Experimental study of shear strengthening by using abaca fiber as composite material of natural fiber reinforced polymer (NFRP) on reinforced concrete beam

The use of Synthetic Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) as a composite material, both external and internal to the structure, is one of the alternative materials that has been widely used for strengthening and repairing reinforced concrete structures. However, the high price is the obstacle in applying synthetic FRP materials in developing countries such as Indonesia. Utilization of natural fiber as a Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymer (NFRP) is an alternative because it is environmentally friendly and has good tensile strength. In this study, abaca fiber was used as a substitute for synthetic polymer fibers for the shear reinforcement of reinforced concrete beams. This study aims to evaluate the shear strength capacity of reinforced concrete beams and their failure behavior in the presence of shear reinforcement using NFRP. The benefit of this research is to provide an overview of the behavior of beams against shear reinforced with NFRP and later can be applied to the reinforcement and repair of reinforced concrete structures. The shear behavior of the beam reinforced with NFRP will be evaluated experimentally using a test object measuring 150x300x2200 mm with a design concrete quality of 35 MPa. Parameters used are fiber width, variation of layers, and configuration of NFRP attachment. The result shows that the addition of abaca fiber NFRP to reinforced concrete beams was able to increase the shear capacity. The increasing shear capacity of BSTV1 (25), BSTV1 (50), BSTV1 (75), BSTV2 (50), and BSTD1 (50) were 2.71%, 12.98%, 1.28%, 22.75%, and 6.65% respectively. (50)

The need for quick analysis for road pavement survey is inevitable, especially in a developing country. A new data collection method by using small format photo, which is recorded by drone is developed. The function of drone is not only for photographic purposes, but also developed to measure and record road damage. Digital aerial photogrammetric methods are developed faster than before. A small format areal imagery based on pixel size is developed for this study, so that the degree of road damage can be obtained quickly. In order to obtain a maximum pixel size to detect a maximum damage level of 1 cm, the shooting is done at a height of 24 m drone from the road surface. The result of road damage measured by measuring distance through image is then tested based on the measured sample, directly in the field with a trust level of 97.83%. These results show that the accuracy of road damage measurements made above high resolution photo images is very effective for data collection of road damage. Analysis of Condition Priority can be obtained in one day in complement with contour map and road level, while in previous time it is done within a week without contour map and level. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Indonesia is earthquake and tsunami prone areas, included Sumatera Island. Bandar Lampung is also vulnerable to earthquake and tsunami, especially Kangkung fishing village in Lampung Bay. Disaster risk reduction is very important to be implemented in the cases of earthquake and tsunami, which can save more life and build resilience in facing the hazard. This research aimed to study how the knowledge, awareness, and resilience of people in Kangkung fishing village can strengthen the earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. This research conducted by quantitative methods. Survey and interview of 53 respondents were conducted as well as data collecting approached by purposive sampling. The results found that there is little knowledge and awareness of people in Kangkung fishing village of the hazard of earthquake and tsunami. Therefore, this research proposed a model of "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction. It is a comprehensive and sustainable model of how people take a part in disaster risk reduction by intensive participatory. Conclusion of this research emphasized that disaster risk reduction is a big matter in marginalized society such as people in Kangkung fishing village. The "Community-Based Resilience Strategy"Model of earthquake and tsunami disaster risk reduction that may increase the knowledge and awareness to become more resilience. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a type of dementia that leads to memory loss and impairment, which afects patients’ lives badly. It is not curable yet, but its progression can be slowed down if detected at earlier stages. In this research study, we propose a transfer learning-based convolutional neural network (CNN) model to classify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) into one of four stages of Alzheimer's disease. One of the major limitations of the deep learning-based classification model is the non-availability of healthcare datasets related to AD. The widely used Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset has a major class imbalance issue. We propose a generative adversarial network (GAN) based data augmentation technique to overcome the data imbalance. This promotes the investigation of applying GANs to generate synthetic samples for minority classes in Alzheimer's disease datasets to enhance classification performance. The results show the progression in the overall classification process of AD.

To use unicellular microalgae to remove waste nutrients from brewery wastewater while converting them into algal biomass has been explored but high-cost treatment and low-value biomass associated with current technologies have prevented this concept from further attempts. In this study, a filamentous microalga Tribonema aequale was introduced and the alga can grow vigorously in brewery wastewater and algal biomass concentration could be as high as 6.45g L-1 which can be harvested by a cost-effective filtration method. The alga together with autochthonous bacteria removed majority of waste nutrients from brewery wastewater. Specifically, 85.39% total organic carbon (TOC), 79.53% total dissolved nitrogen (TN), 93.38% ammonia (NH3-N) and 71.33% total dissolved phosphate (TP) in brewery wastewater were rapidly removed by co-cultivation of T. aequale and autochthonous bacteria. Treated wastewater met the national wastewater discharge quality, and resulting algal biomass contained large amounts of high-value products chrysolaminarin, palmitoleic acid (PLA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). It is anticipated that reduced cost of algal harvesting coupled with value-added biomass could make T. aequale as a promising candidate for brewery wastewater treatment and resource utilization. © 2023, The Authors. The use of deep learning in medical image classification has become an important study in the past few years. The proper use of this method, however, is still hindered by many problems, one of it being the imbalance of dataset available for training which resulted in small-set database. In this study, the effect of noise-based augmentation on the performance of deep learning based classification will be studied. The noises which were used for the augmentation method were Perlin-noise and Gaussian noise. The modality of medical image used in this study is X-ray. 174 X-ray images (87 cancer, 87 normal) were used in this study and will be classified by using transfer learning from previously trained deep learning architecture. The deep learning architecture used was vgg-19. The images were divided into two groups, 138 (69 cancer, 69 normal) images were used for training phase and 36 (18 cancer, 18 normal) were images used for testing phase. Three deep learning models were used for the classification tasks, the first one was retrained to classify the original images, the second one was retrained by using mix of original images and images with Perlin-noise, and the third one was retrained by using mix of original images and images with Gaussian noise. The results showed that the three models returned similar accuracy of 0.8 which indicate that the use of noise-based augmentation can increase the performance of deep learning in classifying medical images with small set training database. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The needs of having strong and light material for many construction is increasing. Aluminum is one of materials that fulfill this requirement with other advantages such as corrosion resistant and easily formed. Generally, hardness of aluminum and its alloys is lower than ferrous metal such as iron and steel. Aluminum hardness improvement can be conducted by heat treatment namely artificial aging. Artificial aging in aluminum alloy type 2024 T3 in this study was conducted in 2 phases that is solution treatment in 500 °C for 1 hour and continued with artificial aging process in 180 °C by holding time 2, 4 and 6 hours. From the conducted research, it was found that there was hardness improvement on aluminum type 2024 T3 in line with the increasing of aging time. The gained microstructure was getting smooth which means the precipitation hardening process was getting perfect. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The aim of Nickel-Tungsten coatings on the material of carbon steel is to improve the wear resistance of the material. However, with the elevated contact temperature due to friction force in the surface area of sliding may alter the wear resistance of Nickel-Tungsten layers. If the elevated temperature is quite high to reduce the hardness performance of Nickel-Tungsten layers, the layers may be degraded more quickly. In this work, Nickel-Tungsten was deposited on the surface of medium carbon steel in the process of flame powder spray coating with layer thickness of about 0.2 mm. The wear test was conducted using linear reciprocating ball-on-plat with varying surface temperature of about 30°C up to about 250°C. The wear rate and wear mechanism of Nickel-Tungsten layer is investigated. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Mandai, a traditional fermented delicacy, is produced from the inner peel of the cempedak fruit (Artocarpus champeden). This unique food is a culinary heritage of the Banjar ethnic group residing in Kalimantan, and is part of Indonesia’s rich collection of traditional fermented foods. This study aimed to analyze mandai by examining its fermentation processes and chemical and nutritional composition. It also discusses the potential and prospects of mandai development in the future. Through a narrative literature review, this study synthesized insights into mandai, emphasizing its significance as a functional food with rich antioxidant and probiotic properties. This review also shows that processing mandai through starter-induced fermentation can improve its quality and standards. This study serves as an important foundation for future mandai research by emphasizing the functional benefits and processing methods of mandai. © The Author(s) 2025.
