Can a robot be a personal dating coach? Even with the increasing amount of conversational data on the internet, the implementation of conversational robots remains a challenge. In particular, a detailed and professional counseling log is expensive and not publicly accessible. In this paper, we develop a robot dating coaching system leveraging corpus from online communities. We examine people’s perceptions of the dating coaching robot with a dialogue module. 97 participants joined to have a conversation with the robot, and 30 of them evaluated the robot. The results indicate that participants thought the robot could become a dating coach while considering the robot is entertaining rather than helpful. © 2020, CC-BY.

Impact of seismic design on cost of structural materials for two storey hostel building in Sabah

Previously, damaging earthquakes were fortunately rare in Malaysia. However, after Sumatera-Andaman earthquake on 26 December 2004 affected Peninsular Malaysia causing deaths, injuries and loss of property. Furthermore, some of the local earthquake that had occurred in Malaysia are probably due to the reactivations of ancient inactive fault due to increasing seismic activities in and around Malaysia. On 5th June 2015, Malaysia experienced a devastating earthquake with magnitude Mw 6.0 in Ranau results in 18 fatalities and affected 61 buildings. Mostly, the fatalities and injuries persistent during an earthquake is caused by structural failures which not include the seismic action into design. Reinforced concrete hostel building in school area will act as a temporary shelter for refuge during the disaster and until it dwindles. Although Malaysia is located on a stable plate and far from the Pacific Ring of Fire, it is essential to consider seismic practice, especially when dealing with cost. Therefore, this paper presents the influence of seismic consideration on cost of material and the factors which influencing the cost by implementing the soil factor, S as proposed by National Annex to Eurocode 8. A typical two storey reinforced concrete hostel building has been generated as basic model. A total of four soil type namely soil type B, C, D and E and five seismicity level has been taken into account where the value of reference peak ground acceleration, agR = 0.04g, 0.06g, 0.07g, 0.12g & 0.16g. Overall, this research work had been conducted based on 3 phases. Based on result, the cost of structural works for the whole building increases around 1% to 12% depend on soil type and level of seismicity.

Current status of sustainability of Belawan Port toward SDG program

Belawan Port is one of the main ports in Indonesia whose role and function are important in the national logistics system. Belawan Port is a gateway for the Province of North Sumatra. The port must have sustainability in carrying out its role and function as transportation and economic infrastructure. In this research, Belawan Port sustainability will be evaluated from several aspects or dimensions, namely ecology, economy, social culture, technology, and institutions and law. Belawan port sustainability analysis using the Multidimensional Scaling method, using the modified Rapfish program. The analysis is carried out on five dimensions and 49 attributes/factors, which are used as a reference in the SDGs program. Not every SDG will be relevant for every business, however, every SDG should be considered. SDGs no.4 and no.5 are not directly related to port management activities, while SDGs no.8,9,11,14,17 are directly related. From the analysis obtained Ecology sustainability index = 48.38 (less-sustainable), Economic sustainability index = 42.89 (Less-Sustainable), Socio-Cultural sustainability index = 52.47 (Fair-Sustainable), Technological sustainability index = 54.11 (Fair-Sustainable), Institutional and Legal sustainability index = 50.74 (Fair-Sustainable). With policy and program interventions, the sustainability of the existing Belawan Port in the short term can be improved to be fair-sustainable for all dimensions (ecology, economy, social & culture, technology, Institution & Law) evaluated.

Hydrophilic organic pollutants (HLOPs) in effluents of wastewater treatment plants are more prevalent than hydrophobic counterparts, therefore development of upstream processes that can effectively enhance the removal of HLOPs can substantially enhance overall treatment performance. To bridge this gap, 3D electrodes made of biochar-supported Al-ZnO nanoparticles ( [email protected] ) applied in heterogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) system, abbreviated as NBE−EF system, is rationally designed for enhanced elimination of HLOPs in wastewater. Our analysis indicates the NBE−EF system results in an efficient THM elimination, 42.4 times greater than that of conventional EF system. MoS 2 as an efficient cocatalyst plays an important role in the conversion from Fe(III) to Fe(II). Singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) are identified as the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the NBE−EF system. [email protected] electrodes could concentrate HLOPs on their surface and degrade it effectively, achieving also a self-cleaning effect. Effective elimination of four HLOPs, i.e., thiamethoxam (THM), dinotefuran (DIN), nitenpyram (NIT), and acetamiprid (ACE), demonstrated the high degradation performance of the NBE−EF system, even at neutral and alkaline conditions. This study provides a new approach for enhanced elimination of HLOPs in wastewater treatment and mechanical insights into degradation pathways and toxicity attenuation.

Analysis of discharge and area of the debris flow based on geological structural and rainfall levels in the slopes of Mount Abang, Kintamani

Geological structural and rainfall intensity causes the parameters of soil shear strength to decline, especially in the surface layer of soil in volcanic rocks that have not experienced weathering. Study of geological structures and rainfall intensity against the hazard of a landslide was destroyed on the slopes of Mount Abang in the Abang Batudinding Village. Soil investigations using the Geoelectric method and sampling at 6 boreholes. Geological analysis on interpretation of slope outcrops, average rainfall analysis of the Thiessen Polygon method and analysis of design flood discharge using the NHSU method. Analysis results show the morphology of the slopes of Mount Abang with a slope of more than 40% and lithology of weathered volcanic rocks consisting of volcanic breccias, and tuffs breccias in conditions rather mild to moderate weathering, if have average effective rainfall for 10-50 years at 238 mm/day. The results also show that the peak discharge of debris flow was 98.639 m3/sec with the volume of debris flow 50072.85 m3 and the width of the range was 49.5 m. This debris flow volume indicated that residents around the river with a range of 49.5 m are at risk of debris flow sediment with a thickness of 1-1.5 m.

This study explores the use of non-homogeneous hidden Markov models (NHMMs) to forecast streamflows into the Orós Reservoir, located in the State of Ceará, Northeastern Brazil. These models employ hydro-climatic information from a given year to predict the next year inflow. The Orós Reservoir is a key infrastructure in the water resources system of the state, where most rivers present very high temporal variability, which is a challenge for water managers. Streamflow forecast systems at the climate scale (months ahead) can be very useful for the challenging process of water allocation in the region. This paper explores the use of NHMMs to provide a probabilistic one-year ahead forecast of the mean annual flow for the Orós Reservoir. Results based on a forecast verification study based on 60 years of independent data show that NHMMs with two or three hidden states, employing the NINO3 climate index as exogenous variable, provides forecasts with an average value of the continuous ranked probability skill score of about 0.2-0.25, meaning that they are better than climatology. It is also evident that those models performed much better during dry years than during wet years, which may be related to lack of other climate indices. © 2018 American Society of civil Engineers.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) risk is highly heritable, with potential additional non-genetic factors, such as prenatal exposure to ambient particulate matter with aerodynamic diameterObjectives: This study examined interactions between MIA and prenatal PM2.5 or major PM2.5 components on ASD ***: In a population-based pregnancy cohort of children born between 2001-2014 in Southern California, 318,751 mother-child pairs were followed through electronic medical records (EMR);4,559 children were diagnosed with ASD before age 5. Four broad categories of MIA were classified, including infection, hypertension, maternal asthma, and autoimmune conditions. Average exposures to PM2.5 and four PM2.5 components, black carbon (BC), organic matter (OM), nitrate (NO3−), and sulfate (SO42−), were estimated at maternal residential addresses during pregnancy. We estimated the ASD risk associated with MIA, air pollution, and their interactions, using Cox regression models to adjust for ***: ASD risk was associated with MIA [infection (hazard ratio 1.11;95% confidence interval 1.05-1.18), hypertension (1.30;1.19-1.42), maternal asthma (1.22;1.08-1.38), autoimmune disease (1.19;1.09-1.30)], and with higher pregnancy PM2.5 [1.07;1.03-1.12 per interquartile (3.73 μg/m3) increase] and all four PM2.5 components. However, there were no interactions of each MIA category with PM2.5 or its components on either multiplicative or additive ***: MIA and pregnancy PM2.5 had independent associations with ASD risk. Our findings do not support the hypothesis that ASD risk in children is associated with synergistic effects of MIA during pregnancy and ambient prenatal air pollution. © 2023, The Authors. Geostatistics application for sand mapping development in hilly area of Sabah, Malaysia

The town area in Kundasang, Sabah, was facing soil mass movement, due to the low cohesion values and high angle of internal friction values. These significant soil properties are showing that the soil in this area might have a high percentage of the granular soils, mainly sand. This paper is showing the determination of sand percentage in this area by using Geostatistics, specifically on semivariogram and Ordinary Kriging, according to each layer with two meters depth intervals. Semivariogram models such as circular, spherical, exponential, and gaussian will be applied, and the lowest value of performance indicator, which is Root-Mean-Square-Error (RMSE) would be selected as the most accurate model, with the mapping of the sand percentage as an outcome.

Characterization of halogenated DBPs and identification of new DBPs trihalomethanols in chlorine dioxide treated drinking water with multiple extractions

Chlorine dioxide(ClO2) is a widely used alternative disinfectant due to its high biocidal efficiency and low-level formation of trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. A major portion of total organic halogen(TOX), a collective parameter for all halogenated DBPs, formed in ClO2-treated drinking water is still unknown. A commonly used pretreatment method for analyzing halogenated DBPs in drinking water is one-time liquid–liquid extraction(LLE), which may lead to a substantial loss of DBPs prior to analysis. In this study, characterization and identification of polar halogenated DBPs in a ClO2-treated drinking water sample were conducted by pretreating the sample with multiple extractions. Compared to one-time LLE, the combined four-time LLEs improved the recovery of TOX by 2.3 times. The developmental toxicity of the drinking water sample pretreated with the combined four-time LLEs was 1.67 times higher than that pretreated with one-time *** the aid of ultra-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, a new group of polar halogenated DBPs, trihalomethanols,were detected in the drinking water sample pretreated with multiple extractions; two of them,trichloromethanol and bromodichloromethanol, were identified with synthesized standard compounds. Moreover, these trihalomethanols were found to be the transformation products of trihalomethanes formed during ClO2disinfection. The results indicate that multiple LLEs can significantly improve extraction efficiencies of polar halogenated DBPs and is a better pretreatment method for characterizing and identifying new polar halogenated DBPs in drinking water.

Modelling surface runoff in a large-scale paddy field in Malaysia

A few models to simulate surface runoff generation at the agricultural field scale are available. However, most of the available models are developed for particular setup with certain assumptions, which preclude their universal use. There are no guidelines to choose a model best suited for a particular agricultural field. The major objective of this study is to estimate the surface runoff in the Muda irrigation scheme, by applying seven well-known hydrological models. The surface runoff amounts estimated using these models are compared with the observed runoff collected at an agricultural block in the scheme. The model performances are evaluated based on the mean runoff to precipitation ratio, relative mean absolute error, and the coefficient of determination criteria. The results suggest that the Smith-Parlange nonlinear model has matched satisfactorily with the observed surface runoff. The performances of the Philip, ARNO and Morel-Seytoux models are found to be close to the Smith-Parlange model. Thus, the mean runoff estimated by Smith-Parlange, Philip, ARNO, and Morel-Seytoux models can be regarded as the surface runoff in the study area. Copyright © 2018 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
