This paper aims to examine the potential of natural coco fibre to be utilized as a wall covering in building construction for sun radiation protection. engineering innovation in building construction to control the building's temperature is important. Lowering the building's room temperature can be carried out by modifying the wall construction materials. Thus, the usage of an air conditioner which is not environmentally friendly can be reduced. The wall modification can give more protection and dampen the sun's heat, hence the thermal comfort can be obtained. Natural materials, moreover, can be used in the wall modification to reduce the room temperature. In this study, a comparative analysis was carried out between two materials: (1) the coco fibre coated with cement mixture;(2) the mixture of cement and sand, both were used as materials to plaster the wall. The cement mixture acted to bind the compacted coco fibre sheets. The material was evaluated after the cement mixture had been hardened. The test was carried out by providing heat on one side and measuring the temperature on the other side of the material. The results were significant between the two materials. This indicates the potential of coco fibre as a heat insulation in the wall construction materials that can minimize solar thermal radiation into the room. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Lighting design is one of the priorities in designing buildings. Natural lighting can reduce energy consumption in buildings. Aesthetic levels are the basis of the planning concept, but need to pay attention to the concept of using natural lighting, in order to realize the energy-efficient building design. The purpose of the study was to determine how the level of illuminance affects the opening area, depth of space and height of the building. Quantitative research method is to analysis statistical data from measurements of illuminance levels in space. The results of the study concluded that the level of illuminance in the meeting room of the Center of Technology building in Hasanuddin University exceeded the illuminance standard. The extent of openings in the building envelope affects the illuminance level in space. Natural light distribution affects the height of the building's floor and the depth of space. Based on this conclusion, it is expected that in designing a building it is necessary to pay attention to the building facade, so that the distribution of natural light is not too high into the building and to avoid negative effects such as glare, high brightness and contrast. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

In order to overcome the disadvantages of conventional method, innovations on how to produce coconut oil were applied with the technique of PENDAWA (Pendayagunaan Asam Jawa). Coconut oil comes from coconut milk which is the substance between oil and water (emulsion). So to get coconut oil, acid is needed as an emulgator to break down emulsifying substances. In this case, Tamarind is used because it is cheap, available, contains a lot of antioxidants, and is efficacious. Coconut oil contains medium chain saturated fatty acids, namely MCT (Medium-chain triglycerides) where MCT provides extraordinary health enhancing properties. We compared three types of coconut oil, namely coconut oil in the traditional way, coconut oil with the addition of tamarind, and packaging oil on the market. The result was coconut oil with the Pendawa method very good in quality and quality with FFA 0.0067% and peroxide number of 1.5 mg ek/kg. In conclusion, this oil production with the PENDAWA method is very effective, efficient, high in quality, and provides high profit for the industry that wants to produce it. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study aims to provide knowledge in order to save electricity consumption. The use of electrical energy is recorded at KWH meters. Saving electricity means limiting the use of electrical energy according to need. The use of electrical energy is based on the use of electrical power. Technically, this dimmer serves to regulate the use of electrical power. Some electrical equipment has been equipped with dimmers to regulate the operation of the equipment in accordance with the user's want, yet there are still many electrical equipment that is not equipped with dimmers. This is a problem in the efforts to save electricity. The method used in this study is applying passive components in electricity such as inductors, capacitors and resistors. These passive components are arranged to be used as filter circuits. With a 21 mH inductor with an air core, Farad's 12.5 micro capacitor, and 4.7 ohm resistor can be made as a passive filter that is installed before electric loads. The use of this filter circuit can save the use of electricity up to 15% at a load current of 2 amperes. Thus, electricity bill payments can be reduced by up to 15%. In the future, this research can be continued to improve the efficiency of electricity consumption by modifying passive filters. © 2019 Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Chromatic Acclimating Synechococcus Dominate in Mesoscale Eddies

Mesoscale eddies are found almost everywhere in global ocean. They can last for weeks to months with scales up to over 100 km and play important roles in global biogeochemical cycles. In this study, we analyzed the phylogenetic and pigment type composition of Synechococcus in a cyclonic eddy (CE, cold eddy) and an anticyclonic eddy (ACE, warm eddy) located in western South China Sea in summer, 2018. Nutrients pumping enhanced Synechococcus abundance markedly in the upper euphotic layers of CE. High diversity of both phylogenetic clades and pigment types of Synechococcus were discovered in the sampling area, with clear composition difference between CE and ACE. The chromatic acclimating pigment type (PT) 3dA dominated in CE while PT 3dB dominated in ACE. The potential weak chromatic acclimator PT 3eA contributed a significant proportion in both CE and ACE. To better understand the difference of PT composition in CE and ACE, we further investigated the phylogenetic composition of Synechococcus in CE and ACE. Clade CRD 1, which were the main strains in upwelling regions, were dominant in CE, where cooler and nutrient rich subsurface water was pumped to the upper layers. Warm water adapted clade II and clade III dominated in ACE. Our study, for the first time, indicated that chromatic acclimation was important in shaping the vertical profile of Synechococcus community in mesoscale eddies of the subtropical oceans. © 2024 The Authors.

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) has a spirit to become a Conservation and International Reputation University is realized through strategic missions. One of the conservation-oriented implementation programs is H-BAT (Green, Clean and Healthy) program. In its implementation, there is a problem, namely the achievement of H-BAT program has not been maximized during the last 3 years in assessment. The objectives of this research are: (1) to identify of the potential and character of environmental support in the work units; (2) to determine the achievement of the indication of a green campus based on the assessment indicators on H-BAT program. This research was carried out in four stages: (1) Data collection; (2) Spatial data processing; (3) Non Spatial data processing; (4) Analysis (ecological, technical standards); The results achieved in June 2020 are as follows: FT got 87,50%, FE got 85,87%, FMIPA got 81,52%, BUHK got79,49%, FIP got 73,91%, LP3 got 69,23%, LP2M got 63,46%, FIS got 60,33%,PPS got 57,07%, FIK got 56,52%, FH got 52,72%, FBS got 49,46%, TIK got 40,38%, BPB got 34,62%, Library got 30,13%, Archive got 17,31%. From these results, it can be seen that there is a lack of maximum achievement due to, among others, the lack of guidance and technical assistance in the management of the unit. So it is necessary to complete governance guidelines and technical assistance that are more intensive in unit governance to achieve the goals of UNNES as a green campus.

We investigated the optimum hand-picking time of Nagano Purple, a rare Japanese table grape variety. The color sensitivity between pure red–purple–black and pure purple–black makes it difficult for farmers to harvest these fruits at the right time while maintaining high sweetness level. We manually extracted 13 color parameters, namely, X, Y, Z, x, y, L*, a*, b*, L, a, b, C*, and h, from 355 grape skin samples using a colorimeter, which is a time-consuming and expensive process. In addition, we developed a 15-layer shallow long short-term memory (LSTM) and bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) neural network, namely, GrapeNet_Lv1, with a learnable parameter of 1.39E+06. This network is compact and requires low computational cost for training. Furthermore, it has the ability to prevent the problems of vanishing gradient and overfitting. The combination of all the 13 aforementioned parameters yielded promising results in predicting color and sweetness levels, with test accuracies of 0.83 and 0.76, respectively. In the prediction of color level, our proposed network GrapeNet_Lv1 achieves a high validation accuracy of 0.92, F1 score of 0.88, recall of 0.87, low validation loss of 0.39, and RMSE of 0.31. However, in the prediction of sweetness level, GrapeNet_Lv1 achieves a relatively low validation accuracy of 0.79, F1 score of 0.70, recall of 0.69, high validation loss of 0.72, and RMSE of 0.33. Further research can help improve the accuracy. GrapeNet_Lv1 can be applied to other crops, where, predicting the whose optimal hand-picking time is difficult to predict based on color recognition. Vocational graduates supposedly have the competencies following the purpose of vocational education: preparing medium-skilled labor in a particular area that corresponded with the industrial needs. The 21st-century learning, among others, was signified with a learning process that optimizing the brain function. In the 21st-century, businesses and industries tend to demand skilled labors in digital literacy, technology literacy, and human literacy. Thus, vocational education should be able to innovate and create to respond to the challenge and opportunity from the 21st-century implication through revitalizing the vocational education, involving learning system, education units, learners, educators, and educational staffs. A suitable learning system for the 21st-century is a life-based learning model. Life-based learning in vocational education could be performed through industrial practice, industrial class, and teaching factory activities. These three approaches aimed to bring the learning activities closer with real-life work at the workplace through field practices. With life-based learning at the real workplace, students would develop a discipline, responsible, teamwork, and work culture habits as provisions after finishing the vocational education.

Carrageenan is a sulfated polysaccharide that demonstrates excellent film-forming properties. In contrast, many hydroxyl and sulfate groups in their structures produce a carrageenan film highly hydrophilic and demonstrate comparatively poor mechanical. Therefore, it is necessary to blend Carrageenan with other biopolymers to improve the film's mechanical properties. This paper aims to study the characterization of the composite film by combining ĸ Carrageenan and Chitosan using CaCl2 and KCl cross-link agents. The composite film product was characterized by measuring its moisture content, solubility, swelling degree, water vapour permeability, oxygen permeability, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The result shows that the addition of Chitosan could improve the properties of ĸ carrageenan film. CaCl2 and KCl cross-link agents reduce moisture content, swelling, solubility, water vapour permeability, and oxygen permeability of uncrosslinked film, which is suitable for food packaging.

The use of phase-change material on a thermosyphon solar water heater: Continuous and gradual discharging characteristics

Water use as a heat storage material in solar water heaters (SWH) has disadvantages, including its low energy density, which requires a large volume of thermal energy storage. Phase-change material (PCM) is a latent type of heat storage material that has the advantage of being a high energy density. Therefore, PCM is quite interesting to be applied to SWH systems. In the operation of SWH, it is necessary to know the characteristics of hot water usage. This paper aimed to determine the characteristics of a continuous and gradual discharging method on SWH that applies PCM. This study used a thermosyphon type of SWH. The tank was placed horizontally on the top side of the collector with a volume of 60 liters. Twenty-four cylindrical capsules containing paraffin wax were inserted into the tank. Thermocouples were installed on the waterside and the PCM side. Continuous and gradual methods were carried out in the discharging experiment. Experiments using a continuous discharging method given information that water temperature decrease continuously in the tank. Experiments with a gradual discharging method showed PCM’s contribution, which can transfer thermal energy to the water. The gradual discharging method explained that the SWH system produced hot water that can be used for bathing as many as five people every day with water temperatures of 45 °C at an average solar radiation intensity of 514.89 W/m2. The use of PCM makes a positive contribution to the thermal energy storage in the tank.
