This article presents the development of green and sustainable mortars using alkali-activated high-calcium fly ash (AAFA) and recycled glass (RG) as part of the fine aggregate. RG was used to replace river sand at dosages of 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight. Sodium hydroxide (SH) and sodium silicate (SS) solutions were used as liquid alkaline activators in all mixtures. The AAFA samples were prepared with different liquid-to-binder ratios of 0.6 and 0.7, and the ratio of SS-to-SH was fixed at 2.0. Compressive and flexural strengths were determined at the ages of 7, 28, and 60 days. Test results showed that the compressive and flexural strengths of AAFA mortars declined as RG replacement increased;nevertheless, they increased with curing time. The high Na2O concentration derived from RG and the weak interfacial transition zone of RG are reasons for the decrease in strength development. The optimum percentage replacement of fine aggregates with RG was found at 25%. The 28-day compressive strength of AAFA with 25% RG was 32.5 MPa for L/B ratios of 0.6 and 29.5 MPa for L/B ratios of 0.7, which resulted in a strength index higher than 75% while releasing low CO2. © 2023 Nattapong Damrongwiriyanupap et al.

Heavy metal and microplastic pollutions are prevalent in freshwater ecosystems, with many freshwater bodies being contaminated by one or both of these pollutants. Recent studies reported extreme detections of Cd, Pb and Zn, high concentrations of Cr, Pb and Cu and microplastics acting as vectors of pollutants, including heavy metals. Mayflies can serve as bioindicators of heavy metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems because changes in their community structure, physiology, and behaviour can reflect and help predict the concentrations of metals in these environments. This review discusses the ecological alterations induced by tissue metal concentration in mayflies and other macroinvertebrates. As sensitive taxa to heavy metal contamination, mayflies can reflect the impacts of this pollution through their ethology and relationship to the substrate, highlighting issues such as eutrophication, alterations in community structure, inhibitory effects and sediment toxicity. Mayflies are also highly affected by microplastic exposure, which leads to ingestion, bioaccumulation, biomagnification, habitat and community alteration, behavioural changes, physiology alteration and toxicity. Mayflies bioindication metrics for assessing the impact of heavy metals and microplastics include the examination of community alteration, functional feeding behaviour, molecular structure, dietary and toxicity impacts, bioaccumulation and biomagnification and biomarkers. Current challenges for the utilization of mayflies as bioindicators include temporal variations in sensitivity, lack of universally recognised protocols and need for standardised protocols for microplastic analysis. Additionally, the applicability of mayflies as bioindicators may vary across different ecosystems, emphasising the need for selecting suitable indicators that align with the unique characteristics of the ecosystem. © 2024 The Authors

Due to the impacts of cement manufacturing and depletion of the natural aggregates for concrete production, recycling of construction and demolition waste materials has become an alternative replacement to natural materials that lower their consumption and satisfy the environment. One of these alternatives is replacing cement with recycled materials from marble, ceramic, granite, and concrete wastes or even replacing the coarse aggregate with crushed marble and other stone wastes. Marble, granite, and natural stone wastes rapidly increase each year due to unmanaged waste disposal processes and the incremental increase in construction potential. Marble slurry, which comes from washing and cleaning marble surfaces, shows a filler effect by giving the concrete a denser and homogenous structure. This study evaluates the marble filler effects on the rheology in the fresh state of Self-compacting Concrete (SCC) through four SCC mixes by incorporating 10% marble powder (MP) and 33% fly ash (FA) as a partial Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) replacement. Tests on paste and mortar were conducted to assess the suitability of the marble dosage on the water content and the superplasticizer amount. spread flow, and V-funnel tests were assessed. The results showed that mixes with MP required additional mixing water to ensure the same workability. Regardless of the high viscosity and air content, the overall developed marble SCC mixes reduced the cement quantity by up to 11% and provided excellent rheological properties like that of the reference mix. Besides the economic benefits, this transformation of waste to valuable materials involves environmental advantages and sustainability promotion.

Manggarai Gate is one of the most important flood control structures of the Jakarta Flood Control System. Its performance capacity is a compulsory parameter for flood risk reduction of the Jakarta Flood Prone Area. This paper aims to evaluate the contribution of the capacity improvement of Manggarai Gate to reduce the flood hazard at Manggarai flood-prone areas located in the upper part of this gate. An additional gate section was conducted in 2015 as the structural flood hazard reduction effort to increase the capacity of this gate from 330 m3/s to 507 m3/s. Recorded floods characteristic event before and after this improvement was compared to determine the flood hazard changes during the flood observation period. Based on this determination results it is found that the contribution of the increment capacity of Manggarai gates in reducing the flood hazard depends on the sustainability of the river capacity, river water quality, and flood control operation. It could also be concluded the sustainability of the river capacity and river water quality is very sensitive to the social behavior of the community and the river stakeholder along the river catchment area in addressing the environmental condition of the river catchment area. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The dissolved organic matter in initial rainwater (RDOM), including soil-dissolved organic matter (SDOM) and water-soluble organic matter (WSOM) in the atmosphere, can potentially mediate the migration and transformation of contaminants in natural water. However, researches on its sources, characteristics, and impact of environmental factors are limited. This study aims to investigate the main sources of RDOM and its properties influenced by environmental factors (such as light exposure and temperature variation). The results revealed that RDOM was mainly composed of SDOM. Temperature (–5°C, −20°C, temperature alternating, 40°C, 50°C, 60°C) induced the variation of SDOM components, altering its fluorescence characteristics, aromatic components, and hydrophobicity. And high temperature showed a more pronounced effect on SDOM components. However, temperature fluctuations had different impacts on the SDOM-mediated photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA). Among them, only SDOM that had undergone freeze-thaw cycles exhibited a promotive effect on the photodegradation of BPA, with the most significant effect observed at −20°C. Illumination (ultraviolet light (UV) and natural light (NL)) consumed the chromophoric groups of SDOM, disrupted its intricate electron transfer structure, and reduced the production of •OH and Triplet-state dissolved organic matter ( 3 DOM∗). So, illumination, especially UV, significantly weakened its mediating effect on the photodegradation of BPA. Based on these findings above, RDOM through temperature increase and illumination potentially leads to an inhibition of the degradation rate of organic pollutants. Conversely, RDOM may exhibit an enhanced ability following a freeze-thaw process. This study is crucial for elucidating the environmental effects of RDOM.

The past COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the use of disposable masks, posing a significant environmental challenge due to the swift accumulation of waste. This study explores the potential of pyrolysis to transform this waste into valuable pyrolysis oil with characteristics akin to gasoline, addressing both waste management and energy derivation concerns. Pyrolysis, a thermal decomposition process, was applied to mask materials, producing an oil with a high calorific value of 45.93 MJ/kg. The chemical makeup of this pyrolytic oil was meticulously characterized using Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (PY-GC/MS) and Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), confirming the presence of hydrocarbons similar to those found in gasoline. Achieving an efficiency of 41.865 %, the pyrolytic approach demonstrated a promising potential for not only managing mask waste but also creating an alternative energy carrier. However, the study advises that before considering this pyrolytic oil for engine use, a thorough evaluation of its combustion quality, engine compatibility, and environmental impact is essential. This investigation advances the discussion on sustainable waste management, offering insights into the generation of alternative fuels from daily waste streams, while also highlighting the necessity for comprehensive analyses to ensure the practicality and efficiency of such novel energy solutions. © 2023 The Author(s)

The Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is one of the endemic animals in Java, Indonesia, which is currently threatened with extinction and is included in the 25 species program as the top priority for the Indonesian government. In 2021 the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry said that only 75 Javan rhinos remained in Ujung Kulon National Park in Banten Province. Ujung Kulon National Park is the primary habitat of the Javan rhino, so it requires special attention to protect this habitat. One of the reasons for the reduced population of the Javan rhinoceros is the diminishing availability of habitat. Habitat reduction occurs due to changes in land cover due to human activities. This study aims to identify changes in the habitat suitability of the Javan rhinoceros due to human pressure. Parameters of human pressure will be identified using changes in land cover in 2000 and 2018. Remote sensing and GIS technology will be used to monitor habitat suitability for endemic animals over a large area and a long time. The Javan rhino habitat suitability analysis in 2000 and 2018 will integrate geographical, environmental, and meteorological parameters. The MCDA (Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis) method will determine a decision from several suitability parameters. Based on observations of human activities parameters, there have been significant changes to land cover from 2000-2018, especially in residential areas, which negatively impacted the suitability of the Javan Rhino's habitat. The results of this study can identify priority areas that require protective action for the Javan Rhinoceros habitat. This research is expected to be the basis for protecting endangered endemic animals, especially the Javan Rhinoceros, so their habitat is preserved. © 2023 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. The problem of flooding in Central Vietnam in general and the lower Ba River in particular is one of the natural disasters that frequently threatens people's lives and socioeconomic development in the ***,climate change is becoming ever more prominent and hotter,making extreme natural disasters more unusual and *** this research,MIKE-FLOOD—a model that connects a 1-dimensional(1-D)MIKE 11 Hydrodynamics(HD)model with a 2-dimensional(2-D)MIKE 21 HD model—was used to set *** model was calculated for three floods:(1)flood in October 1993,(2)flood in November 2003,and(3)flood in November 2007;these are floods with high frequency and relatively large *** results show that the 1993 flood rose and receded *** flood peak inundated an area of 22,600 ha,accounting for 52%of the natural *** flooded areas deeper than 1,2,3,4,and 5m were 16500,11,000,7000,4200,and 2200 ha,*** the center of Tuy Hoa city,the flooded area at the time of maximum water level was almost 100%.

The society often faces a communication barrier with the deaf and mute community due to the lack of sign language translators. Hand gestures are used as a sign language to communicate between the ordinary people and the deaf people. However, the existing way to learn sign language is ineffective and inconvenient. The number of mobile translator applications for the Malaysian Sign Language on the market is less. The proposed system contains a sign detector mechanism using Support Vector Machine (SVM) to detect and interpret Malaysian Sign Language. The software used in this project were IntelliJ IDEA and Android Studio. This project's development consists of four main phases: dataset acquisition, dataset trainer, shape classification, and sign recognition. Each character is tested ten times to measure the performance of the developed system. The application is performed using an Android smartphone and successfully tested with character A to Z in a normal light condition with a maximum distance of 0.7 m. The successfully testing rate of this developed system is 90%. This application allows people to easily communicate with the deaf community because it is user-friendly and does not require an internet connection. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

There are many cities on the west coast of the Sumatra, which are at high risk of the Tsunami disaster. Regional Regulations on Regional Spatial Planning for each City/Regency have compiled disaster mitigation by constructing several evacuation roads. This study wants to illustrate: what are the volume of traffic generation and road performance, if there is a Tsunami disaster. The simulation is developed by predicting traffic volume based on parameters, population density, vehicle ownership, land use, and activities in the area around the road. The assessment was carried out on two tsunami evacuation roads in the city of Padang, West Sumatra Province. The results show that the highest traffic volume occurred in the period from 06.30 a.m until 3:00 p.m., during school activities. One of the roads will not be able to accommodate the volume of traffic during a disaster, due to significant traffic congestion. This study shows that: (1) the period of activity and land use are two main parameters, which must be considered in designing tsunami evacuation roads, (2) The degree of saturation ratio and the ratio between the capacity of sections of Tsunami evacuation routes can be proposed as a parameter for assessing the performance of Tsunami evacuation roads in urban areas. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.
