This article studies the efficiency of street networks of Neighborhood Planning Units. Pedestrian Route Directness quantified the NPUs’ efficiency. The sample includes ten Abu Dhabi NPUs built during two periods: pre-1990 and post-1990. Two scenarios are assessed. First, as-built streets are evaluated based on the PRD test. Second, PRD values of NPUs with different plot densities are compared. Results show that plot density does not affect efficiency. A good network design produces high efficiency regardless of its plot density. The effects of streets on efficiency were further revealed by Betweenness. Combining PRD and Betweenness yields important principles of network design. This method can be applied to assess the connectivity of streets in different contexts. Future research should focus on: How do alleys contribute to the efficiency of NPUs? How do street configurations influence the behavior of movement? And how should NPUs be evaluated as local street systems with global implications?. © 2021 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The coal-fired power plant fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA) are gradually used as alternative materials in the concrete. However, knowledge of the leaching characteristics of using both incinerator ashes in concrete production is lacking. This work aimed to evaluate the leaching behavior of the FA and BA used in concrete production by employing batch and tank leaching tests. The outcomes of both leaching tests showed that there was no considerable leaching of any trace elements to the environment, and it remains much lower than standard limitations for utilization as construction materials. The results of cumulative mass discharge showed that the slope of flux time for all elements was less than 0.4 and because of that, primary surface wash-off was the main discharge process of all the heavy metals. Strength test results revealed that there was not much difference between coal ash concrete (CAC) and the control mix at the initial age of curing time. Despite that, at a long period of curing time (180 days), the compressive strength of CAC containing 20% FA as cement replacement and 100% BA as fine aggregate replacement increased by 76% due to the pozzolanic reaction of BA and FA in comparison to the normal concrete, while, due to the high porosity of BA, the workability of CAC decreased by 50%. The outcomes of the current work revealed that the combined use of FA and BA can be counted as a promising alternative in the production of sustainable concrete for structural applications toward sustainable development. Improving energy content and hydrophobic nature of woody biomass can be pursued through torrefaction. This gives torrefied biomass with a low bulk density, potentially increasing storage and transport costs. To overcome this issue, densifying the torrefied biomass is necessary. However, poor binding of particles makes densification challenging without using a binder. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the physicochemical characteristics and techno-economic aspects of torrefied rubberwood biomass (TRWB) when pelletized using various cassava-based binders at different blending ratios. The selected binders included cassava starch (CS), cassava pulp (CP), and cassava chip (CC). Each binder at 5%, 10%, or 15% (wt.) was mixed with TRWB and water before pelletizing using a flat die machine. The results revealed that pelletizing TRWB with different cassava-based binders at various blending ratios influenced the physicochemical characteristics of the TRWB pellets, particularly dimensions, bulk density, fuel and atomic ratios, and energy content. The TRWB pellets demonstrated energy densities in the range of 7.95–11.39 GJ/m3, and their mechanical durability and fine content fell within acceptable ranges. The TRWB pellets maintained their shape during 120 min of water soaking, with water absorption levels varying by binder dose. The pelletizing ability, material, and energy costs of TRWB pellets depend on binder type and dose. CP can be applied as a binder for pelletizing torrefied rubberwood biomass. Floods occur every year and threaten communities worldwide. Indonesia is among the countries faced with this problem and still struggling to seek practical solutions to date. Further, as the country’s centers of trade, business, and technology, the island of Java cannot even perform better in dealing with floods. To further understand possible damage and losses, this research investigated structural mitigation measures as part of flood management in the Pepe River, notably river channelization to increase hydraulic efficiency. For the analysis, it used HEC-RAS to observe the river capacity. Existing conditions revealed that the river could not accommodate the predicted floods based on the return periods derived from the synthetic unit hydrograph of Nakayasu. However, after running the mitigation scenario wherein hydraulic modification was applied, flood risk could be reduced by lowering the river water level. Based on the results, it can be concluded that Indonesia needs to pay more attention to other aspects: ecology, green infrastructure, and water governance, to achieve more effective flood mitigation measures because structural mitigation only provides a temporary solution. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

With the projected global population reaching 9.7 billion by 2050, the production and consumption of food continue to escalate. Nitrogen is pivotal in this landscape due to its significance in living organisms and the environmental repercussions associated with nutrient-rich waste. Inappropriate disposal of such residues contributes to nitrogen release into the environment, impacting aquatic ecosystems and precipitating the generation of greenhouse gases. This study tackles the global challenge of effectively managing nitrogen in food waste by utilizing Material Flow Analysis (MFA) as a tool to comprehend this cycle. The analysis uncovered that vegetables, legumes, and fruits constitute the primary sources of waste generation, while meats, despite their lower mass, account for a substantial proportion of total nitrogen depletion. In the surveyed month of October 2023, 174,834 meals were served, resulting in an average food consumption N-footprint of 0.003 kg of nitrogen discarded per individual meal within the restaurant’s organic waste. These findings indicate that 65% of nitrogen is consumed in meal form, while 35% is discarded as organic solid waste. However, 53% of the nitrogen in the residues originates from food preparation processes, with food preparation responsible for over half of this figure. A deeper process analysis reveals that vegetables have low nitrogen concentrations, although they significantly contribute to waste at all stages. In contrast, meats and eggs, with higher nitrogen concentrations, emerge as noteworthy contributors to the overall nitrogen content in waste. Vegetables and meats contribute about 50% and 45% of the total nitrogen, respectively. These outcomes substantially enhance our comprehension of waste generation dynamics and nutrient utilization at the university restaurant, assisting with waste management, design of sustainable menus, reduction of food waste, and optimized resource utilization, contributing to sustainability and re

Particles produced by the hydro-mechanical processes during sanding in hydrocarbon wells is a highly complex physical process. Sanding onset is influenced by a number of factors which include mechanical failure and hydrodynamic erosion. Over the years a number of mathematical and numerical models have been developed to describe the sand production process, involving sanding criteria or constitutive laws of mechanical or hydro-dynamical nature. In this work we propose a new simplified model working along the lines of the hydro-dynamical constitutive law of previous research works. The model amounts to a set of two ordinary differential equations coupling the mechanical process of plastic yielding with hydro-dynamic erosion, including degradation of the material. The model is constructed for hollow cylinder tests which allows cylindrical symmetry which is particularly useful for determining the sand production coefficient λ from such tests. The sand production coefficient as a function of the externally applied stress is estimated from previously published experimental data via a single parameter best fit. It is shown that the sand production coefficient is nearly constant for the range of values of the external stress considered. Additionally, the mathematical sand production curves capture fairly well the experimental data. © 2022 ARMA, American Rock Mechanics Association.

This paper investigates options to produce low carbon and renewable aviation fuel through existing commercial first generation biorefineries, which could be strategic given the rapid growth of the electric vehicle market for personal mobility. We evaluate the environmental impact of retrofitting a first generation biorefinery to produce aviation fuel through chemical process simulation. The analysis investigates the potential for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and displacing fossil fuel (petroleum-based jet kerosene) in the aviation fuel industry through using corn feedstocks in dry grind biorefineries to convert sugars to 1,4-dimethylcyclooctane (DMCO), which qualifies as renewable jet-A fuel blend and is infrastructure compatible. The average life cycle GHG emissions for a baseline case and a scenario with carbon capture and storage (CCS) of fermentative CO2 are 36 and 5 g CO2 e/MJ DMCO, respectively. Investment in CCS at the biorefinery and adoption of crop best management practices on farms are essential for mitigating the risks of induced land use change GHG emissions for existing corn biorefineries. DMCO as a low-carbon aviation fuel could be a strategic fuel product for retrofitting existing corn dry grind facilities. For aviation fuel supply, corn dry grind facilities could displace about 12 % of jet fuel demand in the near term, which would meet sustainable aviation fuel policy targets. We conclude that corn-to-DMCO shows promise for near-term low-carbon fuel markets in the aviation industry and as a bridge to developing biomass-based jet fuel in the future. © 2022 Elsevier Ltd

Soil's engineering properties are critical components in designing sub and super structures. Knowing the engineering properties helps engineers determine the appropriate type of foundation for a building. Determining engineering properties needs laborious work in the field and in the lab. Alternatively, artificial intelligence (AI) is used in this study to estimate the soil's engineering properties. This project involves design and development of an artificial intelligence-based tool (Neural Network) to simulate soil's engineering properties (output) from physical properties (input). Namely, the artificial neural network (ANN) is developed to estimate the soil's axial compressive strength (output) form the soil's moisture content (input). The ANN is trained, validated, and tested using real data measured in the field. The performance of the ANN is measured by two statistics the correlation coefficient (R) and the root-mean-square error (RMS). As measured by the R statistic, there is a clear linear correlation between the measured and simulated axial compressive strength (R > 0.86). Clearly, the RMSE performance of the ANN is good (small values) and the ANN appears to have a good ability to map a relationship between the input (soil's physical property) and the output (engineering property).

The foundation erection work is a job that has a high enough complexity. In making the decision of the type of pile and the method of erection, practitioners have many choices with various conditions in the field. Decision making will result in an impact during the foundation erection process. This study aims to analyze what are the impacts caused by the choice of pole type and piling method. A preliminary survey was conducted together with four experts to verify and reduce the 11 impact indicators obtained from the literature study, obtained 6 impact indicators which are quite relevant according to experts and will be used in the questionnaire survey. The questionnaire survey was conducted on 45 practitioner respondents who had carried out foundation building work. Data analysis validity and reliability tests were carried out on the questionnaire data. It was concluded that there were three main impacts that occurred due to the choice of the type of foundation pile and the piling method, namely environmental impact, economic impact, and social impact. The main impacts are broken down into six impacts including the use of fuel, ground vibration, fuel and material costs, equipment and labor costs, workplace safety, and noise. © Published under licence by IOPPublishing Ltd.
