Inner City communities have traditionally been overlooked and often forgotten in the satellite and ground-based remote sensing revolution. For too long, undergraduate minority students from these communities have been marginalized, ostracized, and unprepared to participate in the plethora of remote sensing applications that yet remain new, foreign, and mysterious. Even basic understanding of the amazing tool of remote sensing is unknown to them. These students lack the exposure, the awareness, the understanding, and the engagement in the foray of remote sensing and the unique lens it provides to probe and unearth new ways of gaining knowledge about the environment. To adequately prepare inner-city students to become members of the next generation of geoscientists, to empower and sustain underserved neighborhoods, and to assist in replenishing the geoscience workforce, unique paradigms of teaching and learning about remote sensing are *** the Center for Remote Sensing and Earth System Sciences (ReSESS) at the New York City College of technology (City Tech), remote sensing is being used as a catalyst to attract and to engage students from underserved communities in studying urban climate within their local neighborhoods. Results indicate that this approach of using remote sensing to attract students to urban climate increased awareness and understanding in the geosciences, and it motivated students to share their newfound knowledge in environmental sustainability initiatives with their fellow local citizens.

Emerging contaminant microplastics (MPs) are getting worldwide attention for their ubiquitous occurrence and potential risk to the environment. However, the seasonal influence on freshwater MP pollution remains poorly understood. To better understand and evaluate the riverine MPs in different seasons, this study conducted the risk assessment of MPs in an urban river, Houjin River, during the different seasons. The present study found that the MPs (0.1–5 mm, mostly 0.1–2 mm) were more abundant in the dry season (183.33 ± 128.95 items/m3) compared with the wet season (102.08 ± 45.80 items/m3). Similarly, the mixture of different MPs polymers was more diverse in the dry season. The related pollution indices such as the contamination factor (CF) and pollution load index (PLI) showed that average CF and PLI were 5.15 and 2.10 in the dry season, which significantly decreased to 1.58 and 1.25, respectively, in the wet season (p © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Optimum Prediction of the Transfer Length of Strands Based on Artificial Neural Networks

As the effectiveness of prestressing is crucially linked to the transfer length (TL) of the strands, this study used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique for optimal prediction of TL based on more than 458 data points collected from various literature works. The ANN technique allowed for investigating the effect of various key parameters classified into major categories including: strand characteristics, concrete properties, geometric details, and manufacturing method. The MATLAB software was utilized to build, train, and test the ANN using 19 input variables and one targeted output. The proposed ANN showed high prediction capability with a low mean square error. The sensitivity analysis of the TL gave a good indication regarding the significance of the parameters influencing the TL determination. Mathematical expression was developed considering the most significant parameters according to the ANN results and sensitivity analysis.

Control of Vibrations of Common Pedestrian Bridges in Jordan Using Tuned Mass Dampers

Due to their inherent slenderness and lightness, pedestrian bridges are typically subtle to human induced vibrations. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of human induced vibrations on common simply supported steel footbridges in Jordan, especially those with natural frequencies between 2 to 4 Hz. Such fundamental frequency is close to human movement frequency of walking, jumping and running. The ETABS software was utilized to develop a finite element model (FEM) in order to identify the footbridge dynamic properties including frequency, natural period, stiffness and the critical length at which the induced-vibrations become of great effect. The bridge was excited with multiple human walking and running loading scenarios. The response of the footbridge was evaluated and compared with and without integrating tuned mass dampers (TMD) tuned with the fundamental natural frequency of the footbridge in order to optimize appropriate mass, stiffness and damping coefficient. It was observed that after attaching the TMD, the fundamental vibration frequency decreased to stable value less than human excitation frequencies. Also, acceleration, velocity, and displacement responses were decreased significantly to be within acceptable limits. Finally, a recommendation and guidelines are given for considering the induced-vibrations in the design of common footbridges in Jordan.

Identification of T – pier construction work activities on the elevated railway project to develop work breakdown structure

The development of elevated railway infrastructures in Indonesia is going rapidly. The uniqueness of the T-Pier construction in the elevated railway project is the construction method that causes many activities to execute. The explained activities in the construction method were not clear, neither treated in much detail. In line with the problem, this research aim is to identify T-Piers construction work activities specifically. The project sample was MRT Jakarta CP 103 elevated section and T-Pier construction was the object of the case study. The first stage of this research was archive analysis, expert validation, and surveying of 100 bridge engineers. The collected data were analyzed by the descriptive analysis method. Then the work breakdown structure tree diagram was developed and shown the activities development. There were 31 activities identified starting from preparation until finishing and grouped into the main section group of activities i.e. pile cap, pier column, installation, and dismantling of temporary shoring, and pier head group activities. All the experts agreed that the activities identified were valid and almost all respondents 100% agree. The activities identified were at level 5 in the work breakdown structure development. The detailed activities can be standardized as a reference in future similar projects.

Laboratory Evaluation of Heavy Metal Removal from Stormwater Runoff by Pervious Concrete Pavement Containing Seashell and Oil Palm Kernel Shell

One of the major issues related with impermeable surfaces such as impervious concrete pavement in urban area is the collecting of rain as stormwater runoff, which then moves harmful natural and man-made pollutant into the natural water bodies such as lakes, streams, rivers, etc. This study investigated the effect of pervious concrete containing palm oil kernel shell and seashell on removing dissolved heavy metals contaminants from stormwater runoff. Therefore, mixtures were made, which replaced 6.3-9.5 mm limestone with 25 and 50% of 6.3-9.5 mm and 4.75-6.3 mm of both shells. The specimens were cured in a fog room and void content were tested. Specimens with same void content (23%) are selected to reduce experimental variability from differing void content. Pervious concrete cylinders were loaded in the laboratory with collected stormwater runoff, and concentrations, volumes of influent and effluent evaluated. Ten consecutive storm events of 200 mL in 20 min of rain are simulated to test heavy metal removal performance. The range of heavy metal removal for pervious concrete mixture containing seashell was 37 and 93% which was higher than that of control mixture (39-73%). However, the rate of heavy metal removal for specimens incorporating kernel shell was between 14 and 63% which was lower than that of control mixture. The results showed that the waste materials can be considered as one of the sustainable runoff purification methods, respecting their effective heavy metal removal rate in runoff, as well as the reasonably low cost and consumption when used on the pervious concrete pavement. © 2022, The Authors. In recent years, humanity has experienced the effects of using unsustainable energy sources that pollute the environment while being inefficient. Most of the primary energy input used in energy conversion processes is lost in the form of heat. Thermoelectric generators (TEGs) have the potential to recover some of this wasted heat;however, their low energy conversion efficiency needs to be addressed. Previous literature has shown effective optimization of thermoelectric generation systems through statistical tools such as the Taguchi method that optimized all the parameters that affect the outcome of the system. To this date, no research has considered wind speed for convection heat transfer as one of the optimizable parameters. This study aims to optimize the operating conditions of commercially available TEGs that are cooled by forced convection simulating naturally occurring wind speeds and operate under low-quality waste heat temperatures to improve the TEG performance further. Two commercially available TEGs are optimized via the Taguchi method. The Taguchi method is implemented with three parameters and three levels, making an L9 orthogonal array. The objective function is the maximum output power. The optimized parameters are the hot side temperature, the heat sink size, and the wind airspeed. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used alongside the Taguchi orthogonal array for the statistical analysis of the results. The optimization results show that the hot side temperature is the most influential parameter to the output power. In addition, the change in the heat sink size also significantly influences the output power, whereas the impact of the wind speed is not as significant. In addition, interaction analysis between the parameters is performed. The Taguchi method yields satisfactory optimization results. Contamination of aquatic and terrestrial organisms by Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), emerging contaminants, is widespread, as these compounds are present in water, soil, air, and food, owing to their environmental persistence. PFAS exposure induces biochemical process alterations associated with the disruption of the antioxidant defense system in several species. This review aims to discuss how PFAS-induced antioxidant system alterations lead to changes in biochemical processes in different organisms exposed to these pollutants. This disruption, then leads to an imbalance in antioxidant defense systems, contributing to the formation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which, in turn, can be exacerbate oxidative stress, induce cellular damage, enhance lipid peroxidation, destabilize lysosomal membranes, and cause genotoxic effects, ultimately compromising DNA integrity. In acute tests, PFAS have led to mortality, growth inhibition, diminished behavioral and locomotor abilities, and reproductive impairment. PFAS-induced effects differ with varying species or types of substances, and further bioaccumulation through food chains exacerbates environmental contamination, carrying considerable risks. These findings demonstrate the complex and enduring impact of PFAS on environmental health, emphasizing the importance of this review in corroborating studies on sub-lethal toxicity in exposed organisms and how these effects reflect on the environment. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Performance of Various Wind Models for Storm Surge and Wave Prediction in the Bay of Bengal: A Case Study of Cyclone Hudhud

Wind and pressure fields associated with a tropical cyclone are the primary driving atmospheric forcing for storm surge computations. Here, performance of various atmospheric forcing during an Extremely Severe Cyclonic Storm (ESCS) Hudhud of Bay of Bengal (BoB) in computing storm surges and wave characteristics are evaluated with observations. Atmospheric forcing considered are obtained from parametric wind models of Holland, reanalysis data ERA5, and a fully physics-based weather prediction model data from WRF. Study utilizes ADvance CIRCulation (ADCIRC) model in standalone as well as tightly coupled with, Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) (ADCIRC+SWAN) for generating storm surge and wave characteristics, respectively. Peak water levels at landfall are well computed when forced by parametric wind model than ERA5 or WRF. Also, ADCIRC+SWAN, resulted in an additional wave-set up ranging from 0.05 m to 0.35 m with different atmospheric forcing. Furthermore, study revealed that, both standalone ADCIRC and coupled ADCRIC+SWAN model predicted storm surge levels better when forced with 1980 Holland wind model. However, significant wave heights were better simulated by ADCIRC+SWAN with WRF forcing. This study is an attempt to understand capabilities of various atmospheric forcing used in BoB for storm surge and wave prediction. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.
