Interactions between groundwater and surface water sustain groundwater-dependent ecosystems, provide baseflow to rivers, and regulate river temperature and biogeochemical cycles, amongst many other processes. These interactions occur in freshwater environments including rivers, springs, lakes, and wetlands, and in coastal environments via tidal pumping, submarine groundwater discharge, and seawater intrusion. Here, we use a data-driven approach to explore groundwater-surface water interactions research using 20,275 journal papers published between 1970 and 2023. Analyses show that research into groundwater-surface water interactions is highly multi-disciplinary, with growing contributions from the social and biological sciences. As in the case with many research areas, the number of groundwater-surface water interactions papers is rapidly increasing with over 1200 papers published per year since 2020. Drawing on our data-driven approach and expert knowledge, we synthesise current research trends and identify critical future research directions. Despite the thousands of papers on groundwater-surface water interactions, there are still important processes that are difficult to quantify or predict at meaningful spatial scales to inform management. We see benefits in future groundwater-surface water interactions research focusing on: (1) embracing new technologies including the use of internet-of-things-based sensors and further use of uncrewed vehicles in data capture and remote sensing approaches to inform groundwater-surface water interactions at large scales, (2) capitalising on the increased computational power, availability of physically based models, and machine learning to inform hydrological and biogeochemical processes, and (3) continuing the movement towards multi-disciplinary investigations to better inform the quantification of groundwater-surface water interactions that will enable better management outcomes. © 2024, The Authors. Criteria for Submergence of Ice Blocks in Front of Ice Cover

During winter, ice jams develop when floating ice blocks accumulate in rivers. Ice jams can dramatically decrease in the capacity of flow in a river and can cause ice flooding due to increase in water level. Submergence of floating ice blocks in front of ice cover is critical for the development of an ice jam. In this study, the effect of the rotation angle of ice blocks on the submergence of ice block was assessed. The impacts of both the drag force caused by the flow and the hydraulic pressure force on the rotation of ice block were studied. Considering both the maximum moment for anti-overturn of an ice block, and the associated rotation angle θ₁, equations for describing the criteria for ice block entrainment in front of ice cover have been derived. On the basis of the theorem for moment equilibrium, relating the moment acting on a horizontal ice block with the maximum anti-overturn moment of an ice block, the criteria for assessing the overturn-and-submergence of an ice block have been proposed. To verify results using the derived equations for calculating the critical flow velocity for ice block submergence in front of ice cover, data was collected from flume experiments in the laboratory. Experiments have been conducted using different sizes of ice block under different flow conditions in a flume which is 26.68 m long, 0.40 m wide, and 0.6 m deep. Model ice blocks were made of polypropylene and have nearly the same as the mass density of the natural ice. Microencapsulation methods in product development may result in innovative products with improved stability, functionality, and active chemical release (s). Microcapsules may be made out of biopolymers instead of synthetic polymers because of their biodegradability, lower production costs, and greater accessibility. The potential of biopolymers-based microencapsulation technology in sustainable textiles is substantial despite this field only getting started. This short review explores the role of biopolymers such as chitosan, gelatin, alginate, and cellulose in microencapsulation-mediated sustainable textile technology. The long-term effects of using microencapsulation made from biopolymers are also discussed, with an eye toward sustainability. © 2023 The Authors

One enduring objective in the scientific community has been to understand how climate change impacts the distribution of river flows. In this paper, we explore the impact of this phenomenon on the river flow levels of the Arkansas River in the state of Colorado. Changes in monthly flow regimes were projected and aggregated to decadal time scale using two future climate scenarios. To achieve this, a neural network was employed to map the region, and from this, the relationship between streamflow and accumulated snow and temperature was analyzed and used to derive the streamflow projections. Streamflow projections for the April-September period in the Arkansas River were analyzed and the results show that river flow increases following the increase in precipitation and temperature regimes throughout the river basin. The historical peak flow in June shifted to occur in April. Frequency analyses of flow show that the any flow in the months April-July would be exceeded more frequently in the future. The percentage change in exceedance for each month will vary - with a substantial difference for April-July, a minor change for the month of August, and almost no change at all in September. © 2019 IEEE.

Bridge deck condition rating systems commonly use measurements of obvious defects recorded through visual investigation. Accordingly, the condition of bridge decks is rated linguistically with inherent vagueness in the description of the deck condition. Although several advanced non-destructive testing (NDT) technologies have emerged for inspecting bridge decks, their results have yet to be incorporated in the condition rating process. The present study establishes a unique link between NDT technologies and inspector findings by developing a novel bridge deck condition rating index (BDCI). The proposed procedure captures the integrated results of infrared thermography (IRT) and ground penetrating radar (GPR), along with visual inspection judgement deployed to evaluate a full-scale ageing concrete bridge deck. The information sought to identify the parameters affecting the integration process was gathered from bridge engineers with extensive experience and intuition. The analysis process utilized the fuzzy set theory, thus overcoming the inherent scientific uncertainties and imprecision in the measurements of bridge deck subsurface defects by IRT and GPR testing along with surface defects identified through bridge inspector observations. Integrating the proposed BDCI procedure with existing bridge management systems can provide a detailed and reliable appraisal of bridge health, thus helping transportation agencies in optimizing budgets and prioritizing maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation efforts. © 2019 American Concrete Institute. In the United States,more than 94%highways are paved with asphalt materials and placing crack sealant materials has been a common pavement maintenance for *** sealing treatment includes the use of a router to create a reservoir on the intended cracks whereas crack filling is given without doing any modification to the crack *** the initial cost of crack sealing is higher,it is expected to have a longer service period compared to crack *** is little research on comparison of short and long term cost effectiveness between these two treatments using the real field cost data *** this study four test sites in Texas were treated with crack filling and sealing using the same sealant material and finishing *** effectiveness of both treatments was measured in terms of initial,annual average and life cycle cost based on the cost inputs during *** general,the results of this study indicated that(1)on an average approximately 45%initial cost increase was estimated with the two routing configurations of crack sealing;(2)material and labor cost is found to have the most significant effect on the higher initial cost of crack sealing compared to other associated costs;(3)annual average and life cycle costs have shown that crack sealing is more cost effective pavement maintenance compared to crack filling over a long period of time;(4)agency cost is observed to be reduced by approximately 24%with crack sealing treatment based on the35 year analysis period.

In phase I, series of tests were carried out to determine to what extent feasible to make out of recycled construction waste, green and sustainable concrete blocks. The research concluded that the recycled fine aggregate (sand) affects the strength of the blocks drastically. At the end of phase I a recommendation was made to sieve and clean the recycled aggregate thoroughly to get rid of the high contents of the sand in the samples to be tested. The central objective of phase II trials is the testing of blocks made of recycled materials free of dust and sand contents. In order to test the extent of improvement in the strength and durability of the blocks, several mixes were designed. In this paper, 10 mixes of concrete and 100 specimens were prepared. In the mixes the fresh coarse and fine aggregate are replaced by 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of the recycled aggregate. The rest of the materials (OPC and recycled water) remain the same. All the mixes of the recycled coarse aggregate and recycled water achieved a good enhancement on the strength and durability of the blocks. Recycled sand still was found to be a limiting factor in this industry. The results presented show that the blocks made of recycled coarse aggregate and recycled water are reliable and of good strength and durability.

Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Construction industry has been in quest to meet this growth. High performance concrete has been of a great interest to the construction industry. In this research different design mixes were tried to produce concrete of ultra-high performance (UHPC). Targeting to develop concrete of ultra-high performance (UHPC), six mixes (scenarios) were designed. One normal mix was designed as a baseline. The six scenarios were made by changing the mix ingredients (materials), additives, and curing time. Twenty one specimens (cubes, 3 cubes of each mix) were prepared and tested. In order to monitor the development of the compressive strength, the specimens were tested after 7, 14 and 28 days of curing. Curing was done in hot (35+/-2 °C) and normal (20+/-2 °C) water. Then, the characteristics of each scenario were compared to the baseline characteristics. Almost all the scenarios showed increase in the compressive strength. Changes in the ingredients, the temperature of the curing, and curing time resulted in increase in the strength of different magnitudes. Regarding the materials and additives, the increase in strength is of average magnitude of 43 MPa. Regarding the curing time, the increase in strength is of average magnitude of 17 MPa. Regarding the temperature of the water used for curing, the increase in strength is of average magnitude of 6 MPa.
