A breakthrough in the multimedia field is needed by creating varied learning strategies to attract students' interest in learning. The purpose of this study is to create learning media M-Learning to support the learning process in Vocational High School and to know the level of prevalence M-Learning as a medium of learning. The research method using Research and Development which has eight stages: 1) Identification of Research Needs, 2) Purpose Formulation, 3) Formulation of material items, 4) Formulation of success tools, 5) Media manuscript formulation, 6) Tests or product trials, 7) Revisions, 8) Manuscripts are ready to be produced. This media is developed using Android Studio. The result of this research is a dynamic Android-based application that is run online as a supporter of learning. The results of validator assessment and student response can be obtained from the media expert value at 65% in the sense of valid, acquiring a low score due to a lot of revision of the application. According to the material experts, the media obtains the value of 85% which means valid, and a validity score of 94.7% is obtained from students' responses that mean valid. The conclusion shows that validator assessments of learning media can be used as supporting self-study, especially for multidiscipline students.

Simulation-based analysis of the use of PCM-wallboards to reduce cooling energy demand and peak-loads in low-rise residential heavyweight buildings in Kuwait

Between 2000 and 2015, annual electric peak demand in Kuwait has doubled to 15000 MW and the Ministry of Energy and Water expects this number to double once more by 2030 attributing 70% of this growth to new housing projects. Within this context, this manuscript evaluates the effect of incorporating PCM-walboards in low-rise air-conditioned residential heavyweight buildings in Kuwait. Using an EnergyPlus single-zone model, a parametric study is performed considering several window-to-wal ratios (WWRs), different solar orientations and some PCM-walboards configurations. The main study goals are to: (i) explore the validity of a single PCM-wallboard solution that can be universally applied throughout residential buildings in Kuwait; (i) evaluate the impact of PCM- wallboard on the reduction of both cooling demand and peak-loads; (ii) provide some guidelines for incorporating PCM-walboards in Kuwait. Folowing an extensive parametric study, a 4 cm thick PCM-walboard with a melting-peak temperature of 24 ℃ yielded the lowest annual cooling demand across a variety of room orientations and WWRs assuming cooling setpoint of 24 ℃. Its implementation led to annual cooling energy savings of 4%-5% across all the case-studies. Regarding the impact throughout the year, cooling demand and peak-loads can be reduced by 5%-7% during summer months. The average daily cooling loads can be reduced by 5%-8%.

Nowadays, nanotechnology and filtration using membranes have proven to be effective in wastewater treatment. Nanoparticles are highly reactive and effective redox and anti-microbial materials, while membrane filtration techniques reduce wastewater contaminants throughout the filtration process in an economical and fast manner. This study merges membrane technology and nanotechnology together through preparation of entrapped nano Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) into cellulose acetate (CA) membranes. The prepared nZVI was characterized by XRD and UV spectrophotometer, while the prepared membrane was characterized by measuring the water content, chemical compatibility, oil resistance, and membrane strength. The prepared membrane was tested for domestic wastewater treatment at different operating parameters pH, entrapped nZVI dose, and different flow rates. The efficiency of treatment was evaluated according to the reduction in turbidity, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia, nitrate, total solids (TS), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and iron concentrations. The associated reductions were recorded as 92, 70, 69, 80, 73, 37, 33, 36, 28, 77 and 64%, respectively for pH between 7 and 8 using nZVI dosage of 0.2 g/100 mL CA and a flow rate of 100 mL/min. This technique is more economical and efficient than the conventional technique. © 2017 AIChE. All rights reserved.

On 3 October 2023, a multihazard cascade in the Sikkim Himalaya, India, was triggered by 14.7 million cubic meters of frozen lateral moraine collapsing into South Lhonak Lake. The impact generated an ~20-meter tsunami-like impact wave, which breached the moraine and drained ~50 million cubic meters of the lake's water. The ensuing glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) eroded ~270 million cubic meters of sediment, which overwhelmed infrastructure, including hydropower installations along the Teesta River. The physical scale and human and economic impacts of this event prompt urgent reflection on the role of climate change and human activities in exacerbating such disasters. Insights into multihazard evolution are pivotal for informing policy development, enhancing early warning systems (EWS), and spurring paradigm shifts in GLOF risk management strategies in the Himalaya and other mountain environments.

Mechanical Properties of Single Shear Plane of Bolted Steel Connection

A 5-storey portable steel tower based on prefabricated frame concept has been built in Jamilus Research Centre, UTHM. It is now undergoing laboratory testing for static and dynamic performance. In this study, the mechanical properties of the connections were investigated via their connection condition between elements (beam and column) and connectors. The frame elements were designed based on S275 steel grade of 77 mm x 77 mm hollow section with 3 mm thickness, and 8 mm thickness of connectors' plate. The connection was subjected to single shear plane action which fastened by bolts. Mild steel (grade 4.6) and high tension (grade 8.8) bolts with 10 mm diameter size were used. Shear, bearing and tensile strengths of the bolts and steel plates were determined via tension testing using 50 tonnes of Universal Testing Machine (UTM). From the results, all bolts and steel plates have satisfied the design strengths requirement of 640 N/mm2 (high tension bolt), 240 N/mm2 (mild steel bolt) and 275 N/mm2 as required by EN 1993-1-8. Meanwhile the ultimate shear force of bolts was found within ranges of 25% (high tension) and 12.5% (mild steel) from their respective ultimate tensile force. Bearing failure was occurred at bolt hole of 3 mm thickness of steel plate but only when it was fastened to high tension bolt. No bearing failure occurred when mild steel bolt was used. It has proven that all bolt spacing and edges distances were sufficient, without tearing failure observed in all testing. Finally, the permissible bearing resistance were checked based on the ratio of experiment against the EN 1993-1-8 relationships, when it has shown to satisfaction if the value is less than 1 as recommended by previous researcher.

In this study, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based modelling has been done to estimate daily Sea Surface Temperature (SST) using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Aqua datasets. A feed-forward Back-Propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN-BP) model is implemented in this work. This ANN based SST model (MODIS-SSTANN) was trained and tested over the Arabian Sea using 5 years of MODIS data and in-situ reference data collected by CERSAT from Coriolis data centre. The application of the tested model requires only the brightness temperatures of MODIS Aqua spectral of bands 31 and 32 at 11 and 12 µm as inputs. The modelled results were compared and analysed with the standard MODIS SST (MODIS-SSTSTD) product as well as the reference data. Preliminary analysis of the obtained results show that the proposed ANN based technique performs better than MODIS SST product. The obtained results suggests that the machine learning techniques such as ANN has good potential and should be further explored in detail for estimation of SST at both near shore and offshore waters. © 2017 ACRS. A series of titania nanoparticles and nanotubes deposited with various quantities of bismuth（Bi） were prepared via sol-gel and hydrothermal methods, respectively. They were then characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy（XRD）, X-ray photo electron spectroscopy（XPS）, UV–Vis diffused reflectance spectra（DRS）, photoluminescence spectra（PLS）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, energy dispersive analysis of X-rays（EDAX）, and BET surface analysis. These catalysts were employed for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from a mixture of pure water and glycerol under solar light irradiation. The presence of the Bispecies was found to play a vital role in enhancing activity while minimizing electron hole recombination（relative to bare TiO）. The nanotubes exhibited better activity than the nanoparticles of Bi-deposited TiO, showing the significance of the morphology; however, photocatalytic activity is predominantly dependent on the deposition of bismuth. The activity increased by approximately an order of magnitude at the optimum concentration of Bi deposited over TiO（2 wt%）. The presence of the Bispecies played a vital role in minimizing electron hole recombination, resulting in higher activity compared to bare TiO.

We present some improvements on interpolation based control (IC) for linear discrete-time systems with polyhedral constraints on the control and the states variables. The plant may be uncertain, time-varying, and subject to bounded disturbances. Roughly speaking, IC approach is based on the interpolation between an inner and an outer controller. The extension presented here is twofold. On the one hand, the IC approach is extended to deal with higher order inner controllers, making it e.g. possible to incorporate integral action in a vicinity of the origin. On the other hand, this paper presents a modification that better exploits the control signal range. As with previous IC strategies, the presented method demands relatively low online computational resources, and is applicable also to uncertain plants. The benefits of the improved scheme are illustrated in some examples. © 2017

The Effect of Students’ Car Access and Car use Habits on Student Behavior to Reduce using Cars for Traveling to Campus

This study reports an investigation of psychological factors influencing student behavior to reduce using cars for traveling to campus from the perspective of the Norm Activation Model, with the addition of students’ car access, and car use habits for traveling to campus. Students from three different university campuses completed a survey on their car commuting behavior. Results indicated that a car use habit, awareness of consequences, and ascription of responsibility explain 63% variance of personal norm. Personal norms explain 47% variance of the behavioral intention. In turn, behavioral intention, car use habit, and car access explains 54% of the variance of actual car use. A car use habit and ascription of responsibility were the strongest factors that influence personal norms, and car use habit was the strongest factors that influence actual car use behavior, while car access significantly influence car use habit and actual car use behavior. Implications of these findings are that in order to alter the use of car, universities should implement both structural and psychological intervention. To be effective interventions should be design to removing opportunities for enactment of car use habit, also to enhance the sense of responsibility towards the negative impact of car use.

For one year, underrepresented minority students majoring in Science, technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) were engaged in a rigorous geoscience program that trained and equipped them with basic geoscience knowledge and geoscience workforce skills that adequately prepared them for entry level geoscience career building positions. Preliminary results from this young program with its small sample size (with a sample size of 10, caution should be exercised in generalizing these results) are extremely encouraging;They show that the program's geoscience remote sensing research internship produced significant student gains in a variety of remote sensing skills that range from interpreting, manipulating, and analyzing remote sensing data to conducting and presenting remote sensing research. Some of these students have also now joined the geoscience workforce as interns.
