The spatially differentiated environmental impacts and associated costs of technological improvement and circular agricultural practices in sugarcane production were assessed. Analysis of the cause-effect relationship between the key processes and substances each helped develop alternative scenarios for impact reduction. PM 2.5 emissions contributed to 92 % of the total human health impacts from open burning of field residues. Freshwater ecotoxicity, mainly due to ametryn emissions from pesticide application, contributed to 47 % of the total damage to the ecosystem. The environmental costs were 116 % higher than the value of sugarcane production, signifying the critical importance of adopting alternative pathways that provide economic benefits from environmental cost reduction compared to the production value. Scenarios considering green cane harvesting and waste management approaches demonstrated high potential for total impact reduction of 99 % and 97 %, respectively, and economic gains of 202 and 225 billion THB, respectively (5.76 and 6.42 billion USD, respectively). The economic benefits of waste utilization were 137 % higher than the value of sugarcane production, demonstrating the potential benefits of product substitution to help mitigate impacts. The core findings highlight the significance of the PM 2.5 impact-related external costs and underscore the benefits of adopting green cane harvesting in conjunction with on-field waste utilization to mitigate the impact of open burning and produce value-added products. Technological improvement and circular agricultural practices coupled with valuation of spatially differentiated impacts can provide useful and more accurate information to policymakers, to prioritize the implementation of mitigation strategies for enhancing the environmental sustainability of sugarcane production.

Recognizing wildfires as a multiscale planetary emergency, this paper describes a systems analysis of technology countermeasures, with special attention to Sicily, California, and several other regions. The paper describes a framework for systems integration of firefighting, satellites, fixed imaging, and aerial vehicles, with mathematical simulation and machine learning, to support both policy mitigations and responses to incidents. The approach includes (1) the characterization of the planetary emergency of wildfires, (2) early identification of dangerous wildfires and means for their control, and (3) reduction of risks to population centers in both rural and urban areas. Societal metrics of success include human health and safety, environment and ecology, critical food and industrial supply chains, geopolitical security, and others. Several technology and policy countermeasures of particular interest are regional fuel management, distributed sensors, computational intelligence, advanced firefighting materials, protocols, and automatic and semiautonomous responses, benefiting from the latest advancements in information technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and others. © 2024 This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

The United States is continuing on the trajectory to be a racially and ethnically diverse society where non-Hispanic Whites are projected to become the largest group for the next four decades. Whilst the majority becomes the minority and vice versa, the same trend is not reflected in the Science, technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degree attainment or the STEM workforce. A recent report by the National Academies of Sciences, engineering, and Medicine describes how minority-serving institutions are not widely targeted and highly utilized in the production of future STEM workers. The NSF reported that 22% of all science and engineering bachelor's degrees were awarded to underrepresented minorities. The distribution of bachelor's degrees consisted of Hispanics or Latinos receiving 13.5% of science and 10% of engineering degrees;Black or African Americans, 9% and 4%;and American Indians or Alaska Natives, 0.5% and 0.3%, respectively. From years 2004 to 2014, there has been a 11.6% decline of underrepresented minorities earning science and engineering bachelor's degree at high Hispanic enrollment institutions and a 26.5% decline at historically black colleges or universities. The NSF also reported that in 2015, African-American and Hispanic scientists and engineers working in science and engineering occupations were only five and six percent, respectively. Although studies have found modest gains in geoscience bachelor's degree recipients among women, the number of underrepresented minorities recipients is at 12% or less. Additionally, other studies reported that according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2017 underrepresented minorities comprised only a tenth of the geoscience workforce in the United States, and women comprised approximately a third of environmental scientists and geoscientists and a fifth of the four-year geoscience faculty. Significant economic growth has been witnessed in Dubai during last twenty years primarily due to its business-friendly environments in the region. The management of construction and demolition (C D) wastes in Dubai is aimed at encouraging the environmental sustainability of all projects. The volume of C D wastes accounted for 6,638,471 tons in the year 2011. A laboratory investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using recycled C D waste materials for pipeline bedding application. Samples were collected from a dump site near Umm Nahid, Dubai. Samples were processed to collect a mix of concrete waste and aggregates. Sieve analysis, Dry Density, and CBR tests were conducted to determine the suitability of this material for use as subgrade for the pipeline bedding. Concrete specimens 150 mm x 150 mm x 150 mm were prepared and tested for the compressive strength at the age of 7 days. Results of laboratory tests have demonstrated that recycled aggregates from construction demolitions and waste materials can be effectively used for pipeline bedding material thereby saving valuable resources and contributing to the sustainability. © 2019 IEEE.

The continuous traffic congestion on Dubai - Al Ain Road (E66) and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) at the cloverleaf interchange, located near Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO)-Dubai, United Arab Emirate, was studied. The solution developed to ease the congestion on this interchange by adopting additional ramps to facilitate free flow traffic movement and thus improving the Level of Service (LOS) based on the operational conditions of the facility. Based on the study, the benefits of improving the traffic congestion include: (1) easing the flow of vehicles, (2) increasing road users' satisfaction, (3) reducing air pollution as well as fuel consumption, and (4) increasing the safety of road users. Overall, the ability to keep continuous flow of traffic will result in large savings of time and vehicle operation costs, and contribute to the convenience and comfort of road users. © 2019 IEEE.

In the context of achieving Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in hospitals, among others, it is carried out with control and supervision, including in the case of hospital facility maintenance installations. Besides that, the hospital needs to improve its services. The asset reporting system is one of the high needs in this field, so it requires a solution that can deal with existing problems. Unfortunately, the current reporting system so far is more likely to be conventional, such as by telephone. This study proposes a new solution to the hospital facility maintenance reporting process, namely by utilising smartphone-based applications that directly connected to the server. So, the information distributed to the competent parties. This solution can speed up the reporting process and actions. Also, save the historical equipment that is available from each service room - the results of this study used as a hospital facility maintenance reporting system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based advanced oxidation processes have become promising water treatment technologies in recent years due to the generation ability of powerful oxidative radicals. The redox cycle between transitional metals in heterogeneous catalysis is essential for the continuous activation of PMS, which determines the removal efficiency of organic pollutants. In this work, we first prepared Fe3O4 using precipitation method under alkaline anoxic conditions and subsequently added Ni2+ aqueous solution to synthesize Ni-Fe (hydr)oxide catalysts. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxide catalysts show efficient PMS activation ability, causing the degradation of organic pollutants including trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, bisphenol A, phenol, and tribromophenol. In Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides/PMS system, nonradical pathway is dominant at the initial stage of the reaction which generates SO5•− and indirectly produces 1O2. In this system, 1O2 and dissolved O2 together participate in the O2 cycling, •OH generation, and electron transfer involving the reduction of Ni(III). The formed Ni(II) reacted with PMS to generate strong oxidative •OH and SO4•− through radical pathway for pollutant degradation. The optimum Ni/Fe ratio of Ni-Fe (hydr)oxide catalysts under the studied conditions was 0.50. Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides show high reactivity and stability in real water matrices, demonstrating Ni-Fe (hydr)oxides are promising catalysts for PMS activation to degrade organic pollutants in contaminated water. © 2022, The Authors. Water is a valuable and scarce resource in the Middle East. Major share of the potable water supplied to towns and cities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is produced from the desalination process. Desalination process is a very costly process in terms of its cost per liter of water. Besides, desalination process has adverse effects on the marine environments. Regular car-washing in the UAE is necessitated by extreme weather conditions, especially during summer months. In Dubai, water used for car-washing comes from desalination facilities (Dubai Municipality). This paper describes a two stage filter ((1) sand and gravel mix, and (2) activated carbon) that can be used to treat wastewater generated by car-washing facilities. Laboratory investigation was conducted to test the quality of the waste and treated water. Samples were collected from sump tanks and outflow pipes of car-washing facilities. The water samples were tested in the laboratory for the following parameters: (1) TSS, (2) BOD, and (3) COD. The laboratory results have shown significant removal efficiency of all the pollutants targeted and the characteristics of the treated wastewater were found to meeting the standards set by Dubai authorities (Trakhees) for landscaping applications. Future research is directed to improve the output of the filter to make it suitable for commercial applications. © 2019 IEEE.

Study region: The Choushui River Fan, Taiwan. Study focus: Groundwater overdraft has led to not only groundwater depletion but also environmental disasters, such as subsidence and seawater intrusion in the Choushui River Alluvial Fan, Taiwan. The influence of land subsidence is gradually shifting from the coast to the center of the fan and threatening Taiwan high-speed rail. However, it remains a great challenge to manage and model the groundwater aquifer due to numerous unregulated wells. This study maps and locates private wells using deep learning technologies. We trained and validated convolutional-based deep learning neural networks (DNNs), using street view images. We applied the DNNs to a land subsidence area along the Taiwan high-speed rail, termed the Golden Corridor in Taiwan. The results showed that DNNs can recognize pumping wells with at least 90% accuracy. The testing cases showed their capability to recall all the pumping wells in three road segments along the Golden Corridor. Finally, we spatially estimated potential pumping of a subsidence area using the fine-trained DNNs. New hydrological insights for the region: Given the prevalence of unknown private pumping in the Choushui River Fan, our image data-driven computer vision approach not only eases labor-intensive private well investigations but also advances hydrologic understanding for groundwater modeling. We enhance comprehension of unknown sinks and provide their spatial distribution to improve groundwater modeling. © 2023 The Authors

This study examines the application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in precast beam-column joints to improve structural performance. The studied joints included both adequately and inadequately reinforced conditions (strong and weak joints), constructed using UHPC and deformed rebars. The strong joints allowed the rebars to reach their yield strength under the design bending moment, effectively transferring loads and maintaining structural integrity during service conditions. These well-detailed joints exhibited ductile failure behavior, which is a desired characteristic in reinforced concrete design. In contrast, the weak joints experienced premature and brittle failures, underscoring the importance of proper detailing and reinforcement length. Finally, a practical design scheme was developed to determine the appropriate rebar lengths in UHPC connections to ensure structural integrity and safety. Overall, the integration of UHPC into precast concrete joints significantly enhanced bond performance, improved load transfer mechanisms, and contributed to more resilient and reliable construction practices. © 2025 The Authors
