Effect of treatment using Carica papaya seed extract with Ag–TiO₂ nanocomposite on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae

The incidence and mortality rate of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Indonesia have continued to increase. However, the insecticidal control of the vector of DHF, Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito), has resulted the development of insecticide resistance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects, singly and in combination, of two components with proven larvicidal activity, namely, the Ag–TiO2 nanocomposite and Carica papaya seed extract, on the mortality of A. aegypti larvae. This experimental study was categorized into the control and three intervention groups: 1) papaya seed extract at concentrations of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 ppm; 2) Ag–TiO2 at concentrations of 0, 5,10,15, 20, and 25 ppm; and 3) mixture of Ag–TiO2 and C. papaya seed extract 50% and 90% lethal concentration. After 24 h exposure, the 50% lethal concentration and the 90% lethal concentration were determined for the Ag–TiO2 nanocomposite (5.19 ppm and 10.87 ppm, respectively) and the C. papaya seed extract (25.98 ppm and 44.30 ppm, respectively). Significant differences were detected among Ag–TiO2 concentrations and mixture-group concentrations (p < 0.05). Significant positive correlations were detected between larval mortality and Ag–TiO2 concentrations and mixture group concentrations (r = 0.812, p = 0.001 and r = 0.343, p < 0.001, respectively). Changes in the visual appearance of dead larvae following treatment with nanocomposites and/or seed extract included damage to the abdominal segments, increased transparency of the abdomen, and reduced brush numbers. Therefore, the addition of the nanocomposite Ag–TiO2 to C. papaya seed extract increased the larvicidal effectiveness of the seed extract against A. aegypti larvae.

Sustainability Challenge of Micro Hydro Power Development in Indonesia

Rural electrification using renewable energy is the best choice for many locations that far away from national grid. Many renewable energy project have been built for rural electrification such as micro hydro power plant (MHPP) and solar photovoltaic (SPV). Sustainability still the main challenge of off-grid renewable energy development for off-grid rural electrification in Indonesia. The objective of this paper is to review sustainability of micro hydro power development in Indonesia. The research method was done by field observation, interview with MHPP management, and reviewing some research about MHPP in Indonesia. Sustainability issues include various aspects that can be classified into 5 dimensions: technical, economic, socio-cultural, institutional, and environmental. In technical factors that lead to sustainability problem are: improper MHPP design and construction, improper operation and maintenance, availability of spare parts and expertise. In the economic dimension are generally related to: low electricity tariff and utilization of MHPP for productive use. In the social dimension are: the growth of consumer's load exceeding the capacity, reduced number of consumers, lack of external institutional support. In the institutional side, it is generally related to the ability of human resources in managing, operating and maintaining of MHPP. Environmental factors that lead the sustainability problems of MHPP are: scarcity of water discharge, conflict of water resources, land conversion over the watershed, and natural disasters.

Numerical modeling approach taking into account the influence of delamination for performance capacity of reinforced concrete beam strengthened in bending by CFRP

Reinforced concrete members strengthened in bending by externally bonding of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) may present several failure modes: failure of material or failure of the interface between concrete-CFRP. Nevertheless, experience gained from testing confirms that in most cases delamination prevails over the other possible rupture modes. Delamination in CFRP strengthened sections is difficult to model because it involves multiple parameters such as FRP stiffness, adhesive material properties, presence of cracks in concrete, among others. A simplified numerical model to predict flexural capacity of reinforced concrete beam strengthened by CFRP at failure is presented in this paper. The experimental validation is presented as well. Based on the result of the proposed model, an equation for the prediction of ultimate flexural capacity to prevent CFRP debonding is proposed.

Numeric model to predict the location of market demand and economic order quantity for retailers of supply chain

Polynomials and Spline regression are the numeric model where they used to obtain the performance of methods, distance relationship models for cement retailers in Banda Aceh, predicts the market area for retailers and the economic order quantity (EOQ). These numeric models have their difference accuracy for measuring the mean square error (MSE). The distance relationships between retailers are to identify the density of retailers in the town. The dataset is collected from the sales of cement retailer with a global positioning system (GPS). The sales dataset is plotted of its characteristic to obtain the goodness of fitted quadratic, cubic, and fourth polynomial methods. On the real sales dataset, polynomials are used the behavior relationship x-abscissa and y-ordinate to obtain the models. This research obtains some advantages such as; the four models from the methods are useful for predicting the market area for the retailer in the competitiveness, the comparison of the performance of the methods, the distance of the relationship between retailers, and at last the inventory policy based on economic order quantity. The results, the high-density retail relationship areas indicate that the growing population with the construction project. The spline is better than quadratic, cubic, and four polynomials in predicting the points indicating of small MSE. The inventory policy usages the periodic review policy type.

A novel entrapped cells-based-forward osmosis membrane bioreactor (E-FOMBR) was developed for domestic wastewater treatment. Its performances and fouling were investigated in comparison with suspended cells-based-forward osmosis membrane bioreactor (S-FOMBR). E-FOMBR and S-FOMBR were operated side by side under the same conditions with two draw solutions (NaCl and (NH4)2SO4). Permeate flux decline was contributed by reverse salt flux and membrane fouling. The membrane fouling especially irreversible fouling in S-FOMBR was more severe than that in E-FOMBR. The effects of salt accumulation on system performances were investigated. E-FOMBR provided consistent removal of soluble chemical oxygen demand as well as methane production. Deterioration of biological activity due to substantial accumulation of salt, especially in S-FOMBR, was observed. Biofouling and inorganic scaling coexisted on membrane surface, with C, O, Na, S, and Cl identified on the draw solution side and C, O, Na, S, Cl, Mg, Al, Si, P, K, Ca, and Fe identified on the feed solution side when NaCl was used as a draw solution. For foulants when (NH4)2SO4 was applied as a draw solution, C, O, P, S, Ca, Fe, and Al were detected on the draw solution side and C, O, P, S, Ca, Fe, Cl, and Si were on the feed solution side. The superiority of E-FOMBR over S-FOMBR included higher and more stable system performances, higher flux and longer operation time. © 2017 Water Environment Federation

East Jakarta icon as a buffer and the lungs of the city is still a big dream of Jakarta. It is a classic problem that there is a struggle for land between current economic interests and sustainable environmental interests for the future. This paper discusses the development of urban forest area of Halim Perdana Kusuma, East Jakarta. The forest area according to regulations of existing city local governments is not enough to support sustainable urban development indicators. Therefore, it requires an extensive mapping of urban forest potential development accurately by utilizing satellite imaging technology. Landsat-TM satellite imagery data can provide a full picture of the potential land width for urban forest area development. The results of this satellite image will then be made into a model of urban forest as one of the indicators of sustainable urban development. This research aims to support sustainable urban development through environmental balance in the form of a green neighborhood revitalization and development of urban forests and to create socio-economic balance. This paper uses a dynamic system model to simulate the conditions of the region against the intervention performed in the potential area for development of urban forests which are derived from urban spatial analysis based on satellite image data, using GIS program as a tool. The result is a model of urban forest area which is integrated with a social and economic function to encourage the development of sustainable cities.

Effect of Sugar on Nutrient Composition and Shelf Life of Red Guava Jams

Red guava as fruit jams normally preserved using added sugar to prolong its shelf life. Heating process and different sugar content could affect in nutrient content and expiration date. Hence, the aim of this study was to evaluate the nutrient content and shelf life of jams based on two different sugar content. Two hundred (jam A) and two hundred and fifty grams of sugar (jam B) was added in 800 grams of guava then cooked at 70°C within an hour. Protein and fat was measured using Kjeldahl and soxhlet, while water and ash content was analyzed using thermogravimetry and dry ash method. Carbohydrate was calculated using by difference method. Shelf life determination was obtained using organoleptic test, containing taste, aroma, and visual sensory. In result, jam A have a higher protein (0.334%), fat (1.567%), and water (29.21%) than jam B (0.306%; 1.092%; 27.32%). On the other hand, ash (0.34%) and carbohydrate (68.549%) in jam A are lower than B (0.37% and 70.912 respectively). Overall, jam A have a higher protein, fat, water and carbohydrate content than jam B. A higher water content potentially indicate a lower shelf life which seen in jam A. In conclution, terms of nutritional composition, jam A have higher content than jam B, but have lower shelf life.

Queueing is commonly occured at every industry. The basic model of queueing theory gives a foundation for modeling a manufacturing system. Nowadays, carbon emission is an important and inevitable issue due to its huge impact to our environment. However, existing model of queuing applied for analysis of single stage manufacturing system has not taken Carbon emissions into consideration. If it is applied to manufacturing context, it may lead to improper decisisions. By taking into account of emission variables into queuing models, not only the model become more comprehensive but also it creates awareness on the issue to many parties that involves in the system. This paper discusses the single stage M/M/1 queueing model that involves emission variable. Hopefully it could be a starting point for the next more complex models. It has a main objective for determining how carbon emissions could fit into the basic queueing theory. It turned out that the involvement of emission variables into the model has modified the traditional model of a single stage queue to a calculation model of production lot quantity allowed per period.

Breast cancer is the leading type of malignant tumor which is observed in women. The effective treatment depends on its early diagnosis. The gold standard of breast cancer is histopathologic examination of cancer cells. The determination of the grading in breast cancer is determined by three factors: pleomorphic, tubular formation and cell mitosis. This paper uses pleumorfic and tubular formation pattern from breast cell histopathology images. The proposed system consists of four major steps : preprocessing, segmentation, feature extraction and classification. We use k – means clustering method for image segmentation and use Gray level Cooccurence Matrix (GLCM) for feature extraction with four features (i.e. angular second moment, contrast feature, entropy feature, and variance feature). The final step is grading classification which uses Backpropagation Neural Network. Some of important parameters will be variated in this process such as learning rate and the number of node in hidden layer. The research gives good result for the identification of breast cancer grading with 88% accuracy, 85% sensitivity, and 80% specificity.
