This paper reports three aspects of an ongoing building archeology project at the MacPheadris-Warner House (ca. 1716–23) in Portsmouth, N.H., U.S.A. One is the use of a portable moisture meter to map rising damp levels and areas of water infiltration through brickwork. The second is the mapping of crack patterns and other defects on exterior elevations. We will also refer to a second site, the Juliette Gordon Low House in Savannah, Georgia, in discussing the problem of crack mapping. The third project is an ongoing attempt to replicate a shell lime mortar.

This paper presents a framework, aiming to develop the mass customization for textile and apparel industries in Thailand. The developed model as presented is the relationship of the connection pertaining to customers’ needs at industrial levels, most of which are Original Design Manufacturer (OEM), a type of textile and apparel business. The outstanding of OEM is the presentation of newly created designs to customers with a variety of products. Importantly, in order to gain such effective production management, an appropriate administrative system with high flexibility, efficient production (Small Lot Size), and punctual delivery is crucially required. In relation to the framework for mass customization development, it concerns three main related involvements: customers, OEM industries, and suppliers, all of which will be assessed so as to be promptly employed in such firms manufacturing products in accordance with the productive systems of mass customization *** conceptual from mass customization systems will facilitate the management in terms of the production designing in factories, aiming at clustering which is complex to the creation of platform from common parts, leading to the development of a variety of goods by the process of product family.

A user-centered taxonomy for specifying mixed reality systems for aec industry

Compared to the attention given to Virtual Reality, the relatedemerging technology of Mixed Reality (MR) has been little explored, until recently, for its applications in the Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) arena. Observations of the limited lab-based MR applications for AEC highlight the need for a structured methodology that can address suitability and usability issues in order for the full potential of the technology to be *** scientific contribution of this paper is the presentation of a comprehensive multi-dimensional taxonomy for specifying MR technology and characteristics, using Milgram's general taxonomy as a springboard. Characteristics including media representation, input mechanism, output mechanism, and tracking technology are progressively disclosed regarding suitability and usability suggestions and context-driven discussion. Some of the characteristics are presented as continuums. Understanding the relationship between a task purpose and the technology's actual position in the continua may help developers identify usability weaknesses and strengths, with the potential to suggest alternative solutions. The taxonomy provides a thorough classification, enumeration, and discussion of MR technology, which can be used to emphasize the importance of user-centered approaches to MR-based application development. The benefit to developers and researchers is a structured framework for developing prototype MR systems for industrial and experimental use. The benefit for practitioners is an enhanced understanding of how MR-based computer interfaces might be exploited to facilitate their work. © 2011 The authors.

A hierarchical taxonomy of aec operations for mixed reality applications

Mixed Reality (MR), or more specifically Augmented Reality (AR) technology, is frequently mentioned as a solution to human performance problems of degraded perception and cognition. There have been few attempts to develop lab-based MR prototypes for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) operations and thus no commercial MR applications can be found in the industry today. It is envisioned that useful MR systems will support the execution of information-intensive tasks, and identification of opportunities for MR requires analysis of AEC tasks at the appropriate level of detail. This paper develops an AEC task taxonomy and task analysis method for understanding the nature of a given task from a user-centered perspective. The composite and primitive levels are deemed appropriate levels for MR mapping to technology. The paper also identifies a set of influencing factors that should be analyzed and considered while selecting from among the MR technological component alternatives. Until construction product and process design become more highly integrated, MR technology applications can only occur at the lower level task, constrained to very limited application areas. © 2011 The authors.

An iterative methodology for mapping mixed reality technologies to AEC operations

Mixed Reality (MR) technology can create an environment where objects from the digital and real worlds can be combined together in a real time manner. The practical contribution of this paper is a structured and iterative methodology developed for mapping appropriate Mixed Reality technology to a specific architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) task. To increase the likelihood of success in technology transfer, this methodology for developing user-centered, performance enhancing MR-based systems is formulated, where AEC tasks are generically analyzed and categorized according to common functional features, which could be mapped to a collection of suitable or required MR-related technology strategies. Also, a technology selection process is identified to choose appropriate technology characteristics including information representations, interaction methods and, tracking technology for a specific task category. Such a thorough mapping methodology can be used to guide new MR-based system design as well as to help evaluate existing systems. © 2011 The authors.

Strategic environmental assessment application for sustainable transport-related air quality policies: A case study in Hanoi City, Vietnam

Recognition has grown among policy-makers that early in the decision-making process, there is a need for an environmental assessment of the effects of the policy, plan, and program (PPP) and their alternatives. Strategic environmental assessment (SEA) is widely recognized as a supporting tool that systematically integrates environmental aspects into strategic decision-making processes, thereby contributing to sustainable development. In this study, SEA was applied for an integrated assessment of environmental, social, and economic impacts of a wide range of scenarios for transport-related air quality policies to help decision-makers in identifying the most sustainable scenario with the purpose of reducing carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations from transport emissions in Hanoi City, Vietnam. In conducting SEA process, the urban air dispersion model MUAIR was used as a quantitative tool in prediction of CO concentrations. To evaluate the predicted impacts of scenarios, the SEA objectives concerning sustainability and the corresponding sustainable indicators were identified. Based on the likely significant predicted impacts on landscape, biodiversity, and health benefits, mitigation measures were proposed. These included planning in infrastructure development and implementation of public education campaign. The results of predicted and evaluated impacts of scenarios as well as proposed mitigation measures were taken into account for supporting sound decision-making that is consistent with the principles of sustainable development. Considering sustainable impacts of the scenarios, the SEA result clearly indicates that a combination of policy for public transport development and policy for installation of oxidation catalytic converter for motorcycles is the most sustainable scenario for reducing CO concentrations from transport emissions. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.

Social navigation provides drivers with an advice that aims to shift traffic flows in a network from a user equilibrium to a system optimum. The advice is based on minimizing a combination of the individual travel time and the marginal total travel time in the network. The level of altruism defines the extent to which a driver is willing to sacrifice his own travel time in favor of other drivers. Fuel consumption and CO2 emission are taking into account by converting them into time equivalent. Experimental results for a small network loosely representing the Bay area show that social navigation can reduce time delays by 10%. The reduction is positively correlated with network load, market penetration and level of altruism.

Seismic retrofitting with steel brace is widely-spread for the seismic retrofitting of existing RC buildings. However, there has been no study that tried to apply this seismic retrofit method to existing RC buildings with very low-strength concrete. In this research, we confirmed the effect of seismic retrofitting steel brace which used post-installed anchor together with epoxy resin for RC structures with low-strength concrete through the structural tests of two series. As the beginning, we confirmed the shear strength of the indirect connection in which existing RC frame is tied to frame of steel brace. Next, we confirmed the mechanical behavior of RC frame retrofitted with steel brace subjected to axial and horizontal loads. From the structural tests, it was shown that ultimate strength of the indirect connection and RC frame retrofitted with steel brace can be estimated by the current evaluation method. In addition, it made clear that ductility index F of RC frame retrofitted with steel brace can be 2.0.

One of games used as educational media is in hajj learning since Indonesia is well known as a country with the biggest hajj pilgrims every year. This research developes a HajjGame that provides a series of phase of the Hajj. HajjGame is adapted from the role playing game (RPG). RPG is a game genre with the story flows using agents as individual characters representative players equipped by certain tools, action/skill and ability to manage resources also ability to complete a special mission. One of the units of agent achievement in the RPG is experience point (XP) that is usually given after defeating enemies, collecting resources, or completing a challenge. So, the statistical ability for agents will increase, such as the status of health or adding new skills. Goal of this research is to measure the player achievement score combine with the educational credit based on Hajj phase. Player will get a credit accumulation/points after completing a task of learning. In this case, the task of learning is Hajj manasik that divide into 6 stages: Ihrom, Mabit in Mina, 'Arafah, Muzdalifah, throw Jamarat, Thawaf in Masjidil Haram and Sai. Each stage of Hajj will have detail actions that must be passed by an agent and will have educational credit (EC) points. Result from this research shows that a combination of XP and educational-credit on increasing learning and scoring as player's achievement. The challenge for the players will still available and the ability to understand the phase of the Hajj will be obtained. © 2010 IEEE.
