyakarta is one of the provinces that are vulnerable to the impact of climate change in Indonesia. The specific responses to climate change phenomena in Yogyakarta province are indirectly correlated to landscape characteristics. These characteristics are important aspects for the assessment and development of new approaches to address the impacts of climate change. Therefore, this paper presents the status of landscape vulnerability to climate change in Yogyakarta province to consider the issues of mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) was applied to determine the objective of the research. The results of previous studies were reviewed in depth and combined with field observations to build a strong argument before evaluating the matrices and weights in the AHP steps. The result analysis showed that the most vulnerable landscape in Yogyakarta province is the anthropogenic landscape, which is located in Yogyakarta city. Furthermore, the combination of population density and poor sanitation management should be considered as a factor in mitigating and adapting to climate change in Yogyakarta city.

Effect of increasing reaction temperature on quality of VCO and microalgae Spirulina platensis-based anti-bacterial soap

Antibacterial soap is the most popular soap in Indonesia as a cleaning agent. Unfortunately, antibacterial soap has some issues, such as the antibacterial ingredients used, and the soap form itself. Most of antibacterial ingredients used has been banned by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bacteria resistant to antibiotics. Therefore, we need safe antibacterial ingredients for both long and short term use. Microalgae Spirulina platensis is one of microalgae that contains safe antibacterial compound, such as phycocyanin. In addition, these types of microalgae have other compounds that are very beneficial for skin. This research aims to obtain the optimal saponification reaction temperature of VCO and microalgae Spirulina platensis based antibacterial soap. The alkaline used to make this soap was NaOH 6.25 M. The variation of reaction temperature used is 50, 60, and 70°C. Free alkali/free fatty acid content in soap was obtained by titrating soap solution using KOH or HCl depends on the characteristic of soap. Water content was obtained by gravimetric method. Meanwhile antibacterial activity was done in Jasa Pengujian dan Penelitian (QLab). Based on quality, soap that made of 70°C is the best sample with 13.09% (wt/wt) of water, 0.08% (wt/wt) of free alkali and minimum inhibitory value 0 or no bacteria growth until 25% of dilution.

Experimental study on the effectiveness of finger joint with variations in wood species toward bending strength of glulam beams

Recently, the utilization of timber as building materials was very promising for now and future. As renewable resources they have high mechanical properties, lightweight, environmentally friendly and economic. One of the most durable engineered wood products is glued-laminated timber which commonly called Glulam. Glulam is a material made of several layers of wood glued together with waterproof adhesive at specific pressure and temperature. The benefit of Glulam is enable to produce the structural member with longer span compared with solid wood. In other to obtain the structural Glulam with longer span, it required the finger joint connection on lamina layer. This study aims at to find out the effectiveness finger joint with variation in wood species towards flexural properties of Glulam beam. Experimental study have been done by using local wood Sengon and Rajumas as laminae and Biomatex as adhesive, at 0.6 MPa of clamp pressure. The variation of finger joint slope was tested are 1:8; 1:12; and 1:16. The result show that the glulam Sengon and Rajumas beam with slope finger joint of 1 over 12 produce the highest average bending strength of 299 kg/cm2 and 318 kg/cm2 respectively. The flexural strength of glulam Rajumas was 20% higher compared with glulam Sengon.

The Effect of EPS Addition to Soil Stabilized with Fly Ash as Lightweight Fill Materials for Embankment Construction

Design and construction of road embankment presents several challenges, including the possibility of bearing capacity failure, large total settlement, differential settlement, and slope instability, which may result from the weight of the embankment construction itself, and/or weak foundation. A number of techniques have been developed and can be used to overcome these problems, one of them is by modifying the weight of the embankment itself with the use of lightweight materials, such as soil-EPS mixture. The use of soil-EPS mixture as lightweight material provides several advantages, among which can achieve the same volume or elevation requirement with a significantly lighter weight compared to ordinary materials, improving slope stability, embankment over high compressibility soil, and to reduce soil pressure to soil retaining structures, abutment or bridge pillar. Fly ash also added to act as binder to increase shear strength of mixture. The result of the compaction test shows that the addition of a small amount of EPS to the mixture can significantly reduce the maximum dry density of the mixture. Triaxial UU and UCS test results show a reduction in mixture strength as EPS contents increase, but due to the presence of fly ash increases the strength of mixture as the number of day increases, so that the use of lightweight materials has the potential to be one of soil improvement solutions.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as an opportunistic pathogen in wound infections raises significant concerns due to its antibiotic resistance and biofilm-mediated antibiotic tolerance. This underscores the urgent need to explore an alternative approach to effectively managing wound infections caused by MDR A. baumannii. In this study, combining subinhibitory concentrations of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with photodynamic therapy-PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in a significant reduction of planktonic viabilities and biofilm biovolume of MDR A. baumannii clinical isolates in vitro. In murine A. baumannii-associated wound infection, a combination of curcumin (25 µg/ml) or chitosan (156 µg/ml) with PDT (10 J/cm²) resulted in complete bacterial eradication with wound healing at Day 15 of post-treatments with these combination therapies. Our study demonstrated that combining curcumin or chitosan with PDT at their subinhibitory concentrations represents a promising alternative strategy as localized therapy for effectively managing A. baumannii-associated wound infection. © 2025 The Authors

Organoleptic characteristic of goat milk kefir modified by fruity taste to improve early childhood nutrition

Research on the use of various fruits (lychees, strawberries, oranges, and grapes) to add nutritional value in kefir was conducted to 28 toddlers in early childhood age 4-5 years old. The study was carried out at Catering Laboratory FKIP Unsyiah, Dairy Science Production Technology and Laboratory and Al-Azhar Kindergarten Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The parameters observed in the first 3 months were to obtain a good kefir product. Data collection techniques used were sensory evaluation (observation test) conducted on 5 panelist and acceptance test (hedonic scale) by 28 toddlers as consumer panelists. Data was analysed using one way ANOVA with a significance level of 0.05. The results of the study based on observational tests by panelist noted that grape flavored kefir (M18) had the following characteristics: color 24.75, aroma 24.25, texture 24.5 and taste 24.25. The results of analysis on consumer acceptance showed that the preferred goat milk kefir was the orange flavored (M16) having an average value of 23.5 in color, 23.25 in aroma, 24 in texture, and 23 in taste. Consistency of fruit flavored kefir product was assessed. Also, based on the syneresis test, the kefir was popular in public especially at early childhood consumers.

Experimental evidence of enhancing scientific reasoning through guided inquiry model approach

As far as the fast-growing world of science education is concerned, the goal of teaching is not merely how to make students understand the key concepts in science, but it is also to prepare students to accomplish the prerequisite of higher order thinking skills, i.e. scientific reasoning. It covers problem-skill and reasoning abilities, from gathering to revising hypothesis, as the manifestation of knowledge change and knowledge achievement processes obtained by inquiry activities. Therefore, studies on exploring students’ scientific reasoning have magnetized experts in science education. Herein, guided inquiry model was conveyed to investigate the scientific reasoning of students in junior high school on the topic of pressure. The model was implemented for three consecutive meetings. The analysis was based on the students’ answers on 10 two-tier multiple choice questions and the questions comprised of 7 scientific reasoning indicators. After implementing the guided inquiry model and conducting the pretests and posttests in the classroom with 32 students, some important findings are found as follows: (1) increased scores of students’ tests are observed for each scientific reasoning indicator and each question and (2) every syntax of the guided inquiry provides an uplift to students’ scientific reasoning ability. The detailed evaluation of each two-tier question and indicator is described in this present paper.

The Application of Fuzzy Logic Method in the Debtors Eligibility Assessment System of Microfinance Institution

Decision-making processes in determining loan eligibility are often subjective which leads to imprecise credit predictions. Due to inaccurate inquiry on prospective customers done by field survey officers of Bank Perkreditan Rakyat (BPR) Bandung City, it has experienced credit complications such as bad credits. Therefore, this study aims to help decision-makers in determining creditworthiness and preventing bad credits from occurring. To realize this solution, the study uses the Fuzzy Logic method to calculate the creditworthiness of each prospective loaner based on the inquiries done in the field survey. Fuzzy Logic is known to be a 'counting' methodology with varying words. In addition, it can implement human expertise into machine language with ease and adequately. Based on numerous testing performed, the results demonstrate a level of 90% in accuracy when inputting within the valid ranges of each fuzzy set and membership function. However, the level of accuracy is only based on the clarification result which is determined by a researcher and BPR director, not a general level of accuracy for other microfinance institutions. Nevertheless, the findings of this study prove the method has a high enough accuracy to support decision-makers in determining the loan eligibility of prospective loaners and through this application in the surveying process, survey workers can work more efficiently. Hence, in future has a higher chance of predicting bad credits from potential loaners.
