Simulation of lighting system in the accommodation deck of a 750GT ro-ro ferry

In order to improve the convenience when using a ro-ro ferry, the lighting system used in the ship needs to be designed as conveniently as possible, especially in the accommodation deck. Therefore, the present study simulated and analyzed the lighting system in the accommodation spaces of a 750GT ro-ro ferry. The accommodation space was divided into 3 spaces which are front, middle, and rear spaces. A lighting analysis software named AGI32 was used to compute the lighting performance of each space. The number of lights installed in each space was determined using the room estimator function which is one of the features of the software. From the computation, it was found that the illuminance obtained from the simulation had a lower average than the one defined in the initial design. Moreover, it was also found that the middle accommodation space had the highest illuminance as compared to the other accommodation spaces.

Earth Science Digital Twins are rapidly evolving to advance earth science understanding and societally relevant decision making. Coastal hazards pose complex and compound threats to dynamic human settlements and land use, inviting their analysis using digital twin technologies. A geospatial approach requires a framework for data assimilation that spans Earth observations, in situ sensor networks, environmental models, and characterization of human population and infrastructure assets. In our study, an Open Data Cube is developed as the core integration platform for a series of prototype case studies: 1) coastal mosquito-borne disease exposure assessment; 2) dasymetric mapping of vulnerable populations; and 3) integrated modeling and observational assessment of a King Tide flood event for Hampton Roads, Virginia (USA.) These prototypes are described with preliminary results. The paper also discusses benefits of the ODC as a Digital Twin as well as impediments and future developments for enhanced capabilities.

This study aimed to quantify the carbon footprint of elementary school lunch menus across six major urban school districts in the United States, and to simulate the effect of sustainable food policies on carbon emission reductions, while ensuring nutritional requirements remain adequate. We analyzed a total of twenty distinct meals per district selected from a four-week period and calculated their carbon emissions using life-cycle assessment data. We then modeled three scenarios to reduce carbon emissions: a) Reduction of beef meal offerings to one day per month, b) Introduction of one entirely plant-based day per week, and c) A combination of scenarios 1 and 2. Our findings revealed that beef-containing meals had the highest carbon emissions, while plant-based meals had the lowest. Implementing the one beef day per month policy led to an average savings of 34% in emissions, while the highest plant-based day policy led to a 32% reduction in emissions. Combining both policies resulted in an average reduction of 43% in emissions. Importantly, our nutritional analysis demonstrated that implementing these sustainable food policies resulted in meals with statistically similar macronutrient and micronutrient profiles and contributed increased dietary fiber intake. These results highlight the potential environmental and health benefits of adopting sustainable nutrition policies in elementary schools. By implementing policies that reduce meat consumption and promote plant-based diets, schools can address food insecurity, adverse health impacts, and contribute to overall sustainability goals. © 2023, The Authors. Flamingos use their L-shaped beak and morphing feet to induce vortical traps for prey capture

Flamingos feature one of the most sophisticated filter-feeding systems among birds, characterized by upside-down feeding, comb-like lamellae, and a piston-like tongue. However, the hydrodynamic functions of their L-shaped chattering beak, S-curved neck, and distinct behaviors such as stomping and feeding against the flow remain a mystery. Combining live flamingo experiments with live brine shrimp and passive particles, bioinspired physical models, and 3D CFD simulations, we show that flamingos generate self-induced vortical traps using their heads, beaks, and feet to capture agile planktonic prey in harsh fluid environments. When retracting their heads rapidly (~40 cm/s), flamingos generate tornado-like vortices that stir up and upwell bottom sediments and live shrimp aided by their L-shaped beak. Remarkably, they also induce directional flows (~7 cm/s) through asymmetric beak chattering underwater (~12 Hz). Their morphing feet create horizontal eddies during stomping, lifting, and concentrating sediments and brine shrimp, while trapping fast-swimming invertebrates, as confirmed by using a 3D-printed morphing foot model. During interfacial skimming, flamingos produce a vortical recirculation zone at the beak's tip, aiding in prey capture. Experiments using a flamingo-inspired particle collection system indicate that beak chattering improves capture rates by ~7×. These findings offer design principles for bioinspired particle collection systems that may be applied to remove pollutants and harmful microorganisms from water bodies.

Ocean wave damping is one of the essential activity required for coastal erosion protection, open sea construction, marine aquaculture development and for reducing wave loads on marine structures. Many different structures are used around the world such as offshore rubble mound breakwater, floating breakwaters, caisson type of offshore vertical walls etc. In the present study, an attempt is made on three different types of wave dampers for different purposes of applications. One is on new type of floating breakwater; another one is wave dampers with series of perforated vertical wall with impervious wall at the rear end; he last one is perforated slotted vertical barriers. Studies on hydrodynamic performances such as wave transmissions, wave forces etc. were carried out and the innovation fetched three different US patents. This paper discusses in brief the scientific details of these new wave dampers. The knowledge is expected to be used by any coastal countries depends on their needs and economic possibilities.

Considering the significant thermal influence green spaces have on built environments, this paper aims to present the results of a data-driven analysis to identify statistically significant spatiotemporal trends of green heat losses and surface temperature increases in the urban area of a small municipality. The Brazilian municipality of Feliz was selected for the case study. Landsat-5, Landsat-7, and Landsat-8 images were used to identify Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) cold spots and Land Surface Temperature (LST) hot spots. A data mining tool was employed to identify emerging physical patterns, making it possible to highlight areas where increases in temperature might be associated with specific characteristics of built environments. The urban area presents a particular dynamic, where specific persistent LST hot spots can be associated with historical or diminishing NDVI cold spots. Additionally, LST hot spots, which contribute towards the formation of new urban heat islands were found to correspond to 10% of the detectable emerging patterns in the urban areas. It is expected that the present spatial analysis, by highlighting priority areas for intervention, could provide information to decision-makers and urban planners that would assist in the reorientation of urban occupation, thus contributing to more sustainable and efficient urban planning. © 2022, The Authors. This paper describes the theoretical background, design, and fabrication efforts towards a sub-millimeter-scale polar-specific conductivity cell for use at the ice-ocean interfaces. Five different geometries for the conductivity cell for have been conceptualized and modeled. All five designs show potential to fulfill the design requirements. Fabrication efforts on the preferred design have been undertaken using traditional silicon-based processes. Challenges in the fabrication processes are addressed, with potential solutions discussed.

The real-time warning for flash floods represents one of the major challenges for monitoring centers and civil defenses due to the short time frame in which such phenomena occur. That situation often takes place particularly in mountainous regions where high slope rate favors an increase in the velocity of the water flow and it might generate conditions to impact the water level due to potential for provoking erosion, landslides, and debris flow. An initial one new and unique prototype of hydrometeorological relationship for real-time, site-tunable, water level for flash flood prediction is presented. Time variations of the reflectivity measured by horizontal polarization radar are evaluated and correlated to generate the local estimate of the elevation of the Quitandinha River water level for the next hour. The proposal of this relationship is not intended to act as a simplified hydraulic model but to characterize if a critical elevation of the water level could be obtained from the radar reflectivity data and consequently whether the flash flooding event should be expected. We verified that the proposed relationship that tended to underestimate the water level peaks, however, qualitatively was initially able to indicate if a flood event could occur or not in the next hour. The expectation related to this initial relationship is to improve the obtained results in order to be used as a tool for decision-making in relation to the issuance of warnings delivered by environmental monitoring centers. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG part of Springer Nature.
