Stabilization of Soft Clay from Bukit Rawi using Portland Composite Cement

One method for stabilizing soft clay is to mix it with cement. Portland composite cement (PCC) is a cement produced by grinding together portland slag and gypsum with one or more inorganic materials that is suitable for stabilization of soft soils. The purpose of this study was to mix soft clay from Bukit Rawi, Central Kalimantan with PCC, which was then tested for unconfined compression strength (UCS) and the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) to see if it could be used as a road subgrade. Soft soil from Bukit Rawi was mixed with PCC with percentages of 6%, 8%, 10%, and 12% on a dry weight basis. The mixture was tested by Proctor standard compaction to obtain the optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. At these optimum conditions, UCS and CBR tests were carried out. The findings reveal that adding PCC to Bukit Rawi soil enhances UCS and CBR, which were previously 3.47% of CBR and 0.67kg/cm2 of UCS. The addition of PCC with a level of 2‒3% is planned for field application, because it is considered capable of fulfilling the requirements as a subgrade layer with a CBR of 15%. Furthermore, 12 percent PCC is required in the combination as a foundation (minimum 20kg/cm2 of UCS).

Many regions in Indonesia are still lack of electricity due to geographical condition in the form of archipelago, including Tanjung Balai Karimun District, in Kepulauan Riau Province, Indonesia. Therefore, using local renewable resources to fulfill load demand is better than relying on utility grid. The potential of using biomass waste, for instance oil palm and coconut residues, as renewable energy resources should be an optional decision to make improvement, not only for the reliability of existing power system itself but also to meet the load demand generally available in every region of Indonesia. In 2016, Karimun Regency in Riau Islands Province as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is growing rapidly in economic and facing electrical energy crisis simultaneously. Addressing this problem, the government has taken an action by making amendment on the policy that consciously planned to increase the capacity of power plants, in particular Oil and Gas Power Plants (OGPP) in the period of 2018-2024. The objective of this study is to evaluate the reliability of Tanjung Balai Karimun power system based on its Loss of Load Probability (LOLP) index designed during the planning period of power plant addition. Then, the value of new LOLP index was recalculated after integrating new system of Biomass Power Plant (BPP). Based on LOLP calculation using recursive method, LOLP index in 2018 decreased from 3.63 days/year to 2.05 days/year, reflecting quality improvement of the power plant reliability. Integrating BPP into the existing power plant has powered up the capacity of 2.8 MW according to the availability of oil palm and coconut biomass waste. © 2019 IEEE.

Cianjur is one of the renowned rice producers, particularly with the presence of Pandanwangi rice that can be grown in the Cianjur area. Pandanwangi has become one of Cianjur City's icons, the rice supremacy created by Pandanwangi Cianjur's tenacity and distinctive scent (pandanus fragrance). The Interest of pandanwangi was very high, both within the town of Cianjur and outside the town of Cianjur, but this was inversely proportional to the desires of the groups of farmers who appeared to prefer to plant rice other than Pandanwangi, on the grounds that the planting of Pandanwangi had a long harvest and that the likelihood of crop failure was also very high. Problems with information flows that are not well integrated between farmers' groups, farmers' group organizations, and the Agriculture Department in adjusting land details, planting time, planting location, estimating total harvest and harvesting time. To solve this problem, a framework must be built that can integrate the information needed for Pandanwangi Cianjur Harvest Prediction with Pandanwangi farmers' regional analysis based on geographic information system technology, using Google Maps Service.

Phytoremediation of phosphate using Typha sp. and Echinodorus palaefolius

Jember Regency is an agricultural area. Giving fertilizer is one of the agricultural activities. It usually contains a phosphate. If fertilizer is used too much, it will cause environmental pollution. The level of phosphate pollutants increase that can cause eutrophication. Phytoremediation is a plants utilization technology to reduce pollutants. This study aims to determine the effect of Typha sp. and Echinodorus palaefolius to reduce phosphate levels from fertilizer residues. The research reactor was a batch. The reactor used bed evapotranspiration system. Phytoremediation test analysis was carried out every two days for 8 days. Typha sp. and E. palaefolius on the day 8th observation levels phosphate were down by 90,33% and 92,86%. The most efficient in this experiment was E. palaefolius.

The catalytic thermal conversion of carbon dioxide is essential for carbon capture, storage, and utilization, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions and potentially stimulating future economic activities. Zeolite Y, ZSM-5, BEA, and A were synthesized using the hydrothermal technique from Indonesian kaolin to examine the potential use of zeolite as a catalyst without metal nanoparticles. In the absence of metal, catalytic activity for CO₂ methanation relies solely on textural properties and basicity-acidity. Zeolite Y exhibits the highest CO₂ conversion at 36.64 % and attained 100 % of CH₄ selectivity at 400 °C. The exceptional CO₂ conversion of zeolite Y relies on a high basicity level of 1.02 mmol/g, as shown by CO₂-TPD analysis, and a relatively low acid site concentration of 1.48 mmol/g, as determined by NH₃-TPD analysis. ZSM-5, BEA, and zeolite A, demonstrated CO₂ conversion of 29.85 %, 23.86 %, and 12.15 %, respectively. Stability studies revealed ZSM-5 maintains methane (CH₄) selectivity of 94 %, which is only slightly lowered by 6 % for 30 hours, while zeolite Y achieved 90 % selectivity for 26 hours. The presence of mesopores in zeolite ZSM-5 reduced coke or carbon production, maintaining crystalline framework. © 2024 The Authors

This study presents a new method for assessing bacterial leaf blight (BLB) in paddy fields using multispectral UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) data through patch fragmentation analysis. Unlike traditional pixel-based methods, which often fail to capture the spatial context, our approach treats pixels as objects and analyzes their spatial relationships to evaluate BLB severity. We used six patch fragmentation metrics derived from binarized vegetation indices to classify BLB damage scores using a random forest algorithm. This method achieves high accuracy (AUC of 0.938) with a 0.5-meter sampling window, offering a more detailed assessment than conventional pixel-based analysis. This study highlights the benefits of incorporating the spatial context and improving BLB monitoring and management. This innovative approach allows agricultural stakeholders to gain valuable insights into the extent and severity of BLB disease infestation, enabling targeted intervention strategies for disease management and mitigation. © 2024, The Authors. The critical minerals industries in Indonesia may pose possible environmental and human health risks due to the release of pollutants into soil, water, and air, as well as the use of materials and energy. This study investigates the possible environmental and human health impacts of Indonesia's nickel, gold, copper, tin, and bauxite mining and processing industries. This study utilizes the latest version of the OpenLCA software, version 2.0, in combination with the Ecoinvent 3.8 database. To evaluate potential environmental consequences and health effects on humans, CML-IA Baseline and Environmental Priority Strategies (EPS) are employed in product development. The EPS system was developed utilizing a hierarchical methodology with the objective of furnishing the product developer with data regarding the financial impact of human health impairment resulting from a particular product development. The production of one tonne of gold, nickel, bauxite, tin, and copper results in the emission of 7.34.E+07, 4.61.E+04, 3.10.E+04, 1.02.E+04, 8.01.E+03 kg CO₂ eq/t, respectively, contributing to global warming. This production is associated with asthma cases of 7.79.E+01 (gold industry), 2.21.E−03 (copper industry), 1.81.E−03 (tin industry), 9.21.E−04 (nickel industry), and 4.71.E−06 (bauxite industry) Personyears/t. Electricity consumption and the release of carbon dioxide are the main factors contributing to global warming. The primary cause of asthma cases is the utilization of fuel oil and electricity. Power plant chimneys can employ various technologies, such as cyclones, bag filters, and scrubbers, to mitigate the release of polluting gas emissions. The critical mineral industry must prioritize handling and governing of steam power facilities to minimize their negative effects on the environment and human health. © 2024 The Authors

Feasibility study of heavy equipment using sensivity analysis

Heavy equipment investment for contractor companies is a long-term investment that can be used in various fields, such as construction projects, mining projects, and can also be leased to other parties. Before investing in heavy equipment, a feasibility study is needed to determine whether an investment is feasible or not. The feasibility study for heavy equipment investment in this research using net present value methods. The parameter assumptions in the feasibility study can change and affect the investment feasibility, so a sensitivity analysis is needed. The sensitivity analysis in this research was carried out on the parameters of fuel prices, operating costs other than fuel costs, salvage value, and working hours of heavy equipment. Based on the results of the sensitivity analysis, it is known that the parameters of fuel prices affect the feasibility of heavy equipment investment, especially in excavator and dump trucks. Both of these equipments have the shortest fuel price sensitivity range value, which is below 60%. The working hours of equipment parameters affects the feasibility of heavy equipment investment, especially excavators. If the working hours of excavator are less than 1.715 hours per year, then excavator investment is not feasible. The operational cost parameters other than fuel cost and salvage value don’t affect the investment feasibility of heavy equipment. The results of the sensitivity analysis also show that the working hours is the most influential parameters in heavy equipment investment compared to other parameters.

The global energy demand has increased interest in the development of new technologies that lead to alternative, low-cost energy with minimal environmental impact. A promising technology is the fuel cell (Fuel Cell, FC) because it allows the production of electrical energy from chemical energy. A variation of the FC is the microbial fuel cell (Microbial Fuel Cell, MFC), which consists of the production of electrical energy by the metabolic reactions of microorganisms when in contact with a substrate. This work evaluated the electric power generation potential of MFC configured using as a substrate and source of bacteria a mixture of soil, sand, organic fertilizer, and ash in a proportion of 3:2:1:1/2, on which native plants (Torenia fournieri, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, Pentas lanceolata, Nephrolepis exaltata, Begonia semperflorens, or Asplenium nidus) were planted to promote the exchange of organic chemical species and nutrients for generating renewable electrical energy. This variation is constituted as a system of fuel cells with microorganisms and plants (Plant Microbial Fuel Cell, PMFC), whose efficiency was determined by measuring the variation of potential between the cell electrodes, finding variation with all the plants used. The highest voltage obtained in the PMFCs was 0.607 V for the Begonia semperflorens plant. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Conventional contracts are one of the road maintenance contracts based on the number of jobs measured and paid at an agreed level for different work items or referred to as unit price contracts. Meanwhile, performance-based road maintenance determines the minimum conditions of roads, bridges, and traffic assets that must be fulfilled by contractors. National road maintenance in several developed countries has successfully used integrated contracts, performance-based contracts. This is followed by the developing countries that previously had problems with the quality of national roads in which they were unable to provide the desired level of service. This performance contract prioritizes products and it is up to the contractor how to achieve this. Therefore, the choice of design, application of technology, innovation, process, and management are all determined by the contractors. This allocates higher risks to contractors compared to traditional contracts. But at the same time, it opens opportunities to increase margins where increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of design, process, technology, and management can reduce costs to achieve established standard performance. This study uses simulations to obtain the duration of fair and optimal contracts for the government and contractor. Duration 5-7 years is determined a duration that can provide benefits for both parties. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
