In this work, we investigate the capability of a waste bentonite from Polycanthos quarry in Cyprus, as low-density solid additive to create colloids which are used in water-based drilling fluid systems (WBF) in drilling operations. Repurposing waste bentonite aligns with environmental sustainability and when properly processed can serve as cost-effective solution to achieve the desired colloidal properties for WBF. US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) annually dredge 300 million cubic yards nationwide to maintain channels’ navigation. Treating this huge amount of dredged material is a major challenge due to the mobilization of potential contaminants causing depreciation in water quality and depletion of valuable land. Rather than treating the dredged material as a waste, investigating alternative ways to recycle and reuse the dredged material is needed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing dredged material as a substitute for sand in flowable fill. A total of five mixtures were prepared by using different proportions of dredged material and virgin fine aggregates (sand) in flowable fill. Each mixture was tested for flowability and compressive strength. Developing Mathematical Model to Predict the Material Behavior Under Contact Mechanics

Contact mechanics explores the behavior of two materials in contact under varying load conditions. Numerous experimental studies have been conducted to comprehend this phenomenon, given its susceptibility to various factors. Incorporating numerical methods becomes imperative to predict such behavior efficiently and cost-effectively. This study specifically delves into finite element analysis (FEA) utilizing the ABAQUS software program to scrutinize parameters influencing the lifespan of materials in contact. The study's data is grounded in experimental work on Titanium Alloys, considering the phase lag between contact load and axial loads. The results from the developed model are compared with both the analytical solution for contact mechanics and the experimental study. Findings reveal a high degree of agreement between the FEA results, the Ruiz program, and other experimental studies. The maximum ratio between tangential load and contact loads occurs under in-phase conditions, while the largest Modified Shear Stress Range (MSSR) is observed in the out-of-phase condition. This result signifies a notable 145% increase in fatigue life for the out-of-phase condition compared to the in-phase condition. Consequently, the developed FEA proves valuable in predicting material life and its crack initiation. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Land use and land cover (LULC) changes strongly affect local hydrology and sediment *** current study focused on a basin in the Brazilian Amazon and had the following three objectives:(1) to perform an effective diagnosis of flow and sediment yield,(2) to evaluate the impacts of LULC changes over the last 40 years on the hydro-sedimentological variables,and (3) to investigate the impacts of the possible trends or breaking points in the flow,surface runoff,and sediment yield *** Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model validation showed that the simulated results were consistent with the data measured in the dynamic reproduction of flow ***,changes in LULC altered surface runoff,sediment yield,and flow according to the Mann-Kendall and Pettitt non-parametric *** was also observed that the sub-basins in which pastureland is predominant are more susceptible to increased surface runoff and sediment *** to trend and homogeneity tests,these sub-basins had break points in the time series of these *** the other hand,in the sub-basins whose land cover is predominantly forest,the time series is homogeneous and *** current study highlighted the impacts that 40 years of LULC changes in an Amazonian basin had on hydro-sedimentological variables,which,in turn,can play an important role in changing the hydrological cycle,consequently these changes can also impact diverse human activities in the region,such as agribusiness,livestock,energy production,food security,and public water ***,it is concluded that the SWAT model is a good estimator of hydro-sedimentological processes in Amazonian basins and can be used by decision makers in the management of water and environmental resources.

An earthquake is a sudden movement of the ground that comes from a wave in a place and spreads in all directions. In 2019 the Government of Indonesia has ratified a new standard on procedures for earthquake resistance planning for building and non-building structures, namely SNI 1726: 2019 as a revision of SNI 1726: 2012. The adoption of SNI 1726-2019 as a new standard has changed the scope of the procedure for calculating earthquakes to become wider so that it can follow the current developments. Earthquake loads on buildings were analyzed using dynamic response spectrum analysis. This study aims to compare the results of the calculation using the response spectrum using SNI 1726-2012 and SNI 1726-2019 in order to determine the safety of building that still use the old rules. The building structure is modeled on a lecture building with a height of 14,10 m in the Province of D.I Yogyakarta. The results of the research prove that the structure of the lecture building which still uses the old method must be rehabilitated so that it is able to withstand earthquake loads based on the new SNI 1726-2019 method. Influence of the Corrosion Degree of Hot-Dipped Galvanized Reinforcements on its Bond Strength to Concrete

This work studies the behavior of hot-dipped galvanized steel against chloride corrosion and its effect on its bond strength to concrete. Two steel diameters were adopted and bond strength was assessed using a standardized pull-out test, followed by measuring different degrees of corrosion. The results show that the initial corrosion of hot-dipped galvanized steel, due to the high alkalinity of fresh concrete, does not affect the structural performance of reinforced concrete and that galvanized steel has superior bond strength to concrete than non-galvanized steel for small corrosion rates. However, it decreases as the corrosion degree significantly increases. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Increasing risk of oppressive heatwaves over India in the future warming

The frequency of heatwave events has been increasing with climate change across the globe, causing devastating impacts on human and natural systems. Particularly, the co-occurrence of high temperature with high humidity has the potential of worse impacts on human health than extreme temperature alone. We use observations to examine the characteristics of extreme (high temperature and low humidity) and oppressive (high temperature and high humidity) heatwaves and their impacts on human mortality. We also use climate model simulations to understand the likelihood of heatwaves under varied warming conditions in future climates. We find an increasing trend in the number of days of extreme and oppressive heatwaves, with surprisingly a higher rate of increase in oppressive heatwaves. We also observe a higher correlation between oppressive heatwaves and historical heat-stress-related human deaths than extreme heatwaves, indicating more substantial impacts of oppressive heatwaves on the human population than extreme heatwaves. Further, our results show a five-fold increase in the number of days of oppressive heatwaves under 1.5°warming in both mid (2035-2065) and end (2070- 2100) of the 21st century, relative to the historical period (1975 to 2005) whereas the number of extreme heatwave days remains relatively constant in mid and end of this century. Remarkably, 2°warming results in an eight-fold and almost two-fold increase in the number of days of oppressive heatwaves by the end of the century relative to the historical period and 1.5°warming conditions. These results suggest that limiting the mean global warming to 1.5°can reduce the likelihood of oppressive and extreme heatwaves by 44% and 25% by the end of the century relative to the 2°warming world. Moreover, the remarkable increase in oppressive heatwave days highlights the elevated risk of heatwaves over densely populated countries and indicates an imminent need for adaptation measures. © 2025, CC BY.

Increased biodegradability, in other words reduced environmental recalcitrance, has the potential to be an important asset in the battle against plastics pollution. It can partially mitigate global plastic leakages into the environment, which is next to their impact on climate change the biggest concern regarding plastics use. Biodegradation should be regarded as an optimal safety net in many applications and should often not be the targeted waste management option for biodegradable plastics. Biodegradability should not preclude reuse or proper recyclability, which are impactful means to reduce the carbon intensity of plastics lifecycles. Despite the added advantages, the market penetration of biodegradable plastics is only very slowly growing. Moreover, policy recommends its use only in limited applications, driven by sometimes-higher cost and limited recyclability. In this article, we posit that arguments against widespread application of biodegradable plastics are largely driven by misperceptions arising from intrinsic limitations of contemporary sustainability assessments and offer an alternative viewpoint that could compensate for this. In general, sustainability assessments fail to properly assess learning curves, often do not take littering potential into account, and are rather conservative with respect to background systems. Hence, recyclability– or better: circularity– judgements often do not resolve the paradoxical situation in which increased market shares lead to easier and more profitable recycling schemes and vice versa. Judging disruptive innovations by incorporating thermodynamics-inspired, less data-intensive, state-based methods, based on, e.g., statistical entropy analysis, into the decision support framework could allow to forecast packaging markets with performant materials that are intrinsically circular, having reduced environmental recalcitrance. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The hilly and mountainous topography with high annual rainfall triggered a flash flood in the upper Lematang sub-watershed. The impact caused not only damaged infrastructure, agriculture land, and even fatalities. This research aimed to conduct flash flood hazard zoning based on morphometric parameters using the GIS technique. By extracting the DEM data, it is generated to a slope map, flow direction, flow accumulation, stream order, and watershed boundary. The data were then evaluated to obtain the morphometric parameters. Parameters analyzed using the PCA approach to get the correlation between parameters related to flash flood hazards. Of the 12 parameters, the KMO value is 0.66, and a significant level is 0.001 1, and the cumulative percentage of the two factors was able to explain data variations of 87.49%. Finally, using 12 parameters, the upper Lematang sub-watershed area had 48.79% very-high hazard zones of a flash flood, 16.48% high zones, 20.28% moderate zones, and 0.97% low zones, and 13.48% very-low zones. The results of this study can be used in mitigation activities as well as for integrated watershed management. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Durable Pet Air Filter Based on a Biomimetic Surface Functionalization Method for Formaldehyde Degradation and Aerosol Filtration

Currently, most air filters, such as polyester (PET) fiber non-woven fabric, only have a single function of particulate filtration. However, the removal of substances harmful to human health, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and bacteria, is becoming increasingly important in indoor air purification. Herein, based on the biomimetic surface functionalization properties of polydopamine (PDA) and the photocatalytic degradation of organic matter and the antibacterial effect of RGO (reduced graphene oxide)-TiO2, a multifunctional PET/PET-PDA-RGO-TiO2(P/PPRT) filter with a sandwich structure was prepared for formaldehyde degradation, aerosol filtration, and bactericidal operation. When the preparation concentrations of DA (dopamine), GO (graphene oxide), and TiO2 solutions are 2 g/L, 0.05 g/L, and 20 g/L, respectively, P/PP2R0.05T20 maintains optimal performance of photocatalytic reaction kinetics and reaches a formaldehyde degradation rate of higher than 79% within 300 min in the 7th cycle of usage. Compared with the base subtracts, P/PP2R0.05T20 has the highest filtration efficiency of 88.57% to 99.18% for 0.3 to 10 µm particles, respectively, and has a filtration efficiency of higher than 74% for 0.3 µm particles in the 7th cycles of usage. The quality factor of P/PP2R0.05T20 is improved significantly due to the sandwich structure. The effect of loaded particulate on the catalyst on photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde was also studied. It was found that the photocatalytic formaldehyde degradation rate of P/PP2R0.05T20 is about 81.8% within 300 min under different A2 particulate load content. In addition, P/PP2R0.05T20 has a bioaerosol removal rate of higher than 99% against Escherichia coli. This study provides a practical approach to preparing a multifunctional air filter with the performance of aerosol filtration, photocatalytic degradation of formaldehyde, and bactericidal function using PET non-woven fabric. © 2024, The Authors.
