Improving the environmental performance of palm oil industry through the utilization of empty oil palm bunches as organic fertilizer and biochar for soil amendment

The palm oil industry plays a very important role in the Indonesian economy, as it contributes significantly to state revenue and employment. However, this industry also faces serious challenges related to its environmental impacts. Intensive crude palm oil (CPO) produces various forms of waste in large quantities, such as solid, gas, and liquid waste, which pollute the environment if not managed properly. One of the main wastes from the CPO industry is empty fruit bunches (EFB), which amount to around 23–28 % of the fresh fruit processed. This study aims to analyze the environmental impacts of palm oil mills using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach and evaluate the potential for improvements by utilizing EFB as base material for organic fertilizer and biochar as a soil amendment. The research was conducted at three palm oil mills in Indonesia. Data processing uses OpenLCA software version 2.3 combined with the Ecoinvent 3.9.1 database. The results of the study indicate that the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions comes from the use of synthetic fertilizers. The use of synthetic fertilizers can be reduced significantly by applying organic fertilizers and biochar produced from EFB. On average, the use of synthetic fertilizers per hectare can be reduced by using organic fertilizers or biochar by approximately 75.27 % and 34.85 % respectively. As a result, synthetic fertilizer input costs and the greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced. © 2025 The Authors

Construction project is one of the activities consisting of risks. The stakeholders involved as the implementing partners must recognize the various risks occurring during the construction processes. The conditions needs to be early identified to prevent and minimize the risks. One of the risks is construction addition budget or financial risk. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of financial risk variables on project construction budget of building infrastructure. The data collected in this study were primary data, namely questionnaires, and secondary data. The data was processed by using Spearman rank correlation method. The output of this study explained that there are 4 (four) correlations between financial risk variable and project construction budget. The material factor (X2) had strong correlation to the project construction budget.

The use of Cyrene™ as an alternative non-toxic solvent to produce a PVDF-based ultrafiltration membrane was investigated in this study. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as organic additives to explore its ability to improve membrane hydrophilicity. The additives were introduced into the casting solution via phase inversion with a combined non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) and evaporation-induced phase separation (EIPS) technique. The prepared membranes were characterized to examine its morphology, mechanical properties, and filtration performance. The results show that the addition of PEG and PVP has proven able to improve the membrane hydrophilicity with the lowest contact angle of 76.81° achieved from the addition of PEG with concentration 3 wt%. However, the nascent membranes were not adequate enough, in terms of its mechanical properties, to undergo performance tests due to its very brittle nature. The overall results from this study demonstrate a great potential as a proposed method of utilizing Cyrene™ as a choice of green solvent to fabricate PVDF-based ultrafiltration membrane with the incorporation of PEG and PVP as organic additives. © 2023 The Authors

Background: The prevalence of atrial fibrillation (AFib) continues to increase globally, posing a significant risk for serious cardiovascular complications, such as ischemic stroke and thromboembolism. Smartwatch single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) can be a practical and accurate early detection tool for AFib. Objective: The aim of this study was to fill the research gap in evaluating the accuracy and interpretability of smartwatch ECG for early AFib detection. Methods: Data derived from indexed literature in the Scopus, Scilit, PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, IEEE, and Cochrane Library databases (as of June 1, 2024) were systematically screened and extracted. The quantitative synthesis was performed using a two-level mixed-effects logistic regression model, as well as a proportional analysis with Freeman-Tukey double transformation on a restricted maximum-likelihood model. Results: The sensitivity and specificity of smartwatch ECG in algorithmic readings were 86% and 94%, respectively. In manual readings, the sensitivity and specificity reached 96% and 95%, respectively. In a brand-specific subgroup analysis, the algorithmic reading reached a summary area under the curve (sAUC) of 96%, while another brand achieved the highest sAUC of 98% in manual reading. The level of manual interpretability was relatively high with Cohen's Kappa of 0.83, but 3% of ECG results were difficult to read manually. Conclusion: This study shows that smartwatch ECG is able to detect AFib with high accuracy, especially through manual reading by trained medical personnel. Energy in Indonesia is increasing rapidly every year in line with economic involvement, and human growth that is getting more and more energy is not fulfilled every year. Indonesia is among the most energy users because of its population; this is what drives the government to accelerate the use of renewable energy such as solar. This is related to its use, which can help many people who live in cities and remote areas such as; Electricity in households, public facilities, offices, electricity is said to be the most environmentally friendly. This research was conducted in Central Java by using descriptive qualitative methods and using research and development (R&D) methods. The technique used in this study is a qualitative expressive analysis technique. The resultant solution is to be able to meet the increasing electricity needs of the community, the use of renewable energy in the city that does not hurt the environment. This research produces renewable energy that can be used as a solution to solving the electrical energy crisis at an affordable cost and can increase the independence of the community so that it does not depend on government electricity supply and improve environmentally-friendly behavior.

In general, small-scale gold mining activities that are spread throughout Indonesia practicing amalgamation technique. The amalgamation process in the mining activities can result in environmental degradation due to tailing waste containing mercury that are discharged into the environment and will distributed and bioaccumulated through food chain. Mercury exposure to human can give a chronic effect. Measuring mercury concentration in biomarkers such as nail and hair is a method to indicate the mercury poisoning level. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze mercury concentrations in nail and hair as chronic exposure biomarkers. Besides, we also conducted Human Biomonitoring (HBM) analysis to assess mercury intoxication in the communities. Moreover, we analyzed mercury concentrations in water, rice, fish, and food crops samples to understand their association with mercury concentrations in nail and hair through a Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake (PTWI) analysis. This research was conducted in 4 districts in Indonesia which has a significant number of small-scale gold mining activities. The results showed that the maximum concentration of T-Hg in the nail and hair of the workers was 58.48 μg/g and 55.97 μg/g, respectively. Based on HBM analysis, in several districts, more than 60% of the workers has been intoxicated by mercury. Meanwhile, Average Daily Intake (ADI) and PTWI were significantly correlated with concentration mercury in the nail and hair. Mercury concentrations in worker's hair was significantly correlated with working experience. We identified that the age and residence duration were the major predictor of concentration mercury in nail and hair, respectively. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

The Kertosono-Kediri toll gate is currently under construction and operated in 2021. This toll gate is the entrance of vehicles that move from the industrial area of Mojokerto, Kertosono. For exit access this toll gate serves vehicles through the Maron Kediri toll gate, and the Sonoagung Pambon toll gate. If the toll booths operated are not in accordance with the amount of vehicle flow, it can cause poor vehicle traffic performance. The purpose of this study was to the optimal number of the gate in serving toll user transactions. The method in this study uses the number of optimal gate rules carried out by organizing data based on variable values and parameters traffic intensity per lane in the toll-gate section. These variables include the average number of vehicles received per hour and the average number of vehicles received per hour. Based on the analysis shows the number of toll booths for the Maron Kediri toll gate with 95 units/hour as many as 4 gates, 189 units/hour requires 8 gates, and 284 units/hour requires 10 gates. The Sonoagung Prambon toll gate with 118 units/hour as many as 4 gates, 236 units/hour requires 8 gates, and 353 units/hour requires 10 gates.

Water quality indices (WQI) using STORET method has been used to assess rainwater quality in the Bandung urban regions, based on monitoring data at three locations (Coblong, Sumur Bandung, and Buah Batu). Rainwater samples were analyzed by detecting pH, SO42-, NO3-, Cl-, and heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn) compared with Indonesian Government Regulation No. 82 Year 2001. Rainwater quality showed polluted based on the parameters of the water quality indices analysis using the Class I and Class II criteria. Rainwater quality in Bandung urban region were lightly polluted (Coblong) and moderately polluted (Sumur Bandung and Buah Batu). Rainwater can potentially become a water sources alternative for domestic use and urban farming in Bandung urban region, but it requires further treatment for better quality. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Homemade micro-CT equipment has been successfully developed in the Physics Laboratory of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES). The micro-CT was tested and could be used properly for non-destructive testing (NDT) using a phantom as the object. However, the application of the micro-CT for biological samples has not been investigated. Therefore, in this work, an investigation of the homemade micro-CT for biological samples was done. Tilapia fish was used an object. The fish was exposed to the X-ray using exposure factors of 45 kV, 32 mA, and 0.08 s. The object was rotated with rotation angle range of 0°-360° with increment of 1.40625° and the images at every rotation angle increment was recorded. The three-dimensional (3D) image was then reconstructed from the collection of the two-dimensional (2D) images obtained during rotation. The quality of the images was then analyzed using contrast to noise ratio method (CNR). The results showed that the highest CNR was obtained at the image taken with rotation angle of 315° which was 81.163. Therefore, it can be concluded that the homemade micro-CT equipment could be used for biological sample and can be further applied in other applications such as CT-scan.

Information technology plays an essential role in the business world because it may affect the operations of the organization within the organization that also uses information technology to provide information. One of the departments that use information technology is the Information engineering Department of Musamus Merauke University, which is used to provide information related to the Department of Information engineering. But in the use of information technology is still flawed. Therefore, it is necessary to have a standard in information technology management to measure overall standards and governance in information technology management, ie using COBIT. Based on this study, we will design an information technology management model for the Department of Information engineering. Control objectives for information and related technologies (COBIT) are 4 (4) primary domains, including domains, planning, and organization (PO), acquisition and implementation (AI), transmission and support (DS) and tracking. And evaluating (ME) in research. This will use two domains, namely the delivery domain and support (DS) and monitoring and evaluation (ME) by adjusting the problems and requirements of the information engineering department in the arrangement. Information technology support for information technology service processes and support for monitoring and evaluation of information technology, the results showed that the level of maturity of information technology supervision in the information engineering department is at level 2. Therefore, information technology in the engineering department Information must be updated to the expected level. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
