Estimating and tracing actual crop water demands during the growing season are necessarily essential as it can be the basic and useful information for achievement of irrigation water management and reservoir operation practices. The crop water demand (ETcrop) is commonly determined by multiplying the crop coefficient (Kc) and reference crop evapotranspiration (ETo) calculating from meteorological data at the nearby stations. In this study, the planting area and growth stage of crops in the Tortongdang, Wangbua, Wangyang and Nongkhwan Operation and Maintenance Projects, which are located in the Lower Ping River Basin, were tracked and crop coefficient was evaluated using weather based irrigation scheduling (IrriSAT) application for estimation of crop water requirement. IrriSAT provides the satellite images processing of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) of planting area of crop and uses empirical relationship to find Kc. Kc values of season and off-season crops planting in four irrigation area during 2000-2019 were traced by IrriSAT and the results were compared with average Kc-RID values which were calculated as a function of Kc from field observation for the different types of crop and accumulated area of crops monitored by the remote sensing. The results showed the similar patterns of average Kc over the growth stages of crops. However, the Kc values calculated by IrriSAT for four irrigation area were slightly deviated from Kc-RID values in some growing periods. Therefore, calibrating Kc values calculated by IrriSAT was then conducted in this study to estimate actual crop water use and benchmark with the filed observation data. Geochemical Investigation on the Implications of Fluid Origin, Subsurface Processes and Recharge on the Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Conceptual Model

Tangkuban Perahu and nearby volcano-hosted geothermal prospects are believed to be important for future power generation in West Java, Indonesia. Recharge areas of these prospects and geothermal fluid evolution are not yet fully understood. The objectives of this investigation are to describe the fluid origin, processes, and evolution of geothermal fluids in relation to the recharge and the conceptual model of the Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Systems (TPGS). The investigation involved sampling and analysis of geothermal waters, rainwater, and gases collected in fumaroles and other manifestations around the TPGS. Isotopic results of δ18O and δ2H collected from thermal and rainwater indicate deep-circulating meteoric origin, at an infiltration altitude ranges between 753-850 m in low terrain. Meanwhile, the high-standing terrain indicates the recharge zone to be within the wall of the Sunda Caldera and mountain slopes. Chondrite normalized patterns reveal an overall flat trendline that suggests the enrichment of Lower Rare Earth Elements (LREEs) in the central part of Tangkuban Perahu which is derived from the magmatic influx. The non-atmospheric gases origin was diagnosed by the lower N2/Ar (≤ 38) and is characterized of meteoric origin. The positive δ18O shifts from Ciater (CT), Batu Gede (BG), and Domas crater (KwD) geothermal waters samples comparatively to local meteoric lines are influenced by the interaction with wall rocks or magmatic influx. In these geothermal systems, the meteoric water infiltrated to the depth is heated, mixed with near-surface water, and followed by partial discharge as thermal springs along faults. © 2022, The Authors. Most local governments in Indonesia experienced problems in developing pavements on expansive soil as observed in the damages to the road segment due to the conditions of the soil and excessive traffic loads. This has led to the rehabilitation of the road pavement by designing a continuous rigid structure without reinforcement. Therefore, this study aimed to analyse and evaluate the condition of a jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) structure without reinforcement based on the results of deflection and tensile stress. The process involved the application of Manual Road Pavement method to determine the pavement thickness as well as the use of analytical and numerical analysis to produce tensile and deflection values at CBR variations of 2% to 6%. Moreover, loads were applied at the edge and centre of the concrete plates and the results from the two methods of analysis were compared to determine the usefulness of different types of reinforced rigid pavement on the conditions of expansive soil subgrade. Meanwhile, the jointed plain concrete pavement analysis without reinforcement produced a 25 cm thick concrete plate and the thickness was further analysed analytically and numerically using variations in CBR values from 2% to 6%. The deflection and tensile stress values, however, met the maximum limit required. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Improvement of clay gradation using black-beach sand

Stabilization is one method of improving soil that does not meet development requirements. This method is used to enhance the technical properties of the soil so that it can fulfill particular technical specifications. Due to the low bearing capacity of clay soil, this study was conducted to increase soil gradation using black-beach sand by adding 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% clay to the soil. Water content and specific gravity tests were performed on black-beach sand, as well as physical (water content, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, and soil grain analysis) and mechanical properties (compaction and shear strength) testing on clay soils. The black-beach sand test resulted in a water content of 2.51% and a specific gravity of 2.676. The results of the physical properties test on clay showed a decrease in the water content, specific gravity, liquid limit, plasticity index, and percentage of passing No. 200, but an increase in the plastic limit and shrinkage limit values. Clay is classified as A-7-5 by AASHTO and as CH by the USCS. The optimal water content value decreased as the maximum dry soil volume increased. The original soil shear strength test resulted in a value of 0.863 kg/cm2, a cohesion value of 0.557 kg/cm2, and an internal friction angle of 11.08°. The internal friction angle increases with the addition of black-beach sand, but the cohesiveness value decreases. Stabilization with black-beach sand can increase the gradation and bearing capacity of the soil.

This research is focused on selecting a hot asphalt mixture test method for water and temperature applied in Indonesia. The study was carried out based on the literature study of various tests that existed so far. The search results are known to the existing test method are Immersion Compression, Original Lottman, Modified Lottman, Root-Tunnicliff, Duriez, Hamburg Wheel Tracking Device, Saturation Ageing Tensile Stiffness, Highways, Indonesian National Standard (SNI), Moisture Induced Stress Tester (MIST), and Boil Test. Based on the investigation, it can be inferred that water and temperature are contributing factors to the formation of a hot asphalt mixture, as the adhesion and cohesion connections are damaged. Adhesion damage is identified using a soaking and emphasizing procedure, whereas cohesion damage is identified by modeling vehicle stresses on the sample to be examined. Apart from the potential for damage to the asphalt mixed bond, the technique selection procedure is influenced by the test duration, mechanical evaluation, climate compatibility, and tool availability. The selection process begins with making a scoring scale for each parameter, then scoring each test method, and finally adding up the scores of the five parameters. The factors can be categorized into five categories, except duration and climate adaptability. Only two types of damage are classified based on their influence on adhesion or the combination of adhesion and cohesion. The mechanical evaluation contains only three grading categories: 1, 3, and 5, with no point for tool availability. The testing process can take as little as one day or as long as four days. Based on the results of the sum of the scores for each method, it can be seen that SNI 6753-2015 is the most appropriate asphalt durability test technique for usage in Indonesia, scoring 22 points overall, followed by MIST (21 points) and Bina Marga (20 points).

The spatial phenomenon of Kin's settlements in the UNNES campus area: study of activities and the meaning of spaces

The development of campuses on the outskirts of the city is forming new satellite cities, including the Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) expanding its new campus in Sekaran Village, Gunungpati sub-district. The existence of this campus has a major impact on regional development, and affects land use. The characteristics of the countryside with local wisdom still seem to color the socio-cultural life of the people of Sekaran, and also affect the space and environment of the settlements where they live. This phenomenon indicates that there is a strong kinship among the sedentary groups. This study aims to: (1) explore the spatial phenomenon of kin's settlements; (2) revealing the activities and meaning of spaces. In order to achieve the objectives, this research uses a phenomenological approach. The results of the study illustrate that the setting of kins settlements is formed by internal aspects, namely: the location of inheritance land, orientation between dwellings, access between dwellings, kin's activities and the influence of the UNNES Campus which encourages the formation of new functions in kin's settlements that have economic value. The existence of space and activities together strengthens the meaning of shared space in kin's settlements.

Recent borehole seismic deployments conducted along the Baribis Fault in northwestern Java reveal that it may be active. In this study, we exploit these data to locate proximal earthquakes using a relative relocation technique, estimate their moment magnitudes using a spectral fitting method and compute their focal mechanisms via waveform inversion. We observe that seismicity in the eastern part of the fault is significantly higher than in the west, where a previous GPS study of the region south of Jakarta demonstrated the existence of high compression rates. These observations imply that the western Baribis Fault is locked, and that neighbouring areas, including southern Jakarta and its surroundings, may be highly vulnerable to future sizeable earthquakes when accumulated elastic strain energy is eventually released during fault rupture. Significantly, the current generation of Indonesia's national hazard maps have not considered seismicity along the Baribis Fault. Our new results therefore call for an urgent reappraisal of the seismic hazard in northwestern Java that carefully takes into account the Baribis Fault and its earthquake potential, particularly in light of its proximity to Jakarta, a megacity that lies at the heart of one of the most densely populated islands in the world.

Asphalt Porus is a flexible pavement technology that can be applied in Indonesia t have a tropical climate with high rainfall, which danger of water. One of the innovations that can be used is porous asphalt with styrofoam as polymer added material. The quality of bitumen can also be improved by using fillers in the mixture. The waste of rice husk ash is used as a filler to help the asphalt mixture improve quality and reduce environmental damage. The research is the porous asphalt mixture’s characteristics with the substitution of styrofoam into asphalt penetration of 60/70 with the variation of filler rice husk ash and rock ash. The specimens’ preparation of Optimum Asphalt Content (OAC) based on the Australian method by some parameters namely; the value of Cantabro Loss (CL), Asphalt Flow Down (AFD), Voids in Mix (VIM), and Permeability. Open-graded aggregate was used, and the substitution of styrofoam variations was 7%, 9%, and 11% with the variation fillers. The results that the Optimum Asphalt Content was 5.58%. The asphalt with Styrofoam substitution with rice husk ash (RHA) and rock ash (RA) filler of the best with the value CL, AFD, VIM, and permeability at the Styrofoam content of 7% using the filler material (RA 25% - RHA75%). Which all the parameters have required by AAPA (2004). The value of void in the mix with substitution styrofoam 7% of filler in the mixture. The increase in asphalt content is the cantabro loss value can be an increase. In other words, the mixture’s resistance to the release of grain is getting bigger, while the greater the asphalt content into the asphalt flow down the value of the mix to also increase so that the level of separation of asphalt with aggregate in the mixture is getting bigger.

This paper proposes a theoretical framework for analyzing Modified Incomplete LU (MILU) preconditioners. Considering a generalized MILU preconditioner on a weighted undirected graph with self-loops, we extend its applicability beyond matrices derived by Poisson equation solvers on uniform grids with compact stencils. A major contribution is, a novel measure, the Localized Estimator of Condition Number (LECN), which quantifies the condition number locally at each vertex of the graph. We prove that the maximum value of the LECN provides an upper bound for the condition number of the MILU preconditioned system, offering estimation of the condition number using only local measurements. This localized approach significantly simplifies the condition number estimation and provides a powerful tool or analyzing the MILU preconditioner applied to previously unexplored matrix structures. To demonstrate the usability of LECN analysis, we present three cases: (1) revisit to existing results of MILU preconditioners on uniform grids, (2) analysis of high-order implicit finite difference schemes on wide stencils, and (3) analysis of variable coefficient Poisson equations on hierarchical adaptive grids such as quadtree and octree. Groundwater-Surface Water Interactions Research: Past Trends and Future Directions

Interactions between groundwater and surface water sustain groundwater-dependent ecosystems, provide baseflow to rivers, and regulate river temperature and biogeochemical cycles, amongst many other processes. These interactions occur in freshwater environments including rivers, springs, lakes, and wetlands, and in coastal environments via tidal pumping, submarine groundwater discharge, and seawater intrusion. Here, we use a data-driven approach to explore groundwater-surface water interactions research using 20,275 journal papers published between 1970 and 2023. Analyses show that research into groundwater-surface water interactions is highly multi-disciplinary, with growing contributions from the social and biological sciences. As in the case with many research areas, the number of groundwater-surface water interactions papers is rapidly increasing with over 1200 papers published per year since 2020. Drawing on our data-driven approach and expert knowledge, we synthesise current research trends and identify critical future research directions. Despite the thousands of papers on groundwater-surface water interactions, there are still important processes that are difficult to quantify or predict at meaningful spatial scales to inform management. We see benefits in future groundwater-surface water interactions research focusing on: (1) embracing new technologies including the use of internet-of-things-based sensors and further use of uncrewed vehicles in data capture and remote sensing approaches to inform groundwater-surface water interactions at large scales, (2) capitalising on the increased computational power, availability of physically based models, and machine learning to inform hydrological and biogeochemical processes, and (3) continuing the movement towards multi-disciplinary investigations to better inform the quantification of groundwater-surface water interactions that will enable better management outcomes. © 2024, The Authors.
