Biosorption of chromium by live and dead cells of Bacillus nitratireducens isolated from textile effluent

Bacillus nitratireducens was isolated from textile effluent and showed high tolerance to chromium (Cr), reaching up to a 1000 mg/L MIC value. This research was aimed at utilizing biosorbents from live and dead cells of B. nitratireducens to remove Cr from an aqueous solution. A batch biosorption test was performed, and mechanisms analysis was approached by an adsorption-desorption test, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis. Cr removal by dead cells in 25, 50, and 100 mg/L of Cr were 58.99 ± 0.7%, 69.8 ± 0.2%, and 82.87 ± 0.11%, respectively, while that by live cells was 73.08 ± 1.9%, 80.27 ± 6.33%, and 86.17 ± 1.93%, respectively. Live cells showed significantly higher Cr removal and adsorption capacities as compared to dead cells. In all concentrations, absorption contributed more than adsorption to the Cr removal by both live and dead cells. Absorption of Cr was subjected to occur due to passive mechanisms in dead cells while involving some active mechanisms in live cells. SEM-EDS confirmed the detection of Cr on the cell surface, while FTIR revealed the shifting of some peaks after the biosorption test, suggesting interactions between Cr and functional groups. Further TEM analysis is suggested to be conducted as a future approach to reveal the inner structure of cells and confirm the involvement of absorption mechanisms. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

A digital elevation model (DEM) is a topographic representation of a bare surface, usually referring to the Earth's surface. DEMs have been used for flood assessment, landside hazard detection, soil properties' quantification, road and highway planning, etc. Recently, DEMs generated using small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have shown potential in transportation infrastructure inspection. In this study, we evaluated the performance of sUAS-collected DEM data to detect airfield pavement distresses. Natural-color red-green-blue (RGB) data were collected from both Portland cement concrete (PCC) and asphalt concrete (AC) pavements at three airports with UAS. The data were processed to generate an RGB optical orthophoto using close-range photogrammetry, and one product of that process was a DEM representing the airfield pavement in three-dimensional space. The resolution of the generated DEMs varied from 2.8 mm/pix to 84 mm/pix based on sUAS sensors, flying altitude, and parameters selected for RGB data processing. The DEMs were studied for their usefulness in visually identifying 14 PCC pavement distresses and nine AC pavement distresses. Analysis showed that DEM with 6 mm/pix resolution or better can be useful for detecting one or more severity levels of 13 PCC pavement distresses and 6 AC pavement distresses. High-resolution DEMs were also useful in identifying distresses related to elevation differences, such as shoving, depression, and faulting. This study illustrates the potential of DEM data in airfield pavement distress detection. © ASCE 2023. All rights reserved.

Flood is one of the natural disasters which has a high intensity in terms of occurrence. Despite the loss value in each event which is not as high as some natural disasters, such as earthquakes or tsunamis, the high occurrence of floods may cause high loss in total. Floods damage property and infrastructure, disrupt economic activity, displace people, harm communities, and degrade ecosystems. This study aims to compare the flood hazard model using Geomorphic Flood Index (GFI) and Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA). GFI is an established method which already used globally to identify the flood-prone area and the depth of the flood. The parameter needed to calculate GFI are the elevation, river network, and historical flood event. Meanwhile, the MCDA method tries to combine environmental, physical, and hydrographic factors, such as land use/land cover, precipitation, and runoff. The study area is Jatinangor District in Sumedang Regency which part of West Java Province, Indonesia. This location is chosen based on historical and potential flood events. Besides, Jatinangor District is the center of industry and commerce which Sumedang Regency is very dependent on. The finding of this study is expected to identify suitable methods for assessing flood hazards in Jatinangor or other areas with similar characteristics, between GFI and MCDA. © 2023 International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. This study was carried out to establish evaluation criteria for applying the Fuzzy Delphi Method to establish disaster prevention teaching aids for autonomous flood prevention. First, possible evaluation criteria for disaster prevention teaching aids were selected through a literature review. The Fuzzy Delphi Method was used in the experts’ questionnaire survey to integrate experts’ opinions with dual triangular fuzzy numbers. The evaluation criteria for disaster prevention teaching aids for autonomous flood prevention were eventually established. The evaluation items contained “learning interest”, “disaster prevention literacy”, “environmental awareness, attitude and disaster prevention ability”, and “simulated situation experience and teaching application”. 22 criteria in “disaster risk cognition”, “disaster cause and awareness”, “enhancing learners’ interests”, and “experiential teaching” included the design, communication, and practicability of disaster prevention teaching aids for autonomous flood prevention. The criteria are expected to help communities and local governments better evaluate, choose, and develop disaster prevention teaching aids and enhance community residents’ disaster prevention ability.

In this study, we presented the defect identification analysis based on the level-set type topology optimization using hammering testing data. To simulate the oscillation behavior of concrete structure, the equation of motion in three dimensions is introduced as the governing equation. The performance function is defied by the time integral of the squared residual between the computed and observed displacements. The problem is to find the defect topologies so as to minimize the performance function. In the model with a small number of observation points, it was found that nonexistent defects disappeared by using the weighted sensitivity method. In addition, it was confirmed that the model with a large number of observation points did not show the same tendency as the model with a small number of observation points because the accuracy of defect identification increased as the number of observation points increased. © 2023

Rapid urbanization over the years has led to the loss of natural land cover, thereby affecting the Land Surface Temperature (LST) distribution in urban areas. The aim of this study is to analyze LST anomalies (calculated as the deviation from long term mean) over Chennai and check if critical land cover changes can be identified from them. LST from Landsat thermal infrared (TIR) images acquired in the months of April and May from the year 1988 onwards were used to estimate the LST anomalies. Positive LST anomalies were observed over areas that have been converted from a natural vegetated state to impervious surface conditions. There has been an overall shift towards positive anomalies over Chennai city,indicating a clear sign of urbanization. © 2021 IEEE.

The Unscented Transform which is the basis of the Unscented Kalman Filter, UKF, is used here to develop a novel predictive controller for non-linear plants, called the Unscented Transform Controller, UTC. The UTC can be seen as the dual of the UKF, the same way as the LQG regulator and the Kalman Filter are related. The UTC is demonstrated on the control of complex maneuvers in free fall of a virtual skydiver the model of which was verified in wind tunnel and free fall experiments.

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is widely used in electrochemistry, energy sciences, biology, and beyond. Analyzing EIS data is crucial, but it often poses challenges because of the numerous possible equivalent circuit models, the need for accurate analytical models, the difficulties of nonlinear regression, and the necessity of managing large datasets within a unified framework. To overcome these challenges, non-parametric models, such as the distribution of relaxation times (DRT, also known as the distribution function of relaxation times, DFRT), have emerged as promising tools for EIS analysis. For example, the DRT can be used to generate equivalent circuit models, initialize regression parameters, provide a time-domain representation of EIS spectra, and identify electrochemical processes. However, mastering the DRT method poses challenges as it requires mathematical and programming proficiency, which may extend beyond experimentalists’ usual expertise. Post-inversion analysis of DRT data can be difficult, especially in accurately identifying electrochemical processes, leading to results that may not always meet expectations. This article examines non-parametric EIS analysis methods, outlining their strengths and limitations from theoretical, computational, and end-user perspectives, and provides guidelines for their future development. Moreover, insights from survey data emphasize the need to develop a large impedance database, akin to an impedance genome. In turn, software development should target one-click, fully automated DRT analysis for multidimensional EIS spectra interpretation, software validation, and reliability. Particularly, creating a collaborative ecosystem hinged on free software could promote innovation and catalyze the adoption of the DRT method throughout all fields that use impedance data. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.

The most recent widely used web-based platforms for user interaction and communication are social networking sites (SNSs). After 2019 and as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, SNSs are becoming heavily utilized in schools and universities by teachers and professors to allow for assisting, motivating, and supporting pupils by organizing groups on several applications, such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram, etc., or using other tools like Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Zoom, etc. Despite the fact that there are numerous publications about the use of SNSs in education, studies about the competency of utilizing SNSs in the teaching of working civil engineering students are scarce in the relevant literature. Thus, the purpose of this article is to examine the competency of several SNS usage categories, such as online discussion, knowledge creation, information sharing, and chatting, among working civil engineering students who are in desperate need of prompt sources of information due to their work commitments. The usefulness of employing SNSs in education is also evaluated in this study based on the viewpoints of multiple civil engineering instructors as a result of their observations of the students' performance. It is anticipated that the outcomes of this paper will be useful in education for researchers and instructors. The authors found that the key factor for effective utilization of the SNSs in civil engineering education is the engagement between the instructor and students, which will lead to the development of mutual understanding and trust needed for students' success.

Electrocoagulation for nickel, chromium, and iron removal from mine water using aluminum electrodes

High global demand for nickel metal has contributed significantly to the growth of the nickel mining industry in Indonesia. This growth has a positive multiplier effect on the economy, with the potential to affect aquatic life and humans owing to the high levels of chromium, nickel, and iron in mine water. Therefore, this study aims to develop an electrocoagulation (EC) reactor to remove nickel, chromium, and iron from mine water. This study used a continuous reactor and aluminum electrodes with variations in current density (3.378, 6.757, and 10.135 mA/cm²) and inflow (0.3, 0.5, and 1 L/min). The results showed that the operating scenario with a current strength of 6 A and an inflow of 0.3 L/min had a removal efficiency of 86.89 % nickel, 99.51 % chromium, and 80.61 % iron with a charge loading value of 11,194 F/ma³ and Reynolds number of 39. These results are expected to provide valuable information for the development of an effective EC technology, thereby demonstrating its potential for the removal of metals from nickel mine water. © 2024 The Authors
